  • Live footage of the Loch Lomond outdoor concert of 1991. From the Wheel In Motion DVD.
    ------------
By yon bonnie banks, by yon bonnie braes
Where the sun shines on Loch Lomond
Where me and my true love spent many days
On the banks of Loch Lomond
'Twas there we parted in yon shady glen
On the steep sides of Ben Lomond
Where the broken heart knows no second spring
Resigned we must be while we're parting
You'll take the high road and
I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland before you
Where me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond
    Ho, ho mo leannan
    Ho, mo leannan bhoidheach
You'll take the high road and
I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland before you
Where me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond

My Scottish ancestors came 2 centuries ago & I feel my Scottishness as strongly as if I had been born there! I'm pure Scottish on my mom's side & only my Scots ancestors remembered where they came from & handed it down. I've got pix of my great great grandparents, my cousins play in Highland Games, we've traced our family back to medieval Scotland. My dad's (Cornish,English&Welsh) folks never handed anything down God bless Bonnie Scotland!!!

I am Scottish but now living in Spain and my daughter Marie and her partner David came over for a wee visit this week, sadly the weather was a wee bit chilly but we all had a good time, David brought me a bottle of 12 year old single malt Loch Lomond Whisky and I am sipping it right now and listening one of the best bands ever, RUNRIG, what a song, every time I hear it my heart just burst with pride, their music is incredible. And I have to say the tears are flowing freely, I am having a wee Scottish night on RUclips so my eyes will be pretty red by the time I go to bed.

This song always get's me so emotional.
I was born in England, but my whole mothers side is from South Uist in the outer Hebrides.
And every time we had a wedding, family reunion, gathering this song was always played.
It's such a beautiful song, and Runrigs rendition truly is brilliant.
You definitely know your Scottish when this song puts a spell on you.

+Tar Man This is the song that introduced me to Runrig and it is still one of my favorites. I don't give a rat's ass about the politics. I also hate when people with political agenda's take great songs and use them to fit their needs. Example is how the IRA took Danny Boy and added a IMO war mongering verse to it and made it their anthem.

I'm an American with 100% Scotch-Irish-English blood. This song moved my little soul at age 5, as did everything from the British Isles. I didn't know exactly where my roots ran, but my DNA confirmed it. This stuff is embedded in our DNA, ..my entire life I've longed to see my homeland. I'm 62 now, and this blessed COVID made me cancel my trip last year. I pray God allows me to remain on this earth long enough to walk the moors of Ireland, dip my feet in the beautiful lochs of Scotland & to see the beauty of the Cliffs of Dover. Tears flow down my face as I imagine touching down in Britian...my sister said she feels like she is HOME every time she lands there. If only I could spend out the rest of my days where my ancestors called home! 🙏 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧🇮🇪

What is it about this band of wonderful humans that gripped me from the first time I ever heard them? It isn't just the energy that courses through them to me in songs like this. Some of their songs are quiet, peaceful, tranquil. I think it's a feeling that their hearts and souls are fully involved in the music they give to us...so much so that my heart feels ready to explode when I hear them...my brain tingles, happy tears come to my eyes and I just have to smile.

Aye lads and lasses come and run
To the sound of the highland pipe and drum
Bring your old and bring your bairn
Let them tell and let them learn
    We are Scots
    And then there are t'others
Those who would be as we are
Those from close and those from afar
A dram for ye memories my beloved Da
Both you and my Uncle Tam
Gone from us now but strangely not
    From Shetland to Skye
    To rugged Inverness
    To all from Bonny Scotland
    Goodnight and God Bless!

I went to Murrayfield in 2005 to watch Scotland play the All Blacks. New Zealand won and later, much later that evening I found myself arm in arm with the All Blacks in the "Three Sisters" in Edinburgh dancing to this. Nice to see the lads getting the beers in on tour and celebrating their victory to this excellent song.

I had the great good fortune to be there, they sang that song at the end just as the sun set over the loch,it was awesome. It was the summer solstice,on that day,way back, the locals walked with drums beating to the lochside, facing the sunset,on midsummer the sun sets precisely between two of the mountain peaks. That song still makes my arm hair stand...& reminds me of one of the friends I was there with, who departed too soon,Thanks for the upload.

Runrig is one of my favourite bands and in searching for their rendition of Loch Lomond, I found your post. I'm so sorry for your loss, James; I lost my father in 2000 and I miss him terribly, still.
May you find comfort in the music and nature that your dad so loved.
    Blessings from across The Pond

This song gives me such a great feeling, I love it so much! 🥰Ahhh, shit, I'm getting emotional, lmao.
Runrig is a great band, so sad they broke up before I had the opportunity to see them live.

The end to a massive moment in Runrig's history! I wish I had been old enough to go! I was 2 and a half at the time haha.
To posters below, I am not Scottish, but I am still proud to be a Runrig fan, and I love Scotland. You don't have to be Scottish to be proud of somewhere!

My dad was at this concert before I was born. I've only heard it once on the radio ever. And that one time was when me and him were in the car, it was I think the only time I've ever seen him break down and cry. I don't live in Scotland anymore but by god, when I listen to this I'm back there with him, on they long summer days, on the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.
