- The Central Asian gray monitor lizard is the largest lizard of Kazakhstan (Central Asia). The length of adult specimens from the tip of the muzzle to the tip of the tail reaches 150 cm.The gray monitor lizard is usually closely connected with the colonies of the large gerbil (Rhombomys opimus): in its complex burrows it finds refuge, and the animals themselves often form the basis of the diet of this predatory reptile. In addition to rodents, large insects, chicks and nests, lizards, snakes and young turtles become prey for the monitor. From shelters in search of food, the monitor lizard can go a distance of more than 1 kilometer. Fleeing from danger, he can run for a short time at a speed of up to 120 m per min., But quickly gets tired and stops. In search of bird's nests, monitor lizards, especially young ones, cleverly climb trees and shrubs. The animal is listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Filmed in the deserts of Kyzylkum, South Kazakhstan region.
