The poverty, the hustling, the everyday struggles, the loan shark, the unfair gold boss, the unfair guy with the gold smelter and then you see their smiles, hear their laughter see them in their fun days just playing cricket and their lives just go on living on hope and faith that one day I'll make it big and get out of here...I wish all them them the very best that life can offer them👏👏👏🙏
Right! Feel the positivity in their faces, that I wish I have.
It is very stressful and survival rate is lesser than most countries.
Get out of here and go where? Ultimately, no one can escape death: not even the comfortable life living people in developed countries (and they know they too are miserable despite comforts and facilities). What happens after death? Ever thought about it?
They are pretending that they are happy. Their smiles are just for the camera.
I wish them the best as long as they stay in their own country

I am an auto mechanic in Huntsville Alabama USA. I have met many young Indian students getting their college education here. I fix their cheap cars, just to last them through school & we've become friends.. The Indian's are among the brightest, most clever & industrious i have ever met. They make ways to overcome obstacles that i could never think of. I'm retiring from cars now but these Indian students have been a delight.

@@harshanand8608 Ya. The people like us who are living in clean environment with modern amenities are fake as per the maker of documentary. I never understood the world who always downgrade India as showing dirty and filthy by visiting slums rather appreciating for its progress and showing good clean area. My recent trip to Chicago, i was fortunate enough to meet an European man who is working in US. He visited Gurgaon and Bangalore and by knowing me as Indian told me that these western people though tell lot of bad things about India but i have seen rising India which almost 99% of the world are not aware of due to such documentary. Infact he told me that he was surprised to see Gurgaon when he visited in 2022 and praised a lot about Indian IT field rising.
Bro what we see in real life is reality. This documentary is 20 years old. It's not like this anywhere in the country. India is doing pretty well.
The story of the young gold digger who broke away from his tyranic boss & landlord to become his own boss, formed his own clan & found a roof over their head deserves a movie. He is so smart & knew he could do better than his boss, treat his own worker better for much better return on investment, find a better buyer, hire a taxi to get there quick. I bet he will rise to the top some day. However, the people surviving on the beach selling alcohol, I feel sorry for them because a solid roof over your head is the first step in the human hierarchy of need without a roof, there's no safety ^ you can't function properly plus selling alcohol which only brings more human misery, is a bad combination.
Everybody Ho is willing to dive in shit. Deserves all his Dreams come true.❤🎉
However, such totally broken structures also produce very clever minds whose cleverness is challenged. In well-ordered societies, such instincts can no longer develop and this often creates a drug problem from which wealthy countries increasingly suffer. Nevertheless, India has collapsed, the fact that everyone is fed is a miracle, nonetheless.

@@NavyaSagittarius So we should gatekeep people's access to educational information just because they're white? Sounds racist. Don't you think it'd be better for them to educate themselves about life in other countries rather than remaining completely oblivious to it?
The fact that Kolkata is one of the poorest cities in the world is the reason it's interesting and important to document, and both Indian and English-speaking filmmakers have made documentaries about it. There just probably aren't as many Indian filmmakers compared to English-speaking ones since the equipment is so expensive, and besides, Indian filmmakers are likely releasing their films in their own country/language anyway.

Desperation, not ignorance. They cannot afford safety gear but must survive despite the hazards. They will probably not live to see a 45th birthday. I don’t laugh my ass off about their situation. I thank God I am not in their shoes.
You should see the ones who literally go down into the sewers to pan for gold!!! The gold workers inevitably inhale some of the gold dust too so it comes out in their poop…. That combined, with just the stuff that makes it’s way down there from the streets above (like where these guys are panning). I saw that documentary a few years ago and I was absolutely HORRIFIED!!! Interestingly the state they are showing is a "Socialist/Communist" state, the more capitalistic states are doing a much better job at uplifting people from poverty.
As an Indian migrant through marriage I have always fallen foul of anyone who praises India. I saw a documentary once where the guys were immersing their entire bodies down in the SEWERS, in literal poop, just for a few specks of gold! I was absolutely HORRIFIED and it made a little muck and sweeping the streets and even the mercury poisoning seem not so bad this time around!
I spent a good portion of my construction career working in sanitation plants. Sure I've been soaked a few times. Never in the way in which this poor guy gets it. Wow, just wow. Sewers can kill in more ways than just the filth.
This is why I’m so grateful for what I have. Because people all over the world are struggling just to get by day by day.
These people are an inspiration
Did anyone else get the irony of the sign on the police truck? "Crime Against women & children & senior citizens Call on..." While they are doing just that exact thing!
we chinese once were poor but I have never see living like this. this pure slum and dirty place. They need to clean up the street , even if you are poor. the health is very important in life.
You chinese are very smart to say no to east indian immigration. They have destroyed every western country they have invaded.
India is overall very diverse from inside The crowd, chaos which you see is just a tiny part of that with the rest of the parts being completely difference For example you can experience a silent forest trek in Himalayan mountains with old buddhist monasteries if you go to Northeast india, you can see a version of Tibet in Ladakh, you can see a natural retreat in the mountain valley in Himachal Pradesh You can experience a typical seaside beach in Goa, you can experience the beauty of tropical backwaters in Kerala and a old European town vibe in the city of Kochi You can be amazed to see the flora and fauna of Ooty a hill station in South India + mountain railway ride in Darjeeling, Himachal Pradesh Moreover you can even experience snowfall in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh Better watch the travel vlogs of India made by american, british youtubers like Ride with Gabi, Those happy days, Dannys Gotta world loose!!!! I guess this is 2014, in the present days more than 11 million new houses are built for the ones who cannot afford. Not many die from hunger, in india we have a worse epidemic of people being not so productive but that's slowly vanishing as basic necessities are available to everyone
This is the real India, an India of hardworking citizens 🫡
Instead of blaming others,we have to make a proper introspection.even after 76 years of independence if we see a lower strata in our society, that shows the failure of our political class.they did not perform their duties well.things can be improved if there is political will.these leaders go to other countries and see the facilities given to their citizens.still they fail to deliver such things to Indian citizens.we think that people are suffering because of their karma or fate. This philosophy is hindering our progress.progress of country is brought about by the development of all citizens.the government must work for that .
Root cause is quality education in India. Once that problem is solved all problems of India will be solved
64* years of independence. This film is from 2011.
That country the people really work hard damn gotta respect there hustle and that looking for gold man
...Inspiring, I like your background music, just right.
For the guy complaining about this documentary, one man's 'shame' is another man's inspiration...
THANK U @Documentary Central for this Documentary
Their level of positivity is superb! A lot I can learn from these people
This was filmed in 2011. Before Modi. Some one should do a follow up documentary on these people again to see how much of upliftment they have had seen since then.
just went here yesterday nothing changed
Yes at least 15+ years old and they are re-uploading it again and again spreading mis-information and propaganda. Things are no more like this.
@@ashutosht10 I just went there yesterday nothing changed

This is Modi’s India shame but truth see what the young do
No, this is the India that Modi inherited from Congress, and is transforming for the better, year after year, with the goal of eradicating poverty by 2050.
this is more than 20 year old documentary
It's extraordinary how they rear children and love their children so much with so little.
I suppose they have the best thing in the world what we all want. To be loved
I had searched " Indian street food" this video popped up.
Awesome work 💯
Very impressive video! Great people with great determination! God bless them!
One of the best documentaries I have watched in a long time - hats off!. I love the individual stories and you really start to feel for the individuals whose life story is on display for the whole world to see. Is there any update on Rajesh's story as well as the book seller? Is there any way to get in touch with them?
This documentory is more than 20 years old😂

It's humbling to see how tough peoples lives can be, but they are still happy and making the best of it. A really enjoyable documentary.
I'm eagerly awaiting your doco "What they don't tell you about life in the USA, UK".
Very sad , a country full of the richest people , advanced in technology , yet their poor suffer . There's money for War and killing innocent people , imagin all those billions spend on saving life's , feed the hungry medcine housing etc Truly it breaks my heart too see this kind of misery
Better watch the travel vlogs of India made by american, british youtubers like Ride with Gabi, Those happy days, Dannys Gotta world loose!!!! There is a lot of propaganda in youtube these days against China, IndiaActually India is the fastest growing economic power currently earlier it was China!!!
Poverty is currently shrinking rapidly as more and more Indians are entering middle class category!
India has the fastest growing middle class and currently India is in its transition phase something which China faced in 1990s, South Korea in 1970s!
Comparing an emerging typical Asian economic powerhouse with a backward Islamic Middle Eastern hellhole is ridiculous
Kolkata is one of the poorest parts of India like Varanasi yet they dont represent that huge country which is very very different on an average!!!!
There is actually majority of the population in middle class category, only 15 percent in poverty
And there are places in India like Kerala, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh which have zero rapes and beautiful nature!!!!
South India, Northeast India are literally safe!!!
They are happy! Happier than many westerners. There is a great novel set in India that talks about this. If you can find it, it's called "Shantaram".
Religion pays a big part, as it always does when there is misery
@@Gerryjournal They are not in misery. The slum life is highly organised and co- operative. There are people living there by choice, even some quite well off. They are happier than many westerners.
What i love most about these documentaries about other countries, no matter how remote they live. Wether its in Villages, tribes, wealthy, whatever, we all are more similar than different. A middle class western, or European family has the same daily struggles within your family. The wife getting mad at the husband for not doing his chores, getting kids ready for school, and kids pestering their busy moms while dad is 5ft away doing nothing. Moms and dads adoring their kids, spoiling them, and wanting the best for them.
this documentary was shot at least 10 years or more back in time... India is changing fast.
It's not changing for the better ! just like the rest of the world.
I agree, I live in one of 100 smart cities promised by Modi 10 years ago near Faridabad Slum , some miles away from GHAZIPUR landfill. Soon India will be 3rd largest economy thanks to increase in our Population..
from a bad sheet-hole to a worse sheet-hole. LOL
Very nice documentary shown. Thanks to feature maker!
Indians remind me a lot of Africans. They take life's challenges with courage, good humour, stoicness and optimism. I am not surprised that a German guy told me that by the 3rd quarter of the 21st century, India will have the largest economy in the world.
Africans are vastly different from Indians
This is one of the best documentaries I've seen in a long time very eye opening stuff
Excellent documentary. Thank you for that!

Don't be sad, we know what we have achieved today
Don't forget, Africa gets a lot of aid from West and China. If not for all the aid, African people would also have lived a life of destitution and hopelessness. Also, population of entire African continent is about the same as population of India. That means, poverty is also concentrated.
@@sansin6250 its the crowds that make for the misery.
@@nmo3148 agree. But population control is hard to implement for many demographic reasons.
