That rotunda was a remnant of the previous owner, "Incredible Universe". It was the main entrance, and was an open layout with dueling VR stations. You and a buddy could pay something like $20 each and have a VR laser duel with each of you being in a small ringed station to prevent wandering and fitted with a tethered headset and "gun" controller. Bear in mind, it was 90's VR. Think polygons and techno. The rest of the store was much like a Best Buy with divided departments for appliances, electronics, computers, etc... The Fry's that replaced it tried to use that as an entrance for a while, but eventually closed it for storage and moved the entrance down the side as you see now. This place was my go-to for all computer components. It was like my grown-up toy store. I went to school at the nearby university, so I always had a reason to stop in. It will be sadly missed.
The building was originally Incredible Universe in the 1990s, that's why the left portion by the highway looks like that. Incredible Universe was very short lived and was bought out by Fry's which, for this particular location, only used the center and right portion of the whole building. The left portion of the building was practically abandoned since that purchase. I went to this store a lot when I was a kid and still drive by it today. The last time I visited was early 2020 before the pandemic hit and even then it was rather emptied out. (Update: The entire building is now operating as Canales Furniture)
Yup. Incredible Universe was amazing. Each area of the store had its own theme. The video game area was so cool. As a kid, I can remember visiting and playing the Neo Geo demo unit. Absolutely loved incredible universe
I believe that before Incredible Universe, this building was the original location of Walmart #1800 which is was moved, renamed Hyper Mart and is currently on South Cooper. There was another Fry's on East Northwest Hwy near 635.
I use to work there in 93-95 when it was Incredible universe. I was right out of HS. Crazy memories there. The Frys entrance use to be the IU exit. The IU entrance was on the NW corner that was closed off when Frys opened. All the grass in the back use to be the IU employee parking lot. Thanks for sharing. So bizarre. Met the first girl I ever loved in that building. Aug 93.
I came back home from overseas after 8.5 years and saw that Arlington Fry's was barren. I couldn't find what I wanted like I used to prior to leaving. It's sad that it's gone but I'll always cherish the memories. I remember going back when it was Incredible Universe!
That whole building was originally Incredible Universe. I shopped there in the early '90s before it became Fry's. Incredible Universe was huge and used almost all of the inside of the building. There was an upstairs area with a small restaurant. I used to buy my TurboGrafx-16 games there at Incredible Universe. Fry's had much of the downstairs area walled and sectioned off so they could store inventory off of the sales floor, so as big as Fry's was inside that building, Incredible Universe was much bigger.
I enjoyed your video. I applied for a job there one time and never got it also had Sattalite radio installed in my car. However i used to shop there all the time. I live in Arlington TX too btw. I will miss Fry's They had tons of stuff to choose from. It was my most Favorite Electronic store to look around. They even had music keyboards too. I enjoyed the time being. Hopfully One day someone with enough money will buy it and reopen it. Amazing Footage.
Crystal Pepsi was re-released 2016, 2017, and then 2018. I remember walking around Fry's in 2019 seeing flats of Crystal Pepsi in Fry's.. I wondered if they got a special shipment of it or if it was left over from the previous re-releases.
That left side/circular corner was the original entrance when it was incredible universe. The inside of the store was space themed and dimly lit. Last went in there to buy killer instinct on snes. When i worked at frys in 2008 i'd go upstairs at that circular entrance to use the restroom by the old cafe(incredible universe) and there was still aliens painted on the wall.
2:31 that's the original entrance from Incredible Universe which was another electronic store chain similar to Fry's electronics. This store was probably Incredible Universe before it was Fry's
I'm pretty sure it used to be a frys electronics because the one in Tempe arizona it has the same look & I've seen someone's video when it used to be a incredible universe
Yep. Had 2 Fry's Electronics near where I live. The newer one was built as a Fry's the older was built as an Incredible Universe with the same semi-circle entrance.
The one in Dallas was as well. It was cool that you can still tell what the building used to be in the past. I still have my Incredible Universe membership card, basically an early version of a Randall's or Kroger card. The Houston store was my go-to store for a short while before I left the area for a few years.
I last went to Fry's Electronics in Wilsonville, Oregon back in 2009. I was with my mom and her boyfriend to look at new computers because his was really outdated. From my perspective, (I was 16 at the time) it seemed like it was never ending with all the electronics and appliances. I didn't see the entire store as I spent most of the time looking at the DVDs
Gonna miss Fry's! I went there when they first opened for a printer and ended up spending like 2.5 hours in there can spent way more money then I planned to. Was always a great place to get components to build a PC.
Should check out the one on 635 in North Irving. I used to work there. Each store was themed. We had the history of Irving, Dallas was western and Arlington was a space theme I believe.
In case you are wondering, this particular Fry's Electronics store used to be an Incredible Universe store (another retail chain of consumer electronics) before being sold to Fry's Electronics around 1996.
I actually visited this location in late 2020. I loved Fry's and had no idea they were in trouble. Most of the shelves were bare, there were complete sections that were empty and roped off to the public, buckets in the isles collecting water dripping from the roof, and almost no employees walking the floor. I asked the only employee I could find if Fry's was going out of business. She said no they were just having supply issues. I made a point to walk the entire store just to see if I could find any good deals. The experience was surreal.
I shopped there a LOT, and also once worked there for a short stint in the computer department. Loved the store. Hated those ECS thin mobos but they had some great deals.
I also went in there when it was closing, and grabbed some counters, and other displays & racks for my jewelry store from there. I got the computer workstation from the tech area. Desk, and the peg board plastic tools holders. I remember going there as Incredible Universe. That place was cool. Dark and like going into a Theme park ride. That's when they had the lights low. Some days they'd have the lights up normal. Then that closed down and Fry's got the building.
I went here as a kid all the way to my mid twenties until I moved to North Arlington and rarely went over there after. Got my first job out of high school and would go there to buy GPUs and other computer parts. My dad used to take me there to buy computer games back in the day as well when I was a kid. Lots of memories of going to FRY's there.
A friend of mine used to talk about going there and I always hoped I'd get the chance, but never did. A lot of great stores are going away and it's unfortunate.
This was my Fry's store. It is greatly missed. It had so much stuff you could buy there that you just can't get at Best Buy or anywhere else locally. Try finding ALL the components to build your own computer, or resistors capacitors or anything that is not something people can take out of the box plug in some wires and it works at a local store. If I am working on a project and realize I need something, I have to stop my work until I can get it shipped to me.
The circular section of the building had fake cattle up there. It was definitely a landmark location. Another fun fact is that before this location was fry’s it was incredible universe Currently the only physical store like this, that is currently still in business is microcenter Microcenter smells like the damn 90’s Fry’s before they went out of business was honestly such a heart breaking moment. I remember going inside to find practically only furniture, appliances, cds, DVDs some physical console games and consoles, and lastly the remnants of what used to be the go to location for anything PC Also the circular section I had mentioned that had fake cattle was not a place you could go as a customer, honestly maybe not even as a regular employee. It was just good ol texan decoration lmao
Well if you go to have a look see... go across the street to Joe's Pizza and pasta!!!!! They have the best food!!!! and say Hi to Joe for me... I now live in NC... but we still miss Joe's!!!!
I shopped there a couple of times as Incredible Universe for new "scratch and dent" appliances and got really good deals. I shopped at Fry's twice for computer parts and a sound bar. I kinda think internet sales hurt them as well. I believe the other location was in Carrollton?
there were two fry's electronics that used old Incredible Universe buildings. One in Garland, Texas on Northwest Highway and this location in Arlington, Texas
This Fry's location was an Incredible Universe first, later bought by FRY's. I miss it and the one in Irving TX. Both were great places. I know it was probably already going to go out of business because of the online phenom that I hate, but I believe quarantine did the company in faster than it would have if we weren't forced into lock down everywhere. Arlington seemed to do it's own thing and we were all out and about before quarantine ended, but just 2 weeks of a shut down would huirt any company.
I've been there. It was big inside and had all kinds of stuff related to electronics and computers. But I felt like it was a bit related to older stuff.
Man i remember walking to the store after eating in the nearby buffet with my family. While they still ate I walked there and bought a dvd of angel beats and a copy of edf earth defense force for the xbox 360.
After the abrupt closure of Fry's Electronics, they reopened the stores for fixture sales. All of the merchandise was off limits in the sale, but there were tons of things like shopping baskets, office supplies, holiday decorations, shelving units, old computers, even some of the iconic store design stuff was for sale. For example, at the NASA location in Webster, you could buy a lifesized stuffed astronaut for $1,700. Initially the stores were wide open to walk around and then they began barricading parts of the store to limit people walking around. Sad end to a once vibrant company.
Incredible Universe was owned by the Tandy Corporation (Radio Shack) and was sold to Fry's when Radio Shack was struggling to survive and refocused on the stores with a smaller footprint. We all know how that turned out for them. Let's not forget that Best Buy almost bit the dust as well... I wouldn't blame Best Buy so much as I would blame e-commerce (especially Amazon)... Fry's was slow to embrace online shopping because for so many years they fancied themselves as a destination location much the way IKEA does nowadays. Unfortunately Fry's fell short in the execution of said strategy. Both Incredible Universe & Fry's were great stores in their heyday... I shopped at both whenever I was nearby...
The rounded rotunda area was the entrance, the flat space that you referred to as the entrance was actually the exit. You went in one way, and when exiting there were 20 or more open checkouts and then the exit. It made loss prevention much easier. It was such a big store, it also made it easier to leave then to go to one opening at the front of the store... the upstairs of the rotunda was the restaurant area...
The structure at the front of the building was representative of a universe when the store orginally opened as "the purple store" with the name "Incredible Universe".
Similar, but the biggest difference was their incredible low prices. You used to be able to go there and buy things much lower then the majority of other B&M. But with the rise of Amazons low prices they started to struggle IMO, Covid ultimately sealed the deal
We used to call this Frys the Ghetto Frys because it had no theming except for old worn out shelving units. Still an improvement over Incredible universe and their Tandy credit pushers
I can't speak for all Fry's locations, but the one in Indy used to be a car lot and had cars on the upper level being able to be seen from the interstate. I think all locations were former Incredible Universe electronic stores.
Like others have said I remember going to this building when it was Incredible Universe. I remember playing the early versions of virtual reality there. It was similar in design to oculus but you had to stand within this stand that had a circle around you (with motion sensors) I played the game where you had a blaster that had a single shot and there was a tetradactyl flying around trying to grab you lol
Nice video walieb26, that I believe used to be a incredible universe because the one in Tempe has the same look as this one & it used to be a incredible universe, & did Kayla's Dad go to comp usa just asking if you don't know what's comp usa it's basically the same thing as best buy
That part was part of the fries. It was a different business, but fries to go over the buildings of that business, and they made that into a part of the fries.
You can't imagine the money it costs just to up keep and pay the utilities on a building of that size. It's sad to see a building of that size go to waste.
It would be nice to see this store be repurposed like house a new department store or electronic store or massive movie theater instead of being imploded
I used to work for frys electronics along time ago. Great product selection but they did not care all that much about employees which was also the cause of poor customer service.
Worked there in 2001 - 02 had to quit due to poor air quality. The health department made them clean all the ducks which seemed to make it worse. We we're all breathing years of dried skin cells from the millions of people who shopped there over the previse decade. I had the dreaded mouse ile to stock and maintain. ugg
I think the death of Fry's was caused both by Amazon and the fact that there was a limited number of stores and that they were large. If Fry's had cut back on inventory and gotten smaller stores, and expanded into new markets, maybe they would still be around today.
I remember the first time I walked in there in the early 2000's. It was freaking sensory overload!!! I literally left with a headache, throbbing eyes and wanting to buy most of what was there. It was huge and it seemed like everything was out on the sales floor, too. Electronics, almost any DVD title out there, tons of anything in the computer world...appliances...you name it! Sad to see its gone away. The Fry's in north Irving was a very nicely built building and had a lot of stock. The north Dallas Fry's had a 'Ranch and Rodeo' type theme to it. Between those three stores, I got my parts for computer building and repairs for my side hustle. So long, DFW area Fry's!!!
..and why did we think shopping at Amazon was better than going to an actual real place like this??? I do not understand making bozo bezo rich in order to give up exciting stores and malls !!
I loved frys i used to go there all the time. its such a shame they went under. I worked at the incredible universe, i knew they were doomed they used to make you get a membership I knew people didnt want to have that hastle. RIP FRYS
wow that place was so cool big place's i bet take yall long time look around inside shopping when it was going also out side see long way see city gas station tell your mom in law ty for useding her pickup i drive a white pickup it was my daddy before hepastaway ty for showing this video
When it was Incredible Universe, the two-story section on the left of the building was kind of a mini food court. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incredible_Universe
An awesome drone video, Wallie and Kayla!! Fry's Electronics was really big store! I counted 12 garage bay doors at their loading dock while I watched the drone footage. Was Fry's Electronics a Texas based store? I never saw any Fry's stores up here anywhere in PA, OH, or WV. Have a Fry's Electronicslicious Day! Have a Texaslicious Day! Have a KMartlicious Day!
Always loved going to Fry's Electronics out in San Diego, CA. I think that one was also an Incredible Universe. Too bad that chain didn't make it past a few years. Fry's just couldn't compete with online. As we all know, COVID was the final nail. Sad ending to a great store.
It's wasn't COVID necessarily. Fry's consigned their inventory, which that model was going out of fashion in retail in the 2000s. Now the consignment model isn't really used since people and manufacturers want their money ASAP.

Agree, it was a incredible universe

Is that why a lot of Fry's stores have different themes? Because many of them used to be Incredible Universe stores?

Did the red dome framework above the entrance have a covering with half a globe on it when it was Incredible Universe?

The Houston Community College campus on 610 West Loop, in Bellaire, used to be an Incredible Universe. Never knew this!!

buillt my first computer with parts from fry's. they were like a microcenter combined with best buy. they always had awesome deals on components
Micro Center > Best Buy

Some were later on, but most weren't.
For those who are seeing this update now, aoparrntly the location was bought by anotger company is now a Funiture Store
Nice video walieb26, that I believe used to be a incredible universe because the one in Tempe has the same look as this one & it used to be a incredible universe, & did Kayla's Dad go to comp usa just asking if you don't know what's comp usa it's basically the same thing as best buy
The one end reminds of Incredible Universe.
I see incredible universe on the left side of the store
That part was part of the fries. It was a different business, but fries to go over the buildings of that business, and they made that into a part of the fries.
Just about to sit down in mon city to a big steak and a wallie video, I'm in!
Me my dad and brother used to shop there it was incredible universe before frys also
I shopped that location and the Irving one a lot didn’t realized they closed until I moved to Irving and was looking for a computer cable
ours here in Roseville ca have a train-themed building.
Estuve en esa tienda y la verdad fue de lo mejor que visite, muy buenos precios y lo mejor era muy confortable y bonito.
You can't imagine the money it costs just to up keep and pay the utilities on a building of that size.
It's sad to see a building of that size go to waste.
Isn't this building the old Forum 303 mall in Arlington?
It would be nice to see this store be repurposed like house a new department store or electronic store or massive movie theater instead of being imploded
I used to work for frys electronics along time ago. Great product selection but they did not care all that much about employees which was also the cause of poor customer service.
Worked there in 2001 - 02 had to quit due to poor air quality. The health department made them clean all the ducks which seemed to make it worse. We we're all breathing years of dried skin cells from the millions of people who shopped there over the previse decade. I had the dreaded mouse ile to stock and maintain. ugg
Cool 😀
It's crazy I stay down the street from here
I think the death of Fry's was caused both by Amazon and the fact that there was a limited number of stores and that they were large.
You guys need to come over to Florida especially jax
I loved frys i used to go there all the time. its such a shame they went under. I worked at the incredible universe, i knew they were doomed they used to make you get a membership I knew people didnt want to have that hastle. RIP FRYS
To the left was the original entrance/exit when it was Incredible Universe. Fry's never used that as an entrance/exit.
wow that place was so cool big place's i bet take yall long time look around inside shopping when it was going also out side see long way see city gas station tell your mom in law ty for useding her pickup i drive a white pickup it was my daddy before hepastaway ty for showing this video
When it was Incredible Universe, the two-story section on the left of the building was kind of a mini food court.

You did a real JoJo take pictures up near opt sky theater real good job OK see you next Monday next video
ZHay Wallieb I heard more stores to close this year
had to look for any vids about this store cus i literally live 10min away from here. tbh i probably missed out the liquidate sales and stuffs but eh.
That was my favorite store they closed all the stores be COVID 🥺🥺🥺🥺😢😢😢
Because it used to be an incredible universe
Always loved going to Fry's Electronics out in San Diego, CA. I think that one was also an Incredible Universe. Too bad that chain didn't make it past a few years. Fry's just couldn't compete with online. As we all know, COVID was the final nail. Sad ending to a great store.
It's wasn't COVID necessarily. Fry's consigned their inventory, which that model was going out of fashion in retail in the 2000s. Now the consignment model isn't really used since people and manufacturers want their money ASAP.
I've shopped at this one before I bought an external hard drive
Update: it is now a canales furniture and it barely has any customers
God I miss fry's this was my local fry's so recently I was going to go to frys to fix My computer fan then I realized it was closed
Everything seems bigger in Texas.
had many of car shows in that parking lot. :(
This probably doubled as a distribution center
