@@chrisrdgymnastics Yes, I guess it must be hard for such an elite gymnast who is already a world and Olympic champion to remain motivated when the only meets he can go to are Nationals or the Russian cup. Considering the process to go to the next Olympics, if the ban is not lifted by April for the Euros, it will be impossible for Russia to go to Paris (you need to qualify at Euros 23 to go to Worlds 23 and then be in the top 12 teams to go to Paris). There may be the last possibility to get individual spots later but I suppose Russia has more ambition than that. Nikita is close to Putin and is involved in he Russian youth army. Losing a complete Olympic cycle for reasons beyond his control must be awful. I have mixed feelings about this ban because even if I support Ukraine, there have been countless conflicts for decades and no country has experienced such a boycott since maybe South Africa during the Apartheid. What makes a war “legal” or “acceptable”? It’s always a subjective question depending on the side you’re on. The war that the US launched against Irak in 2003 was very questionable and not “approved” by the UN. But the US was never banned (that would be quite hard to do anyway). Ideally sports and politics shouldn’t mix but it’s technically impossible. No country is perfect and we could find many reasons to ban any country for some reason. At the same time, the Ivan Kukiak debacle during the medal ceremony in Baku with the “Z” on his leo didn’t really improve the situation. Sorry it’s a bit long, I got carried away 😅
