    Good video. Just reiterating this as some others have mentioned: correction at 10:35,
    x^2 = a^2 is
    x = ± a

    Just noticed that in the last part about the asymptote. You put
    x^2= a^2
    x=+- sqrt a
    I think it should be x=+- a or x=+- sqrt a^2

    I literally love you right now. Hyperbolas have been an issue for me and now that I am tutoring in math this is amazingly helpful. Now I can actually help people. You're an excellent teacher.

    Another way to memorize the formula is to always make sure u get the form (x^2/a^2) - (y^2/b^2) = 1 (or -1), this by multiplying with -1 on both sides if u have a negative x and positive y. So you know if the equation equals 1, the graph opens up to the sides, and if it equals -1, it opens up, up and down. piece a cake.

    I have a few questions,
    1. How come when you multiply both sides by -bx, you get b^2/a^2 x^2
    2. What does b^2/a^2 x^2 mean?
    3. And finally, you can square a negative number, -3^2=9, so why can't you do that with a or b? It would just be be x^2=-a^2 or -b^2, solve for a or b, square it, and then find the square root of that number, right?

    • @karanbains1234
      @karanbains1234 9 лет назад

      The square roots of negative numbers do not practically exist but they are assumed as imaginary numbers. Eg. Square root of -1 is iorta

    • @OfficialChaositis
      @OfficialChaositis 9 лет назад

      Karan Bains The square roots don't exist, but the squares do. I.E. -3^2=9

    What is "b"? well, "a" is the distance between center and the vertices, "c" is the distance between center and foci. But how do we visualize the distance of "b"?

    🤔🤔🤔 If x and y both = 0, then
    x^2/a^2 + y^2/b^2 is not equal to 1.
    Then the formula proofs to be wrong.

  • @fozy9050

    What if a^2 and b^2 are equal in hyperbola. What could be its eccentricty? :) and what it is called?

    • @sampathbalivada-personal
      @sampathbalivada-personal 8 лет назад

      The eccentricity of a hyperbola if a and b are equal is √ 2. So basically its value is 1.414 making it greater than 1 and it is still a hyperbola.

    Yeah, BEDMAS. Brackets come first and therefore the sqrt(9-4) calculates to sqrt(5). If you don't want that, then you'll need to seperate sqrt(9) and sqrt(4) like so;
    sqrt(9) - sqrt(4).
