    I have the same problem with upholstery. One of my students built a lovely rocking chair and I had some special Brogue fabric given to me by an old Upholsterer many years before. The fabric was kept for just the right project and this chair fitted the bill. As I was working with a number of students, this young fellow was sent, with the chair base, fabric and foam across the road to another skilled Upholsterer to see if he could finish the seat cushion for us. The student had been away for some time and the Upholsterer did more than just finish the job. He took time off from his work to instruct the student as he worked on his own cushion, personally overseeing his work. He returned, proud as punch with a quality result that did this treasured piece of fabric justice.

      @@lottatroublemaker6130 Thanks for the correction, both terms ring a bell and it was a fabric. A rich gold and green with a raised pattern effect. I only have two Budgies, Timmy & Joey, one is blue, the other green. I often get them confused too. :)

    Comfy. Wow, that chair turned out AMAZING. Because you're redoing the cushions, I suggest going with a firmer foam. I have that foam on my daily foot rest and it has already started being permanently compressed after... Maybe a year? You could just make them removable and have replaceable cushions

    • @jasmeralia
      @jasmeralia 2 года назад +7

      I defonitely agree about planning the cushions to be replaceable. There's no way even the best foam is going to last as long as the woodworking will.

    • @christopherbedford9897
      @christopherbedford9897 2 года назад +3

      Yah the upholstery trade refers to that foam as "high density" when it's actually anything but. It's scarcely dense enough to cut a bath sponge from. What you need is what they call "composite", the stuff that's thousands of little offcuts of stiffer foam all sort of melted together (I guess there must be a reason they don't make sheets of the stiffer stuff? 🤷‍♂)

    • @UTube354
      @UTube354 2 года назад +3

      I ‘fixed’ one dining chair and replaced the seat cushion. It came out ‘meh’, good enough. My buddy was getting custom cushions for his boat, sent the paper template for the dimensions and picked the foam thickness. They were beautiful and reasonably priced. I sent off a template for the other 9 chairs and they were perfect. After more than a decade a few of the cushions needed rehab. I visited the local fabric store, the owner was very impressed with the previous work, 3 different types of trimmed foam, a batting for the elements and waterproof stitching. I was directed to materials and given tips for even a nicer, indoor repair. These held up even longer, closer to 20 years. Even used daily, when the set was passed on, the newer cushions could almost pass for new.
      The fabric store is long gone replaced by condos, nothing local popped up to fill this niche. Local machine shops, hardwood dealers, chandleries, tanneries, and craftsman are fading away being replaced by lower end, disposable, online orders. Please support these local resources, pick their brains and pass on these skills and knowledge before everything is replaced by cheap, mass produced, plastic, disposable, knockoffs of once beautiful bespoke pieces. Do it for the kids.

    • @lottatroublemaker6130
      @lottatroublemaker6130 Год назад +2

      Also it is nice to give the foam a layer of wadding on top (spray glue it down). It gives the cushion a much more finished, high quality, look! 🤗

    almost a year after this was posted... i'm always amazed at a) what you "see" in your design mind, and b) the meticulous attention to detail. Many (MANY) years ago, I built a coffee table for the TV room so my and my (then) wife could eat while we watched TV. It was two 3'-4x12's with some 2x8's nailed across them on top with dark stain. weighed about 200 pounds. took ten minutes to build. You need framing, concrete, plumbing, electrical, roofing? I'm your guy. Fine furniture like this? call Johnny!

    This may be a bit late but ... for the cushions you should consider different layers of foam, ie: a laminate of differing densities. Starting with a thickish and firm base layer - to keep the structure, then a less firm layer in the middle for comfort and then a soft thinner layer on top - one of those foams with a profile like the inside of an egg box - for breathability and comfort.

    just about the time I think I'm good at something, I meet someone who is. It originally applied to my attempts at martial arts but I found it apples to a whole lot of things, including woodworking. Nice job.

    Just thought I'd add a little extra to my earlier comment! I literally found you making your kid a bench and a chair. Okay, maybe not true. The first video I found was your gold inlay table!!! Now I have to go back and binge watch your other builds. Totally unhappy I didn't find you earlier, but hey, I'm in, I'll watch em all... well, I'm pretty sure I will... just do you, and keep up the humor, much appreciated!

    Comfy! I agree with you on the cushions... need some work, but over all both projects turned out great.

    Comfy!! Nice chair! I wish I had such a well stocked shop. Covering seat cushions is easy if you know how it's done. Some quality time on RUclips will show you all you need to know. My wife figured it out in an afternoon, and did 7 dinning room chairs in a day. Including removal, cleaning the nasty seats under the cushions, cutting and shaping new cushioning for the seat. Ours do not have backs. I would have put casters on the legs, and from experience I have found five legs on a chair is much more stable.

    thing about upholsttry is tp get a finished seam on anything it needs to be either reversed or stitched and in your timeframe that definitely wasn't doable custom seam work without the proper tools for something that size if you want it to look good would've been at least another 3 days just sewing maybe more if its not something you're familiar with

      overall though love the finished product the woodwork makes up for the rushed cushions. just a heads up though be prepared for the cusions to eventually give out staples and cloth dont work well together

    Next time you make cushions, give yourself a bit of allowance amd make some cuts on the corners so you can fold the material over instead of trying to wrap it without cutting. That should get rid of the pleats. :) Awesome job BTW

    Chefs knives especially the serrated bread knife (assuming they are sharp) are good for cutting thick foam.

    Most underrated, yet very new song is from a band called "Nomy" they did a mashup from 5 80's songs in there own style about a month ago. Without peaking look if you can find out the titels. (Unfortunatly the bands are already in the title of the video)
    Comfy!

    i recently built a desk for a friend from a Hickory slab, that curled like a potato chip. After getting it back flat I hand cut bow ties and then filled the bow ties with epoxy, turned out killer.Wondering what your thought are as far as the strength of that compared to wood? would be great to send you a couple pics. Thanks
