I bought “double shorts” from REI that work well. I think they were the Pearl Izumi Canyon. The under layer is similar, with mesh, chamois underwear. One place where this style underwear works great is on an indoor trainer. You don’t need to be modest indoors, and you can stay cool with padding. :) But outdoors in the sun, you definitely want an outer layer.
The new (as of 2ish years ago) head of private brands (basically anything with the Co-Op logo on it) came over from Rivendell; which explains why they're finally starting to get their bike things right (and their plaids right).
Another good, relatively inexpensive liner to check out would be the Versa from Pearl Izumi. It's like a very minimal-padded boxer brief. I like mine so far, and will probably buy another next time Pearl Izumi has a sale. Regular price is around $40, but they email coupon codes every now and then if you're on their email list.
I still love the function/form of lycra cycling shorts. I find that too many layers of clothing voids the effectiveness of the cut-out on my specialized toupe seat. Also if you are new to paded cycling shorts, know that they are all not similar. Some are super thin and others are thick and much denser. Don't give up if you have an ititial bad experince on your first pair. Also some ride up your leg and others stay in the same place the entire ride. I am gonna give the padded briefs a try after watching this video. thanks as always for the video Russ!!
I love these! I have a couple pairs myself! One thing I will say is that after about 8ish months of daily bike messenger work, the foam started to break down and the elastic waist band started to separate from the mesh. But for how cheap and convenient they are it’s not a deal breaker for me, just a little annoying :)
I love the packaging statement. And Iike REI. I like wearing better hiking pants over shorts. The hikers have a wide gusset that doesn’t get as hung up on the horn of the saddle when mounting and dismounting the seat with standing.
I like the REI liner shorts I've used too. I've used their mountain bike shorts with included liners and took out the liners when I got rid of the outer short. The Baleaf liner bibs on Amazon are a good cheap bib IMO, but they have the rubber leg which I don't mind.
Too bad the REI liner doesn't come in a bib shorts version; I find bib shorts to be more comfortable than shorts (assuming the shoulder straps are of appropriate length). Regardless, liners aren't absolutely necessary for broken-in butts and leather saddles; in such cases, one only need ensure that one's underpants doesn't have a seam joint right where the perineum is.
I have a question regarding the Microshift Advent X derailleur: The company has informed me that it doesn't have the same ratio as Shimano 11-speeds, but I'd like an experimental 2nd opinion. I was wondering if you could test it out to find out if it has even just a bit of compatibility. I'm pretty tolerant with a not very perfect shifting and I only wanna change my rear derailleur. I'd appreciate the response. :)
I use liners for commuting because I don't like walking past coworkers in Lycra. The best thing is when its hot wearing these without the over shorts. Though anybody getting close to you will see your arse.
From someone who use to be thin and cycled "golf casual". Go bibs all day if your spare tire is big. I find that I have to pull up my shorts and over-shorts constantly while I'm riding (and golfing, and hiking, and...you get the idea.) It's annoying on the road and downright dangerous on MTB. I gave up on shorts and just wear bibs now. Sorry peoples!
Thank you for sharing your experience on what brings most comfort. Can you please tell me what are bibs exactly, and which brand did you find works well for you? I ask because my tire is also big and it has been challenging to find something that's comfortable. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
Probably an apples-to-apples comparison would be the REI versus Zoic Essential liner, which is the same price point. I've been riding with the Zoic's for six years and they have been a solid liner.
First time on your channel, I like it a lot! Nicely done review. So breathability is a key focus of your review and I agree. What I wonder is how breathable is the product when it’s under another layer during the summertime.? You have to consider that now you have the breathability of shorts as well. Also did you find that certain shorts due to the way the seams are designed could pose a problem when you’re riding your bike?
I'll buy a pair they okay for driving one hour or two hours but the elastic that no good 5.10 and 230 lb I bought large the waist is okay but the bottom to lose
I have about 4 pairs of theblackbibs bibs. I like them a lot, but wish the padding was thinner. Worth the price for sure. They make good stuff. After watching Laura's video, I was interested in trying tri shorts, so liked Russ's reference to the thickness. These might work, but not sure about shorts vs bibs...
Yes, I feel the same. I do notice that women's shorts often have better and more comfortable looking waistbands. They appear that they would roll down as much.
I still haven't figured out why I would want bike shorts, even after riding for years, including multiple 4 hour rides in hot and humid weather. Hmm. Can anyone explain?
I just always buy loose fitting mountain bike shorts. I got some cheap, cheap, cheap loose fitting bike shorts from Amazon and I know they won't last past this summer but I need them as I ride to work. When the cold hits I'm off to REI to see what they have on sale! Also no liners for me, I just have a brooks that is formed to me. I still have to use bike shorts though, I try to ride in levi material but the seams irritate me. Bike shorts are bike shorts for the breathable strip of fabric above the butt crack and to small seams and where the are placed.
Ok I got 1 pair of liner shorts today, went for 7 k ride, and man my ass is soo burned and irritated! Will all bike shorts do this? Donf they supposed to keep uou dry? Or it's maybe my saddle? I'm new and don't know much about it!
Probably a stupid question but will try anyway: do these undershorts (not specifically the REI one) come instead of underwear? I'm riding mainly with loosely fit boxers and hiking trousers, and it's not that comfortable, so looking for a change. Thanks for the super useful videos as always Russ!
Anyone have any good option like the REI liner for EU countries? Been increasing my miles and after an hour or so I'm thinking maybe some proper bike wear could help.
Ive subscribed. On my easy days, I wear a Hawaiian shirt and board shorts and do wear my lycra race bib under board shorts, but they do feel strange. This may be the thing for me. Any other roadies dress down on your Z2 day? I just cannot stand riding slow and being passed unless I look like party pace Bugaloo.
I have been using these regularly for a couple of months now. They are good, light and dry fast. One issue which I have experienced is that : the stitching near the padding is slightly raised. This has given me a rash around my 🍑. Will still recommend if this does not happen with you. Worth the risk for the price I think
I'm a weirdo. I wear Saax Blacksheep boxer short underwear. They have the patented "ball park". Nuff said. And made of wool, they do the job of a wicking pad.
It is a darned shame they stopped building the basic bike shorts with the tan synthetic chamois . They worked and werent like a diaper..........now the thick foam pad is pretty much what you get.
Thanks for the information as someone who is beginning to get serious about cycling, this is exactly what I'm looking for.
For the other Canadians here watching, MEC (the Canadian version of REI) has a great set of budget shorts too and they are great bang for the buck.

REI liner shorts total game-changer for me thank you for your review

I've been using Conation Collective Monarch Merino Wool Off-Road Liner Shorts. Not cheap but well worth the money.
I never liked bibs. Too much trouble
But liners or regular Lycra shorts, underneath some quick drying cargo shorts, work great for me.

How they run on size?
Jun Boo They fit snug, not too tight but tight. So if you’re not a fan of the snug fit size up, although you might get a diaper effect if you do
Isaac Navarro Pamper effect is not good for my mind. Thank you for the input.

I like unpadded lycra boxers as my undershorts. The only drawback is all the weird ads that popup online.

For all the Roadies who find Lycra comfortable but don't want to look like a dork on gravel you can just wear bibs under baggies and it works fine.
Russ - do you have a video on shoes (non road racing shoes), but more in the genre of bikepacking/touring shoes but with clipless ready.
also looking for something like this
I tried these liners, but wow they did not fit me well. I bought the Pearl Izumi liner instead which works great and was around $30-$40
Are you able to provide an affiliate link to the women's pair?
Thanks Russ this is the kind of info I like. Great video.

In general I just prefer bibs to shorts. More comfy without the waistband.
You like having to undress to take a pee?
@@landon5370 That's only a concern to female cyclists? are you?

I just recently bought a pair of shorts from theblackbibs.com and they were very nicely made and very affordable. No labels, no frills.

I usually tell novices to just get a basic pair of bike shorts, then they can use as liners under regular shorts or as bike shorts.
Thanks for this. I'm buying one.
As a not so skinny casual rider I hate a tight waist band. I really appreciate a good set of padded bib shorts.
Yes, I feel the same. I do notice that women's shorts often have better and more comfortable looking waistbands. They appear that they would roll down as much.

Range of motion, everything stays in place (no rubbing which will cause sores over time) and most importantly padding which stays in place.

Party pace?

Perfect timing!
Question why would you want a pocket on a liner short that you wear underneath another pair of pants
If your overshort has shallow pockets it may eject things. The elastic pocket will keep things in place and are easier to access while pedaling.

We need REI Co-op in the UK.
And Australia

Nice 'short' video.
Do they fit true to size?
FWIW I usually wear M in Pearl Izumi and the M in REI was a good fit.
3rd great video on clothing in a row!

"Skin iteration"? Is that like a second skin?
Irritation. Cut me some slack.

Yes.

Meh. Flashing in lycra is the best reason to ride a bike!
Hit dislike by accident lol! I’m sorry. Meant to hit like but your description for casual rider is me.
