Yes sis, the "rubbing" does help a whole lot! I still swear by soaking your locs for 5 - 10 minutes prior to adding shampoo because it helps to "open up" your locs. Locs are kinda like a dry sponge when they are dry so soaking them before adding shampoo helps to make the shampoo get inside to help lift out the accumalated oils and product and then rinsing until water is clear is key. I also continue to stand by the Neutrogena anti residue shampoo. You sound like you are on the right path.
Fav Shampoos 16yrs locd and counting. Nothing with SLA if I can help it ever!!! Thems the ones that cause problems. 1. Dr. Bronner's Castile liquid soap rose diluted. A little goes a long way. Easy rinse but can be a tad drying. 2. 40 Mule Borax (Yes from the detergent section in the grocery stores) when I'm not being lazy. It deep cleans without stripping and leaves my locs super duper soft. It's a powder, so it has to be mixed with warm water before using. Great for certain scalp conditions too. It is what folk in the west used before shampoo was invented back in the day. *BEWARE!!! HELLA SLIPPERY IN THE TUB. 3. Carrot Oil and Vit E Shampoo by Yadain.
VO5 Kiwi lime squeeze with lemon grass extract clarifying shampoo Is excellent in terms of getting rid of buildup. It really does the job it totally gets rid of the buildup. And it only cost a dollar. It’s the only dollar product I use on myself and I only use it if I have build up or if I have to get my hair squeaky clean with no residue.
The loc journey is definitely a JOURNEY. I am learning some of these same things that you mentioned in this video. Beautiful locs. Thanks for sharing. 💜
This is exactly the advice I need right now. I know this video is 2 years old but I am 3 years locked and started with 2 strand twist as well. Sadly I have never myself ( other than the few times I've been to the salon) clarified my hair!! I didn't realize that is something that I should have been doing. Honestly I don't do much to my hair so I haven't noticed any build up until recently. No telling how long I've had it.. I am so excited to wash my hair the right way from now on! Thank you for the advice.
Good ole apple cider vinegar, 1/3 to 2/3 water, works super for me after shampooing. Leave in for 3-5 minutes while shaving, cleaning body, brushing under nails, brushing teeth (do not rinse fluoride off teeth), then rinse ACV. Gets rid of dandruff too and I no longer have to waste $$$ on neutropenia tea tree shampoo. Yay!!!
My locs just made 3 years too build up is a huge problem for me right now. And I part my hair in 4 sections but I get lazy sometimes because it takes a lot of time and water.
I have been watching you for some time and seeing how you’ve been fighting the issue of build-up in your locs. I have seen you try a few things, but nothing that I would think would lead to so much buildup issues. I don’t really see you using a lot of product, even when you do, it never seems to get to where white stuff is oozing out of your locs as you retwist. I think you use very little on your locs when retwisting. I have a couple or so thoughts to add to your discussion of what could possibly be contributing to the buildup issues for you. I am newly loc’d. I have been locked for 16 months this journey ahd had Sisterlocks for two years prior to this traditional loc journey. I have never had the issue of build-up, except for those few locs in the back of the head that attracts lint, no matter what you do. Even that is minimal. I also do Sisterlocks and traditional locs for a few clients and none of them has had build up in their locs either, except for one I acquired because of heavy product usage. But no more since i have a less is more approach to locs. I have used a few loc butters and etc on my hair, but no more. Even still, no build up issues. What do we all have in common here, myself and those whom locs I take care of? Soft water. We have soft water where I live. My locs suds up easily when shampooing (I mostly use shampoo bars) and the rinses clear with either none or scant residue left over. I do not do anyting like wash each loc. I wash as I did when I was a loose natural. But soft water also helps to fully rinse away the shampoo. And it does not leave much debris behind. When I lived in the midwest. We had very hard water. I was a loose natural and my hair was dry and sometimes brittle after washing and even conditioning my hair. I have soft textured 3c type hair with some 4a. I struggled with moisture and even some products would buildup in my hair then. I found it was the hard water and leaving behind things like calcium and other mineral deposits on my hair. It was also making it harder for shampoo and conditioner to work properly because of the minerals it was leaving behind on my hair. Sometimes the reaction of those minerals and the products I would use in my hair would interact making what is seen in the tub and on the glass of showers which is soap scum. Now, to the meat of what I wanted to say. Maybe the issues with your locs and the build up you’re seeing is shampoo not really being able to successfully clean your locs, leaving some of the porducts behind, and the minerals from hard water reacting and attaching to the areas not being fully cleansed and causing soap scum. And soap scum can also be caused from hard water not being able to fully rinse the hair clear and clean of residues of the soap itself, the limited products, and even some oils. When I found out how hard my water was and by my living in an apartment, I purchased a hard water filter from Aquasana. It changed the whold game for my hair and my skin. Now I live in the PNW and I have not had the issues of buildup. And if something I put in my hair did mix well, I did not have any issues with ridding my hair of it. Like I’ve said, not even an issue with my clients or my daughters hair that has Sisterlocks. It makes me wonder, if this isn’t what is happening with your hair. Hmmm….
And another mention…no need for a favorite shampoo. Almost any shampoo works with soft water. So, I just concentrate on looking for ingredients I like and a particular scent. I use a clarifying type shampoo and then the next shampoo for my second wash is one that is ultra moisturizing because I do not use conditioner on my hair outside of a leave-in spray conditioner here and there. Check it out love, this may be what’s happening to you. But still keep us posted.
Lastly, I keep forgetting to say something. I do dilute any liquid shampoo I use on my hair, no matter what. Becasue even with soft water, I don’t want to use too much shampoo and have it get stuck in my locs. I can’t dilute the shampoo bars per se. I could, I have with the African Black Soap when I use it. I would cut off a piece the day or so before I would shampoo my hair and put it in a jar of distilled water and left it dissolve into a nice shampoo. Great stuff. No worries because it is already diluted.

Definitely the best way to do it! It ensures a thorough cleaning. I sometimes dilute shampoo in water and let it soak before washing as well
