    The one thing that I have doubts about is the mechanical strength. The adapter doesn't mate with the through-hole part of the micro-USB footprint, so it would put all the stress on the solder joints.

      If I'm not mistake there's some kind o "L" shaped pins that you can buy. Maybe those could be used in this project to make the soldering easier

    • @olegpetrov1308
      @olegpetrov1308 4 months ago

      It will. I've seen janky installed Type-C which although broke, still looked sturdier than this. (Since they had leads, instead of solder pads)
      Looks extremely unreliable, but at least it is an option.

  • @ardatubes
    @ardatubes 6 months ago +40

    Thanks for the tip! I needed such connectors, and all adapters so far were quite jank. Also, you should apply flux before using solder. Not only you'll get good connections on the first try, but also your joints will be sturdier.

    Do these boards have the resisters to make them actually USB C compliant? Like some cheap devices I have only charge with USB A to C because the c to c doesn't send 5v to non compliant devices

      @TheGinGearthere is now way that with the low amount of heat it comes undone...

    • @orclev
      @orclev 3 months ago +1

      @VKsChannel Kapton tape isn't damaged by heat, but it doesn't really provide any protection from it either. Putting a little tape over the plastic parts isn't going to do anything to protect them from heat. The reason you use it is to keep parts in place after the solder holding them there melts. You should have taped down the chips near the connector, particularly those super tiny SMD components because if anything was going to be dislodged by that heat gun it was those. Likewise the reason you use flux is because it cleans the oxides and gunk off of the pads which then allows the solder to form a good bond. You need to be putting the flux on BEFORE you solder, not after you already put the solder on there. That's like painting your house and then washing it instead of the other way around. The fact that the solder looked so dull and grey instead of bright and shiny means that you got a bunch of oxides and junk in your solder because you didn't clean the pads with flux first. Remember the golden rule of soldering, you can never have too much flux (just remember to clean it off after your done it's corrosive and over time can damage things).

  • @jmicari
    @jmicari 6 months ago +17

    Great idea. They should have just extended the pads all the way from the top to the bottom of the board to make a single board that supports both orientations. You just flip the board depending on how your micro USB port is oriented.

    • @WillWill56
      @WillWill56 6 months ago +4

      That's not possible with this design due to R1 and R2 taking up space, those resistors are needed to put USB-PD chargers into dumb charge mode, which provides 5 volts no questions asked to these old devices that need it.

    • @jasonbaker2341
      @jasonbaker2341 3 months ago

  • @cassioaraujo6279

  • @deadbluesky
    @deadbluesky 6 months ago +592

    You need to apply the flux first before soldering, also a board holder would help !! Anyway without real anchor through the board it won't be solid enough.

    • @R.B.
      @R.B. 6 months ago +22

      Hot glue, no. The problem is flexing and hot glue has too much flex. Epoxy would work, but long term it makes it unserviceable. I'd be concerned with the shoulder buttons for the same reason.

      its doubtful but maybe he had flux core solder.

  • @FR4M3Sharma
    @FR4M3Sharma 6 months ago +30

    Doesn't look like it can withstand slight more force than usual because it just uses the pads for suport, it's why many variants of usb micro and c have legs or anchorsto solder to, and it'll just rip off the traces when it breaks.

    • @VKsChannel
      @VKsChannel  6 months ago +3

    • @LuisGerardoAguilarTrujillo
      @LuisGerardoAguilarTrujillo 6 months ago +2

      you can use the front ground pads to solder the head of the usb c conector, this way you can reinforce the connector.

      same here, I was looking around for something like this about 5-6 months ago now and was also theorizing some (crazy) things that could maybe be possible? my idea was to use resistor legs to extend the contacts up off the board and then have a port sat on a board or flex that would have vias for the legs to thread through lol

    I do this another way, I have a flex with micro usb pads on one side and type c 6 pin on the other. I solder the port to the flex, then the whole flex gets soldered to the board - they're weaker than smd connectors, but good enough as adapters. I think this solution is going to fly off in time unless you used the through holes already present to solder resistor legs or something to the bottom of the C port to use as reinforcement.

    Because I do not secure the plate beforehand instead of leaving it dancing, only the image is saved.

    Maybe use some copper wire in an angle for increased mechanical strength? But it's a very cool thing.

    I think I would add some solid wire in there to reinforce the joint then maybe some hot glue. All the force is on the pads and solder. Not a very strong joint but this is a retrofit so you can't expect it to be as strong as it would be if it were original.

    I was looking for this a few weeks ago, because a micro usb connector broke in my old e-reader. Found some usb-c connector but they didn't fit. This comes at the perfect time.. ordered them, lets hope these doe fit :D

    I have an older hackRF I want to do this on. I really don't like that it's using a micro USB and I have to carry around a cable just for that. Thanks for the video, I liked and subscribed.

    It’s actually kind of nice to watch, thank you for giving me confidence in my soldering capabilities. I don’t think I’ve ever considered that I have soldering capabilities but… You have to play to win… Thanks for the viewers, cheers `-;

    I had the same idea years ago, I bought a dozen of USB-C headers to hack them inside wired game controllers for emulation, and for my old Android devices. Unfortunately I lack enough soldering skills to finish the project.

    To make the connection more solid you should have used some 26 -30 awg solid wire for the pads. Completely relying on solder for your connection will make the connector break off after a few plug ins.
