Hi Melissa!! If you need to join a chain in a circle and do so after chaining the length, the chain will often twist and your subsequent crochet rows will be slightly twisted too. So using a method to ensure the chain remains all up the right way stops that happening.

how are these methods different? the chain is symmettrical, thus front/back is same thing.

Now, how do you single crochet into that starting chain?
Just slip stich to join the chain and single crochet straight into the first chain.
