    I have an 2010 S80 and my check engine light came on yesterday. I understand wanting to turn it off but shouldn’t I bring it first to the dealership to find out if anything is really wrong with it. I am guessing the light wouldn’t just come on for no reason. Right?

      Engine light is like when you are are having a headache. The real reason for the headache can be cancer or just the lack of enough water. So as the pain killer will make your headache go away I don’t think it will make the cancer go away. Just same as engine light.

    For future reference, you only have to unplug one of the battery terminals. You loose power whether the positive or negative is removed.
    You may also be able to just pull the fuse for the ECU.

    • @2manycatsforadime

      check engine light is really a service indicator on Volvo. Once the service light comes on and you fail to reset it then the check engine light comes on because you missed the service. Service does not tell you that anything is wrong however the code will tell you. The check engine light is telling you to run a diagnostic and it could be tricked because the service light was ignored.

      I worked on volvo for over 25 years but now do it as a hobby.
      Here is the fix.
      There is a hose that is attached to the evap canister and valve that is cracked. They all do. It is about 9 inches long with a hooked end.
      The canister is located above the rear sub frame of the car directly in the middle.
      Remove the right rear wheel and look straight through the gap and the one end of the hose can be seen attached to the canister.
      Replace the hose and that will solve that evap leak problem
      Not too much of a difficult job

    • @vbcproductions7816
      @vbcproductions7816 8 лет назад +2

      +Atanas Dimitrov 12 years Volvo certified master mechanic.... what education do you have? The ABS module will fail triggering all sorts of cluster failure, it doesnt always throw the the ABS light until it becomes more of an advanced issue that requires full repair or replacement. It is THE most common problem in the S and V models, it has to do with mounting of the module, heat soak compromised the solders in the mapping of the board and eventually the movement from where its mounted causes the weakened solder to break free from a solid and connected point. once those soldering points break, electricity does not properly flow through the map causing it to be sent to areas that arent properly equipped to handle much more than what is required to make them run properly. Again, not always throwing the ABS light, because the mapping gets thrown off and sends it elsewhere, hence the cluster issues. Its cool though, I dont need your opinion to validate my certification and expertise.

I will check that with OBD AND TORQUE PAID VERSION FOR THE CODES IF FAULT WILL COME UP AGAIN also do not listen other smart ass bustards who think you can damage ECU or other modules if it's a fault with a car definitely somewhere fault will come up again so you have to reset this via software.

    • @Dhagen6278
      @Dhagen6278 8 лет назад +1

      This is not good advice, it does nothing to fix any problem, any time. Sure it "works" most of the time, but only until the fault shows up again. If you have a code for a bad ignition coil, this light will come on right when misfiring occurs, which would probably be less than 5 minutes. Your car will not pass emissions because when you pull the power to the ECU it has to go through a series of tests by driving a certain amount of cycles. If you have been working for cars for even a year, you would know that unplugging the battery and discharging the electrical system will clear the codes in most ECUs.I find it interesting how you reply to some comments saying that you serviced Volvos for 25 years, then you reply to another saying that you had your car serviced by someone else, why would someone take their car to someone else if they worked on them for 25 years?

    Don't be stupid. It goes off for 2 days max in EVERY CAR not just the ones he says. It also changes your clock, deletes preset radio stations and anything else you have to set up when the vehicle is new. You are not fixing anything by disconnecting your battery.

  • @Mrscrapiron5

    Leaving aside the fact that there is no reason to do this unless you are trying to rip someone off by being dishonest about the problems with the car before you sell it, which makes you the kind of scumbag that makes the world a worse place to live....
    On a modern, sophisticated European car, it is a really bad idea to pull up to the garage, shut it off and then disconnect the battery 45 seconds later. Some of the modules on my V70 take up to a half hour to shut down and you can really mess something up by pulling the battery cable before they are down.

      Here are a couple important notes straight from the Volvo Service Manual:
      "When the ignition has been switched off, wait at least 5 minutes before cutting the power to the car. This is so that there is sufficient time for information to be stored in the control modules"
      "Warning! The key must be in position 2. No one must be in the car when the battery is connected. This is a safety precaution in case an airbag module activates when the power is connected."
      Also why don't you just reset the light with OBD2??

      +buddywa yes exactly obd2 and torque app is awesome for simple faults like this. but I had mazda 5 diesel 2006 and had loads of faults which I fixed with torque app but I had dpf problem and could not help it had to switch off dpf and remap which gave me extra 35bhp and car was flying.

    If you reset your battery in some cars the computer will tell your alternator to change at a different power, if you were putting a new battery in , it would be getting more power than it needs,? That can burn a battery out in a year, because it still thinks that the battery is about say 4 years old, and thinks it needs more power, because it still thinks the older battery is still in a gives more than needed.

    My v70 ran horbbal for about 100 miles when j did that becau see e all of the modules had reset and the car need to learn it self again I don't recomend doing that because you won't pass smog that same day becasue all the modules would end up I'm Inc mode until they reset. But a obd2 will clear the code with no issue.

    Yeah, you idiots are turning it off for 48 hours tops. In Massachusetts anyway, if you do that to get your inspection sticker, their computer tells them you disconnected your battery recently and they tell you to come back in 48 hours and don't disconnect your battery this time.

    so if you are looking to buy this car, while on a test drive, let the car decelerate at idle rpm. when the rpm gets close to idle, hit the gas. If the trans is faulty, it will turn the light back on. Just so in case this douche bag tries to sell this piece of shit, you can catch him in the act.

    Oh good grief, what have you younger generation have done to the simple combustion engine.
    You don't need computers and lazy man gadgets on it, just strip the emission control system off it and put in real gauges to monitor it instead of idiot lights. Simplified the technology, don't complicate it.
