No no no. Again the sames mistakes about the 15th New York Infantry! The war memory writing by the commanding officer of the first compagnie of this regiment, Arthure W Little (title: "From Harlem to the Rhine") contradict you in somes points: (making anything about this regiment without read this book is a felony). 1) The no playing band when they leave France is a lie: "Upon the afternoon of january 31 st, I led the troops for our embarkation of that day from Camp Pontanezen to and throught the city of Brest, down to the docks where tenders waited to carry us out to the steamer. We marched in silence. Every man had been warned and every man had taken this warning seriously. We might fave been off upon a mission similar to that of the immortalized "Burial of Sir John Moore": "Not a drum was heard - Not a funeral note." .... As our last tender was ready to shove off, the Chief of Staff of the base who stood talking with me, said "Major, I didn't notice before, but you've got your band with ou, haven't you?" "Yes sir," I answered. "Can they play?" "Yes sir." "Well, why don't you give us a tune as you leave?" "I"m sure it would be very welcome to us, sir;" I answered; " but I'm not taking any chance of losing our sailing place. If you so direct, sir, Il will give the order." "Yes, yes, by all means, let us have some music!" "Mr Europe", I addressed the leader, "you may play!" And so our men, once more with the music that they loved so well stirring their hearts, hade farewell to France. This Chief of Staff was a human being. " 2) The Henry Johnson's rifle had no jam. He had empty his rifle and he had no time to reload his rifle. Same book: "The Labelle rifle [in reality it was a Berthier rifle...] carries a magazine clip of but three cartridges. Johnson fired his three shots - the last on almost muzzle to breast of the Boche bearing down upon him. As the German fell, a comrade jumped over his body, pistol in hand, to avenge his death. There was no time for reloading. Johnson swung his rifle round his head, and brought it down with a thrown blow upon the head of the German. "
3) They had some training before embarking for France, and intensive trainingby the french army between mid march and mid may 1918 or your pleasure, an extract of a letter of Colonnel W Hayward (commandig officer to the 15th infantry New Yorkrenamed 369th us infantry) to colonnel Reginald L Foster, 52nd pioneer infantry: "There are no american troops anywhere near us, that i can find out, and we are "les enfants perdu" and glad of it. Our great american, general simply put the black orphan in a basket, set it on the door step of the French, pulled the bell, and went away. I said this to a french colonnel with an "english spoken here" sign on him, and he said: "weelcome leetle black babbie."
And then, a year after the war ended, we had the Battle of Brewery Gultch in Bisbee, Arizona. The police chief there formed a posse to "disarm all the negroes they could find" which for context was the buffalo soldiers of the 10th Cavalry that were in town to march in the Independence Day parade.
According to W. Allison Sweeney in "History Of The American Negro In The Great World War", the line held by the Harlem Hellfighters was 50km long between Rheims and the Argonne forest until 14 July, 1918, Bastille Day. This comprised 20% of the entirety of the American line. A line held fast by Americans fighting under the French, because their own countrymen refused to serve with them.
@@fudgepacker2858 Except that it actually is the only reason. While it's true Pershing created an independent American force for troop morale, casualty accountability, and to give Pres. Wilson a better position for peace talk negotiations, "...Pershing made an exception for the black soldiers of the 369th, reassigning them to the French on March 10. (Pershing’s attitudes toward black troops were complicated; he served with the all-black 10th Cavalry in 1895, from whence he got his nickname “Black Jack,” but wrote in his 1931 memoir that black soldiers needed more training because of “lower capacity and lack of education.”) Hayward, who had lobbied Pershing to let his troops fight, captured the ironies of the general’s decision in a letter. “A fairy tale has materialized,” wrote Hayward. “We are now a combat unit…. Our great American general simply put the black orphan in a basket, set it on the doorstep of the French, pulled the bell, and went away.” Smithsonian Magazine May 14, 2018 And since Col. Hayward was the 369th's CO, and was there, he probably knows best.
French soldiers can't refuse the front or they were condamned to death penalty. They were just not enough because all of them were wounded or dead. Thank you.

As a Pole I salute brave Harlem Hellfighters, our brothers from overseas - since we've been named "White Negroes of Europe" by the Haitians. The Polish Blue Army in France, made in large part of Polish Americans, fought at the same time as the Hellfighters in 1918, fighting for freedom of Poland. Poles also faced discrimination in the US at that time for being Catholic and "wrong kind of white" & of course facing persecution & antipolonism from Germany & Russia back in Europe.
the Haitians killed the French and the Poles. France sent you to ur death. Poles never saw black people until the U.S brought them into Europe during Marshal law at the end of the war. Hellfighters is more B.s of a story. The hoax of black victimization is never ending. Do not let them in Poland, your women will be raped and you crime will sky rocket.

What makes the story of the Harlem Hellfighters so enduring isn't simply what they endured, and what they are. It was their character and competence. These guys weren't just an all-black regiment. They were also supremely qualified soldiers who proved their mettle on the battlefield. That is what makes their lack of recognition even more of a crime. These guys were heroes, through and through. In fact, this was probably one of the first songs that actually inspired me to go out of my way to learn more about the subject, and I'm honestly glad I did because I wasn't feeling patient enough to wait for the Sabaton History episode. xD
Love the idea of an album about all the "[blank] death" legends. Not sure about "Colours of Death" though, maybe "Shades of Death"? And Johnson absolutely deserves his own song!
How many colors of death do we have right now? I've got White Death, Lady Death (Russia), and Black Death . All we need now is green, blue, orange, purple, pink, yellow, and grey.
Waiting to hear Harlem hellfighter since simple history 2017, then read Harlem hellfighter in Graphic Novel 2019, then hear Sabaton on March 2021 when I put the comment asking for music video if possible, and finally this today 2023. . It kind of bugged me that the actual song and lyrics never mention what was controversial about them, or that they were from Harlem, in the non-History version track
On one hand, I like that they celebrate how utterly bad ass they were. On the other hand, I completely understand your sentiment because I'm part Native American and I was ecstatic about Ghost in the Trenches shining a light on bad ass Native Americans/First Nations. Growing up, I learned about the Red Tails but not the Hellfighters. I hope Sabaton keeps writing songs about the Hellfighters and Red Tails, as well as the Wind Talkers, the last Blackfoot War Chief (Dr. Joe Medicine Crow), and the Sioux who fought in both WW2 and Korea (Woodrow Keeble). Edit: I can't believe that I forgot about Edward A. Carter, aka the fastest tommygun on the western front. If I remember correctly, African American born in Shanghai because his father was a missionary. He ended up becoming a foreign volunteer at the age of 14 fighting against the Japanese for the Chinese Nationalists, but got booted when they found out that he lied about his age. By the time he enlisted in the US Army and went to Europe, he was in his late twenties and had the most combat experience of anyone on the western front, where he took a demotion to stay on the front lines. He also spoke five languages including German, and would personally interrogate the SS that they took prisoner in German while being patched up. I found out about him in the book Bad Ass: Ultimate Death Match.

In the eternally long list of things I wish I had the time to dig into more, I find the different treatments of underclass/slave/segregated military units fascinating. You have everything from outright bans on ethnic or religious groups from enlisting, to cases like this where they were relegated to non-combat duty, to instances where they were used as cannon fodder, to rare cases of equal or even elite status. I feel like there has to be some meaningful insight we can gain into the societies that implement these different styles. I think if you asked the average historically illiterate person today, they would expect all such troops to have been considered expendable, but that seems to rarely be the case. I have no real thesis as to why so many different cultures handled the same situation differently, but it's interesting to think about.
His grave can be visited in Washington DC. It was originally thought that he was buried in a pauper’s grave, but the US military had buried him in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
That was some great history. I knew that Blacks fought with the French, and that they were very brave. I also knew that Black soldiers from America were always brave and honored their family's no matter where they were assigned. I enjoyed working with Blacks in my military career. We were one big happy unit.
2:28 The fact that they decided to include the "secret information" in the whole SICBAT thing is quite funny if you ask me. As horrible as racism is sometimes the ignorance involved can come across as funny: Like issuing a formal military document to another nation concerning "secrets" as if black people are not just people with "black" skin and instead some kind of new discovery or mysterious unknown force. Like so many other stories we learn about from Sabaton and Sabaton History. This needs a movie, and not some sugar coated Hollywood style. Show us the ugly sudes of it and be honest. We as a nation can handle it. Honor these men.
I always held respect for the Harlem Hellfighters since I heard about them when I began reading about WWI a few years ago. It's not just because I, myself, am a minority but it was, well... they didn't lose ground and none of them were ever taken prisoner - how the Hell can you not respect a unit like that? The whole regiment just sounds badass! BTW I know it could have been a joke when you guys were talking, but one "colored" song you could do is about the Filipino guerilla fighters during WWII. When my relatives were willing to talk about it, they mentioned how my grandfather (Who was just a boy) had to be kept hidden so he wouldn't be killed by Japanese soldiers, and he eventually joined the resistance and joined the guerilla warfare against the Imperial occupiers. My family actually kept the rifle he used during the war until a decade or two later when it was stolen but that's besides the point, I'm just saying it would be a cool topic to do about the Pacific Theater.
Amazes me how much the U.S. military didn't want minorities serving with the rest of the troops. And how many of them severed with distinction and honor.
Respect to these Americans Heroes who endured the Evils and Bigotries of the Dixie Pig Filth in America while serving their country abroad in war and going above and beyond for their country in war.
Well We can’t rightly call them Dixie because it wasn’t just the southern states. Unfortunately it was a horrible thing that had been going on in New York ,Indiana Maine, and other Northern states as well. Hitler was quoted as saying "give me a battalion of South African Boer fighters and I will rule the world", not sure where this quote comes from but the South Africans were well versed in guerilla warfare from their history with the British, reading this history their tenacity would be understandable.
I learned from visiting the Holocaust museum in Washington DC that Hitler and the Nazis targeted black people and people of mixed race during their time in power.
I work in a place where a majority of the employees are black and I can guarantee not even 3% of them know about the hellfighters to the point the ignorance gets reversed because I am white I am not allowed to do certain jobs, I can’t be vocal about issues, and I am not allowed to make jokes in “white speak” unfortunately I am inspired by stories of men like this I am white but I am an American first skin color does not make anyone better or worse, we are together in this world and acting like we aren’t is just as disgusting as any war crime.
I respectfully disagree on the grounds of those men were not born in Africa. They were born in America. Therefore they are American. An example; my family linage hails from mostly Ireland, Scotland, and whales, I am not called English-American just American for I was born in the U.S. I truly believe there should be no separation when it comes to talking about the US Born populous. One fact about Henry Johnson that wasn’t mentioned is that when he died, his family wasn’t given his body and it was believed he had been buried in a pauper’s grave. However, it turned out that the military had given him a military burial and he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
The Harlem Hellfighters had their roots in the Buffalo Soldiers, who were commanded by General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing. He had great respect for them, even though he couldn't come right out and say it. Politics at the time weren't where they should've been.
Absolutely true. Other officers used to call him "N-word jack" since he served with the Buffalo Soldiers and treated them fairly, until Pershing got promoted to General and then it became Blackjack.

This is probably my second favourite song of the album, after Christmas Truce, and I'm incredibly happy to see it's covered. It's fast, heavy and distorted, almost feels like, if you lowered the tuning, and add some harsh vocals it could switch genre.

Mad Respect to Henry Johnson. He deserved so much more than what he got in life. Good thing he eventually got the recognition he deserved. A movie should be made about him. But at least Sabaton sang an awesome song about his unit.

On the discussion of different death colours like White death, black death etc. I would like to stake my claim here to be known from now on as the "Lavender Death". I will also accept "Tyrian Purple" Death and "Mauve" Death.

I'm so glad you guys talked about the 369th undergoing horrible mistreatment at home, this is by far the most important detail about their history that speaks a lot to the despicable effects of American systematic racism. I don't know I'm no military expert but sending untrained soldiers on sentry duty or having them hold 20% of your line with 1% of the soldiers (still untrained) seems like the easiest way to loose a war.

The treatment these men faced is sickening to see. The fact they did what they did and to that level while they were being shunned by their own country is amazing. It really speaks volumes to their bravery.

Allison Sweeney in "History Of The American Negro In The Great World War", the line held by the Harlem Hellfighters was 50km long between Rheims and the Argonne forest until 14 July, 1918, Bastille Day. This comprised 20% of the entirety of the American line. A line held fast by Americans fighting under the French, because their own countrymen refused to serve with them.

Wilson a better position for peace talk negotiations, "...Pershing made an exception for the black soldiers of the 369th, reassigning them to the French on March 10. As a Pole I salute brave Harlem Hellfighters, our brothers from overseas - since we've been named "White Negroes of Europe" by the Haitians. The Polish Blue Army in France, made in large part of Polish Americans, fought at the same time as the Hellfighters in 1918, fighting for freedom of Poland. Poles also faced discrimination in the US at that time for being Catholic and "wrong kind of white" & of course facing persecution & antipolonism from Germany & Russia back in Europe.

What makes the story of the Harlem Hellfighters so enduring isn't simply what they endured, and what they are. It was their character and competence. These guys weren't just an all-black regiment. They were also supremely qualified soldiers who proved their mettle on the battlefield. That is what makes their lack of recognition even more of a crime. These guys were heroes, through and through.
In fact, this was probably one of the first songs that actually inspired me to go out of my way to learn more about the subject, and I'm honestly glad I did because I wasn't feeling patient enough to wait for the Sabaton History episode. xD
They were primarily black, but there were other races in the group like Puerto Ricans.

It kind of bugged me that the actual song and lyrics never mention what was controversial about them, or that they were from Harlem, in the non-History version track
On one hand, I like that they celebrate how utterly bad ass they were. On the other hand, I completely understand your sentiment because I'm part Native American and I was ecstatic about Ghost in the Trenches shining a light on bad ass Native Americans/First Nations. Growing up, I learned about the Red Tails but not the Hellfighters. I hope Sabaton keeps writing songs about the Hellfighters and Red Tails, as well as the Wind Talkers, the last Blackfoot War Chief (Dr. Joe Medicine Crow), and the Sioux who fought in both WW2 and Korea (Woodrow Keeble).
Edit: I can't believe that I forgot about Edward A. Carter, aka the fastest tommygun on the western front. If I remember correctly, African American born in Shanghai because his father was a missionary. He ended up becoming a foreign volunteer at the age of 14 fighting against the Japanese for the Chinese Nationalists, but got booted when they found out that he lied about his age. By the time he enlisted in the US Army and went to Europe, he was in his late twenties and had the most combat experience of anyone on the western front, where he took a demotion to stay on the front lines. He also spoke five languages including German, and would personally interrogate the SS that they took prisoner in German while being patched up. I found out about him in the book Bad Ass: Ultimate Death Match.

In the eternally long list of things I wish I had the time to dig into more, I find the different treatments of underclass/slave/segregated military units fascinating. You have everything from outright bans on ethnic or religious groups from enlisting, to cases like this where they were relegated to non-combat duty, to instances where they were used as cannon fodder, to rare cases of equal or even elite status. I feel like there has to be some meaningful insight we can gain into the societies that implement these different styles. I think if you asked the average historically illiterate person today, they would expect all such troops to have been considered expendable, but that seems to rarely be the case. I have no real thesis as to why so many different cultures handled the same situation differently, but it's interesting to think about.

Henry Johnson, born in N.C. and grew up in my town of Albany, NY. Even has a street named after him. Now come back to play Albany, NY again!!! 😂
His grave can be visited in Washington DC. It was originally thought that he was buried in a pauper’s grave, but the US military had buried him in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

That was some great history. I knew that Blacks fought with the French, and that they were very brave. I also knew that Black soldiers from America were always brave and honored their family's no matter where they were assigned. I enjoyed working with Blacks in my military career. We were one big happy unit.

I always held respect for the Harlem Hellfighters since I heard about them when I began reading about WWI a few years ago. It's not just because I, myself, am a minority but it was, well... they didn't lose ground and none of them were ever taken prisoner - how the Hell can you not respect a unit like that? The whole regiment just sounds badass!
BTW I know it could have been a joke when you guys were talking, but one "colored" song you could do is about the Filipino guerilla fighters during WWII. When my relatives were willing to talk about it, they mentioned how my grandfather (Who was just a boy) had to be kept hidden so he wouldn't be killed by Japanese soldiers, and he eventually joined the resistance and joined the guerilla warfare against the Imperial occupiers. My family actually kept the rifle he used during the war until a decade or two later when it was stolen but that's besides the point, I'm just saying it would be a cool topic to do about the Pacific Theater.

I learned from visiting the Holocaust museum in Washington DC that Hitler and the Nazis targeted black people and people of mixed race during their time in power.
I work in a place where a majority of the employees are black and I can guarantee not even 3% of them know about the hellfighters to the point the ignorance gets reversed because I am white I am not allowed to do certain jobs, I can’t be vocal about issues, and I am not allowed to make jokes in “white speak” unfortunately I am inspired by stories of men like this I am white but I am an American first skin color does not make anyone better or worse, we are together in this world and acting like we aren’t is just as disgusting as any war crime.

One fact about Henry Johnson that wasn’t mentioned is that when he died, his family wasn’t given his body and it was believed he had been buried in a pauper’s grave. However, it turned out that the military had given him a military burial and he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

The Harlem Hellfighters had their roots in the Buffalo Soldiers, who were commanded by General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing. He had great respect for them, even though he couldn't come right out and say it. Politics at the time weren't where they should've been.

Absolutely true. Other officers used to call him "N-word jack" since he served with the Buffalo Soldiers and treated them fairly, until Pershing got promoted to General and then it became Blackjack.

I don't know I'm no military expert but sending untrained soldiers on sentry duty or having them hold 20% of your line with 1% of the soldiers (still untrained) seems like the easiest way to loose a war.
The final bass note at the end always gives me chills, just feels like an artillery report.
