Man, you are incredible, I had that mentality and you just changed it in 3minutes. Thanks for all the awesome info and though and experience you have behind this. Hope I can put it into practice. Hats off to you.
My band is starting to realize this we finally let go enough to put up a demo, because we have decided to start treating Spotify different. We think it makes more sense to have it as unofficial releases and then compiling all the originals that we don't have to pay royalties with and making physical releases we bring out every once and a while.
Good points about Spotify, I also use it for "official releases" and did try to upload some of my exclusive YT releases though struggled with track naming issues that were acceptable to some stores. On YT I release my WIP songs several times as live versions such as "Song XYZ (Third Studio Live Version)" which is named in a way that is acceptable to the distributors stores. Even though you can upload anything, rough material, demos, stuff you post to Socials the distributor upload forms (no names mentioned) is still geared toward, albums, tracks, etc the metadata is geared around traditional album/song releases. It would be way better than piggybacking on track data that Spotify provide a social posting feature where artists can post extra content though until then you are right that we should be maximising Spotify by uploading more content :)
great advice in this one for sure. im always putting demos on bandcamp but itd be sick to make spotify the main focus for everything. always felt weird about mixing official/finished releases with the rest
Little bit unrelated but one to one is the best thing ever! I've started thanking through the DMs all the new people that like my posts or start following me and I've gained around 30 new insta followers that way! Havent tried the Ask yet, unfortunately, but I will now. 😋 And of course this isn't just about followers... they actually connect with me and we both end up feeling good at the end.
Exactly the video I’ve been looking for! It’s too easy to get into playlists with thousands of followers, but how many of those followers are people who just followed the playlist in order to submit their song to the curator? I want to build fans. Not just listeners!
Yep! The game is building your audience, not necessarily building your Spotify streams. You can have 100k streams from a song on one playlist and literally be no further ahead. Focus on your audience and your game plan and you’ll win 👊😊
@@DamianKeyes I'm thinking about recording from home more and putting up demos. Naturally I'm afraid that the quality will go down and that people will unfollow...
This is a great point! I have never thought about using Spotify in this way. Do you think using other music platforms this way could be effective (ie. Apple Music)?
I’m not for quantity over quality. My bottle neck = funding. I spend roughly 1.5k after mix/ master and cover art per song. And that’s before collabs then mixing and mastering etc. so I release every 3-4 months on average
Damo, who gave you the RIGHT to READ ME TO FILTH like that? 😆 I am so guilty of the "spotify is for finished work" mindset. Thank you for bringing me to my senses. I have so much to upload, shit!
Damian Keyes once I finish making this wedding dress for a client (I run a sewing business as one of my many creative jobs) it’s time for operation “get over yourself”
I rarely/never comment but here it goes some damn perspective: It could work and make you famous. But will never make a real artist/star - your "fans" and the industry will take this as desperate act, the quality of your work will flop. Imagine apple all of a sudden releasing everything even prototypes. Why do you want these damn followers so desperately? They will come when you become good. BE SO GOOD THEY CAN'T IGNORE YOU. A true artist creates an if it flops so be it, cause you will make more and more, not for the followers but because it's your nature. I am sorry, but if you are making art and feeling miserable about followers you need some real perspective. Social Media made success more comparable than ever but focus on it too long and any chance of you becoming a real artist will slide off your hands like sand in a desert and you will find yourself surrounded by losers, cause it's the losers game you are so afraid to lose you act desperate. It's not "luck" to be on a playlist, good music is hard to ignore - if you are not on a playlist it's just not good enough for the listener. Period. Accept it. You are not good enough - yet! Good news, you can get better, it's in your hands. Go make more music! Talk about posting at scale, how about doing at scale, improving at scale. Not as a punishment for not being good but because this is the dream, don't you love making music? Why are you wasting time starting a podcast or releasing sh*t, is that really how you want to be known? The artist that only releases sh*t? If Taylor swift stars flooding my Spotify with podcasts and songs that were not at the same level as I "signed up for" you damn bet I will unfollow, not just on Spotify but everywhere - and when she releases the big thing that she spent lots of money on or made a really good partnership I will not be there - its not an effort to sabotage, I simply can't stand the noise. It's just noise. Social Media Marketing is about being loud as often as you can, but care about what you say and how you say it otherwise you are not making music, you are not enjoyable, you are just forcing your way into people's lives - makes you known? yes will you make money? maybe. will that make you the next billie or BTS? never. This is not to Damian, this is to everyone looking to grow online. I am a music artist and my side job is social media strategist.
I agree with you for the most part! I do see a lot of artists with barely listenable content, unmixed or unmastered, or just plain garbage all the way around. Sometimes they are people who have absolutely no stage fright or shyness (which can be good I guess) but they take that trait and get in their home studio and create hot doodoo! These types are the ones who I agree with you in that they don’t need to be looking for followers, but need to improve their talent or lack there of. On the other hand I see Damien here as giving knowledge of how a system works. The skilled musician in my opinion should have enough sense not to release the above said trash lol. As musicians we all have a bunch of stuff we have no intention of sharing. I get the algorithm. And I get the manipulation of it. But where I see some people fail is that they never release their library of great music due to a fear of failing and due to over perfecting projects. To me Damien here is giving knowledge and letting the beholder of it use it how they see fit. The people who are skilled should release their material (of course wisely, not putting out band arguments!) and take advantage of an algorithm that is allowing musicians world wide to skip one of the real impediments which is record companies who are only looking for a certain sound. I think ultimately things will balance themselves out with this type of knowledge. You are so right in saying that one must become so good that people can’t ignore you. One issue that arises is money. Again balance is needed. Getting money and being able to support a family with music has never been more attainable, and tricks like this video help enormously. Of course the gates may get flooded with garbage, but I truly believe that garbage artist will naturally burn themselves out. They don’t have a well of creativity to draw from because they are not true artists. Just my couple of cents lol, I’ll go back to making my weird music. I’m from L.A. and I make Japanese/ English pop music. (I had to take Damiens advice and talk about my music right quick lmao) follow me on Spotify - Jahsua Hahaha!
I think you have a point, but also even if someone may have really good art, and have no way of working with the system, theres a chacne they will not be discovered :/ .... also you are very attractive
It's a real bummer on one hand, polluting the Spotify page, with live versions and half done songs, as opposed to keeping it as an archive for the polished official releases, but I guess times are changing, and we have to catch up. Releasing our first single felt like a real big deal, and now preparing to release the second one feels even more exciting. But I guess a few fillers here and there wouldn't hurt, as long as the album is there once we release it in 18 months or so.
I think what I wanted to get across here was that you’re in charge of what you want to put on Spotify. And it can be utilised to help grow more than it is currently 😊 It’s only polluting it if you feel like you’re polluting it... if you still feel like you’re putting out great content, and it can be categorised how you like, it wouldn’t be polluting 😊 but I do know what you mean as Spotify is like the pinnacle at the moment. But the problem is it’s much harder to grow it if you’re not giving the Spotify algorithm too much to work with 😊
@@DamianKeyes True. I guess a more comforting way to look at it is, even if you look at any of the veteran bands' full discographies, and really dig in, you can usually find countless releases of singles, demos, different versions and live albums. And I'm talking cassette tapes. By the end of the day, bands have always been doing it, it's just that this stuff was always under the radar. But I guess there's no harm in it being on the front page. The casual listener will most likely skip it, but this stuff is made for the true fans anyway, so might as well make it easy for them to find it.

Excellent post damo! Thought provoking and a great reason to start to put some demos on Spotify. Question. Don’t know if you know, but Distrokid has started charging 30% tax on non-US users. Are there any UK based digital distributors that you’d recommend? 👍
Damian - Awesome video! One thing that I think needs to made super clear though is that Spotify DOES NOT give an artist the ability to interact with their followers. They can only see a follower count - There is no way to get their names or interact with them in any way. This is pretty insane considering considering they DO let you see followers in personal accounts. It's apparently the top requested feature to the Spotify for Artist's team for the last year or so....but they haven't taken any action on it. I wonder why? Not sure why they wouldn't want to open this wide up....and get artists to engage more with their fans!
I think the one statement that couldnt be further from the truth is the fact that followers get notifications when the artist drops new music. Its just cap. You might get a quick pop up notification in the app itself but its always about major artists and never indie artists. I dont understand why the external notification function that can clearly be activated in the Spotify settings doesnt work. And its been there for years as well
Hi. Thank you for your video. You mentioned that one can see, who is following as an artist. I can only see it on a personal "listener" profile. Am I blind?
Glad to hear because we just did this! We put a demo up on Spotify because we won't have an opportunity to record properly for a while. Still not that confident in the decision though, because Spotify is where people who aren't looking for you can be passively exposed to you, so you want to make a good first impression. With Bandcamp on the other hand, you'd probably have to already know us to find us there, and while the demo probably wouldn't bring any new fans in, I doubt it'd scare any existing ones away.
How can I see my followers on Spotify to pick a competition winner from them (as you suggest around 8:30 ? As far as I know I cannot see who is following my band on Spotify ?
same question - as of 9/16/20 my email to spotify about that specific feature was answered with, "there is no way to do that". I'd love to be corrected.. Damian?
Hi Damian. I want to copyright and start releasing my musical compositions that are attached to stories that I have also written as well as copyrighting the stories. How should I start? I have no idea about how to start and I'm 16 and in high school.
@Damian Keyes - Re: contest at 8:00 - Am I missing a trick here that I don't know about? I believe your personal account only shows who you are following, but nowhere on Spotify can you see who follows you, on either your personal account or in Spotify for Artists. The closest you can get is to see who put you on a playlist.
On Lauv's last album he put out a demo version of a song. That caught me off guard - I didn't think people would ever release an unfinished version of a track. Especially not someone of his size.
Very interesting.... my question is.. regarding cdbaby.. should I pay for standard or Pro for releasing so much content.. let say a song every other week or month...
I have one question Damian, actually I am EDM type of producer and yeah just started a month ago, my question is I can create single music a week and I love singing too so if I think of singing it takes a month to create a song and I m still learning singing not so perfect in it....my point is where should I focus on signing or only music stuff, I came to this point just bcoz of change in music industry thank you
Hi Damian, you say at 8:00 that you can check your followers on your Spotify page, but those are only the people who follow your personal profile and NOT your Artist followers. If you are uploading music then you get an Artist profile which is connected to your personal profile, but they are different sets of followers. You cannot (at the moment) see the names/ profiles of people following your Artist page, not even on Spotify for Artists. Since these are the ones that matter for an Artist, it's actually a big deal and one of the things I hate about that crappy back-end. It also makes it impossible for you to reach out to your audience UNLESS you put up some kind of blog post. Would seem a bit odd though to say 'we don't know who you are, so send us an email to let us know that you follow us'.
Totally agree with you on the idea of producing more content to adapt to the modern landscape. Also really like the idea of Spotify as a social platform too. I find the negative reaction to Daniel Eks speech the other day really odd. I've always found the 'traditional' model of the 2 year album cycle really restrictive. The idea of smashing stuff out as and when I want is super liberating. I think people forget that the 2 year album cycle is a recent development and not sacrosanct. If you go back before recorded music, sheet music and hall tunes were the main form of popular music. These were produced anf released fast. In the middle ages it was travelling bards that had to make up new songs constantly to stay relevant and keep working. The oldest musical instrument is 30'000 years old. I'm pretty sure that who ever made and played it didn't do it every two years. The 'traditional' 2 year cycle is therefore a very young and brief style of music consumption that is in the process of being superceded. I'm super excited for this new way of producing music and the future of music. Any way, ramble /excited rant over, check me out on Spotify as ACRITARCH
Interesting idea. Is there any concern that potential fans will stumble upon these alternate/less polished tracks first and dismiss us as an artist before they hear our "release" quality tracks? I mean, does the old bit of wisdom about "you only get one chance to make a first impression" still apply?
Hey Damo, had the exact same idea about posting demos, commentary etc to my Spotify. Really wanted to upload track commentary but Distrokid doesn't allow me to do that. Any idea on how to work around that?
Distrokid is super nitpicky about uploading music and music only. It's not a very good distributor, unfortunately, even though the price is so hard to beat! Its competitors typically allow you to upload non-music.
@@tidalwave_music I'd recommend CD Baby because it's just a one-time payment to upload content, whereas Tunecore has annual fees that you won't want to continue paying, especially for demos, commentary, and any "extras" that you publish. There might be a smaller distributor out there that's even better for your needs, but CD Baby is a good safe pick. As for how to keep your streaming numbers, if you keep every single piece of metadata the same including ISRC and UPC codes (and refrain from generating NEW codes with your re-uploaded release), everything should automatically carry over. Here's what CD Baby says about it: support.cdbaby.com/hc/en-us/articles/360029584792-Do-you-want-to-switch-distribution-to-CD-Baby- ...And here's a more detailed video about the process: ruclips.net/video/zNNVghu4au8/видео.html The guy in the video got banned from Distrokid for trying to upload non-music, so he can't get into his Distrokid account anymore. If you can still get into your account, you might be able to skip some of the steps in the video (like going to an ISRC search website to get your code). Everything else should be the same. Hope this helps!
Hey man I can’t find my answer anywhere else and it’s really bothering me. When my videos or pictures on Instagram get a lot of views, it is always when my impressions from “profile” (which is in the insights tab for individual posts that lists out impressions for hashtags, profile, home, and other) is the highest or second highest. Can you please explain how this occurs or what I can do to increase my profile impressions with purpose because I wasn’t doing anything differently then and now but no matter what I do, I can’t seem to get those “profile” impressions back🙏🏾
Cam Andrew on Spotify *Indie Rock* I really like the idea of uploaded more stuff to Spotify. Demos, live performances, podcasts even as you mentioned. Do you have any best practices around naming conventions or just how to do this without cluttering things? Or can you link some artists that are actually doing this?
Hi Damian, thanks for the great advice as always. I've noticed that some musicians over the years have maintained a level of mystery and it has worked to their advantage in terms of getting a fan base. Do you think this is still possible nowadays when musicians are often encouraged to constantly promote their music and keep in touch with fans? This isn't a dig, just something that I have noticed! I imagine how the music industry has changed over the years impacts on this necessity. Cheers again.
This is really interesting, because a lot of the musicians who do this were already established before social media took off. The answer is yes you can, but it’s 100x harder than if you utilise social media. Mystery can work, but in the early days you will need a bigger budget to make it happen as if you’re not utilising algorithms, you need to be utilising more paid promotion 😊
Hi there! I really enjoy your videos. You always make some really good points. A couple of thoughts came to mind as I watched today's episode: (1) This particular one came in a timely manner. I had been in the habit of trying to release a song per week. However, literally yesterday, I started thinking that was a bit "overkill" and that Spotify should, indeed, be saved for the more occasional "official" releases while i continue sharing other stuff in something more "casual"...Soundcloud!?! Now you have me re-thinking it all. (2) I notice that many of your videos concentrate on an Instagram/Spotify combo. Is that because there's nothing we can really do to affect the other streaming services? As with other distributors, mine delivers to others and I usually share a Songwhip link to allow people the choice of where to access the music. Should I essentially ignore those others (and the Songwhip approach) and simply provide Spotify links when sharing/announcing new releases? To be honest, I was thinking about how my approach would essentially be "splintering" the audience instead of giving a chance to accumulate numbers in a single streaming service. Mind you, I don't really have much of an audience yet, so my concerns are probably moot at this point. Anyway...I hope my long-winded message helps your algorithm.. lol. Cheers.

Good advice. A question: if you upload a demo/bside/alternate version of a song, does it need to be mixed and mastered? Also if you decide to do a podcast, does it need to be about music or something related to you? Ahh thank you! Means a lot honestly 🙏😊
This should be useful, I'm planning on releasing my first album soon after 2 singles drop and it would be great to get more streams and listeners

Wow! What a brilliant reframing and re-strategizing - “Spotify as a social network for audio”. You’ve convinced me. 🤯👏👏🏽👏

I’m not for quantity over quality. My bottle neck = funding. I spend roughly 1.5k after mix/ master and cover art per song. And that’s before collabs then mixing and mastering etc. so I release every 3-4 months on average

I rarely/never comment but here it goes some damn perspective:
It could work and make you famous.
(I had to take Damiens advice and talk about my music right quick lmao) follow me on Spotify - Jahsua

And it can be utilised to help grow more than it is currently 😊
It’s only polluting it if you feel like you’re polluting it... if you still feel like you’re putting out great content, and it can be categorised how you like, it wouldn’t be polluting 😊 but I do know what you mean as Spotify is like the pinnacle at the moment.

You can engage with your followers on your social media platforms.

Hahah 😂 thank you!
Damian is the best!)
Interesting idea. Is there any concern that potential fans will stumble upon these alternate/less polished tracks first and dismiss us as an artist before they hear our "release" quality tracks? I mean, does the old bit of wisdom about "you only get one chance to make a first impression" still apply?
Looking fresh, man
Thank you 👊😊
Hey Damo, had the exact same idea about posting demos, commentary etc to my Spotify.
@@jerryachtermann6399 hmmm, anyone you'd recommend? Problem is can I transfer my whole catalogue to another distributor and not lose the streams?
@@tidalwave_music I'd recommend CD Baby because it's just a one-time payment to upload content, whereas Tunecore has annual fees that you won't want to continue paying, especially for demos, commentary, and any "extras" that you publish. There might be a smaller distributor out there that's even better for your needs, but CD Baby is a good safe pick.
As for how to keep your streaming numbers, if you keep every single piece of metadata the same including ISRC and UPC codes (and refrain from generating NEW codes with your re-uploaded release), everything should automatically carry over. Here's what CD Baby says about it: support.cdbaby.com/hc/en-us/articles/360029584792-Do-you-want-to-switch-distribution-to-CD-Baby-
...And here's a more detailed video about the process: ruclips.net/video/zNNVghu4au8/видео.html
The guy in the video got banned from Distrokid for trying to upload non-music, so he can't get into his Distrokid account anymore. If you can still get into your account, you might be able to skip some of the steps in the video (like going to an ISRC search website to get your code). Everything else should be the same. Hope this helps!

Anyway...I hope my long-winded message helps your algorithm.. lol. Cheers.
