I kinda like the idea of the more realistic version being the one they use on the surface because those suits are better suited for constant radiation such from the vacuum of space, while the classic suits are moreso an "inside" suit that's looser and more maneuverable for low gravity underground moon life
The _Apollo_ space suits weren't designed to protect astronauts from radiation. Maybe the future versions could have some sort of electromagnetic shield (which would also help with the dust), or polythene panels, but until then, the only option is to limit durations of EVA's.
I personal think it would be better to use the more realistic astronauts, however, I also think it would be an interesting idea if in the corner there was a second smaller (1 or 2 buildings) moonbase built in the style of the classic spacemen.
This video is almost as expensive as the moonlandings themselves. All jokes aside i absolutely love the moon project so far it looks stunning. Perhaps it would be interesting for some colour contrast in the terrain to have some of the moons "rust"
What I like about the old astronauts is the storytelling since each color suit represents a different job, blue is mechanic, yellow is scientist, red/white are pilots/crew, black are spies etc.
The modern/realistic spacionaut is indeed better with the look of the current MOC, maybe using the classic lego space torsos as some sort of Star Trek-ish uniform for the spacionauts in the pressurised underground base. I would suggest a cut of the underground base in the front of the table, and also to build a moon rover for the spacionauts (with visible tracks or something). Edit: Just a suggestion, classic space minifigs are expensive as hell. If you don't have already a load tons of it, maybe use the futuron minifigs: they are quite similar and a lot more cheaper.
The sets these new realistic astronauts come in also have bright blue jumpsuits for the people within the base. They look much better for that purpose, and also have a little space logo on them
I think the more realistic astronaut helmet really make the EVA scenes look better. I would suggest maybe playing with the colors of the suits tho, similar to how Star Trek has different colors for different roles. This could also be related to the “jump suits” that the figs wear inside the base, which could be the classic space lego suits
When you were explaining the plans for “uncovering the secrets of the universe” on the surface, it reminded me of the moon obelisk in 2001: A Space Odyssey
I feel like a combination of both minifigs would be so cool. The more modern space suits for when the astronauts are actually on the moon surface and then the old school ones ( maybe minus the helmet) for when they're in the moon base. The colourful outfits would kinda be like the star trek outfits, maybe different colour showing rank
I think the helmets are too iconic to not include personally. Besides, interactions between the different types could be quite creative. For example, two astronauts pointing at each other like that one Spider-Man meme
excellent! two ideas: 1) build a small forced perspective backing to the layout so the sky looks more spacelike/distant, and 2) use the classic minifigs as if those are their inside the base jumpsuits, so don't have them wear helmets etc.
I like the idea of using both minifigs. Realistic for outside and the oldschool inside makes it kinda look like a full space suit vs the partial space suit someone would wear as they are inside since they arent always geared up completly
It’s looking really polished. Being 10 when the first original classic space sets came out I’m kinda partial to the colorful astronauts. But, I can see your point with the realism of the newer generation of mini figs. Build on!
Love your idea of using the old guys in the interior. It could be like there uniform clothes instead of a spacesuit I think it works as that especially if you just swap the helmet for a hair piece.
If you go with the modern style astronauts, I really think it'd be nice to have the chromed visors over the metallic gold, (pricing aside) it'd be a nice little eye-catching detail I think, to have those little reflective visors dotted around the moon surface.
I love the idea of using the more modern astronauts for the lunar surface and then the classic space guys for the interior base. I think that's a great way to blend them!
I really like the classic space look. I think if the moon base was based off of that it would look so cool! I could also just see the new galaxy explorer looking so good on that landing pad! Maybe then you could modernize other space sets?
It’s more then likely that the Dynetics lander system will be picked if starship is not ready in time and that lander is fairly interesting as it’s a wide lander vs the massively tall starship or the still tall but not as tall blue origin proposal. It’s a cool design and I would love to see a version of it in Lego. If not, you could go back to the constellation program and use the Altair lunar lander instead as that fits the pad you use already.
I personally prefer the classic spacemen, I think they just make it feel a lot more like Lego in the best way and I think that fits the aesthetic of this base and the other layouts you have by giving it a nostalgic feel
Great video! I prefer the white astronaut, but I' d like the yellow nostalgic one to somehow involved in it... But do what you like and want to, we love to watch your videos!
Ok, next thing to add is hab units and also same greenhouse or telescope to watch stars from the moon. This is really cool looking. Waiting for another part soon
Awesome ! I agree concerning the astronauts. Concerning the size of the rocket: don't forget that the gravity of the moon is not as strong as the Earth'one. In that way, if you want to have more "futuristic" stuffs, you can think about a smaller and shorter version of the SLS lauch-rocket. Moon gateway is more realistic, but your base is very futuristic. So you can have some imagination ;) .
With older large craters usually you have a rise in the middle of the crater from the exterior falling in so maybe adding that would be nice? Just a thought, love the moon base so far!
Maybe you could use the new astronauts as the main mini-figures and hide the old ones around as details or secrets? maybe even put an old one in some futuristic stasis tube chamber in the background or something.
I agree you should consider keeping the old style spacesuits for the underground base (assumed to be pressurized, breathable). Mini-figs "indoors" could have hair or hats designating their job (engineer, etc.), in addition to uniform color. The retro suits in-universe would be like a standard issue outfit for the moon expedition crew.
I think you should have the realistic astronauts for the majority of the base and then have a few classic lego astronauts hidden throughout as easter eggs. Maybe 3 or so in the primary colors (red, yellow, blue) You could even include Benny :)
Since no-one else is talking about landers, you have to look at the ground support equipment you've already built. You are limited to about half the width of the landing pad or 16 x 16 studs for the main hull if you don't want it to look wierd, especially if it has landing gear that folds out wider. You also have the existing tankage, and how much that would fill the vehicle. You could add some buried tanks to increase it (in reality the top domes poking up through the regolith and connected to your existing tanks via hoses with a shelter cover over the top). that might need flattened land, but you can justfy it by adding a moondozer of some sort. As to the lander itself, you are probably limited to a tailsitter rather than a belly lander, based on the size of the pad. The main hull is probably going to be a cylinder, unless you want to flex and go for a sphere, similar to the lunar landers in 2001. The bridge could be on the top, but it might extend out over or from the side of the hull, with windows that give a view both straight up and straight down, since even if you have cameras, you may want direct vision for landing on your tail as well as flying upwards. if you wanted to balance the shape, have the other side with an airlock that protrudes from the hull. Since it's purely a shuttle from the surface to lunar orbit, it doesn't need streamlining, and can have extended booms for senors and antennas sticking out. If the main hull is a cylinder or other straight sided vehicle, you might have a fold out lift that runs along tracks from the airlock near the top down to the ground, or a winch that lowers a platform that can be used to reach the surface. On similar notes, how much of the structure will be an external framework. will the fuel tanks be exposed, held in a cage of struts, or concealed in the main hull? One thing you need to ensure is that the engine bells are large (the four stud wide cylinders would be good) as these are vacuum rated engines, not for use in atmosphere, and so need a larger expansion ratio. Does it use solar power cells, and are the conformal on the hull, (like Dragon Mk 2) or on extendable booms (like the Orion capsule). Or does it use fuel cells or something more exotic like a micro nuclear power plant, like the Kilopower ones thay are developing for Mars and Moon exploration (an RTG would not provide enough power for a manneed lander). Another potential sticky outy bit would be radiator panels, they are the white, zigzag things you see on the ISS. Though you might get away with making them conformal on the hull. It's hard to lose heat in space, as the whole thing is basically a thermos flask. So, those are some ideas I had, just throwing them out there. I look forward to seeing if you use any of them. I am very impressed with the build so far, though another use of the moon dozer might be to build a raised berm to sit the landing pad on rather than simply having it raised on stilts. It would support more weight, though admittedly that isn't such a problem on the moon, and harder landings.
A mixture of both minis would be perfect. The modern ones could be the surface maintenance crew as their gear is more suited for prolonged exposure, and the classic minis could be the lander pilots and base crew as their gear is less bulky and allows for better movement when working in the base.
Obviously based in my profile it’s hard to go against the classic Space but I think the realistic ones would be cool for this build, especially with the sense of realism you are bringing to it
One idea for this base/landscape is to add a structure which forms the exit of a "Space Gun", that has been dug down into the surface. A Space Gun is essentially an alternative of a Space Elevator, a method of cheaply launching material into orbit. It's a long shaft of an electro-magnetic rail, for example propelled by batteries charged by solar power. The Space Gun accelerates and shoots cargo capsules far up above the surface, after which the capsules use small rocket engines to place the cargo into orbit, which drastically reduces cost of putting material into orbit. With a Space Gun, you could perhaps run with a "story" that your moon base is an industrial mining colony which constructs components and launches them for construction of large space structures, like big mining ships for mining the asteroid belt, or for putting together large space stations up in orbit. :)
It might be more costly, but I think the chrome gold astronauts helmets from the early 2000s are the best looking astronauts Lego has ever made. I recommend getting a couple to see for yourself. They look much nicer over that chrome blue Life on Mars figure you showed here.
I'm of the opinion you should mix the astronauts. The interactions between them could be really funny with a little imagination. You could even do that one Spider-Man pointing meme!
What fun the lander will be. If you want to make it highly realistic, it should look closer to the LEM than the Starship, as shuttling between the surface and the lunar station requires no aerodynamics. Unlike the LEM, it wouldn't have 2 stages, and could be much more top-heavy (landing on a level platform). The engine bell should be extra wide to avoid damage to the platform. Weight would be at an absolute premium to minimize fuel spent, so there realistically would be small or no windows. Assuming the program is using ice on the surface to manufacture hydrogen as fuel, the fuel tank will need to be proportionally much bigger than the LEM tanks. Good luck! Excited to see the lander however it turns out.
I think you should go with the more realistic one because I think it would fit in better than the original spaceman. I like the other one with the chrome blue visor, it looks so cool but you should go with the realistic one. Great video and I like your ideas for the future, love the content keep it up 👍 😁
Awesome progress! Build a short, fat rocket. It only needs enough fuel to reach orbit, with it's low gravity. It does not need to be long nor sleek, be creative!
I still really like the idea of mixing and matching different astronaut types, so I'm super in favor of the idea of having realist EVA suits above ground and the more classic guys underground.
this is so cool! although putting the realistic spaceman is the better choice ,maybe you could add a separate, goofier, spaceship on the side, unless you want the moon base to be as realistic as possible. Keep it up!

The classic one kinda looks likes Space X's launch suit so they could be in the base as a more casual uniform.
Yup
Set 60349 is the one that he said in the video Lunar Space Station
0:41 Watching somebody build in a time laps like that is really satisfying
This video is almost as expensive as the moonlandings themselves.
All jokes aside i absolutely love the moon project so far it looks stunning.

The old astronaut suits might make good "inside" suits, wheras the new white suits could be the "outside" exosuit
