I an Catholic and believe in a God, but my moral code is based on my intellect and not some book written over 1000 yrs ago. Thus a person can be both religious and a Humanist.
I finally come across an individual that thinks in the same light as me. I am free from religion, and I feel liberated. Humanism is awesome for sure. I want to meet A C Grayling.
In the past I have heard discussion around the premise that morality either is individually subjective or collectively objective. Professor Grayling's point on inter-subjectivity, where we steer morality through group discussion and feedback, is very interesting. Excellent interview David, I would like to hear more!
He bored the hell out of me to the point when I asked myself wtf are you listening too and there you go 1/3 in and my brain shut down......maybe the sound in the background was putting me to sleep or better yet I was being hypnotized.....Lol.
As an FYI to anyone who will get confused by this guys way of defining "Humanism" it has NOTHING to do with whether you are religious or not. Assuming in any way shape or form that being religious and humanist conflict in the least way is inaccurate.
"...non-atheists, agnostics perhaps..." I expected better from Prof Grayling, these two terms _are_ _not_ _mutually_ _exclusive_. Agnostic atheism is a thing, a big thing.
The way he describes the difference between ethics and morals sounds completely backwards. The way I understand it, ethics are rules or expectations about the interactions between individuals within a group or a society. Morals are a person's ideas about how to conduct themselves; they are subjective and ultimately determined by the individual, although they might be influenced by other sources.
WTF is that sound in the background? It was seriously causing me issues with my schizophrenia. That's the EXACT noise I would hear when having breaks and I don't like hearing it at all.......fuck. I'd spend days locked in my apartment terrified of whatever beings are projecting that noise just right outside......bleh...
Grayling (and Sam Harris) don't understand the argument. The argument "atheist morality is arbitrary", is not implying that its random subjective morals, that change all the time. And therefore, "oh tomorrow you might think eating babies is moral". That's not it. The argument is that what Atheists call morality is in actuality personal preferences. And it has nothing to do with morality. Its personal preference, just like some people like to donate to charity, some people want to become doctors to help people, some people don't eat meat because they feel guilty...and some people just don't care. Those kinds of attitudes have nothing to do with morality, even though some people incorrectly use moral language in describing them, they are Amoral personal preferences. Grayling or Sam Harris don't recognize the difference between Amorality and Immorality is the bottomline. And must have never heard of moral skepticism, or nihilism.
well spoken guest who answered queries directly. Impressive for such a short interview.
I swear to God this guy speaks through poetry.
the clicking noise in the background is bringing back flashbacks from the grudge movies
+Alias Fakename You and I are the only ones who can hear it actually, we're fucked.

Kind of sounds like a Xenomorph from Aliens.

RT has already covered the shoot-out in Oregon. I'm waiting David...
What is that creature sleeping in this Professor's office?
This video would be a lot better without the Kid from the Grudge in the background.
Hahahah.
Common sense
"...non-atheists, agnostics perhaps..."

Gentlemen.
There is no morality within any religion
Don't pray to any of the three gods for me, justice, peace, food for all/etc; for they might hear you and get meaner and madder than they already are!

people created the religion - therefore people created the morality even if religion is the source of it (I don't agree with that though)
What the fuck is that sound? it sounds like a baseball card in a bike wheel
I think that the world would be better without religion
Can't take that ticking noise. Sounds like dolphin-speak.

.
Underwhelming interview, this philosopher was just stroking his ego and going off on tangents rather than answering any of the questions.
1st
How does Pakman hook up with philosophy professors?
Lol
