    As a gymnast for 9 years, who just thankfully got the heck out of there, the coach is scarily accurate. “Winning is your number one priority. Nothing else matters” I swear I have heard more than one gymnastics coach tell me this. Gymnastics is an absolutely brutal sport, and no one understands that. To be a gymnast, you must be in incredible physical shape, mentally strong to endure the verbal abuse, and have the perseverance to get back up a hundred times. Gymnastics is much more than being able to jump really high or flip on a trampoline, it is mentally and emotionally draining. I was never fat shamed, though I do know gymnasts who were and my heart goes out to them, my problem was with constantly getting torn down. Every time I got a correction, I heard that I wasn’t good enough, and still to this day, I have huge problems with my self confidence. I was basically set up to fail and I felt incredibly inferior, a feeling which I still carry with me. I began having horrible stomach cramps at the age of 5 because I was terrified of my coches and didn’t want to go to practice. I have developed depression and anxiety and a horrible self image because of gymnastics. Which I guess is why I get so angry when someone says “gymnastics isn’t a sport” or “gymnastics is so easy” or “I mean it’s all presentation”(yes someone said that to me). Anyway, all other struggling gymnasts out there, keep your head up, you are so much stronger than you realize. And thank you so much Dhar for recognizing the hardships of this sport❤️

      Yeah, there is a difference between starving yourself and maintaining a healthy diet.
      Your body needs proper nutrition to help it function properly. No food in your system is just as unhealthy as lots of junk food in your system.

    • @j-m0n3y89
      @j-m0n3y89 2 года назад +6

      I have to strongly agree with that statement. Junk food is better than no food, but if u are a gymnast trying to lose weight, I recommend eating salads with grilled chicken and maybe even other fruits and veggies. I will usually eat meals like this frequently, and even if I do eat junk food, one thing that I almost always do is try to get diet sodas whenever I can to limit my calorie intake and my sugar intake. Sorry tmi😅😅😅

    My coach also tears us down, but not to the extent of this. He just yells at everyone and makes inappropriate remarks or jokes. He harasses other coaches and demands things from the authorities. Little kids start crying because of him and some of them get hurt because he pushes them to do something they’re not ready for. He’s the toughest on me and I just make smartass remarks back.
    One time, I said school was more important than gymnastics and he said that it wasn’t. I said, “Well, at least I know more math than you” and everyone started laughing, including the other coaches.

    As a gymnast,
    You should NEVER starve yourself. There is a girl on my team who gets discouraged because of her weight but gets AWESOME scores. And my coach is just like the blue teams coach, she is one of the best coaches ever. She makes sure we eat before (and have time for our food to settle) and after (if we need to) because she used to have a coach like coach toolan. So for anyone, don’t worry about your weight because you can achieve anything u put your heart and mind to. ❤️💙

      especially because weight = entire body composition, and someone's weight can be exactly the same before and after they meet their fitness goal. because their body composition shifted around to be high in muscle. building your strength is what training is mostly about, and so "weight loss" shouldn't really even enter the picture.

In one of my classes, the “heaviest” girl was actually the best in the class, and other “smaller” kids in the class were not quite as advanced and they had been attending gymnastics longer. This video reminds me of two separate indents in my life:
    1. When I was 8, I took gymnastics for fun (along with tap & jazz). It was co-taught by a husband and wife, however I ended up quitting. Because one my body started to hurt and two, I did not like her husband raising his voice at me because I couldn't "keep my hands straight" whenever I did cartwheels.
    2. When I was 13, years old I stopped eating. Not because I wanted to lose weight but because I hated the cafeteria food that they served (I ate when I got home). It was nasty and one time in kindergarten I got food poisoning from it. One day after I skipped lunch I got really dizzy, my head was hurting, and I couldn't see (apparently my eyes were crossing). I got my sight back after I took a little nap in the nurse's office. They called my cousin to pick me up and we got some food.

I remember once getting a new skill that the rest of my team had already gotten, and I raised my arms and cheered in excitement. The coach just looked at me and said “finally! now it’s time to work on the next skill. You are so behind the rest of your team moved on a long time ago”. I may have had a mild case of strabismus (aka crossed-eyes), one way to get it is stress. At the time I was dealing with bulles, and a history paper that was due. So that maybe one cause. Another cause could be that I had a mini stroke, which can happen if you don't eat properly (not indirectly though).
      Even the principal at the time thought I was faking (the nurse needed up with my emergency contact info). She had me close my eyes then open them again, it didn't work.

    Ok, it's actually been said by scientists that when you don't eat, your body will actually produce fat on it's own so the body can be fueled in some way, and when you're using your body in an active way, such as gymnastics, dance or basketball or any sport, it can put lots of pressure on your body and eating strengthens you in that activity and can help you immensely.

As a ballet dancer and working out, exercising, I really think you should continue eating because eating gives us strength for not only ballet, but for many sport activities just like gymnastics. Exercising gives us muscles, but exercise always requires strength. When I was in third grade in music class, we were playing a game outside and we were running around singing. I slipped on the grass. It was rainy and the teacher. The teacher asked me am I all right and I said yeah and she said OK and then she told the whole class be careful what you’re running you might fall And then I stood up on the concrete and I started feeling dizzy. I couldn’t see my eyes were all blurred up and I was I was breathing heavily. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack but i was exaggerating and remider i was in third grade so it was bad and I’m on the concrete and the grass is like at least a foot below me and I just fall forward And the music teacher turned me to be on my back to see if I was ok and my eyes rolled all the way back. It was three seconds right but for me like 10 hour and whenever you faint you have a story going on in your head, I had nightmare i think it was something coming to eat me so it was kind of weird but yeah I had a nightmare and it felt like 10 hours. It was only three or four seconds and whenever I got to nurse I had some Cheez-Its and I felt all better so I mean, I think it’s because I didn’t eat breakfast so yea.

    Dhar Mann, this is a great video right here. Unfortunately, this happens in real life and it needs to stop. Coaches, things are more important than medals and winning. I like Coach Rothman, she has more common sense than the other coach. Remember, we are not just telling stories, we're changing lives. Thank you for sharing and have a great day!
