Man, I don't care if some people think it's cheesy, I will never stop loving, "Waiting for a Star to Fall." It truly does embody the best aspects of 80's positivity and optimism. What's so wrong about that? Not a dang thing!
Waiting for a Star to Fall is one of my all time favorite songs and videos. I'm mid 40s now and I still remember asking for that song when bands would take requests. I would not have wanted anybody else to cover this song. Everything they bring to it and the video makes it so magical. It's nostalgic to me.
I’m 70 and feel the same way. Was such a great way to start & end the day. Not to mention during the day. Just made you feel like good things were going to happen. 🎶🎸🎼🥁🎵
Waiting for a Star to Fall is almost everybody's GUILTY PLEASURE. Admit it! As much as I like hard rock, when this song comes on I can't stop myself from singing along. It makes every moment just a little bit better.
DAD,, that's a GOOD point,, I like hard stuff but I can't listen to s*** like Metallica all the time,, I don't know about anybody else but it makes me angry and depressed listening to distorted chords and "sad but true-AHH" too long lol... Three weeks and half the metal bands out there were ending each line with -AHH... Even if the line ended with a consonant ... These lighter tunes that people think of as Pop make a good mix,, Black Sabbath War pigs, then Christopher Cross sailing, sounds good to me...
No one should ever feel guilty about liking that song "Waiting For a Star To Fall," even or especially if they usually listen to hard rock. Musical tastes are people's own business, and anyone who would ridicule you is not worth worrying about.
This was an absolute master class in storytelling. I too had a crush on a girl and every time this song comes on I go right back to that time in my life. The 80s were a very special time for so many of us.
As a hard rocker in the 80's, I remember quietly loving this song on the radio in my car for several months. Lots of great 80's pop songs, and this is one of my favs. Nice to get their back story here!
Omg, thank you SO MUCH for this video! “Waiting For a Star to Fall” is one of my VERY FAVORITE songs EVER!!! It is so incredibly beautiful, soulful, magical, and joyful. 😍🥰❤️🎉🎶
Some other words I’d use to describe this song : innocent, whimsical, effervescent. Seriously, as soon as I hear the first few notes of this song, it puts the biggest grin on my face and makes me so happy. There’s a scene in the music video where Shannon is twirling around, and that moment perfectly describes what I feel like and want to do whenever I hear this song! I was just shy of my 11th birthday when this song was released and I have absolutely loved it ever since that day! I ordered the CD online back in 2005 and I received an email confirmation of my order. The email was signed “Shannon”. I wrote back and asked if this happened to be THE Shannon (Rubicam) from Boy Meets Girl, and IT WAS HER! We emailed back and forth a little and it was such a thrill for me! 🥰😍❤️🎶
"Waiting For A Star To Fall" is an excellent song, but it's about not having the love, and struggling enough that he wishes he didn't feel that strongly about her. I think the greatest perfect love song would be about actually being in that mutual love. Musically it sounds so uplifting that a lot of people imagine lyrics more positive than what are actually there.
Waiting For A Star To Fall is a song that despite being a rock guy, I frequently played. I actually bought the album. It was just so good! I definitely never changed the station if it came on, whether on the radio or MTV.
@@RBS_ I was 18. A mere youth compared to 22. That seemed quite old to me at the time but not any longer at the tender age of 53 and counting. I saw a poster in the GP surgery today ( there to have a zit inspected- all clear given) aimed at those in their seventies. That is me in 17 years if I make it. Oh. My. God.
The video for "Waiting for a Star to Fall" is such a portrayal of young parents in love that it's interesting that they were actually struggling so much. "Reel Life" has been a favorite album since it first came out. I wish you could have done live interviews with George and Shannon. I knew they had divorced, then reunited as songwriters off and on since them, and I've often wondered about the dynamics of that.

I make no apology for adoring this song! It isn't a cheesy ditty from the 80s. It's a funky--can you feel the groove under the tinny 80s production? And listen to his vocals--soulful, smooth, not to mention a soaring falsetto! Plus, love the lyrics! The way the line: "Who says I should let a wild one go free?" slides right into melody & rhythm in an innovative way (emphasizing the lyric "wild" an extra beat)....SO GOOD! The perfect pop song!
I really liked "waiting for a star to fall" I listen to it frequently....an automatic "pick me up"! This song exemplified the 80s.....fun, optimism, clean.........hopefully the kids of today can get a taste of what life was like back then.
I think it's really great when former lovers and/or spouses who were in bands together, but continued to work together even after their relationships fell apart. Sort of like Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance, and John and Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac.
"Waiting For A Star To Fall" was sitting at it's #5 peak the week I was born, behind Poison's "Every Rose Has It's Thorn". I actually am quite pleased about that, because it is a good song.
I forgot about this heartwarming song. I didn't know they wrote all these other hits. It's so nice that they still have a good relationship. I'm going back to their videos. Thank you.
Love the 80s optimistic, innocent pop vibe of Waiting for a Star to Fall. I can see why they struggled in the grunge era, and I’m so impressed that they wrote those two smashes for Whitney Houston. It’s like they made her career.
You are so right. Whitney Houston's peak was probably The Bodyguard soundtrack but those 80's songs by this duo helped pave the way to her megastardom.
I have the piano sheets for this. It's not as easy as you'd think. The song constantly moves. There's no real downtime. And it has one of the best melodies ever written. And the lyrics reflect the distress in the relationship despite its uptempo nature. Definitely in my top 10 of the 1980s.
The greatest love song ever written and produced Shannon and George were inspired from the Heavens to come up with such a beautiful love song. Waiting for Star to fall,,,,,their video together is a love video....and its great they still are composing together today....love love love
My band started performing in 2020 (we formed in November 2019), and on the night that our lockdowns were being announced due to the pandemic, I was with my band and we were learning and jamming Waiting for a Star to Fall together as we had decided to include this in our list of covers for future performances alongside some of our original songs. I was 17 in ‘88, and while my musical tastes were New Wave and alternative (still are), I do remember liking this song. It’s four minutes of harmless fun. (And the Whitney songs are straight-up bangers to this day.)
I was in preschool when this song came out; it's one of the first songs in my life I ever knew by heart. Maybe the first. I have a primal, emotional connection to it and likely always will.
Waiting For A Star To Fall is going to be played at my wedding. I love this song and I have been listening to it for the majority of my life. Thank you for featuring the song.
❤ I love that song "Waiting for a Star to Fall." It's such a well written and sunged song. Kudos to Boy Meets Girl for creating it 👏🏾. Thanks so much for covering this group and work 👍🏾.
Always love these entire stories of artists careers. I had no idea they wrote some of Ms. Houston's biggest hits too. Waiting For a Star is definitely a 80s sleeper smash hits , great call. Thanks for the story behind the music and the artists that created the music professor
...a bit O' trivia I'll drop here for ya.....Whitney had a tune called "If I Say Yes" held for her (for the 2nd LP)'s 1st single, and UK R&B group Five Star heard it and SNATCHED it....then, Clive asked Boy Meets Girl for "I Wanna Dance...", because they were gonna go with a cover of "For The Love Of You" (Isley Brothers) as Whit's (ditched) next single, and he wanted a S-U-R-E-F-I-R-E-S-M-A-S-H..... ....he GOT it... ; )
@@RBS_ Five Star were huge in Britain for a couple of years. Probably not in America. Rain Or Shine, There's A Brand New World, Someone, Somewhere and Stay Out Of My Life are all excellent songs. They were portrayed in the press as a British version of the Jackson 5 and I think they were fans of MJ. They could really sing too.
Waiting for A Star to Fall is definitely a go to for me to go with my set list of favorite songs during my high school period. It's just one of those hard to forget and the way it made us feel so alive in that particular decade.
I had a high school radio show with my friends in 1989 and this was my favorite song to play. Still love it to this day, and you were totally right to call out that 80’s tribute video featuring it. Love your channel!
I remember listening to this song on MTV! I was a young newlywed and like to blast this song while cleaning my little house. Thank you for sharing this. Brought back so many happy memories 😊
I loved the 80's, though my life was very rough growing up in that era, the positive always outweighs it because when i look back , the things i most remember is the music, the movies , the WWF, C64, the NES, Sega master system and the arcades... These were my escape and I'll always treasure those times, those days. Yes this song takes me back to that time as much as any song from that era. The glorious 80's. PS. Yes i did see that tribute video to the 80's a while back, it was awesome !
Graduated high school in '88.. while it wasn't a standout for me at the time, it always held its own. I probably wouldn't have sought out it, but always happy to hear it! Loved learning all of that behind it- makes it all the more endearing 😊
I still love "Waiting for a Star to Fall"! Sometimes it makes me cry because of nostalgia and other times makes me happy. I loved it when I was ten years old in the fifth grade. I didn't care much for the other songs. Thanks for sharing about one of my all time favorites!
Classic rock is all I’ve ever loved, I must admit, “Waiting For A Star To Fall” is my hidden guilty pleasure. You would definitely catch me singing this at the top of my lungs!
One of my all time favorites, so I'm glad it's getting its due now. I didn't know that Boy Meets Girl put out that much music. I'm gonna have to look it up.
The Boy Meets Girl name practically sang itself when I was listening to the teaser. I knew it was them and that the song was "Waiting for a Star to Fall" when you mentioned a songwriting couple who'd written 2 number #1 hits for another (Whitney). How do I keep doing this? I was 9 when "Waiting for a Star to Fall" hit. I always enjoyed it, partly because George sounds largely the way Michael Jackson did in his early career with the Jacksons. As an adult, I've tried my hand at playing the song myself. I wish Boy Meets Girl had hit more frequently.
I want to thank you so much for this video. I was active in George and Shannon's life during this whole time. Here's a tidbit for you - my husband shattered his ankle in 1986 about the time the video was being brainstormed. In a midnight phone call George was in one of his midnight meetings. To help my depression of my husband being the hospital George asked me what I want to see in their video for Waiting for a Star to Fall - I remember my answer to this day - I told George that "after viewing the video I want to feel like I've just spent a Sunday afternoon with you and Shannon...." and thus the brainstorm I provided was the base idea for the video. That video means so much to me with more hidden messages in it that most do not know. I even remember when Whitney Houston was in the process of selecting "How Will I Know". These two are inspiration for my own music and they even sang at my wedding. So, again, thank you so much.
I was in my 20’s the whole 80’s decade, what a blast and a blessing to have been young and experience it as it happened. It was something so special about the 80’s compared to other decades! Through all of the pop, funk, dance, new wave, rock of the 80’s, it’s ultimately those cheesy love songs that we remember and cherish the most as all these years go by. And Waiting For A Star To Fall is one of my most cherished and loved songs from the 80’s, I’ll never grow tired of hearing it! ♥️♥️♥️
One of the great songs of 1988, and there were a ton of them! My biggest memory of 1988 was when Debbie Gibson released "Foolish Beat" and I FINALLY bought her album. It was the first album I actually bought, and I was 16. I was a singles guy. Then when "Foolish Beat" hit #1 the week of 6/26/88, I was ecstatic!!! Ahh, to be a teen in the 80's with my singer crushes. LOL!
Red Hot is a good track off the album. While successful in the UK to admit to thinking her music was good was very rare. She had a number of very good songs.
One of the best songs from the '80s! Absolutely love this song from its release till now! Makes me wish i was back in sophomore year in college everytime i hear this classic!
When I was playing the hits on a local Top 40 station back in the '90s, I used to always use "Waiting for a Star to Fall" as a fill song if I was running short of the top of the hour. Great stuff!! 😁
I love this song! Another one was Mary’s Prayer. I call it Carnival music, holding your sweethearts hand, strolling through a fair at night, all the lights and laughter, playing skeeball and eating cotton candy. Just sweet and wholesome.
This is one of my absolute favorites. It reminds of of waiting for that special girl (who is now my wife of nearly 17 years) to notice me. And It’s my ringtone when she calls me…never fails to put a smile on my face. It such a beautiful and uplifting song. As for the RUclips montage, I remember watching that over and over when it came out to be sure I caught everything. Perfect dose of nostalgia. So glad to hear that George and Shannon have been able to maintain their friendship through the tough times. As for the other great feel good songs poll…I’d put King of Wishful Thinking (loved your episode on that one too!) and Heaven is a Place on Earth on that list too. Thanks so much for featuring a song that I absolutely love…all of your episodes are great, but this one was extra special!
Truly an odd situation, but that makes it all the more unique and interesting. One can't imagine how that must have felt to have conflicting emotions from real life to the song's portrayal. Cheers as always man!
I was in college and I met a woman 15 years older than me. She had a crush and one day, she gave me two cassette tapes: one was Edie Brikell and the New Bohemians and the second was this album. In her car, this was the first song I heard before we made out. Long red hair, slender figure, gorgeous blue eyes…..this song always takes me back there!
Videos like this is why I enjoy your blog. Real life stories from and about the most talented people in the music industry. The behind the scenes stories of their triumphs and their tribulations. Thanks again for all of your hard work.
I loved 'Waiting For A Star to Fall' - first time I heard it on the radio, I popped out to the record store and bought the 45 -- it was such a 'feel good' song! I didn't realize that this song-writing duo wrote all those other hits, but listening to them in your video, you can certainly tell it was written by them (...still learning in my older age!)
AC has been just about my favorite music genre for about as long as I've listened to the radio. This single has always made me feel good inside, not sure exactly why. I found the CD in the bargain bin in the early 90s and bought it, and even though it only had two singles released, I found myself enjoying every track on it. I have since gone through my CD collection and sold or given away any CD that I didn't consider essential. I considered giving away Reel Life, but found that I just couldn't. I like it too much. I've always been curious to know more about this couple/band, and your video filled me in nicely. Thanks Adam.
absolutely love waiting for a star to fall, played that on repeat back in the day in my old clunker car, amazing vocals, sax & piano very much an 80's upbeat closet classic
You literally summed up my experience......I saw the RUclips 80s video that used it to celebrate that Era. I had completely forgotten about it, but the second I heard it, I was flooded with not only memories but FEELINGS of that time....and of my father who would pass just several years later. It immediately went into my playlist!
I've got to say that Waiting For A Star To Fall by Boy Meets Girl was one of those "guilty pleasure" songs that I liked, but sometimes I didn't want to admit to others that I liked it!! What a damn shame that they didn't get better than they did!! Thanks so much for the deep dive into this song and their career, my friend!!
For anyone interested there is a phenomenal 2003 house/electronica song that melds the words “In My Arms Baby Yeah” from “Waiting For A Star To Fall” and the keyboard riff by Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes” The artist is Mylo. The song is “In My Arms”. Hope you enjoy it.
I love this song, and also Oh, Girl. It has a truly joyful sound, and the video is wonderful. I'm glad that while they're no longer life partners, they've managed to stay friends, and continue working together.
Been 'waiting' for you to do this one. Nice job! Waiting For a Star to Fall really has become a signature '80s hit. But personally, Oh Girl from '85 will always be my favorite. Was a weekend DJ back then on a station that was not afraid to play 'the hits' no matter if they were on the charts or not. Miss those days of quality radio. Keep up the good work!
I'm a child of the 80's but only discovered this song recently when I saw the most excellent video on MTV. I put this down to it not charting so well here in Oz back then. What a great song to finish up the 80's with though. I've been listening to it a lot lately.
Thanks again, Adam. I knew *some* of the backstory here, but not nearly as much as you told us here today. Wonderful! This song still holds up so well.
I had the cassette single of this song and would just drive around listening to it over and over. It helped me a lot when I was down and still has and uplifting effect on me today. Absolutey love it!
Poll: What is your pick for the GREATEST FEEL-GOOD song of the 80s?
All I Need is a Miracle, Mike and the Mechanics
"We Are The World" - USA for Africa.
"Don't Worry Be Happy" if it's not played ten million times a day.
Walking On Sunshine - Katrina & The Waves
Don’t Worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin
Flashdance…What A Feeling - Irene Cara
I'm going to say a VERY early 80's song, "Funkytown" by Lipps, Inc. It just sounds super "happy." 😎
Man, I don't care if some people think it's cheesy, I will never stop loving, "Waiting for a Star to Fall." It truly does embody the best aspects of 80's positivity and optimism. What's so wrong about that? Not a dang thing!
The song is so innocent and carefree.
I don’t know if anyone replied with this, but there is awesome video of 80’s movies with this song playing. Check it out!!
it always makes me smile.
It never gets old.
I’m 48 and mostly a rocker but me and my wife play this song more than most. It takes me back like very few songs do.
53 year old redneck here. This is on my best 80’s playlist and I get mad if it doesn’t play when I hit random. Nostalgia at its best.

I annoy the crap out of my wife playing this song over and over again. It helps me with my depression.
"Waiting For A Star to Fall" sounds like the theme to a light-hearted ABC sitcom from the '80s.
Absolutely love this song! The Eighties were a really special time. Got married in 1981. Still going strong! To all, “ Peace, Love and Soul!”

It's that sax solo that really does it for me,

Great song. So underrated.
Waiting For A Star To Fall is one of the stand out hits of the eighties. Really stylish feel good pop.
Great way to say it!

One's a verb & one's a noun.

The fact they wrote I Wanna Dance With Somebody shows just how amazing they were at musicianship/songcraft
Poco / call it love is another great song that’s forgotten.
62-year-old rocker here. I love "Waiting for a Star to Fall." So sticky sweet... rock candy baby!
The freedom to do whatever we wanted to do.
Oh this is such a sweet song. Remember this in high school. It was a great feel good song.
I get the STRONG feels when I hear this song. Just a great expression of love. I was about 25 when this song came out.
Good observations Eric!
Thank you as always.
It makes me think boys used this song to woo girls.
I've always loved this band. And Damn! Did I have a mad crush on Shannon. She is gorgeous.
I love Waiting For A Star To fall! You just can’t stay down when this song is playing! Makes me smile every time!
LOL!
I actually interviewed Debbie and Tiffany on the same day! Thanks Bill
@@ProfessorofRock You played part of the Debbie interview. I'd love to see the whole thing. Tiffany was great, too!
Red Hot is a good track off the album. While successful in the UK to admit to thinking her music was good was very rare. She had a number of very good songs.
First teenager to write, record, and produce a #1 song!
I looked this song in the 80s
And I've got it on my rotation. I've never stopped loving the song.
Awesome video. I love how Waiting for a Star to Fall is getting recognition
Wow. Your description of this song is very much on spot. It is a sleeper from the 80s. Beautiful song 👍
I love this song! Another one was Mary’s Prayer. I call it Carnival music, holding your sweethearts hand, strolling through a fair at night, all the lights and laughter, playing skeeball and eating cotton candy.
Just sweet and wholesome.
Definitely one of my favorite 80's pop songs. I always loved the vibe of this song.
Thanks RC32. It's an interesting story I think...
@@ProfessorofRock Yeah!
We get some more interesting perspectives here. Cheers 🍻
"Waiting for a Star to Fall." One of my favorites! Really Enjoyed their story. Thanks! Great job.
My daughter was born when this song was a hit. It will always remind me of that special day because she is my star. Thanks for another great video.
Videos like this is why I enjoy your blog. Real life stories from and about the most talented people in the music industry. The behind the scenes stories of their triumphs and their tribulations. Thanks again for all of your hard work.
Sometimes those acrimonious collaborations can wield incredible music e.g. Fleetwood Mac.
Exactly!
Buckingham/Nicks, yep.
I LOVE the song 'Waiting for a Star to Fall'. An 80s CLASSIC.
Loved this episode. Such a great and memorable song. I appreciate hearing their story.
Love this song !!!
I'm a classic rock 70s teenager and some of these songs I've never heard.
But I still listen to your breakdown and learn .
Thanks Prof
LOVED this song. I'm so glad that these talented songwriters were successful, even if it wasn't for as long as we would have liked.
For anyone interested there is a phenomenal 2003 house/electronica song that melds the words “In My Arms Baby Yeah” from “Waiting For A Star To Fall” and the keyboard riff by Kim Carnes’ “Bette Davis Eyes”
The artist is Mylo. The song is “In My Arms”. Hope you enjoy it.
I love this song, and also Oh, Girl. It has a truly joyful sound, and the video is wonderful. I'm glad that while they're no longer life partners, they've managed to stay friends, and continue working together.
I love this song. 1988 was my favorite year for music.
Mine too!!! ♥️♥️♥️
My dad graduated in 1988
I’m almost 49, and this song is still on my playlist when I go running.
This is definitely one of those songs that instantly time machines me back to a time I was having young fun
what a wonderful story, even romantic. I always enjoyed this duo.
Thanks again, Adam. I knew *some* of the backstory here, but not nearly as much as you told us here today. Wonderful! This song still holds up so well.
Bloody brilliant track. Any songwriter would have given their eye teeth to have written this track.
Instantly transports me back to junior high . . . and still sounds fantastic.
You are truly a great storyteller! Love the videos!
One of my all-time favorite songs. Thanks for telling the rest of the story!
Thank you for this video. I completely forgot about these 2 and their hit....waiting for a star to fall. The Perfect 80's sound.
It's my guilty pleasure from the 80's.
I had the cassette single of this song and would just drive around listening to it over and over. It helped me a lot when I was down and still has and uplifting effect on me today. Absolutey love it!
80s was better than 90s. Gosh I miss those days. I couldn't get into grunge or hip hop.
I personally don’t think grunge is all that bad and love 90s hip hop, but I definitely prefer the 80s by far.
Awesome video, thank you for showcasing this amazing song!!
