Popular hike in the HOWGILLS, awesome Cautley Spout & The Calf

The Howgill Fells are situated between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Often viewed from the motorway by visitors to the Lake District but rarely visited. However, contained within this relatively small area, are some of the best fells of Northern England and the biggest cascading waterfall in England.

We start the hike in the capital of the Howgills, the book town of Sedbergh. From here we travel in a northern direction following the River Rawthey, on the outer lower edges of the fells. On the way we pass the unusual architecture of Thursgill Farm and fight through some of the thorny bushes that attempt to block our progress.
Eventually, we meet the Cautley Holme Beck which contributes the water collected on the fells and having endured the passage down the waterfall of Cautley Spout. This waterfall is the biggest cascading waterfall in England and we follow westerly the very steep climb along the edges of the waterfall.
When we gain the top, we follow the beck on to the hillside and find the trickle of water that signifies the source of the water that eventually turns in to a torrent off the side of the mountain. The path is now relatively flat and takes in the general direction to the top of the highest fell in the Howgills ' The Calf'. The weather by this point has gathered a chill factor of -8C. Having tapped the trig point we now head back in a southernly direction to the town we stated at, Sedberg.
Overall the hike is just less than ten miles but has significant gain in hight with over 2,500 feet collected on the combined ascents. As you will see from the video, the rewards our outstanding beauty and tranquility.
