비주류 문화라 치부되던 태동기부터 대중문화의 한자리를 크게 차지한 현재까지, 한국 힙합은 쉬지 않고 급변하며 지금의 모습을 가지게 되었다. 또래의 목소리를 대변하고 그들의 공감을 불러일으키는 음악으로 2004년 한국 힙합에 첫 ‘발자국’을 남긴 팔로알토(Paloalto)는 자신과 같은 20대와 소통할 언어로 힙합을 선택하였다. 힙합을 통해 동시대 젊은이들의 감성을 자극하고 위로와 응원, 긍정적인 메시지를 전파해온 뮤지션 팔로알토는 이제 소속 아티스트가 10명이 넘는 영향력 있는 레이블의 대표로 사람들의 입에 오르내리고 있다. 뮤지션과 레이블 대표의 불투명한 경계, 급변하는 한국 힙합 신, 그의 주위를 둘러싼 시간과 환경의 변화. 이 모든 것들은 당연히도 그가 발표하는 결과물들을 통해 조금씩 드러났다. 누군가에게는 신선함으로, 또 다른 이에게는 이질감으로 다가올 수밖에 없었던 다양한 변화들을 밑거름 삼아 완성한 새로운 팔로알토 표 음악이 바로 오랜 휴지기 끝에 내어놓은 싱글 ‘Fancy’다.
장르, 활동 무대의 경계를 두지 않는 실력파 작곡가이자 보컬 딘(DEAN)을 필두로 하이라이트레코즈(Hi-Lite Records)의 떠오르는 신예 스웨이디(Sway D), 프로듀서 제이신(J.Sin)과 같은 강한 개성을 가진 아티스트들을 한 곡에 모아 놓은 과감함은 대중들이 흔히 떠올리는 팔로알토의 이미지에서 크게 벗어나 있다. 하지만 이러한 시도는 그간 발표한 ‘Chief Life’, ‘Behind the Scenes’, ‘Dark Panda’ 등을 통해 팔로알토 본인에게는 매우 익숙한 것이었다. 단순히 새로운 아티스트들과의 만남으로만 끝난 것이 아닌, 그들이 가진 역할을 정확히 해석하고 적재적소에 채워 넣은 팔로알토의 노련함이 돋보이는 곡이다. 몽환적인 신시사이저 사운드와 딘의 보컬이 깔린 도입부를 지나 자연스럽게 늦은 시각의 라운지 클럽 혹은 은밀한 바의 전경이 그려지는 서사가 이어진다. 또렷하게 시각화되던 가사는 딘의 강렬한 후렴을 지나 스웨이디의 파트로 진행되면서 흐릿하고 추상적인 느낌으로 변화한다. 꿈틀대는 베이스라인과 함께 다양한 색깔이 혼합되어 변화무쌍함을 드러내는 곡 ‘Fancy’는 그 어떤 팔로알토의 음악에서도 존재하지 않았던 새로움이다. 팔로알토의 반전이라 느껴졌던 지난 몇몇 음악들은 단지 서문에 불과했다 생각될 만큼 뛰어난 완성도를 자랑하는 이번 싱글 ‘Fancy’는 더는 낯섦이 아닌 새롭게 변화한 팔로알토의 첫 번째 장으로 기억될 것이다.

The bridge of this song is a work of art with the piano in the backround and dean's backing vocals behind his main vocals taking the main spot of the song and the original drums being lo-fi'ed so we can barely hear them. That part really makes the song.
