Thank you for liking the little smocked dress. Yes I may video the whole thing being made sometime. I started my channel over lockdown when my classes stopped. Now I’m back to teaching I’m finding it hard to find time but I will be back.
Hello love, Can you make a video on a litte girls - full dress, step by step. Please 🙏.... it will help me a lot. I thank you so much from saving money, time and Space from buying a smocking machine. I love alllll you details . I'm so glad I found you. ❤️ Much love.
Ah thank you for your kind words. It’s something I’ve been asked for many times since I did that machine smocked little dress. I’m still thinking about it. The reason I’m still thinking about it is because I will have to make 3 videos to make whole dress as it’s quite involved. I will defo consider it further. Xx
Hi Sally! The sleeves are smocked in the same way but with just 5 rows of gathering. Like you pulled gathering up to match the yoke width, pull sleeve gathering same size as sleeve band. Hope that helps.
You are such an amazing teacher, I'm very new to dressmaking and have really struggled to find tutorials that are simple to follow. thank you! I'd love to come to one of your classes, where are you based?
That’s so kind of you. I still haven’t returned to my classes since lockdown. I will make a decision soon what I’m going to do, was just waiting to see how everything panned out. It’s a worry keeping everyone safe. I’m in West Sussex UK. Xx
Hi Julie! This video was made originally just for my students during lockdown as some wanted to know how to do machine smocking. It was never made with the intention of making the whole dress as I thought once the yoke and smocking piece was done peeps would just follow the pattern instructions. Maybe I could do one but it would need to be done in 2 parts as it would be quite lengthy. Can I help you in any way? What piece are you particularly stuck on? I showed 2 patterns, which one are you using? I’ve also been asked to make a video on how to adapt a pattern for machine smocking. I’m so thrilled you were able to follow my tutorial to make some machine smocking. X
Thankyou felicity for replying.... I'm almost done it... just taking my time so not to rush but I shall keep an eye on your site has found you so easy to follow.... thankyou once again
Hello. Love the video and have used it. However, when fixing the smocking to a gathered skirt, the seam is quite bulky. Can you suggest how to reduce this bulk . Thank you.
Hi MsSparkleyspice, I’m sure I could help you but I’m not sure I understand. There isn’t a seam that joins the smocking to skirt as smocking and skirt is all one piece. There is only a seam that joins smocking to yoke and that shouldn’t be too bulky. The smocking forms gathers for skirt. Please contact me again if I’ve misunderstood and I will try to help further. X
Thank you soo much for your comments. I’m not sure if I want to video making the whole thing. My intention was just to show how to do the machine smocking. It would probably have to stretch over 3 videos. I will think about it. X
What thread do you use for the embroidery I’ve tried double thread my machine didn’t like it, single doesn’t show up too much. I live in New Zealand but used to live in Roffey how wonderful to be learning from someone who lives in West Sussex!
Hi Norma! I had to look up Roffey as it sounds like it should be in Scotland and I was surprised to see it is near Horsham in West Sussex. So thread I use is Guttermann polyester thread, nothing special and defo not embroidery thread, the machine won’t be happy with that at all. Yes you are right, it doesn’t show up much but this isn’t like the hand embroidered real version. It does have an impact though and you can defo see a very pretty enhancement. My advice would be to use a thread as bright and dark as you can that compliments your fabric, and for gathering use the absolute best match to your fabric. Hope this helps. X
Sorry if this is a silly question, is shirring with elastic different to smocking? Does your method of smocking use ordinary thread as opposed to shirring elastic I’m a little confused! As you may realise I’m completely new to smocking but I’m eager to learn as I’ve become a new grandma and would like to enhance a little dress with smocking ! Thank you for the tutorial. Your lesson is very easy to follow. 😊 Kind Regards Bev
Hi Bev, Yes shirring with elastic is called just that shirring! My method is used just with thread, I use Guttermanns polyester thread. My method of smocking is a very quick method and not the traditional hand embroidered smocking. There’s room for all methods though. Hope you give it a go, it’s very satisfying when you see what you can achieve very quickly. Xx
@@felicityduke-sewing6623 ah thank you so much for replying so promptly. I really enjoyed your tutorial and I’ll definitely be giving it a try. Thank you .😊👌

Thank you for kind words. I really appreciate it.
Thank you so much for this video! I have seen where people smock using elastic thread in the bobbin. What do you prefer?
Thank you so much. I love this smocking. How did you smock the sleeves please? I am an eager to learn mature beginner. I am making the same dress.

What type of thread do you use once you get to the embroidery part?
I always use Gutermann sew all threads.

Please how did you do the embroidery, is it a setting on the machine or do you have to use an embroidery machine.
Hi! I have a very basic machine which has a few embroidery stitches, I just chose a couple from there. No I don’t own an embroidery machine.
Sorry if this is a silly question, is shirring with elastic different to smocking?

Do you use elastic in the bottom
No! There’s no elastic used in this method
Can you use an embroidery machine or does the embroidery have to be hand stitch?
This video is about smocking with a simple sewing machine. There is no mention at all of hand embroidery.
Hi can you tell me how to do this for a baby boy romper ( for a christening)
Hi Eileen, I suggest you smock in a strip rather than part of the garment then just add the section to yoke. Hope that helps.
Thanks I Will try it
What dress pattern is this?
Hi! It was Simplicity 1205.
Cómo lo puedo encontrar
What would you like to find?
Hi very nice
Thank you!
Who makes that fabric ?I love the print !!
