  • This is slideshow of historic Baton Rouge photos, Links are included at the end to most of these images. The maps are highly detailed when enlarged, I can upload them separataly if requested
A few notes from my research:
Fla Blvd was origainally called Shell Road before it was paved, The shells made it easy for horse drawn carriages to travel on.
Leaving Downtown BR proper North Blvd changed names Jefferson Hwy, (later this section changed Names again to Goverment) it ended at S Acadian. Acadian was then was a short section of Clay Cut. The 2 road maps (one drawn in the late 1800's & one in 1920) are hard overlay
Clay Cut was called clay gut road, when it was discovered it was a path that wild oxen traveled on. Looking at the old hand drawn map lower Clay cut changed names to Hope Villa road at the intersection of Denham Springs Rd (now Old Hammond hwy). Denham Springs Rd was origainally named Bentons Ferry Rd.
Before it was named Perkins Rd it intersected Starring South of the LR&N RR tracks then went to the mouth of Bayou Manchac on the Miss river, Later Perkins was extended to Kleinpeter Ville at Highland Rd crossing. Perkins Rd crossed the RR tracks 5 times before heading S into Ascenion Parish

Born in 1946 at old OLOL. Grew up with 6 other siblings in Spanish Town neighborhood On Boyd Ave (now Spanish Town Rd). We walked everywhere - to St. Joseph Parochial, old Catholic High, downtown, all the theaters, St. Joseph Church of course, Capitol grounds, Victory Park. I could go on & on. Enjoyed these old photos and vividly recall all.

I grew up on Ingleside back when the streets were lined with ditches and the oak trees were small. I remember my parents told me they bought our house new for $3,500.

5:42 - That sure brought back some instant memories. We had some great family nights out going to drive-ins and eating in the car, with trays on all four windows, and three kids in the back seat fighting over who got a window seat.
I well remember the drive in theaters, too. Saturday night family outings. We'd go a couple of hours early, get a prime spot, and break out a picnic. They had picnic areas, and playgrounds for kids, and when I was old enough, I got to sit on top of the car with my own bucket of popcorn. LOL They were some great times!
Fascinating look into the past. Some great nostalgia and history here.

    • @007bondjb
      @007bondjb  8 лет назад

+Anonymoose Here the food drive-in's with window service were replaced by pizza parlors that served beer.
We needed to those PIC mosquito repellent coils during the summer here. You remember them?

WOW, what a trip down memory lane! I was born in 1959 and remember about 85% of the places you shared. Some are still around. The most recent one that was demolished was the old Broadmoor Theatre and the old I.H. Rubensteins store. I actually shed a couple tears watching the old theatre being torn down. Spent some fun times there as a kid. Thanks for sharing your pics!

Great stuff, but some Baton Rouge icons are missing. Maybe you didn't possess them... Fun Fair Park. Wilson's department store. Piccadilly at Bon Marche shopping center. DH Holmes. Baton Rouge High School. Mike the Tiger's old cage. Hart Theater. Old State Capitol. Memorial Stadium. Top of the Tower restaurant. Purvis Jock Shop. Phil's Oyster Bar. Bonanza restaurant. Werlien's Music store. Bon Marche Theater. Istrouma High School. Tick Tock Shoes. Gibson department store. Howard's department store. Ralph and Kacoos at north Airline Highway. Circle Bowl. Pasquale's Pizza. IH Rubinsteins. Luckett studios. St. Thomas More original Catholic Church. Robert E. Lee Theater. Our Lady of the Lake Hospital downtown. K&B stores. The Athletic Shop. WLCS AM radio. Godchaux's downtown. I'm sure I'm missing more. Great memories.

Ever heard of - Senarper Salient Secret - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? JB, Great Stuff!! So many memories, '73 born in the old Woman's Hospital, by Price Leblanc's (and come get yer sausage, Daahliin!!). Recall watching so many movies at Bon Marche very, video games, and the Woolworth in the '''back corner" of Bon Marche Mall w/ Oh, goodness... Orange Julius!
If I can tell on my family; I was the last of us "kids" in our family from the boomer generation. My grandfather was Jack Sabin, owned The GoalPost just outside the Chimes/ Highland gate across from The Varsity. Wasn't there also something like "Round the Clock" that you'd call your order from the table? Lol...
If you didn't geaux to LSU FROM 50 TO 59 and ate at the Goalpost (p.s. if anyone has pics of it from the inside; love to see!
Jack opened Sabin's Fine Foods with his sequin vests, hand made by Miss Betty, as some of you might know, there on the Airline, right near Old Hammond - while I got to eat there, Mr. Joey Distafano had bought it when grapaw Jack passed on '68. Ms. Fanny, Joey's mom, had The Village across from Cortana, which I think was an old monastery?!
Funny side note, where the toy store is/was with the single engine Airplane on top like it is about to cube; Capital Heights and Jefferson Hwy, near Gov't - the Ole Joe D's sammiches: Giamanco's wasn't far - that sensation salad... wow!
One last one... what was the original building next to the Broadmoor theater? I Recall a Dept store, Ardain's? It had all that black wrought-iron, and white washed brick.
J.B. you are the MAN! SUCH A GREAT JOB, SIR!!
