1. HD 6XX is a remake of the HD 650. Not the HD 600. 2. The HD 650 came to market in 2003. 3. HD 600 is neutral. HD 650 is natural and laid back. Just stating facts.

We once met Linus; many years ago at NCIX's first outlet store's grandopening door crasher sale in Ontario. I was struggling to balance a pair of GTX 460's in one hand, while trying to figure out how to grab two Acer 120hz gaming monitors with the other. You approached me and applauded my purchase, having reviewed the hardware yourself already; we had a brief chat as the chaos of the doorcrasher continued. Anyways, I've always felt you had a good taste in value and hardware -- I think this video proves it yet again. I personally like using the Senn 373d's for my computer use, as the microphone comes in handy, but I also have the HD 650's and I think they are the best headphones you can get for at home listening. I use them for watching movies mainly. I now also have the HD 6XX -- ordered them early on in the drop sale. $298 CAD. Glad to see we still share the same eye for value and performance.

Still have my HD650 for over 7/8 years now in 2021. I liked them over a more expensive Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro (500+$). Also had the HD660s, but I dont find them necessarily any better than my HD650 in comparison. Getting the HD6xx for 200$ or less is an absolute no brainer. Really, really insane for that price even in 2021! Despite they surely run on a mobile device, if you listen on a pc, make sure you get a good DAC/AMP since they scale very well. (I had an AudioEngine D1 DAC/AMP, and for everyday use I have a Soundblaster X7 external DAC/AMP) Like Linus says as well, also they are so super comfortable, Cant go wrong with these!
Absolutely amazing review Linus! You made some points in this video and have answered some questions I've had that no other review of this product was able to deliver.
Bought a pair for $300 CDN which included shipping and am very happy with them. Excellent soundstage, warmth and detail. The lack of bass is insignificant due to the fact that they do everything else so well as well as being very comfy to wear. And with that being said.....the bass is actually quite good. Highly recommended! Thanks for posting!
To my ears these 3rd Gen Air pods are more comfortable compared to the newer Pro version with the soft gel tips. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxgl8SzyQoymMu-S3V55Dskg5QJ8xr1yCR That said, compared to the 3rd Gen, I notice these do not stay planted in the ear as well. One design issue I think, is you squeeze the stem and click it twice to advance your songs. On 3rd gen you tap the large speaker. The difference is by grabbing the stem each time, you tend to loosen the bud fit in your ear. Not always, but the bud falls out a few times while running. The old tap to change never had that problem for me. I would not have changed that tap function. That said, the newer Pro version sticks in the ear, almost airtight if you want that. I do not like that Airtight fit. So that's why I'd stay with this version as the best trade off of comfort, use, and overall feel.

I bought my pair used for 250 $. When you are looking for a used pair don't be to picky, they are a great build quality and a five year old pair isn't close to breaking. You can also save a lot if you buy some where the paint is chipping of. Don't take the paint falling of as a bad sign. The paint job on all hd 650 are shit and it is gonna fall of at some point, so it's not a sign of the headphones being mistreated. I share the pain of that pricetag but in 2020, I've dreamed of owning the HD600 or HD650 since I was a kid, but in my country the prices on audio stuff NEVER go down and there's a big markup on imports on top of that... I ended up getting my HD600 last month for $800 USD, then I hear they're like $200 in USA/Canada and it's UNREAL... at the very least I got the made in Ireland HD600s, not the new ones made in Romania, I read from a few reviews that both sound identical but one can't be sure until more expert reviews come out and with such a pricetag I wasn't going to gamble on that.
Great review. Can't wait to test these one day. My ATH M50x's served me well. Not sure what's in store for me going from closed to open back, but if the reviews are to be believed, I shouldn't be disappointed. Thanks.

I just ordered a pair of these. I spent the whole weekend deliberating between these and the HD560S. It was a tough choice but I want a more enjoyable listening experience for music and movies/media. These seem to have a nice warmer sound while delivering really good overall performance. The HD560S seem to have better soundstaging, imaging and flatter sound. That seems great for analytical listening and pinpointing other people in FPS games but I don't care about that. I want a fun sound that delivers a nice enjoyable experience.
I also ordered the HD560S just now. I need to know what they both sound like to really come to a good conclusion/decision. Might sell the pair I don't like as much, unless I have a good use case for both. The 560S look much nicer/futuristic. Also smaller and lighter. Have certain qualities that supersede the 6XX. The 6XX seems like higher quality in terms of build and sound, better in this regard. I don't like how there are 2 cables (one on each side/can). They're also larger and stick out more (doesn't matter that much but a small detail of note). There are just way too many options these days, I had such bad decision paralysis that I couldn't settle for just one of them.
I did my research on headphones last year with over 8 pairs in a pricerange from 50-160€ and ended up with the 120€ Sennheiser. ´What did it for me was not the sound, i had better ones, but the fit. As Linus said, you can wear them for days and that was the most important thing for me and that is very similar for every Sennheiser no matter the price range.
I really love when you do audio stuff like this aswell as AMPs and DACs, because i know your subjective and describe your thought so everyone can understand and relate. I wish you would do more and try take on some alternatives to some of these timeless products, which the Sennheiser 600-series are. I´d like to get your opinion on the Superlux 668B for an example :)
Got 650s with a Schiit amp/DAC a few weeks ago. Really love them! Definitely worth it. But yeah. Definitely a bit tight at first. Much better now, but still breaking in... especially when compared to the pair my buddy has.
The fact that they are that old, yet still hold that value... speaks VOLUMES, (pun intended) of the product. I still like to jam my SkillCandies though. :)
so for those getting excited, there are some unmentioned cavities to these headphones 1) you WILL need an amplifier for these cans, despite what some people are claiming in the comments you can run them off a phone, which you can, but at that point, you may as well just get a regular pair of headphones. Don't use these on an iPhone, on linuses part this was very poor advice. if you want these style of headphone for a portable device look at the 58X or the 660S if you have the budget 2) these are not portable headphones,. they have massive sound leakage meaning you will annoy everyone by wearing these when out and about. for those who don't know, open back means that he sound can leak out of both sides of the driver and everyone can hear what you're listening to 3) a DAC is highly recommended as it will mean you are getting everything out of these headphones just something to bear in mind if you plan on getting some of these
@@hurlman03 Have you tried it? I think they are alright even from a phone, if you just use them somewhere where the leakage does not bother anybody ofc. They do indeed benefit from a proper amp and maybe Dac, but they are alright with a phone, i don`t think he is wrong there.
I'm glad you put this video up late, or it would have been a lot harder for me to get in on the drop when I did. They were sold out of the 5000 of them within hours.

pieter baelde jansen Which ones? The DT880 is similar to the DT770 in terms of a fairly flat frequency response (the 770s are often used in low budget studios and are the main reason the more professional DT 1770s are around). The 990s are a bit more fun sounding. More bass, more treble, excellent for gaming.
Dont worry, they are well worth their price (still audiophile tier) . . . anything from HD600+ needs an amp to reach its full potential. HD598 is usable without amp.
I just paid 170 Euro for Sennheiser G4ME One. But still, if i were to buy the Massdrop Sennheiser i'd have to pay the 200$ + 50$ for transport + 80$ for import taxes and it wouldn't be worth it.

This video is five years old. FIVE. And yet there’s still loads of new comments. There’s still people watching this for the first time. The article/purpose of this video is still relevant. “Why?” you might ask. Well that’s because the subject, these headphones, are still great. They’re never not going to be great. Headphones, at least the traditional kind without batteries or complex circuitry, never stop sounding as good as they do, and they will never stop being as useful as they are. This can even be said of used headphones, so long as they were listened to with a modicum of care. A good pair of headphones can and should last you a lifetime under normal use, but you just don’t see products that actually do that being released any more. As a matter of fact, Linus just did a video not too long ago about how Sennheiser sold their whole headphones division. It wouldn’t be insane to assume that some part of their “demise” is due to the fact that the people that buy their headphones often never have to replace them. Fortunately, these headphones are still available from Drop, as well as most of the HD600 and 800 lineup elsewhere online. If you’re in the market for a quality open-back listening experience and you don’t want to ever replace them, this is probably the right product for you. If you want to save money, you can even wait for them to be on sale like I did. They were $179, and still under $200 after tax and shipping. Or, because these will always sound good and so will the HD600’s or 580’s or 650’s or 660’s, you can buy a pair used. Ear pads clapped out or a manky old beat up cable on some used ones you found for $50-100? Perfect. Rip those pads and the cable off, buy new ones for ~$40, and viola, an excellent listening experience is yours for years or even DECADES to come. This basic design has been available under one model name or another since the 80’s, and that’s because they just work SO WELL that they didn’t feel the need to do any major changes. And if you do buy these and don’t like them for whatever reason, return them. Or if they are used, don’t fret. Just because you didn’t like them doesn’t mean someone else won’t buy them from you and enjoy them. These will almost always have resale value (to the right people). Just a fair warning though, be prepared to buy an amp for these headphones because no, they don’t sound “just fine” plugged into any old mobile device. Something simple like a FiiO BTR3K or BTR5 or the ES100 will be perfect for mobile use if that’s what you’re after.
You can usually find Skullcandy Ink'd at like Fred Meyer or whatever. You won't get anything better than those for $5. They're actually REALLY impressive earbuds, but they only last around 6 months at best.
btw, for these If you have the means or know a guy, PLEASE try 600-series sennheisers on a good tube. They come alive in a way I can not explain, but I can recall the exact feeling from memory and its almost like another set of headphones.
That's a nice click-bait title. They may be among the top few, but no such thing as "the best". I still prefer Beyerdynamic DT990pros, though that's personal preference about the type of sound.
+Mellis Really? You mean just sound, or form factor? For me HD650 sound bit too low heavy. I also really don't like that cable goes to both earcups. DT990pro on the other hand, though maybe bit bright, sounds very natural, and are more comfortable to use because of the coiled cable.
ATH M50 will definitely be better than these at roughly half the price. You never knew how much you needed studio monitor headphones until you bought a pair of ATH m50's.
The famous two that are comparable to the HD6XX in price/performance are the AKG K7XX and its equivalent or Beyerdynamic DT880. And these legendary trio are going cheaper by the years, shaking the entry level audiophile market
bublik11 nah they tend to have a very flat response which I prefer. They're especially good for musicians and engineers looking for a pair of headphones to mix on that won't color the sound, which in my experience, sennheisers headphones do.
Not saying their higher end headphones are bad. Just different and can be disappointing if you don't realize they don't have a flat frequency response before buying.
+taiiat Sennheisers tend to be slightly bass-leaning throughout their range, although like Linus said, generally not to the extent of bleeding into and obscuring the rest of the frequency range. Pretty much the only one known to deviate from that house sound is the top-end HD800, w/c is quite a bit more expensive than the HD600 series.
I've had these headphones for 2 years now, I think? Love them. Tomorrow some upgraded pads come in the mail since these do get very dirty, but 2 years is a hell of a great start. Oh also, I travelled across the country with them twice. This second time around, the left part of the cable, stopped really working unless you twist it awkwardly until it finally did just go out. A new cable fixed the issue! These are great.

Those aren't HD650s at 1:50. Those are HD600s. The HD650 cable has the black, longer proprietary end like on the HD6XX but is terminated as a 6,35mm. It comes with a cable style 3,5mm adapter. The cable marked as HD650 at 1:50 is actually an HD600 cable. The HD600 cable's identification marks are a proprietary end with red for right and black for left and a 3,5mm termination with a little bump where the 6,35mm adapter ends. The HD600 cable is also thinner than that of the HD650.

dont worry mate, when the drop is so well-sought after by the masses they tend to repeat the drop. Just gotta wait for it... not a short wait though, be patient.
HD 600 is known for having a neutral sound, which is the opposite of what you've said. It's still considered by the majority to be the industry standard for mixing cans due to their flat EQ.
I just came up with a genious idea, why dont Headphone companies make removable and attachable headphone cups, so you can have open back and close back headphone whenever you want?
It's not an ingenious idea, because almost all of the cost is in the cups so it makes no sense to offer removable cups. Just buy closed-back headphones.
because the same amount of bass in closed back wont work for open back. Its going to be a compromise and we dont want compromise. we want the best. thats the reason people dont care for swapable iem barrel. its stupid.
I had some Sennheiser headphones a while back. They are OK if you live alone or you have a separate computer room but if your PC room is connected, in any way, with a room occupied by people who are talking or watching TV then steer very clear of these. In the end I went with some Sony MDR-1A's instead. Build quality is good, they are closed - so they won't annoy anyone around you. They have a frequency response range of 4hz -192Khz when coupled with a HD audio output (front panel headphone jacks are out of the question). The cable running from your MB to that front audio output is extremely low quality and renders the perfectly balanced, supplied OFC cable pointless. They should be connected directly to the rear output or to a headphone amp via optical audio out. People might say that the frequencies are out of the range of human hearing capabilities, which is true. However, they are very noticeably different when playing audio from a DVD, Bluray, or FLAC file (originally created in FLAC, not converted from CD to FLAC) through your PC with your audio settings set to 24bit 192000hz. The bass is tight and evenly balanced and the high end is sharp and clear. Of course it's personal preference in the end but I found I didn't need to mess around with an equalizer with these, they are so well balanced. Not uncomfortable during extended use but the downside is that the ear covers wear out pretty quickly. I've had mine for about a year now and the edges are starting to fray a little so I'll probably replace them on the weekend. Another downside is you only get a 1.2m cable. This is deliberate as it provides less resistance and thus less signal loss but you can buy a 3m replacement cable (not one of those cheap 10 - 20$ ones) for around 80$.
@@r00kiet80 Then you probably hate a strong base. But not every model is tuned like this and they are on point and popular for studios. But that is just a thing of preference and can be changed. Which version and model did you choose?
I can relate, I picked the HD 598s last Black Friday for a little over $100 CAD and even thought the HD 6XX are a steal at $200, it doesn't make sense to upgrade
Just got mine. I'm already spoiled after falling into the IEM rabbit hole, so I just think they're good. Nothing more than that. Would still recommend them to anyone!
basically it's dropping the price in exchange for more people buying them. You are buying large quantities of items so the price is cheaper. Mass drop simulates it but instead of you buying 300 of them you just buy 1 and 300 other people buy them to make it cheaper.
it's a internet site where people suggest what to buy and Massdrop will contact the producers that's products get most votes and they make better deal for consumers, but if you live outside of USA and Canada usually the shipping costs will cancel the lower price, so outside of the new world Massdrop is useless

1. HD 6XX is a remake of the HD 650. Not the HD 600.
2. The HD 650 came to market in 2003.
3. HD 600 is neutral. HD 650 is natural and laid back.
Just stating facts.
Also you recommended driving these from a smartphone? NO!! Big nono!!
You need a powerful headphone amplifier!

The HD650 is fine driving from a computer or even a phone. Sure you are not using the full capacity and should probably not expect super high volume but it's more than enough!

Are they good for gaming tho? Or just for music?

Bought a pair for $300 CDN which included shipping and am very happy with them. Excellent soundstage, warmth and detail. The lack of bass is insignificant due to the fact that they do everything else so well as well as being very comfy to wear. And with that being said.....the bass is actually quite good. Which amp, which DAC?
Hd650 one of the best headphones ever made. I have headphones that cost $2,000+ and still use my hd650 daily.
Why???
@@JoonKimDMDbecause they're just more enjoyable. I just checked, your right...I can only hope that this drop comes back soon * goes to cry in corner *
Sennheiser made one million dollars in three hours with this. I think they are coming back.
Valdemar Jørgensen I hope your right, Iv'e wanted a pair of hd 650's but never had the $350 buck's I needed to buy a good used pair.
Just paint them yourself, it's gonna be better anyways since they are butt ugly (that's what I did).
When that is said, waiting for these to return is also a good option, and is what I myself would do.
Bought the 650 when it was still like $700. No regrets, it’s the only thing I’ve used basically daily for the last decade.

Should be a nice upgrade from my PC37X either way. I'm a big Sennheiser fan.
I love that shot of colton and the meme text fucking perfect
I did my research on headphones last year with over 8 pairs in a pricerange from 50-160€ and ended up with the 120€ Sennheiser. ´What did it for me was not the sound, i had better ones, but the fit. As Linus said, you can wear them for days and that was the most important thing for me and that is very similar for every Sennheiser no matter the price range.
Was looking back at this for a worthy upgrade but man I started dying when Colton dropped those headphones
so for those getting excited, there are some unmentioned cavities to these headphones
1) you WILL need an amplifier for these cans, despite what some people are claiming in the comments you can run them off a phone, which you can, but at that point, you may as well just get a regular pair of headphones. Don't use these on an iPhone, on linuses part this was very poor advice. if you want these style of headphone for a portable device look at the 58X or the 660S if you have the budget
2) these are not portable headphones,. they have massive sound leakage meaning you will annoy everyone by wearing these when out and about. for those who don't know, open back means that he sound can leak out of both sides of the driver and everyone can hear what you're listening to
3) a DAC is highly recommended as it will mean you are getting everything out of these headphones
just something to bear in mind if you plan on getting some of these
Needed to be said. I couldn't believe Linus said you could run a 300 Ohm headphone from an iPhone.
@@hurlman03 Have you tried it? I think they are alright even from a phone, if you just use them somewhere where the leakage does not bother anybody ofc. They do indeed benefit from a proper amp and maybe Dac, but they are alright with a phone, i don`t think he is wrong there.

pieter baelde jansen Which ones? The DT880 is similar to the DT770 in terms of a fairly flat frequency response (the 770s are often used in low budget studios and are the main reason the more professional DT 1770s are around). The 990s are a bit more fun sounding. More bass, more treble, excellent for gaming.

good to know you are reviewing an item that sold out before you published the video! good job guys!! :)
As a recent discoverer of dope headphones, we need more headphone reviews!

That's a nice click-bait title. They may be among the top few, but no such thing as "the best". I still prefer Beyerdynamic DT990pros, though that's personal preference about the type of sound.

MGL personal preference yes. Personally I hate the DT990.
+Mellis Really? You mean just sound, or form factor? For me HD650 sound bit too low heavy. I also really don't like that cable goes to both earcups. DT990pro on the other hand, though maybe bit bright, sounds very natural, and are more comfortable to use because of the coiled cable.

AT m50x compared to this? (worth switching to?)
why not both? its always nice to have a good set of close back headphones at lower impedance.
They are completely different types of headphones. You will have to wear it to see if you like its sound signature (or any good open headphone).
An open headphone can't replaced a closed. they have different purpose. Open usually sound better but at cost of environment noise.
Still prefer Beyerdynamic headphones to anything I've ever tried from Sennheiser
bass head?
bublik11 nah they tend to have a very flat response which I prefer. They're especially good for musicians and engineers looking for a pair of headphones to mix on that won't color the sound, which in my experience, sennheisers headphones do.
Not saying their higher end headphones are bad. Just different and can be disappointing if you don't realize they don't have a flat frequency response before buying.

every professional Audio Company has neutral Monitors available.
if that's what you're looking for, everybody has it.
These are great.
is it the zmf pads
@@user-yk1cw8im4h Yea I got the zmf suede perforated. Honestly dont feel experienced in audio enough to tell a massive difference or anything, but I enjoy it. Definitely comfortable and now clean lol
@@gamist8166 the suede is supposed to sound very similar to the stock pads, which is why I want to get them to replace my flattened stock pads. But they are so expensive…
That's not a shot of Linus that's colton

finally, One dencapods comment
Who's here because of the sale this year?
wesler218 me lmao. I bought them...
@@victorolofsson2792 damnnn. Come back here when they come in and tell me how they are. Still deciding..
wesler218 will do mate
About two days

had my bloody mouse for over 3 years and still kickin without any problems.
finally Bloody. Excited to see a cheap manufacturer easily available in my country and most of Asia, that otherwise have no choice but Logitech and Razer, getting the possibility of a review.
Please review them. Pls
"Angry Porn!" Killed me!! 😂😂
FFS ARE THESE SOLD OUT ALREADY?????????????????????? 😩😩😩😩😩😩
They sold out of the drop within hours...I watched HardwareCanucks review of the HD 6xx earlier in the week and they were already gone lol.
fuuuuck 😩😩😩5000 lucky mofos. Thanks dude
Yeah, it's absolutely silly how fast they sold out.
dont worry mate, when the drop is so well-sought after by the masses they tend to repeat the drop.
Just gotta wait for it... not a short wait though, be patient.
lenyek penyek Sennheiser said this was a one time thing to get their brand out there :(
0:52 Anakata confirmed
They’re gorgeous. I can’t wait for mine to arrive
HD 600 is known for having a neutral sound, which is the opposite of what you've said. It's still considered by the majority to be the industry standard for mixing cans due to their flat EQ.
Didn't knew Linus had HuDuh 6-hunredo's by Senn review
Haha you beat me to the dankpods reference
Ye thanks for releasing it too late :) I was able to get into the drop. Otherwise all the locusts here would have snatched every single one.
I just came up with a genious idea, why dont Headphone companies make removable and attachable headphone cups, so you can have open back and close back headphone whenever you want?
It's not an ingenious idea, because almost all of the cost is in the cups so it makes no sense to offer removable cups. Just buy closed-back headphones.
www.amazon.com/HIFIMAN-Closed-Foldable-Dynamic-Headphones/dp/B01DZQT9UM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1473740946&sr=8-3&keywords=hifiman+edition&linkCode=sl1&tag=zeos-20&linkId=9173386b09dafdd0e11d65f338a3df23
because it would totally change the sound signature.
because the same amount of bass in closed back wont work for open back.
The 6xx have finally been released in Australia. I've got a pair arriving tomorrow! I'm hoping they are an improvement over my DT990s
Tell me if they are pls
@@sloppyjoe2974 in my opinion they are better. Smaller soundstage but they pack a bigger punch
Unbelivable value... Ifff you live in the US. :(
EU Massdrop? Pleaseee?? Have to pay like 50 percent more because I'm from EU.. QQ.
Or take a look at the beyerdynamic dt770 pro or the other products of the line
Beyerdynamic sound terrible imo if u like that sound idk what ur on gave em back the day i got them
@@r00kiet80 strange comment i would expect from a user of beats
@@toxicparasite3031 no i use the hd58x since a good year stay away from beyerdynamics they're terrible tuned maybe good for gaming but bad in general
@@r00kiet80 Then you probably hate a strong base. But not every model is tuned like this and they are on point and popular for studios. But that is just a thing of preference and can be changed. Which version and model did you choose?
I already have the HD 598. So these are not much of an upgrade.
Bardock The Legendary Warrior actually 598 to 600 series is a massive jump
They are a huge upgrade, actually. Take it from a 598 owner.
HunterAMG How so? can you explain to me why?
Dylan Thomas how so?
I can relate, I picked the HD 598s last Black Friday for a little over $100 CAD and even thought the HD 6XX are a steal at $200, it doesn't make sense to upgrade
i've had the HD650s for years, absolutely love them
Just got mine. I'm already spoiled after falling into the IEM rabbit hole, so I just think they're good. Nothing more than that. Would still recommend them to anyone!
how are they for gaming?
@@baaprebaap3130 not very bassy but they're comfy and don't get too warm. No mic, of course.
Someone please explain to me what is Massdrop?
basically it's dropping the price in exchange for more people buying them.
"New World"... cute.
Well it's one way to call Americas, you know Europe is the old world
British might call them colonies
audiophiles be like: but won't the color of the heafphone change the frequency that it vibrates thus changing sound? XD
"One more platinum plaque"
That was a dr dre reference. :-)
Bought my 650s must be going on 8 years ago. I wasn't even paying a lot of attention, but turned out they're amazing, and really stood up to all the abuse
Last time they went on sale, I decided against buying them, which I regretted. However, on you latest video, the the ad was for these headphones being available again. Couldn't have clicked faster on the buy button. Granted, I'll still use my main audio system about 95% of time, but it's been about three years now that I have wanted these headphones. Can hardly wait for them to arrive.
