    @chryco63 The pipes I think you're asking about will be trimmed back and gusseted. There are two reasons I don't fish mouth and fit the center door bar - The bar is farther away from the drivers elbow and the bar can not break free and enter the cockpit when uncut.

  • @jeriellsworth
    @jeriellsworth  14 лет назад

    @shodanxx The clearance is more than the production car interior, because the bars are curved into the door.
    Aluminum racing seats will not deform. One of the worst thing you can have in a race car is the driver staying in one place and having bars move into them. The goal of this will to have the entire cage move under her and she moves with it.
    There will be roll bar padding, which look like water pipe insulation, but made of a foam that rebounds when struck(unlike water pipe foam).

    At first I was "meh," then I was "huh," then I was "whoa." That is going to a very seriously strong roll cage. Thanks for giving us the bar type at the end, I was going to ask because I couldn't remember if you said it in the first video (with the bumper/front bar).

    (with slack country twang) You got purdy welds on that race car girl!
    I'll defer to your experience but about the offset vertical tubing, I've been under the impression that alignment on on that kind of thing would be better. In home construction it's "stack framing" you can get the same structural integrity with less material. Race cars aren't houses but I would think some of the same principals could. Regardless of my opinion it looks good and strong.

  • @jeriellsworth
    @jeriellsworth  14 лет назад

    @neuraxon77 I've seen that design before, but I'm not a fan of the longitudinal strength, because the bars are too vertical (great for front to back strength). This class of car is 3500lbs minimum weight, so side impact is of great concern. Keep watching the videos we have a lot of stiffening members to install.

    Very nice work.. What type of metal is the roll bars? Mild steel or Chromoly? They look to be mild steel. Also if that is the case are you using 25%, 75% argon? Thanks..

  • @jeriellsworth
    @jeriellsworth  14 лет назад

    @zerosomething If I didn't have to deal with metallurgy I could stack the pipes, but without an annealing step it's better to offset them. My mentors drove that into my head from day one. It's ok to weaken a pipe by heating all sides of it if it's not near the driver.

  • @shodanxx
    @shodanxx 14 лет назад

    how much clearance will there be between the driver seat and the roll bar ?
    properly designed seats are designed to deform when the car is rear ended reducing the impact felt by the driver, if there is not enough room this effect is cancelled (of course many(most?) race seat are WAY too strong and don't have this effect), also we put some of those pool foam noodles in strategic places of the car (especially left side of the driver) they have been shown to be very effective at reducing injuries

    @jeriellsworth Makes sense, thanks. Could you possibly take some detailed pictures of what's been done so far and post them on your blog or something? I can understand speeding up the video for the fabrication process, but I'd also like to see the work in detail, simply for reference. Also, any chance that you'd consider compiling this series onto a DVD for sale when you're finished?

  • @shodanxx
    @shodanxx 14 лет назад

    @jeriellsworth
    sorry, I was not clear, I did not mean in the case of broadside collision
    in fact I really like how left hand bars are curved away from the driver, ours are straight because the door still have to work, your design is safer in that way
    I meant in a rear end collision, some OEM seats have a bracket that will deform to a point (until they hit a stop) absorbing some of the energy
    in our car the bucket seat are right up against the roll bar that's the unsafe part

    Are the ends of those bars just butted up to the door jamb? Do you reinforce that area at all? And how come you've stitched together those bars instead of cutting and splicing them into that upright? Just curious. Our cage was a kit, and I'm just enjoying seeing one hand-built. Looking forward to the next videos in the series, Jeri!

  • @zerosomething
    @zerosomething 14 лет назад

    @jeriellsworth AHH that makes sense. It would defeat any extra stability you might get from stacking and create weak points. I should know about annealing, was a silversmith in a former life. I failed to think about that in this context and you probably said something about it in the video that I didn't pay attention to.
