I live in Tennessee and I am 77 yrs old. I remember my Grandpa use to make them. They were called "dumb bulls" here. We had no moose to call but it would scare the bee jeebies out of you if you didn't know what it was, it sounded like a lion roaring....
I remember my Dad making these, with a tobacco can, and old boot lace. He used to tape it up also, to kill the "tinny sound". Since he also was a fiddle player, he uses rosin on the lace, and also on his index finger & thumb. But he was using the entire length of the boot lace, to mimic the call of a cow. Worked rather well. I had totally forgotten about this. Thanks for making this video. Ok?....ok!....Awesome....:-)
I use samething up here in a Northern ontario first nation but the big red plastic folgders coffee and moose hide as the string. I wet the string in water and then make calls. Works good. Had 3 moose per year to feed my family and community.
I was taught the same technique by an Athabaskan elder as a kid growing up in Gakona Alaska. He used a rope through the coffee can and would get it wet. But I like this technique better I think. I’ll be cutting a strip off some moose leather I have. I’ll be testing it hunting the Yukon for Moose and Caribou with hopefully a nice fat black bear soon. Great video !
i love it man what you do i spend a lot of time in the woods as young boy walk about 5 miles ever day to check my rabbit snears now i am old and love thinking of them good day keep up the good work and take care and pice with ya grandpa gordon prince edward island canada
It’s all good to know Robert Thanks for sharing So simple to make But it’s knowing and I know now..... we don’t have any wild moose here in the UK only in zoos 👍👌🇬🇧
i have been using that method for 25 years, my uncle showed me, if you slide your fingers ovber the whole length it can make most sounds of a cow or bull
Wow hunting season is here too bad I don’t live in the bush I would make these if I was a moose hunter, awesome video thanks I’ve learned something today
Hi Robert. You reminded me something when I was a child. We used 2 tobacco cans and 1 string stretched between them. We had 2 walkie-talkies like the real US soldiers! 😏
These can calls do work & they are really loud but a plastic Folgers can is better. Get the large size....unfortunately as everyone knows the coffee is horrible, but you can take a hit for the moose & the can is great. The trouble with a metal can is that the metal rattle if you tap it or knock it is an obvious unnatural sound which will carry like crazy cross water or in the bush.
And sure does work .the grunt of a bull.and a few tree rubs .and you can walk to them.hope to see a vedio on the hunt. I never tough of trees saps. Only use water. Beside my mouth .love this call. I use a vocka plastic bottle tape to a broom handle .just cut of the bottom of the bottle and sounds unreal.when scraping on threes.love the vedios keep them coming . Pease my friend
Robert, I’ve made that type of call before, if I may,, I found a pure 100% tin can sounds a little more Moosey. I think that can of yours has cardboard sides. Thanks.
I've seen a moose call made from a shoe lace and coffee can, but not leather and coffee can. I found a coffee can (becoming more difficult to find now days) and I will make one of your calls and try it next season. Do you make a birch bark call too? Thanks for sharing! Awesome! ;)

Emaan Jaffri these aren’t the best for calling a Sammy
They're right. Instead consider threatening the only people left on earth he has any attachment to. It seems to work for everyone else. :)

Sounds like a Porcupine farting lol.
HERE SAMMY SAMMY
That's great my dad told me about doing that with a regular tin can back in the 30s when he was young to make people think it was a wampus cat .
Cool. There's a Brazilian percussion instrument called "cuica" that might do the trick too
I've seen them where you pull the leather from the inside of the can. Seems to be louder and echo more. Anyone else?
i used a coffee can caller all my life, best ever but i use the all tin can and a long shoelace, I can make that sound like a cow or bull
good show
I live in town. I want to make one to mess with people. Lol

I like that blue handled knife
Got one in the hunting kit but I used an old boot lace. These work great with practice.
Hey mama! I can see a rutting bull prick his ears up and check that out. I'm gonna try that one pretty soon.
Right on man! Fellow FN hunter here and my grandpa showed me the same thing :)
Catching up on your older video. Love them. Keep it up. Chet O'Brien
Ive seen this too when i was younger,, never tried it myself, but has anyone ever called in a moose with it? Just curious
I really enjoyed that. Simple and effective.
My dad showed me this once. Was pretty surprised. Cool eh.
I have seen these before! Cool video!
I have relatives who live in Ft. Nelson, who trap, maybe you know each other. We used to make those moose calls years ago, really cool.
Very nice, I am going to have to try that.
Very cool!
Amazing, I’ve always called vocally but that does sound like a cow call.
Thanks but I personally prefer just calling Sam it’s a little easier
i love it man what you do i spend a lot of time in the woods as young boy walk about 5 miles ever day to check my rabbit snears now i am old and love thinking of them good day keep up the good work and take care and pice with ya grandpa gordon prince edward island canada
New subscriber! My dad taught me this unique way to call moose out, excellent method. 🤘
COOL TRICK ! except moose hide is a bit hard to come by where i live in the city ..will a piece of regular leather strip work as well?
Small red Folgers one works perfect 👌🏽
It’s all good to know Robert
Thanks for sharing

my dad showed how to make when i was a kid. I'm 60 now. he called it a dumb bull. i wish i could tell him it's a moose call
Why not use an all metal can? Juices, beans, big tins!
that was unexpected
Hi Robert. You reminded me something when I was a child. We used 2 tobacco cans and 1 string stretched between them. We had 2 walkie-talkies like the real US soldiers! 😏

Do you have ideas for a deer call?
right on. sound like good grunt call
Not quite the same thing. My grandpa use to have me pull his finger and he would make a similar sound.
And sure does work .the grunt of a bull.and a few tree rubs .and you can walk to them.hope to see a vedio on the hunt. I never tough of trees saps. Only use water. Beside my mouth .love this call.
