The story of the young gold digger who broke away from his tyranic boss & landlord to become his own boss, formed his own clan & found a roof over their head deserves a movie. He is so smart & knew he could do better than his boss, treat his own worker better for much better return on investment, find a better buyer, hire a taxi to get there quick. I bet he will rise to the top some day. However, the people surviving on the beach selling alcohol, I feel sorry for them because a solid roof over your head is the first step in the human hierarchy of need without a roof, there's no safety ^ you can't function properly plus selling alcohol which only brings more human misery, is a bad combination.

@NavyaSagittarius So we should gatekeep people's access to educational information just because they're white? Sounds racist. Don't you think it'd be better for them to educate themselves about life in other countries rather than remaining completely oblivious to it? The fact that Kolkata is one of the poorest cities in the world is the reason it's interesting and important to document, and both Indian and English-speaking filmmakers have made documentaries about it. There just probably aren't as many Indian filmmakers compared to English-speaking ones since the equipment is so expensive, and besides, Indian filmmakers are likely releasing their films in their own country/language anyway.

It's incredible that these people can survive even though their living conditions are worse than what cockroaches face in Western Europe. The gold digger was so happy with an "apartment" that looked like a sinkhole. Amazing how resilient they are. And it 100% makes you think twice about when you complain for minor inconveniences in life.

@harshanand8608 Ya. The people like us who are living in clean environment with modern amenities are fake as per the maker of documentary. I never understood the world who always downgrade India as showing dirty and filthy by visiting slums rather appreciating for its progress and showing good clean area. My recent trip to Chicago, i was fortunate enough to meet an European man who is working in US. Families in India feel entitled to be financially supported by one member of the family who is successful. Parents also pressure the successful member to fulfil their obligations to the point of gaslighting. My comment is from my first hand experience.

One of the best documentaries I have watched in a long time - hats off!. I love the individual stories and you really start to feel for the individuals whose life story is on display for the whole world to see. Is there any update on Rajesh's story as well as the book seller? Is there any way to get in touch with them?
The peoples shown in this documentary are all heroes. They have an exemplary fighting spirit and have the mental power to keep a smile amidst so many excruciating difficult circumstances. I pray that they succeed in lifting themselves out of poverty. Shame on the Indian elites who either ignore or exploit them. Shame on the so called biggest democracy in the world who can't even give the basic necessities to its own people.
Shame on the western colonisers who looted and maimed our country reducing it to the rubble they portray here ( which is now reduced and occasional ). What they don’t still know is that we are reclaiming our position back and reduced the percent of selective stuff you see in this documentary to only 6% from over 30. Why don’t they make that documentary ?
What about the crop grower who gave ‘advice’ to the man living on beach. Told him, the man’s losses are his profit and they he’s okay with other people suffering as long as he profits.
Interestingly the state they are showing is a "Socialist/Communist" state, the more capitalistic states are doing a much better job at uplifting people from poverty.
As an Indian migrant through marriage I have always fallen foul of anyone who praises India. Modi and his BJP Hindu ideology which is spreading to the UK and other parts of the Western countries must address the root cause of poverty being the Cursed Caste System. The caste system is legitimised and given a seal of approval by all Religious leaders. Our PM Rishi Sunak flaunts his faith and is a Poster Boy for the Hindus.
What i love most about these documentaries about other countries, no matter how remote they live. Wether its in Villages, tribes, wealthy, whatever, we all are more similar than different. A middle class western, or European family has the same daily struggles within your family. The wife getting mad at the husband for not doing his chores, getting kids ready for school, and kids pestering their busy moms while dad is 5ft away doing nothing. Moms and dads adoring their kids, spoiling them, and wanting the best for them.

Instead of blaming others,we have to make a proper introspection.even after 76 years of independence if we see a lower strata in our society, that shows the failure of our political class.they did not perform their duties well.things can be improved if there is political will.these leaders go to other countries and see the facilities given to their citizens.still they fail to deliver such things to Indian citizens.we think that people are suffering because of their karma or fate. This philosophy is hindering our progress.progress of country is brought about by the development of all citizens.the government must work for that .
Root cause is quality education in India. Once that problem is solved all problems of India will be solved
64* years of independence. This film is from 2011.
As if I was watching a fiction! Life has been so harsh but the unity and smile is always there. Much respect and love for these working class from 🇧🇩
I spent a good portion of my construction career working in sanitation plants. Sure I've been soaked a few times. Never in the way in which this poor guy gets it. Wow, just wow. Sewers can kill in more ways than just the filth.
Thank you for the documentary.
'What They Don't Tell You About Life in India'
------------
Is the title meant to be sarcasm? Because what this video shows, is pretty much the image of India, that the western media loves to portray.
I'm proud of my country india..real hustlers are born here....
You achieve nothing while being tense. That woman is a Saint.
Tough times in India makes you realise how easy you have it in Scotland and the stuff you take for granted in life.
Everyone person in the documentary was always full of smiles and trying to make it a better life for themselves even tho it looked like they have nothing
Proud to be Indian 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
I don't think I'd last a day over there. Those people are tougher. Imagine what they could do if they actually had resources.
This is Modi’s India shame but truth see what the young do
No, this is the India that Modi inherited from Congress, and is transforming for the better, year after year, with the goal of eradicating poverty by 2050.
this is more than 20 year old documentary
Indians remind me a lot of Africans. They take life's challenges with courage, good humour, stoicness and optimism. I am not surprised that a German guy told me that by the 3rd quarter of the 21st century, India will have the largest economy in the world.
Africans are vastly different from Indians
Obviously the German guy has no clue what he is talking about.
