Mariah had plenty of #1s without Walter: Vision of love, someday, IDWC, LTT, Emotions, Fantasy, Always be my baby, Honey, Heartbreaker, thank god I found you (in the 90s). Wbt, dfau, tmb in the 00s
Mariah has stated in the 1997 MTV interview “you know when you tell a friend a secret and they blab it to the world” Mariah wrote “My All” “Fourth Of July” “Butterfly” “Whenever You Call” “Lead The Way” with him during that separation period. Mariah revealed it to him in the most vulnerable way - her singing and her music. Walter knew about her affair. He knew the real inspiration behind her more profound songwriting. More than anyone. And he carelessly just told Tommy about it. I get that Tommy had more power than Mariah, but a real friend would keep his integrity and protect you, especially if you’re already having such a difficult time. Him saying that Mariah is jealous that he worked with other artists is just him projecting - to find something negative about MC. Babyface, Puffy, Rooney, David Morales, Jermaine are other co-writers of Mariah that work with many other artists as well. And Mariah literally don’t give a shit if they do because she knows she’s naturally gifted with songwriting and the melodies that’s revealed to her by the Almighty can never be duplicated or copied. No one can offer what she has to offer. Walter did her dirty. While she continued to have enormous success without him. And he’s bitter about it. Mariah can go ~
@@musicworldnow365 the weird thing is that she’s done RnB since the start of her career and did it full blown since Dreamlover. The only thing that stood during Butterfly is that she wrote a song about “honey”.
@@Solo-vh9fm I'm confused. Are you talking about the sexual innuendo of the lyrics or that it's the only song that prominently incorporates Hip-Hop into it? If it's the former, I agree. If it's the latter, that's incorrect. Honey, The Roof, Breakdown, and Babydoll all incorporated Hip-Hop.
It's interesting that she says "I wish him well" which has somewhat become part of the Mariah vernacular as a sort of "forgive but don't forget / let go but learn". Loved this analysis and I agree that a Mariah / Walter in-depth discussion would be great with a panel!
@@musicworldnow365 can you imagine if they did a sit down reunion to hash it out in a similar style to the recent Fresh Prince of Belair thing where Will and the original Aunt Viv finally made up haha. I know they never would. But it would definitely be interesting
Mariah’s beef with Walter is simple. He was a musician hired by Sony. She was a singer-songwriter who didn’t play instruments. So, Mariah “wrote” the songs in terms of lyrics & melody, but Walter filled in the gaps to flesh it out to completion. He wanted to be credited as the secret to her success, but he wasn’t. As prolific as he is, Mariah wrote plenty of songs without him including several #1s. If you look at most of Walter’s career without Mariah, it’s mainly producing, not songwriting. It’s the same way Quincy Jones wanted credit for all of Michael Jackson’s success. Same story.
It's funny you bring in M.J. who, while I think was a genius and I own most of his work, perhaps was a bit overrated as a songwriter, while Mariah certainly is underrated in that realm. Quincy Jones IS a genius but I think the music business leans itself very much towards greed, poor business practices, and lots of fraudulent or mean activities, because everyone is trying get the biggest chuck of the cake. There is a positive correlation between the level of poverty these people come from and to what fainting heights of wealth some can reach (before the fall). It is just an extremely dangerous territory, perhaps only second to gambling or stock market investments.
@Lee Irby Quincy only wrote ONE song for Michael and that was PYT which he co-wrote with James Ingram. MJ wrote the big hits along with Rod Temperton. Also, he didn’t write We Are The World.
@@grammyyelog well in life you can’t do something wrong to somebody and control the way they respond or process it. If Mariah wants to cut people out of her life due to disloyalty then she has the right to do that as you would if someone was disloyal to you
@@maurice1263 she can cut anyone she wants out of her life but to be bitter all her life is damaging to her. Walter and Tommy are doing well financially as much as Mariah is, but in happiness, Im sure she is losing. Her best therapy are her children.
Omg! I’ve never heard Mariah talk about “Til the end of time” ❤️ I can hands down say that is my favorite MC song....maybe it’s for the nostalgia of being 11 in 5th grade when my great grandmother bought me the emotions cd for Christmas (1994) lol but seriously my fav song from MC!
Mariah gives me the impression that she wants to say “Walter takes to much credit for the things I came up with” but she stops herself, she always says that she comes up with the melodies, lyrics, vocals and Walter just plays the instruments and puts it together, after she okays him to, Especially when she brings up the publishing issues its like mariah was doing most of the hard work on the songs and here comes walter at the end putting his name on it and getting a large part of the ownership (money) of the song because The record company hired him so it forces mariah to share writing credits even though she came up with the sounds in her head. That’s what she was talking about in that interview, that she can’t express it due to her not knowing how to write music but she knows how it sounds so walter plays for her until she says “okay thats what i want” and walter again takes credit automatically, Walter basically confirms my theory because in a 2018 interview he said mariah doesn’t like to share credit with people
Yes! That is the most typical yet unspoken issue in the music business for most singer/songwriters who don’t play instruments. MC is shedding a light on it but maybe not being fully articulate about it. I and many of my singer/songwriter friends have been through exact similar ordeals with musicians who always demean any singer/songwriter who don’t play instruments and ask for shared credits when they’re just channels for someone else’s vision. That’s why this whole new generation is always flaunting their “live” playing instrument skills like LGaga as a supposed beacon of credibility. But you can master 100 instruments and still not know how to write a hit record which audiences fail to understand. That’s why MC, Madonna, Janet in her days, MJ, Adele or Ariana Grande have so many n.1 songs, their songwriting is instinctive and touches people. That’s also why smart producers often hire something called a top liner to create melodies on instrumental tracks. Usually top liners are singers. They’re different talents. In my opinion the credit needs to be shared 50-50 when the instrumental track precedes the melody but if it’s the other way round then no way but the singer who doesn’t play an instrument (the greatest singers often don’t since their voice is their instrument) often gets screwed in that process. I wish she’d articulate that more. There was a great TV moment where John douche Oates attacks Madonna at a conference for similar issues. (Who remembers him today?). It’s probably why Quest brought Walter up on the down low. Can’t stand these musicians who mix up talent and skill and try to intimidate those who do have god given talents with their academic skills....endless ordeal. It’s also why Madonna called Quest on a Tonight Show episode asking if he had a problem with her...
Obviously Walter will like to take a 50% credit by doing only 10% of the work because the only hits he had as a songwriter was with Mariah. Otherwise people won't even see him as a songwriter.
I don't know if he really receives that much because, as Questlove asked and Mariah avoiding answering the question about Sony receiving a large portion of his royalties. I'm guessing since Mottola was immediately smitten with her, he ensured that she got an unheard-of publishing deal/royalty rate for a new artist. In contrast, Sony received a large portion of Walter's part of the publishing and royalties.
, I wouldn't include Grande as she has dozens of co-writers for not only her music but her lyrics as well. Mariah wrote almost all of the lyrics to her songs by herself until Rainbow, except the covers.
I have a slight suspicion that Walter was one of Tommy’s friends that was there when the ‘knife’ incident happened and that’s why they don’t speak. Because Mariah references Tommy’s friends being there, and not saying a word and not protecting her like they have should I guess
@@JefersonSantos-bt1ef read the book for further details but tl;dr: tommy held a butter knife to mariah's face while his friends (allegedly walter) watched and did nothing
From listening to a 1997 interview Mariah did with Tabitha from MTV, I got the sense that when writing 'My All' with Walter, he may have reported back to Tommy about Mariah's romance with Derek Jeter and their song writing partnership ended then.
@@HeyLamb ruclips.net/video/eANFQr9jcOU/видео.html In this video (from 6 mins 26 seconds to 9 mins 17 seconds) Mariah discusses her work with Walter on the Butterfly album. When Tabitha asked her about fighting with Walter during recording, Mariah said she and Walter did have a fight but it was over something personal, like when you tell your friend a secret and they blab it to the world. This is what made me think she'd told Walter about Derek whilst writing My All and he passed this secret onto Tommy. Just my intuition talking!
I took 5 music publishing courses at UCLA with the head of Universal Publishing, an exec at Warner Chappell and the leading music lawyer in the US. Copyright of a song is just the melody and the lyrics. You are supposed to make any instrumentalists and producers sign "Work for Hire" contacts so they don't take any publishing rights, and it's a one time payment. Mariah coming up with the lyrics and melodies - what you'd sing a capella - most of the time should have 100% of the copyrights in those songs. Adding "the beat" and piano chords or instrumental bass lines and instruments and sound effects are not apart of the copyright unless it's so recognizable that a listener instantly would know the drum beat or bass line, such as in "Under Pressure" that's mostly a beat driven song. This reason is why the judge ruled Vanilla Ice infringed on the copyright. Some producers like Walter, ask for publishing rights, and he might have written more melodies - not lyrics - than we'll ever likely know unless they get very specific. Lyrics without melodies are just poems. I suspect he should have had less than half of the publishing rights for those songs since Mariah would come up with most of the lyrics and melodies of the verses, choruses and bridges - which is the whole copyright of the song! If you really want the producer, you might give them publishing rights. Mariah likely didn't know early on about music law and gave away more publishing rights than she had to. She knows now. She had a "Sunset Clause" on her publishing that ended in 2005, and she switched to Universal Pub at the time, as confirmed by my teacher who is the head of it. It's one of the main reasons why she named the album Emancipation... - she was completely severed from contracts with Sony except for her back catalogue. I like music law, and the explanation might be a lot for some, and others might like it.
@@musicworldnow365 I really wish I had stayed in Los Angeles after graduating in 2006, but I couldn't find a job, but regret it because it forced me into other fields and had a lot of harassment I think I wouldn't have experienced in a more artsy field like music even if it was publishing. I live in LA now again. I took all my music business and songwriting classes in 2005-6. The most comprehensive book is by brothers Jeff and Todd Brabec- Music, Money and Success. They've updated it. It was used in several classes, and my main music law class by Dina LaPolt - lawyer to Britney Spears and Steven Tyler. I think you can take classes at UCLA Extension online now without applying.
The shade towards Walter about All I Want for Christmas is You was pretty clear in the previous Genius Level interview. The problem with Walter might be that Mariah was too naive to see that he was Tommy‘s guy from the beginning, no matter how many songs they worked on together. Whatever Walter provided for Mariah, he could just give away to anybody if needed, I mean Celine and Christina sounded more like Mariah than ever in My Heart Will Go On and Nobody Wants to be Lonely. No shades towards the two singers as they might not want that at all. We all know Mariah was desperately trying to prove she’s more than a Tommy production, which pretty much meant a Walter production at the same time. Now, Mariah is confident enough about her own artistry to acknowledge Walter, which also means that Walter is cancelled to her forever because he really isn’t needed.
She has to prove that she aint a Sony Industry Baby that does alot of adult contemporary music/ballads that people loved about her. They brag about "Old Mariah","Missing Her Tommy Days","1990-1996".They cant see Mariah after 1997.They treated her like a different person just because the "Diva attitude" excuse even with Emancipation 2005 being another best seller. She cant win.Society after her Tommy divorce are against her decisions of what she do in the industry and her lifestyle.
@@mohamedhaikal829 I persoanlly think what people really miss is her prime-time vocal, not necessarily her pre-1997 music style. Those who did appreciate Tommy stule Mariah already ditched her during Glitter.
I don’t think they will ever work together again. Mariah seems to me the type that once a bridge is burned , it’s burned 🔥🔥🔥. I just finished the Questlove interview...soooo good!! She was so comfortable with them was able to be herself as opposed to most interviews where she feels the need to be more reserved. Her tangents were everything!!!!
I miss their partnership, in fact they wrote together my favorite ballads of her such as hero, anytime you need a friend, my all, 🦋, forever, and you don’t remember, can’t let go, they were an excellent team
I’ve always gotten the impression that Mariah isn’t very fond of Celine for some reason. I don’t think she feels threatened by her talent bc I mean... she loves and adores some really talented singers like Whitney, Patti, Aretha, and Beyoncé. I have a feeling she might just not be into Celine’s music since Celine mostly does pop contemporary ballads, which we all know Mariah used to do a lot of and strayed as far away from that sound as possible during the late 90s and onwards. Everyone knows Mariah, Whitney, and Celine are all legends and have amazing voices, but from a listener’s perspective, I’ve always felt like Mariah has the most interesting and versatile sound/discography, Whitney had the most soulful tone, while Celine never really veered from her pop ballad sound. I also agree that Mariah may have felt some type of way about Walter working with other divas like Celine. Kind of reminds me of Whitney expressing her annoyance of Madonna scoring hits with Babyface in an interview after she worked with him prior to Madonna.
Yeah, there's something there but I can't quite put my finger on it. There are a few quotes but nothing really strong or damning. I think there is respect there but I don't think we'll ever get a Mariah & Celine moment. I do enjoy a lot of Celine's music and I enjoy her passion and personality! 😊
The vibe I get is that Mariah doesn’t DISLIKE Celine, but she doesn’t fuck with her, either. Sometimes you meet people and you don’t have a reason to dislike them, but your personalities don’t mesh so you don’t go out of your way to associate with them.
I thought she had moved on from the Divas thing, Celine is likely the reason Dem Kids are here today, and Mariah publicly sent her condolences when Rene passed but then the Memoir happened and when she was talking about it I thought she was going to say something like “me and this diva are cool” but no, Celine seems to be like JLO to Mariah. Whitney never had a public friendship with Celine either, interestingly. Celine is unproblematic though so it’s just baffling.
I don’t think Mariah necessarily cared about him working with other people. I think it was more the fact that he was one of Tommy’s people. In a time where you consider your ex-husband a threat to your career, you aren’t going to necessarily want to work with someone if you don’t think you can trust them. Mariah was incredibly nervous about Tommy where her career was concerned. I can stand by Walter staying with Tommy. He presented Walter a much more secure career than Mariah could have offered him. I also want to say I suspect he may have been the other collaborator in the room during the butterknife incident. We know Cory Rooney was there because of the tweet he sent confirming. I can see Mariah like you know what right or wrong I can’t keep these people in my life that remind me of a terrible point in my life.
My point was that on paper staying with Tommy offered him more ways to make money than staying with Mariah could have. Clearly, their paths went very different after they parted ways. It wasn’t like Mariah was putting out material everyday, so staying under Tommy and getting work while you can made sense.
@@ianfrancis4181 in life you need to risk in order to win something, walter din't belived in Mariah, and i guess he regreted It, looking back, he can see he was a coward
I think that the best way to describe their relationship is that "it was a really good moment in time". I agree with you that she should never work with him again and maybe, it's for the best. We (as Lambs) have had GREAT songs from their collaboration and we should be thankful for that. However, once the trust is broken, there is no turning back. And Mariah is known for turning the other cheek and forgiving, but there's only so much one person can take. Plus, there is NO DOUBT in my mind that during the "butterknife incident", he was there along with Cory Rooney (who went as far as confirming it on his ig before deleting the post). And I think that the "mob-like loyalty" she's referring to in her memoirs is a very revealing terminology. I don't think he was just reporting back to TM. It was deeper than that and have may or may not even put her in danger in some situations. So all in all, yes we are grateful for the many songs they produced together but I'm 100% on Mariah's corner and I don't think they should (nor need) work together again.
Walter used to say that Mariah had most of the song written before bringing it to him and that he add the bells and whistles and thought she was doing scales. He used to diss that record until it became a standard, most likely because of his limited involvement. He's only trying to take more credit for the writing of the song in hopes that it will open more doors for him professionally. My favorite Mariah/Walter collaboration is either Butterfly or My All.
@@HeyLamb Does anyone else remember when Mariah and Walter supposedly got into a heated argument at a restaurant, and she allegedly threw ice at him and his date, a singer named Samantha?
@@HeyLambI believe it was in Page Six, so it was probably a rumor planted by Mottola. It said she was upset that he was working with her and felt betrayed, but she had already ended their working relationship, so it never really made sense to me.
All Walter has to do is to apologize to Mariah and come clean for ditching and snitching on her, that's all, if you know you will know what I mean by that, Mariah knows this and Walter knows this too, If he continues to play a victim and saying bad things about Mariah here and there then he keeps reducing his chance of having at least some works on his remaining life, we and Mariah knows how great of a piano player he is and that ear is gifted, and we also know Mariah is the only partner he will ever be associated with, so he has to swallow his pride ( or should I say "stop worrying about Tommy") and just come clean and say sorry to our sister, You know what, the night Mariah was talking about at the dinner table on her memoir, where Tommy held a knife to her cheek Walter was there too?? Well, he has a lot he witnessed to not talk, for him to think Mariah would just be like "We love everybody" and call him to work together, the nerve he has, Mariah thought of Walter as a friend and someone close, most of Mariah songs were personal and dear to her, she spends time and feelings to them, she comes and sings and directed Walter where she wants the songs to go, that means she even maybe told Walter what some of them lyrics are really about, she trusted Walter, she came to Walter for some stuffs regarding her house with Tommy, remember Mariah said she felt more at home in the studio than in her own house with Tommy?, now who was she in the studio with 24-7? Walter, now you can see how close of a bond that was, He is at fault to the core, after him and what he did, Mariah never trusted anyone from there on, sometimes I wished Trey would know how to play piano like Walter, coz i think he is the only person that stayed loyal to Queen Mariah to this day, God bless you Trey. So Walter, if you are out of work, you know what to do, and also I feel like the diva thing makes people thinks of Mariah as difficult but I think Mariah is the sweetest person on earth, you just have to be real around her, mariah hasnt said a lot of stuffs through out her career about so many things and so many people to avoid hurting people, she a sweetheart, Mariah don't need nobody to stay relevant, its just God, herself and a pen, she can do her songs a capella and it would still sell, they needs her, and that's why, even Walter when he thought he was right to do mariah like that around that time she needed her , he hasn't worked on anything with anyone memorable to this day, Mariah has gone on to have a tremendously best and bigger career after him, I can go on but I'm tired of him, let the ship sail.
Songs like I wish you well, Portrait and Petals are all about the people that could've been riding along but didn't because of their greed, Walter is one of them. Still, I do think he would've gotten a chance if he'd just stayed quiet after their feud and valued her as a true friend like Trey and Jermaine, but Walter keeps bringing up his arrogance when being asked about Mariah.
I’ve been a lamb since Vision Of Love & I fell in love with Love Takes Time. I have such fond memories listening to ballads on Emotions, Music Box, Daydream etc - many co-written with Walter. I admired the work they done together & because those songs were around the time I became a mega fan they will always hold a special place. This was before the shift towards r&b & the rappers - it was just Mariah, that voice & those songs - that’s what a fell in love with in those early days. Even now, what I love nothing more is hearing MC just sing, stripped back, no hangers on - I think it was this magic that came through in the songs they done together. At the time they needed each other - both fairly new to the business, Mariah provided her voice & songwriting & Walter provided the musical aspects & the glue that moulded the songs into what they would become. Mariah has obviously moved on, it was a magical place in time & in her career. I’m sure Walter has regrets about what happened, as does Mariah - no one really knows for sure - maybe in the future they could be reunited & thrash out the issues & talk about the songs they created together.
I guess the ones they wanted Mariah and Walter together, is because they don't understand exactly what he did to her.... I was one of them, and now i understood more of It, and i'm happy Mariah moved on, and she din't let him do more harm....
Great insightful video as always. Had never heard about the Celine Dion thing. Figures since Dion was married to a Tommy like figure. Makes me love our Butterfly even more that she stands by her truth and plowed though all that sh*t. It’s very clear to hear what Walter A brought to the table, just by listening to songs where he’s not participating. He’s clearly a skilled musician and even though Mariah has that melodic magic touch that MJ also had which trained musicians rarely own, it’s clear that he brought a classic element to her instinctive songwriting that doesn’t appear in songs where he’s not featured. That said if he was a Tommy toy soldier then he needs to be dismissed. His recent interviews don’t necessarily showcase the sweetest person but who knows what’s really there. Quest is the real mastermind here for asking that question. I wonder if it was authorized prior to the interview. She knows it’s a question that will get him and his podcast major attention so...nice present if she did know. Otherwise it’s a wise but sly move from him if she didn’t. Can’t wait for pt 2.
Thank you for your comment. I don’t think Mariah was necessarily expecting that question. It was a bit out of the blue, direct and she seemed resigned to answer it. I think she handled it very well. Part two of the interview is already out and is equally enjoyable 😀💖
Finally a Walter A video! Always been fascinated with their working relationship. They certainly created many hits together. I hope somedaaaa *whistles* aaaay in time they would collaborate again for the love of music. Much love to Mariah & Walter A! ❤️
I think Mariah still has a big respect to Walter. She chose to keep mum about what apparently happened when they fallout but there are some people we have to let go in our lives no matter how much memories and moments we had with that person but it's good to say it was a history.
We cannot forget the song 'Portrait'from the Caution album Mariah wrote with her MD Daniel Moore which in my opinion is as good as anything Mariah wrote with Walter's assistance!!!
Do people have read the book? The episode when Tommy put a knife against Mariah's cheek. There were two other men in that room. The 1st one was Cory Rooney (he recognized it) and thd other guy was Walter (Mariah didn't give the names). Walter saw that and stayed close to Tommy. So..
Mariah wrote the lyrics. Walter helped with the music. She wrote the sole lyrics for her 4 full albums that he was apart of. Not taking away from his production, but this narrative of him contributing to the lyrics she already had. No. She would have the melodies, the lyrics already presented. Look on Wikipedia of if you own her albums its hard me to believe a lamb wouldnt see on the linear notes that she's the sole writer for the Lyrics. Stop with this partnership, Mariah needed minor assistance for a hook, but this man didnt help write her songs. If it was a partnership it would be 50/50, It was never the case. She's simply the greatest singer-songwriter ever.
Mariah is on record saying Walter added chord progressions which she didn't like to her song, so he was definitely part of the melodic writing. He wasn't just playing random stuff on the piano for her and she picked what he liked, there's a reason all the songs she wrote with him have a similar style.
I don't know if lambs know this, but here something perhaps interesting. Lara Fabian who is also a songwriter and a great vocalist who writes many of her own songs, worked with Walter for her first English album when she got signed with Sony. Supposedly Lara and Walter had an intimate relationship for some time, although I don't know how true this is, since majority of Lara's documentaries, news, and information mainly available only in French, but basically that's what was claim. There was also clip of Walter's presence when Lara won or performed at an prestigious French award show, which indicates they definitely know or worked together. In her self titled English album, there's a song called Broken Vow which is a fan favorite written by Lara and Walter, she describes the song, as talking about "betrayal and forgiveness", fans claim that song is about her relationship with Walter, although that is questionable. That is interesting because, once again, unsure of the accuracy, supposedly Walter tried to take away Lara's credit as songwriter for the song. Plus, looking at Lara's previous work before she got signed with Sony and after leaving the label, Lara was and still is credited as the main songwriter. This shows she has great control over her songs and albums. However, for her English album with Sony, she was not credited as the main writer of the songs. Lara's name was mentioned as a writer but never really as the main writer including Broken Vow considering that song is her own work, questioning whether the claim Walter taking away her credit as the main songwriter contains truth. It's obvious Lara had no control of her first English album or her credit was stripped away. Then, she left the label and decided to go back to Europe. Wonder if working with Walter is one of the many contributing factors for her leaving. Some people also claim Walter is great to work with but not necessarily a great person which is why he's not known as much, but the truth is questionable. Just several information of one of the person Walter worked with before.
It's not unsure that they were together, they both said they were engaged. In her last french documentary released last year, she talked about their relationship and how she thinks the breakup is one of the main reasons why she didn't make it in the US. Broken vow is about Walter, she wrote the lyrics by herself and also co-composed the song with him but he refused to give her credit for it when she asked to.
@@SH-uy8li The time I knew about this, was before the recent interview/documentary. Prior to that, majority of sources were mainly in French, so I'm unsure of the clarity. It's good that it's confirmed now. Plus, songwriting credit is very sacred, especially for someone like Lara and Mariah, people taking the credit/ refusal to give credit is like a crime to me.
@@carloswagner6895 If you have not read it yet, Lara wrote a long post about Broken Vow's story in response to one of Walter's interviews in 2013. I think she deleted it but Lara Fabian Romania on facebook posted it so you can probably find it. This man is full of shit. Lara and Mariah are both multi-talented women fully involved in the creation of their songs.
Her and Walter made some of the best music ever. I honestly don’t know much of his other work with other artists after her. 🤷♂️. Still think the caution issue she had was her being a perfectionist because in the mind of many lambs that’s the best release in years. I must say her voice was prime during the tour. I think the whole era was great. I don’t think chart position defines success like I used to when I was a young boy lol
I hear you, Marky. I think maybe the label took Caution and ran with it once it hit 10 tracks because they wanted an album out before the year was through. Mariah is such a perfectionist she could have sat on it and developed it forever. Sometimes I think she overworks songs and overproduces them. Caution felt a bit more chilled, raw and I love that it broke her usual album rhythm!
How can you trust someone who did not stand beside you when you were shown to be vulnerable? How can that someone leave you standing alone when you've shared colors of artistry? He chose to stand apart from her, and I for one would let him go his own way and keep my distance in my own light.
This honestly makes me sad. It always has. Walter and Mariah had an alchemy that just...was a moment in time. But I know Walter wronged her, and she had to let him go. It is what it is.
She basically did everything and all he did was play the instruments because she can’t read music!!! He’s been getting way too much credit for too many years!!! He gets half of the earning from All I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS when Mariah wrote that song BY HERSELF!!!!!!!
@@irocemrockett1118 As someone who has studied piano and guitar, I wouldn't quite agree. Just "playing the instruments"...PARTICULARLY in the way Mariah works - constantly vocalizing and vocalizing over and over until a musician (Walter) "matches" what she "hears" - is no small feat. I can read music very well, but doing what Walter did, per Mariah's confirmation, is no trivial task.
@@musicworldnow365 "Musicology" trumps "music business" no? By virtue of pure definition, right? Whether Walter complained or not complained is irrelevant. I'm strictly talking about musical composition. To do what he did in the way Mariah describes he did (then and now) to produce some of the biggest records the WORLD (yes, the world) has ever seen is quite a triumph, and I don't even think Walter himself was 50% of that. I think the majority of that is Mariah's voice (#1) and her lyrics (#2), but the musicality of the composition of the songs has to be attributed partially to him. Even she acknowledges that, and I don't think it's fair for us not to no matter what their professional/personal relationship became.
@@tangled55 While that "playing what Mariah hears" happened on many other songs, that was not what happened with All I want For Christmas. All I Want For Christmas was basically hummed into a tape record (the full track with lyrics minus the bridge) and then they finished the whole thing with the added bridge and converting the hum to instruments and music sheets. For any other song they co-wrote, I agree with you.

Should take an interest in what Afansasieff has done outside his work with (for) Carey. He's heavily involved in finding and promoting new talent. He is also a true musician - when it comes to composition. He studied harmony and counterpoint I believe as a college student. Play Afanasieff on the piano, whatever the recording artist, and it always sound like Afanasieff. So that is the give away about who is really doing the heavy lifting on the compositional side. A song like Touch My Body or We Belong Together would never be written by Afanasieff. Where is the heavy lifting in writing music? It is in things like finding the chord progressions. This is not Carey's territory. But this is not to distract from her vocal abilities. Vocal abilities are as important musically as compositional ones. It seems that Afanasieff prefers to write now with top notch lyricists like the Bergmans - even if that is not the stuff that gets you on the Billboard 100. I don't think he's chasing personal fame anymore. I also should say that of course ultimately he was working for Motola and Sony - not Carey, as they were his boss and employer.
Mariah and Walter's feud started because he told Tommy she was going to alienate her fanbase with the direction she was taking on Butterfly and supposedly that she was seeing Jeter. Mariah also supposedly got into it with him at a restaurant and threw ice at him and his companion, a singer named Samantha something.
I am hopeful based on this that they can move past their differences and one day collaborate again, even if just for one more song. They were each other's muses. Both still alive and working, they could still do something amazing.
She implied it in the 1997 MTV Raw interview. She said the situation with Walter is like ‘when you tell a friend a secret and they blab it to the world’ but that could’ve just been an analogy 🤷🏼♂️
Mariah and Walter was like Elton and Bernie, Art and Garfunkel. They did history. Wish they could do more songs together. Tommy was evil in her personal life but from business perspective he was genius
Love your videos! I think she handled the question really well. It would be interesting if she did another collaboration with him since the two of them together is magic, but I think at this point in her career, she and the lambs have a solid body of work from that early 90s era and she’s gone in a pretty different direction musically too, so no need to revisit.
there have been Aclass stellar collaborators but the one constant, usually solo, songwriter and producer has been Mariah. always its been Mariah. love you MC!!!
Mariah is very articulate. She said 'incest'. That is a horrible word. And I'd say Mariah is very polite and well mannered. For her to go 'there', and use that word. It has to be asked what is meant by that?
I agree that he was an amazing partner. However I do dispute the percentage of of credit he seeks, in my opinion he was more of a melody creator for her and perhaps refining lyrical content was more of his input, but to be honest if he was as involved as he claims I don't think he has the arguments to back up what he says. Before she met she had already written amazing songs like Vision of Love or Vanishing, in Emotions álbum Mariah worked with Carole King and her lyrical content had the signature of a Mariah Carey song, very "verbose" incomparable lexicon for songwriter (which is hard to make huge words like she uses for lyrics) what I mean is that she Co wrote many of her songs with many other people and Mariah's musical identity always shine in every album since 1990, so he indeed was a great partner but not as much as he claims to be otherwise Mariah's music wouldn't be as consistent as it is throughout her career. Without him we got ballads like Cry, Camouflage, Angel's Cry, We belong together, Fly like a bird, Mine again, so that how you can tell how much of his input was in every song, which is not as much as he wants to thing otherwise Mariah's discography would be not be cohesive.
I wish they’d work together again! Walter is Russian-Brazilian not that many people know that. His sister is the godmother of one of my best friends in São Paulo, BRAZIL! A lot of Russian Jews and other Eastern European Jews in São Paulo! Anyway! Big hug from Portugaaaaal 😘😘😘
Sometimes I wished Mariah would have a Onika Maraj mouth, say whatever you want to say and don't care or afraid about nobody, but she always says things and hide so much to avoid drama and hurting people, she is just too sweet and innocent for this Industry, and We love her so much but it hurts sometimes . #L4L
Also maybe there was a NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) signed by Mariah, Tommy, Walter etc. so they all have to be careful with what they say to avoid any breach lawsuits?
@@Mel-Kaboom what did she say about those 2 people u mentioned that were so hurtful? Apart from "I don't know her" and " Obsessed "? Can you compare those words with the likes of Onika saying stuffs about people??try again
@@ezrakiiza8024 Let's start with the songs Clown and Obsessed which are about Eminem which she lied about being in a relationship with until he put her on blast in the song The Warning. She has said lots of bad things about J Lo it's not hard to find if you look it up. Her fans know all about it. So no! I will not try again, and I don't even know wtf Onika is.
I think fans need to maybe give this subject a break as well. Most musicians do some of their most popular work within the first few albums, that brought them fandom in the first place. But I feel sometimes that the artist grows, but fandom doesn't. They want the same formula over and over again, which might be great for the fans, but not great for artistic expression. Fans need to get past their own Peter Pan syndrome. She's made it clear she doesn't want to work him, she shouldn't be asked about it repeatedly for the rest of her life. We all need to let it go. Walter included.
That's a good point. I love the music they made together in the 90s but Mariah has moved so far past that. I still enjoy the music today but it is in the past.
Very true and we will always have them. Everything magical happens in a moment in time...it can't be duplicated again and we must move on, but the real magic is when you can always hear it again and feel that moment vividly. Let's be thankful it happened and let's move on
I write like Mariah writes in the fact that I hear the entire song in my head. I’ll present the song lyrically and melodically to a producer and even on my latest project I’m working on I recorded acapella demos of all the songs and sent it to the producer to add music which I also guide them in making to my standards. Do I credit them as a producer in the booklet and credits? Yes. Do I give them songwriting credits? No. They didn’t write the song (lyrics and melody), they are adding accompaniment which I basically coproduce. I’m sure it’s a record label and mainstream music business standard to do so, but is it technically right? Not in my opinion.
@Anne Day Most of those lawsuits was because Mariah didn't properly credit a sample she used. Hero was dismissed twice, cause the guy was just straight up lying. Mariah wrote with Walter, but she also wrote alone and presented producers songs she had already started composing alone.
@Anne Day Walter was apart of it, "Can't Let Go" was about some unknown songwriters not being properly credited for their melodies. During the *Emotions* era, Mariah was sued a lot for not properly crediting melodies she would take inspiration from. Make It Happen was inspired by I Want To Thank You , Emotions was inspired by Best Of My Love & Can't Let Go was inspired by Make It Last Forever and Right Before My Eyes. I think Mariah didn't realize at that point, that you had to credit for taking inspiration from other ppls songs. Mariah Carey DID go to Walter with the idea for Can't Let Go first, and she gave him that melody, a melody she got from Make It Last Forever/Right Before My Eyes, he didn't even know it! Also, she HAS credited him for co-composing the music with her, in 2019, which is VERY recent. She said it in this interview (ruclips.net/video/N_Vhz5BiypU/видео.html - at 5:30 mark). Mariah Carey also stated how she would have to sway Walter in the way of those haunting and melodically soul driven ballads they did. Many of the songs, Walter doesn't even know where Mariah got the inspiration for those melodies. Mariah is a student of music, and loves the 70's and 80's. She got it together by Music Box, and properly credited everything, even if it were just a simple riff like for "I've Been Thinking About You". But again, Mariah would have songs already formed, and would complete them with Walter (or David Cole or Jermaine Dupree or Ben Margulies). The prime example IS Can't Let Go. He didn't know where that R&B melody came from, certainly not from him. He just followed HER lead. But they would also compose songs together without outside influence as well. Which more than likely are songs like "All I've Ever Wanted" or "When I Saw You", songs that Mariah really didn't like, cause it lacked the R&B/Soul flavor she preferred.
@Anne Day Your comment makes no sense. Mariah's story has NEVER changed. She has always stated how she co-composes the music (with usually a writing partner that can play an instrument), and takes the music home and puts lyrics, harmonies and vocal stylings to it. That has *NEVER* changed. And linking you to Mariah Carey stating she co-composed a song with Walter Afanasieff proves your comment is bullshit. In that footage, Mariah is sitting there giving credit to Walter as a co-composer of the music, long after their split. She never changed her story, just didn't fuck with him anymore, so she's not going to talk wonderfully about their relationship anymore, as he was a bitch made submissive ass kisser to Tommy Mottola. But she has NEVER changed her story. She also states she co-composes the music and does her lyrics and vocal productions alone. That's how she works with everyone, whether it be Walter, Jermaine, Ben Margulies, David Cole or even Carole King for *If It's Over.* Her style of writing has never changed. And PS, Walter DID co-compose the song I linked you to in that interview. Stop trying to be right and understand that what you're saying is just some made up bullshit in your own head. Walter co-composed and computerized all the instruments for the song _"All I Want For Christmas Is You"._ So to say I'm linking you to interviews of songs he didn't co-compose is fucking stupid as hell. But I've seen many of your comments, and stupid is what usually spews from em'. 🤦♂️
This won't be popular, but you asked for comments. Firstly, let me say.... I LOVE early Mariah. The 1st decade mostly. That run of singles from 'Vision of Love' to 'My All' are amongst my favourite songs by anyone, ever! 🎶👌 Especially the ballads, where either Walter or Ben Margulies are credited. None of us will ever know how much credit they deserved. I just know that most of my favourites, are from those collaborations. Just my opinion. One of the great voices & composers of all time, in her own right. I just think the quality & consistency of those early years, set a high bar.
I agree. Mariah had to change with the times to stay relevant and she wouldn't be where she is right now w/o shedding Walter and that pop image. Mariah has had like 3 careers with the longevity she has had.
@@itsnoahonfire no she didn't, she finally got to do music she's always wanted. Tommy wanted to keep her "white" and it seems like y'all wanted that as well.
@itsnoahonfire but she didn't. Her music sold less, lost fans etc. Mariah could've stayed doing albums like music box and she would've had more success but that's not the artist she is Rnb and hiphop had always been mariah since day 1.
@@codywalsh2075 Are you blind or slow? She DID. Mariah changed lanes and came out with Butterfly embracing hip hop and dressing in barely there clothing. It was a complete shift in every way to stay relevant. Those pop ballads were out style and she was on to what was trendy and new. She didn't sell as many records because she was past her prime (aging) but had she not shifted gears her career would have ended much sooner. It was a smart move on her part. Whitney even tried it in 1998 with less success.
I was confused as to what she was trying to say in this interview. From past comments, it seems Walter was getting songwriting credit for maybe things he didn't actually contribute writing too. For example, Outside or Looking In. When the songs are so deeply personal and he's listed as co-writer? That is what I understand from what I've heard Mariah say in the past. I actually have no desire for them to work together again because it's clear Mariah doesn't want to. They did great work together that will live on, but it's time to move on.
Mariah's song writing style rely on musician like Walter to play the instrument beside her, and she sing on top on the beat and write lyric and rhythm on it. That's why Walter list as co writer. Its a standard practice. you call in a talent to work with you, you need to give credit. to be fair, if Walter really contribute nothing to the writing process, they won't be working together so long. I believe its also a reason certain ppl don't take Mariah as a songwriter seriously because when you look at Taylor Swift & Prince, you see their song credit solely credit to themself, but for Mariah, its alway involved lot of cowriter. As Mariah said she is grateful for what they did together, end.
@@blurdreamer you really Can't be serious, have you looked through Mariah albums booklets early on? It clearly says In her first 5 albums lyrics written only by Mariah Carey. So I don't get why wouldn't nobody take her serious as a songwriter
Walter definitely contributed to Looking In, the chord progressions are in his style with songs he wrote previously with Mariah. She never got the same sound after she stopped working with him.
I wish Mariah would have spoken about Walter more within Meaning of Mariah Carey. I know she said that only people who were important to her would be featured within the book, but considering how often they worked together, I'm surprised she only mentioned him by name once or twice. You get the _implication_ that he was amongst the Sony-family that looked the other way when Tommy was abusive/violent with her, but it's never stated. I just wanted to hear her side of the story more when it came to those events and when it came to Walter. She said in 97 that they never had professional argument, but had personal ones. We can guess what those are, but setting the record straight would have been nice. Anyway, I'm glad she had some nice things to say here and didn't tiptoe around the topic. She sounded genuine.
Always wished for one reunion for a closure. It's partnership and relationship that last 6 years in the heights of her early success. I'm glad that people that she appreciates ask specifically about him and acknowledge his talent. Don't like that fans Trash Walter. It's their relationship..and creatively he's very important write and producing partner in her early days.
Everyone in the music business knows that whenever they run into Walter in whatever the scenario 20 minutes in the subject of Mariah comes up,and the person talking with Walter will always give themselves the mental eye roll. They made some amazing music together there is no doubt, but Walter is still so hung up on her,he needs to let it go..just recently I read an interview in which he was saying that Mariah didn't give him enough credit for Co -writing All I want for Christmas, like 20 million dollars publishing money since the song was released isn't enough, not forgetting the $$$ for all the money he made from his co-writing everything else with Mariah. Move on already,Mariah has!!! Thanks Matt for the videos, you're doing a great job
@@musicworldnow365Your comment had me 😂😂😂 You are too funny, you are right in that the Lambs should move on,but you know how we get when someone says shit about Mariah..we come to her defense and can be hard with it.
The lambs here requesting Mariah to collaborate again for a new hit?? Seriously, after all that shit?? Mariah's 19 year hit-after-hit career had 12 years without Walter. Non-Walter ballads like Vanishing, Love Takes Time, I Don't Wanna Cry, If it's Over, Melt Away, Never Too Far, Can't Take That Away, Through The Rain, We Belong Together, I Stay In Love, shall I Go On?? Mariah writes the lyrics and comes up with a melody and then Walter helps her on the melody. Mariah doesn't need Walter. More so, she doesn't even need a new hit AT ALL.
@@musicworldnow365 Actually, Walter had no hand in writing any of those songs. I see these a-holes are only the yt conservatives who hated it when Mariah went away from gowns and pop ballads in 1997. They are not even fans tbh.
Leave the music where it is; in the past where we can reach into and enjoy it ❤️ I definitely don't feel the need for them to work together again; I'm just grateful for the music we already have from their time together 😊
Mariah is always gracious and appreciative...Even thru all the BS she still will credit Tommy for his guidance on her early career. She's a very good person. Even if things didn't work out and bad things resulted she still will say they did do this for me or I wouldn't have that if they weren't there. That's how you should handle things. It's very classy. She could smear a bunch of people out to sell a ton of tabloids but she's kept it honest and real. I just love that about her. She's a good role model in that sense.
She really could spell a lot of tea and she said herself that she didn’t go in as hard as she could have in her book. She shows restraint and self-discipline!
@@HeyLamb there's an interview on the idk her thing where she said if someone wants to they would come up introduce themselves and say this is my opinion and what do you think because that's how you handle sh**. And I have remembered it ever since. That is absolutely how it should be! I know it's a meme but in reality when Mariah says I don't know her she means she personally hasn't sat down with the person and had a conversation and felt like she knows what kind of person they are. And there is nothing wrong with that. More people should taje her advice on how to handle those things instead of dragging people thru the mud.
I always wondered who those two people were. The two people who come to mind are Walter Affanasieff and Cory Rooney. He was also a Sony Producer and worked on Babydoll, the Beautiful ones from Butterfly, Last Chance (for Allure, but co-produced with Mariah). After Butterfly, she never worked with either again....
I think Walter sided with Tommy on Mariah's career path. Walter dont want her to do the RnB/Butterfly/sexy path. Let us face it, Mariah's 1st 5 years with strict guidance of Tommy is the best. Music box, Merry Christmas, and Daydream made Mariah a legend. Though, Mariah chose a more RNB path and that made her very free and happy. At the end, Mariah is still successfull. I just love Mariah-Walter collab 🙂
Walter had a career before her and has had a career after her. He is a very talented musician. He has worked with a lot of the great artist of our time, and she was one of them.
"A career" literally only ends at "a career". He NEVER had a successful songwriting career without Mariah. He only co-produced some other hits like My Hearts Will Go On. He had somewhat of a successful career as a co-producer without Mariah but never even an average career as a writer or co-writer without Mariah.
If Mariah would get over the past dramas as well as the narratives she has built up in her head over the years she should collaborate with Walter on her next album. If she did, I think it would be one of her biggest hits in years, well I guess at this point more like decades.
She calls him a 'moment in time'. And Walter 'was' a great writing partner. Matte you said Walters surname perfect 👌🏾 I would love her to work with Walter again more then anyone. But I don't think it'll happen ever and I'm realistic about it. Great video as always X
@@musicworldnow365 Yes I would. In an ideal world I would like him to apologise to her. And for them to have a chat work it out and work together again. However we all know she wouldn't work with him and I don't blame her.
Mariah is truly collaborative as is evident in her multiple collaborations. He was one of the great collaborators of that era. I don’t think it needs to be recreated again. I also think it was too muddied based on his closeness to Tommy. Relationships change and evolve and this is a specific example.
Mariah and Walter's downfall is not as dramatic as people try to make it. I think Mariah felt his loyalties were with the label (which they were he had a publishing deal) and she knew as long as he was in partnership with her and them Tommy could still have and assert control over her creative process. They did some amazing work together and it was big of her to wish him well. Walter doesn't get the credit he deserves and it was nice Mariah gave him props. I do think Walter was being two-faces and reported back to Tommy about her having an affair.
I would LOVE for her to finally speak on her group that she signed, Allure. Mariah’s first act and artist on her label, Crave. There are so many questions like myself that fans have between the ladies of Allure and Mariah.
I get where she's coming from. As a singer/songwriter if you come up with a melody and sing it to someone and they play what you came up with - you technically WROTE that melody...they simply PLAYED it. I've always felt songs should be broken down that way..."Lyrics/Melody by: Mariah -- Instrumentation by: Walter A." -- You can tell by Mariah's arrangements (all the intricate stacks & interwoven parts) that she formulates entire arrangements in her head. There's something more to this, because she ALWAYS gives credit to Jermaine Dupri, DJ Clue, etc. yet she feels strongly about Walter taking credit? 👀👀👀
I still remember the first time I ever saw the can’t let go video. I was 15 years old sick in my bed with the flu. The video was simple but went visually perfect with the song. Watching her with her hair up in a bun in that beautiful black and white scene I will never forget it. I still can’t believe it’s been almost 30 years since it was first released. When I listen to her #1s compilation album and see it missing from the track list due to her ex husband Matola I still get 😡😡😡
i think tommy was the person that mariah and walter parted. my guess it that when mariah divorced tommy, tommy basically said to walter either me or her, walter chose tommy. i think that's how it went down.
For me he's a backstabber he just couldn't appreciate Mariah and was blind enough to not see the good chemistry professionally speaking they had before. Sadly, because I love all the songs they wrote together in the past
Since walter has ties to Tommy, I think Mariah would have stopped working with Walter anyway, whether he had betrayed her or not. But, knowing what we do about Tommy and how he tried to foil Mariah after she divorced him and left him. The whole jlo saga, him messing with her other projects like glitter, yeah, she needed to cut ties with anyone who was under Tommy's influence. And if Walter did report back to Tommy, and if Walter was one of the guys at the kitchen table when Tommy did the knife to her face, then yeah, Mariah is right not to deal with Walter anymore. And the songwriting, they had some great songs, but Mariah is the artist and the lyricist. She thinks of the melodies. He's more of a musician. So I dont think he needs a ton of credit. If you look at Mariah's albums and look at the song credits, she lists everyone who worked on the songs. So she is not afraid to give credit when it's due. As far as Mariah not liking Walter to work with Celine, maybe she was afraid her ideas would find their way onto someone else's project. I think Mariah has demonstrated that she is cool with other talented women. But when she knows they are a risk to her work or someone that has f'd her over in some way then she doesn't mess with them. Very reasonable if you ask me.
He co-wrote most oh her mega hits I wish she would actually acknowledge that he is an amazing song writer. He says she was jealous because he was stuck at Columbia and had to write for other people and she wanted him all to herself.
I think he broke her trust somehow and that was it for them. I would say Mariah is a forgiving person, look at her family history, but this was personal and proffessional so she can choose whom to work with. It is sad because the did magic together....
Well, I don't see any big problem with that. I think their collaborations are wonderful. Mariah wrote great songs & Walter made great music also co-produced. They both have made very nice songs. I lov the songs they made together along 6 albums
It must have been a great feeling for Mimi when We Belong Together hit #1 proving Walter and Mottola that she can make it without them.
Mariah had plenty of #1s without Walter: Vision of love, someday, IDWC, LTT, Emotions, Fantasy, Always be my baby, Honey, Heartbreaker, thank god I found you (in the 90s). Wbt, dfau, tmb in the 00s
I was in 7th grade when The Emancipation of Mimi came out and We belong together was all over the radio at the time
@random stan twitter never happen.😂
We belong together is the number one song of the decade on the 2000s
"WBT' is a great song, but not entirely original. Several other writers are credited because of the 2 samples.
Mariah has stated in the 1997 MTV interview “you know when you tell a friend a secret and they blab it to the world”
Mariah wrote “My All” “Fourth Of July” “Butterfly” “Whenever You Call” “Lead The Way” with him during that separation period.
Babyface, Puffy, Rooney, David Morales, Jermaine are other co-writers of Mariah
that work with many other artists as well.
And Mariah literally don’t give a shit if they do because she knows she’s naturally gifted with songwriting and the melodies that’s revealed to her by the Almighty can never be duplicated or copied.

Walter did her dirty.
While she continued to have enormous success without him.
And he’s bitter about it.

Same story.
Her Best work was cowritten by Walter A.

Yes. It's the first time she mentions the song. I love the breakdown at the end. It's very "Always in Love", another song she co-wrote for Trey.
It's my favorite Mariah song too! Glad to know others appreciate it.
That’s what she was talking about in that interview, that she can’t express it due to her not knowing how to write music but she knows how it sounds so walter plays for her until she says “okay thats what i want” and walter again takes credit automatically, Walter basically confirms my theory because in a 2018 interview he said mariah doesn’t like to share credit with people
Exactly
Because Mariah references Tommy’s friends being there, and not saying a word and not protecting her like they have should I guess
era ele mesmo
He was there, he is not innocent.!

From listening to a 1997 interview Mariah did with Tabitha from MTV, I got the sense that when writing 'My All' with Walter, he may have reported back to Tommy about Mariah's romance with Derek Jeter and their song writing partnership ended then.

Ooh thank you so much for your comment! Very educational!! 😀❤️

I completely agree with this!

@@thekey1313 thats a really good way of putting it. I completely agree
@@musicworldnow365 Didn’t Mariah go to a Barbra Streisand Concert though? And she’s got quite a close working relationship with Walter?
I'm completely co-signing on this comment in full 😎 👍
"Can't Let Go" is my favorite Mariah song.
Exactly !!! He’s only piping up again since it has become a legendary song
I had somewhat noticed that too!

With all their history and their uneasy ending. I always appreciate their admiration for each other and how they speak on their time together.
All Walter has to do is to apologize to Mariah and come clean for ditching and snitching on her, that's all, if you know you will know what I mean by that, Mariah knows this and Walter knows this too,
If he continues to play a victim and saying bad things about Mariah here and there then he keeps reducing his chance of having at least some works on his remaining life, we and Mariah knows how great of a piano player he is and that ear is gifted, and we also know Mariah is the only partner he will ever be associated with, so he has to swallow his pride ( or should I say "stop worrying about Tommy") and just come clean and say sorry to our sister,
You know what, the night Mariah was talking about at the dinner table on her memoir, where Tommy held a knife to her cheek Walter was there too?? Walter, now you can see how close of a bond that was,
He is at fault to the core, after him and what he did, Mariah never trusted anyone from there on, sometimes I wished Trey would know how to play piano like Walter, coz i think he is the only person that stayed loyal to Queen Mariah to this day, God bless you Trey.
So Walter, if you are out of work, you know what to do, and also I feel like the diva thing makes people thinks of Mariah as difficult but I think Mariah is the sweetest person on earth, you just have to be real around her, mariah hasnt said a lot of stuffs through out her career about so many things and so many people to avoid hurting people, she a sweetheart,
Mariah don't need nobody to stay relevant, its just God, herself and a pen, she can do her songs a capella and it would still sell, they needs her, and that's why, even Walter when he thought he was right to do mariah like that around that time she needed her , he hasn't worked on anything with anyone memorable to this day, Mariah has gone on to have a tremendously best and bigger career after him,
I can go on but I'm tired of him, let the ship sail.
My FAVS from them are “Till the end of time”, Can’t Let Go!!!!!’, “Music Box” and “All I ever Wanted”

Walter may have helped Mariah with a few of her hits but Mariah did her best work with Jermaine Dupre. Her and JD were always a force together

Mariah wrote the lyrics. Walter helped with the music. She wrote the sole lyrics for her 4 full albums that he was apart of. Not taking away from his production, but this narrative of him contributing to the lyrics she already had. No. She would have the melodies, the lyrics already presented. Look on Wikipedia of if you own her
albums its hard me to believe a lamb wouldnt see on the linear notes that she's the sole writer for the Lyrics.
She's not the greatest.. That would be Stevie Wonder.
Undeniably this made into a realization that most of the favorite numbers and majority are ballads are by this combo!
Very interesting, thank you for that!
Years ago I heard Walter was spying on Mariah on behalf of Tommy. After reading the book, it totally makes sense.
Would loved to have seen Mariah through ice at him, pity it wasn't a steak knife.
Oh how I miss the 90s!!!
I am hopeful based on this that they can move past their differences and one day collaborate again, even if just for one more song. They were each other's muses. Both still alive and working, they could still do something amazing.
I don’t remember Mariah ever referred to Walter as “friend” even when they were still working together back then.
She implied it in the 1997 MTV Raw interview. She said the situation with Walter is like ‘when you tell a friend a secret and they blab it to the world’ but that could’ve just been an analogy 🤷🏼♂️

Love your videos! I think she handled the question really well. It would be interesting if she did another collaboration with him since the two of them together is magic, but I think at this point in her career, she and the lambs have a solid body of work from that early 90s era and she’s gone in a pretty different direction musically too, so no need to revisit.
Thank you so much, William. Appreciate the support!
there have been Aclass stellar collaborators but the one constant, usually solo, songwriter and producer has been Mariah. always its been Mariah. love you MC!!!
Ah, I didn't realise that about him. Thank you for bringing that to my attention 😊
I'm going to add, that Walter wasn't just reporting back to Tommy. Walter, was also trying to keep Mariah creativity, down by orders.

Unless it Eminem or J Lo
Also maybe there was a NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) signed by Mariah, Tommy, Walter etc. so they all have to be careful with what they say to avoid any breach lawsuits?
@@Mel-Kaboom what did she say about those 2 people u mentioned that were so hurtful? Apart from "I don't know her" and " Obsessed "? Can you compare those words with the likes of Onika saying stuffs about people??try again
@@music4lifemd I think this could be it, may be,
@@ezrakiiza8024 Let's start with the songs Clown and Obsessed which are about Eminem which she lied about being in a relationship with until he put her on blast in the song The Warning. She has said lots of bad things about J Lo it's not hard to find if you look it up. Her fans know all about it. So no! I will not try again, and I don't even know wtf Onika is.
oh that part of the interview told me so so much
It was interesting because it was a random and blunt question. No avoiding it or side stepping. She handled it well.
3:35 “I just know how to hear it” couldn’t relate more Or put in better words, when I’m jamming/practising with other musicians.
Now, be careful with the likes of Walter, Tommy and Ben in the industry and businesses u are about to enter professionally , God bless u.
@@ezrakiiza8024 I will take that to heart. Thank you.
They should definitely work together again
@@codywalsh2075 Like I said she changed with the times to stay relevant
@@blurdreamer Dude Mariah was recently named to the Songwriters Hall Of Fame so someone (important) takes her seriously as a songwriter.
Walter definitely contributed to Looking In, the chord progressions are in his style with songs he wrote previously with Mariah. She never got the same sound after she stopped working with him.
@@artemussarjev The music yes. But lyrics and melody I think that was all Mariah. I know 100% of the lyrics was her
I wish Mariah would have spoken about Walter more within Meaning of Mariah Carey.
Thanks for your comments, Nick, and thank you for your support 🥂❤️
@@amylapratt8964 It was about Demi, when she said that ...
Walter did co-produce My Heart Will Go On...
That's also cause David Foster really didn't want to do the entire production. Foster said he hated that song lol
The only time I have heard Mariah sing just a snippet of my favourite ballad of hers... Till the end of time.
Yes!
Oh man this is unfortunate 😞 well at least now we have some clarity. thanks a lot!! 😘😘
I really hope they work together again. Her Best work was with Walter A.
Walter had a career before her and has had a career after her. He is a very talented musician. He has worked with a lot of the great artist of our time, and she was one of them.
Only difference is, Mariah continued to get #1 hits after him.
No Beautiful was at #15 in 2013 so yes years
She calls him a 'moment in time'. And Walter 'was' a great writing partner. Matte you said Walters surname perfect 👌🏾

Awesome, thank you!
I have always been so curious about this subject
Mariah is truly collaborative as is evident in her multiple collaborations. He was one of the great collaborators of that era. I don’t think it needs to be recreated again. I also think it was too muddied based on his closeness to Tommy. Relationships change and evolve and this is a specific example.
I agree. It’s in the past and I’m glad we have the music.
Why the comment section become trashing Walter Afanasieff ? They work magic together in the past.
Because this video is watched by her fans, Walter doesn't have any rabid followers so people won't just go and defend him for no reason
I wish they would get back together and create an album again.
After hearing the butter knife to her cheek story... and how he did nothing to stand up for her is really scary.
I AM FREE - Mariah Carey 👍👍👍👍👍 Go check the climax at the end.
Some great thoughts there!
When Mariah needed support the most he stayed with Motorolla. She disclaims him since and rightfully so
Well, I don't see any big problem with that. I think their collaborations are wonderful. Mariah wrote great songs & Walter made great music also co-produced. They both have made very nice songs. I lov the songs they made together along 6 albums
Walter probably felt obligated to run to Tommy since he was working with Sony; he was possibly under contract with the label.
