Charlie Tickner was at Squaw Valley's Annual Skating competition in 1979 signing autographs in bleachers for no name aspiring competitors of the Central California region. It's so nice to go back and really appreciate the greatness of his skating. One of the greatest of all times.

Back then and up to around 89 or 90, the ISU actually identified the triple toe loop and triple toe walley as completely separate jumps. So it was not unusual to see skaters doing multiple triple toe of various types. Kurt Browning did 3 (I think) at least in either his 89 or 90 world title win when he tripled a quad toe.

IIRC, the ambiguities around this issue was tightened after the 1984 season. Ahead of the 1985 season, ISU formally issued a statement that toe loops/“cherries” and toe walleys were to be considered identical jumps.
Judges were told to simply ignore them after 2x but not penalize them, which may explain the Kurt Browning situation-where he tripled his 4T and performed two other 3T and still won.

even then dick had a little trouble identifying jumps. before the rule, charlie did 4 triple toe loops in this program.
he was one of the best skaters ever! love his romantic style and total lack of hesitation on his tricks.

No he wasn't slow and one can not really determine speed on video. A walley jump takes off from the back inside edge. A "toe" walley does too. The loop takes off of a back outside edge a toe loop does too. Search engines people,

@funindc i'm from that era in skating and used to perform the toe loops from outside edge and the toe walleys from inside edge so i know what you mean, but at @2:01 dick says 'nice triple salchow' when charlie had done a toe walley. just sayin'. happy holidays:)

So the toe loop and toe walley ARE two different jumps.

Beautiful jumper - the delayed axels sublime, but his spins and artistry were weak and no comparison to Cousins. He had worked hard to unlevel his artistry here though. He was just known as a serial jumper coming into this. He earned the silver.

Rubbish! He had his own style and it was NOT weak!!
