    The most I would spend on a seiko is what I can afford. If I could afford 6k on a watch and it was between a 6k omega and 6k grand seiko well it's clear choice for me. Grand seiko spring drive! But, 3 kids, college , and the love of my family... I chose orient and seiko 5s. 🤪

    I think this just speaks to Seiko's ability to be the everyman's watch. Rather than adopting the tactics of Rolex and the big 3 by driving prices sky-high through underhanded restrictions on supply, they've make watches that are aesthetically pleasing at all price brackets. This lets watch-lovers at all price brackets to enjoy their products despite how deep or shallow their pockets are. Their products, even at the lower end are also well built and reliable (my baby turtle keeps time as good as my submariner or speedmaster). Then they also offer innovative design and amazing finishing, if you're able to afford that premium (without the ridiculous wait queues or buy quotas before you're added to a wait list).

    I have been a Seiko fan for a long time. I fell in love with the LX series, and got the limited edition snr041 last year, which has the brown face and bezel. I love the idea of a "sleeper" watch. Most people don't know. But when someone does, it's a mutual appreciation of the craft. Teddy, I appreciate the explanation on the differences. My watch knowledge is quite small because I'm now learning more about them. However, I've been a musician for over 30 years and have had similar experiences when comparing the differences on a $600 guitar vs a $6000. The manufacturing, attention to detail, type of material used, place of fabrication and perhaps even additional R&D comes into play with instruments. It's interesting to see that both industries have similar traits. Cheers!

    I was sceptical regards to the LX initially and was wondering why the hell would I be paying so much more for a dive watch when I don't even dive. Heck, I don't even do water sports. But when I sat down in front of my regular watch dealer, expressing my severe doubts, all he said was "Don't judge. Trust me. Put it on your wrist first". The rest was history....I wear it regularly now with such enjoyment and pleasure, despite having a rather small asian wrist. The beauty and wonders of the watch I will not describe as you have already done so with great finesse and flair. But this entire experience reminded me once again of the simple and yet forgettable theory "what you pay is what you get". I love your contents and have great respect for what you're doing. Speaking as a Seiko fan - Seiko just can't get away from their chapter ring alignment issues. In my experience Citizen is always perfect in this area at literally all price points from $50 to $5000, but for some reason internet watch nerds just can't get over Seiko as some demagogue "purist" brand. Odd stuff, but what do we expect from the hive mind?
    To add to the conversation Teddy brings up at the end of the video - No, I absolutely do not think Seiko deserve to move up-market. Frankly any chapter ring alignment and other baffling quality issues for years prior to the up-market movement were not even acceptable at their lower price point. Great watches and tons of potential let down by subpar manufacturing processes and embarrassingly low QC standards.

      It's more the fact that the aforementioned brands are overpriced. The amount of markup is insane, in some cases it's 15x. You don't see that kind of markup in any other industry and it's done in the name of heritage and status. It's why you'll find micro brands, boutique brands and the lesser known, undercutting the big names significantly. This includes Seiko, although their prices are a bit steep considering the movements inside. The 4R isn't great and they're charging more than their old 6R models. Their reasoning is that they're trying to be more upmarket. We'll see how that turns out for them.

    Very nice video and you make all the right points, Teddy, imho. I own the Seiko LX Landmaster, a gmt watch with a compass style bezel. I paid less than $6K, as I think most do. I love it but it is big, and uses a very, very similar (perhaps the same) case as the LX shown above. It is very comfortable for a big watch but, yes, it is not for everyone. It is a big hunk of shiny metal, no doubt. I think it was worth what I paid considering what other watches are out there. The Spring Drive movement adds somewhere between $2-3K over a standard COSC automatic movement. Its smoothness and accuracy are a wonder to behold. Compared to a $6K Breitling or IWC with an ETA, there is no comparison. It is simply horologically a compelling movement that keeps spectacular time, as you say. So, that leaves about $3K for the case, bracelet, dial and everything else. Nothing on the market comes close, imho. Tudor is also compelling but just not in the same league, although they are great. I spent a shade under $5K for mine, so what else exists in this price point to rival the Spring Drive LX's? Omega Aqua Terra's are great but I think they are less watch, imho. I admit it is a lot to spend on a Seiko, no argument there, but branding just doesn't mean that much to me. And having a quality Seiko that can rival luxury Swiss timepieces but fly under the radar a bit is a plus, too.

    • @JEROMEGELB
      @JEROMEGELB 2 года назад

      One can't overstate the aspect of "flying under the radar", given the massive increase in Rolex aggravated robberies in multiple countries. Watch theft gangs are using spotters in the legal and banking/finance centres of major cities, who look out for high end Swiss watches revealed when owners are in bars or restaurants or when getting out of cars and taxis. The spotters call the intercept team waiting in a vehicle in the area, who drive up behind the victim, exit the vehicle and overwhelm the victim and steal the watch in seconds and then drive off. Unfortunately, resistance has led to murder or serious injury with stabbings and shootings. A less easily recognisable luxury watch makes a lot of sense and many high end watch owners are leaving their watches in their bank's safety deposit boxes, especially when on vacation. I saw a TV piece on this and many Rolex, Omega, AP & Patek owners interviewed have taken to wearing "ordinary" watches, except if attending private functions.

      I own both the SBGA229 and SNR029. This statement is not accurate. Sure, both retail for 6 grand, but both are very different beasts. Only have the price and dive watch style in common. The SBGA229 is a very beautiful watch. The handset is huge, heavy, and fun to look at. The indices that are applied, machined, have the best applied lume plots on any Seiko WITH a thin white border surrounding look like little pearls. The finishing is museum quality.
      The SNR029 is Seiko's flagship diver. It is overbuilt, robust, and has a better bracelet AND better end link mounting than the GS. The movement is the same, though less decorated. It is the MM300 on steroids. It has the absolute best bezel on any Seiko I have ever handled, and I've owned just about every Seiko diver at some point in my life. Has same zaratsu finishing as GS, though in less amounts.
      The GS is a very elegant diver, however it will not look as nice over time as the SNR will. I believe this is because the dial is so gorgeous, but the wear over years will not match the dial over time. The bezel finishing is very fragile.
      IMO the SNR price comes from the over-engineered robustness of the case and bracelet and the upgraded titanium.
      The SNR would look out of place with a GS on the dial and a lion on the caseback.
      Two very different beasts. Sorry for the rant!

      Why is that what Seiko should be about? Because you are used to seeing their lower-end affordable lines at the mall? Its not like they aren't a pioneering, field-leading company that makes the most accurate non-radio syncing watches and have beaten the Swiss at the COSC game many years over.

    • @bingoberra18
