Rivercane

Rivercane is a large grass has been used by people indigenous to the southeast for items such as baskets, blowguns, building materials, and art. To learn more about all aspects of this, Clemson Extension's Amanda McNulty travels to the upstate of South Carolina on the banks of the Chattanooga River and talks with Nicole Hayler from the Chattooga Conservancy, naturalist Dr. Robert Carter, and NC State Extension Agent Adam Griffith.

Came here from a tumblr post. It was really cool learning about the River Cane. I didn’t know that there was bamboo native to North America. It’s sad to know that they declined, but it’s so wonderful to know that people are preserving it

I think I have some Arundinaria right down the road from me. Might be A. ticta and not A.gigantea, but I'll take a look next time I head to the post office. As for growing A.gigantea, I wouldn't be opposed to having some put on my land. There's a waterway and good overhead canopy that'd force the plant to grow tall towards the light. How fast it would grow? Well, that's up to it. Maybe in a decade there'd be something worth harvesting, but only if we get to planting it now.

This is the best video I've seen so far with details on how and when to transplant. I can't find any seeds anywhere, and no plants in Louisiana, but I have one coming from Mississippi. Hoping to find some local to the Atchafayala Swamp so that I can transplant as well. Keep up the great work!

How fast does it spread and grow? I just planted some cane at my creek which the banks have been eroding really bad but need to know how quickly this will take off.

Just curious but how can you talk about river cane and never mention that it was used widely as arrows for hunting? Id love to grow it where I live just for that reason. Glad to see it being replanted .

We are planning on doing some restoration of native River Cane in our forest/farm in Tennessee. This was inspirational and is motivating us to get going in February if we can find true native cane at a nursery (Arundinaria Gigantea)

Chris you can get rivercane (A. gigantea) from Bamboo Gardens Nursery. They carry their regular rivercane, a more cold-hardy variety called "Macon" and they also carry the closely related switchcane (A. tecta). I've had good luck with their plants. The only drawback is that they can be pricey. I hope this helps.

The fight is against privet ,ailanthus, amur honeysuckle ,chinese yam , uh kudzu ; and ya know the list goes on and on.
