Ransom in a Minute: "A Wild Plaint" by writer and poet Fenton Johnson

The unpublished manuscript titled “A Wild Plaint” (1909) are two journals which appear to document the final months of a young African American man living in Chicago. Although written under the pseudonym “Aubrey Gray,” the authorship is confirmed as that of Fenton Johnson. The work offers a vivid description of discrimination in the urban north, and the United States more broadly, in the early twentieth century.
