Kazakh and Russian language come from completely different families of languages. However, we speak them both. It's crazy right? During colonial period there were a lot of harsh things that happened to Kazakhs. Since 1991 we are independent country and that's the reason why ninety one is called like that. People who don't really understand politics tent to get offended if someone mistooks Kazakh as Russian because of the historical hate. But even though we are independent, we still share borders with two of the most powerful states. Russia and China. We don't have the same impact in the world as these two. And this is the reason why we should be in really good relations with Russia or China will absorb us)
