    Another way to record anything off of free streaming apps or any streaming app would be to locate a VCR and some VHS tapes or locate a VCR DVD combo recorder. You could probably also do the job with a DVD recorder and some DVD-R/DVD+R or RW discs. Thank You Antenna Man for your informative videos.

    There's also the old trick of plugging the Roku into a computer with a video input card and recording the output using the computer. And if the computer is running PVR software you can use it to record shows at a specific time. That box really is just acting as a computer with video input.

    • @markfuller
      @markfuller 2 года назад +1

      @writerpatric, how do you record the output? Is that like ffmpeg screen recording? I've done that, and I wonder how it compares to hdmi recording. (I do ffmpeg h264rgb lossless. An hour show results in an 80gig size. Then I have to transcode that to h264 lossy/compressed for optimal quality and file size. (5% of the lossless size). The reason I do it this way is because compressing on the fly can affect the smoothness of the video. I find just capturing in real time works better; compress as a seperate step with veryslow preset for max compression, taking longer time.).
      Anyway, I'm curious if you've compared screen capture to hdmi capture. Is one better than they other? There must be some ideal way to do this (best quality). I'm wondering if screen capture is it, or a separate hardware device.

    I use the Channels plus application from fancy bits. And it definitely took a while to figure out what link the channels plus application wanted me to input, I had to ask for customer service help several times, but now it is finished and all of the Pluto channels are pulled into my Channels plus grid guide. It seems to only pull down five hours of guy data, not sure why, but it definitely is nice to have it all in one application. Especially because the channels plus application works very well with VoiceOver, the screen reader and IT devices for blind people.

    Question about VPN. So, we have Fire stick and antenna (had Tablo and would not stay connected with antenna and no help from tech support, it was 4-5 months old). The reason we got antenna is because we have the wireless Internet (only option). It resets itself all the time and never is our main location where we are. It says we are like four to six hours away in different states. Would VPN allow us to set a stable location, like our actual address even when our Internet connection says we are some where else. Thanks, I'm not real tech savvy.

    I purchased a Cloaner Alliance to record some personal video's I had on VHF tape. I found it was NOT a standalone unit but had to operate with Windows. Perhaps it's the model I purchased, but I was very disappointed. I tried to record to a memory stick and occasionally the video would record, but mostly it would not. I tried a standard USB drive and it wouldn't work. I never found it to be a dependable solution for me. When it did work, it would not create a standard MP4 file that I could simply transfer or play with another player. You didn't mention that you actually tested this product yourself, which I found a bit odd.
    Also, most OTA recorders won't record analog either. In years back, I would simply route my video into a Hauppauge card and record with WinTV, but all of these solutions use a Windows machine, which I don't use anymore, and never going back to Windows. New OTA recorders just pick up and record digital. I'm still looking for a true standalone HDMI recorder that produces MP4's.

      @@kevinj8258 - Consumer recordings for private use has nothing to do with the license between the content owner and the distributor. If a contact between the two were able to block consumers from recording shows then the VCR would've never been able to have been sold (and the recording device that was reviewed in this video wouldn't be able to be sold either). As long as I (as a consumer) don't resale or redistribute content, then I'm free to record any media (TV, radio, streaming video) for future personal use that I would normally have a right to access.

    PlutoTV for android would let me take screen shots and record the video, now it's using DRM video and my understand is I'd have to root the device and i'm not willing to do that since it's samsung and has a ROM bios fuse.

    Always enjoy your video. You can also record directly from your firestick, cube of android box, by adding a flash drive. I have a 256 mb flash on my fire cube. and I'm able to set recording far in advance. And I am able to record with Recast and Tablo over the air antenna.

      Let me ask, when you record directly using your fire TV cube, does it produce a MP4 that can be transfered and played with another player, OR, do you have to use your Fire TV cube to play it?

      @@RickPaquin (I have 256 MB) When you format it for external usage. This way you will be able to use it on other devices. Not sure what mp4 is so I can't address that question. You can also do this with a fire stick or android box. I love it, I can set recording for in advance, Love it.
