Your favorite Android apps, now on Steam Deck.

- So on Friday I released my latest Steam Deck news video. In this video I talked about how Valve might be adding Android app support in Steam using Waydroid. The dataleak showed that Waydroid may soon be included alongside the SteamVR package. What could this mean for us Deck gamers? In the meantime, I figured now would be a good time to explore what Waydroid is capable of!

Thank you so, so much! This is it for me! Being vested heavily into android, this just add infinite value to my steamdeck! I'm beyond happy
Getting android fortnite to work on steamdeck would be a middle finger to epic games, we need it!!
Their Android app has binary blobs that are only compiled for ARM chipsets, so that won't happen. That's why most bigger games won't run on Android x86 / x86-64 hardware (unless you emulate the CPU of course, which is possible with QEMU, but it's slooooooow).
@@wearegeek I think ARM emulation on Waydroid isn't terrible, the plugin installed alongside the installer discussed in the video seems to run fine.
@@wearegeekarm emulation on Waydroid isn't actually that bad, it's pretty good actually.
@@wearegeek there is waydroid/bliss os and you can play arm based games on x86 processors
ARM emulation on X86 android has been a solved problem for years, I had an Asus Zenfone 2 back in the day with an Intel atom chip and apps without X86 variants worked seamlessly.
Shoutout to 10 Minute Steam Deck Gamer who created this SteamOS Waydroid installer. Super chill dude who's helped me with loads of stuff when dual booting with Clover
@@hooky17 hello and thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you find the script useful.
Hi thank you for the shout and the link for the repo. :)
Regarding incompatible apps in Playstore, you can install them via sideload. Example will be Mobile Legends.
I don't care about the games, but I absolutely love the idea of having the basic youtube and other streaming apps on the Steam Deck. There's just something off about the web browser versions for some reason and they're touchscreen optimized anyways
But with web browser versions, you can have adblock.
still not great, but with "cloud services" in emu deck it's already way better
Probably won't work due to DRM.
Waydroid isn't a locked down platform, so I doubt Google's proprietary DRM crap will allow it, if they can help it.
@@spartaninvirginiaFor those of us who pay for no ad streaming services, it would still be nice.
Freetube pretty much does it
My wife is a psychologist, and works from home. She uses WhatsApp's(this is the default Msg/call App in my country, everybody uses) video calling function to assist patients. This weekend I changed her PC, formatted it and installed Linux Mint, went through the entire PC setup process and left it ready to be used. When I went to test everything I discovered that the Whatsapp version for Linux doesn't have any luck with video calls.
At this point I had 3 choices: either install Waydroid and use the Android version, try to install the Windows version via Proton / Wine or format the PC and install Windows.
Guess which one she preferred...
These small inconveniences that unfortunately still keep many people away from Linux.😥
Using WhatsApp for her job as psychologist sounds insane to me but it is what it is.
Don't take take it too hard, you could always attempt to go with a Windows 10/11 IoT LTSC release that comes bloat free at least.
I understand your pain and I agree that Linux doesn't have full compatibility with all apps. But this is an app issue and not a Linux issue. Also, most people use Zoom/Teams/Meet for video chat for video conferencing which works fine on Linux.
We just have to wait for the WhatsApp devs for adding this functionality.
try switch between wayland and xorg, wayland breaks anydesk on ubuntu afaik
steamdeck uses xorg on desktop mode and i have yet to see any application that's not running properly
@@MegaManNeo She uses other Apps too. Meet, zoom, etc...
But here everybody uses Whats for 1 to 1 video call. And normally are the customers that request the app. And it have end to end encryption.
just finished setting it up on mine, it's awesome, it's like having a little android tablet inside your deck, super cool!
Amazing video! Literally watched and finished installing in 5 minutes. Thanks for the content!
I'll be using this to play some of the games that's included in the netflix subscription, thanks for sharing this :D
Man, having android apps is huge. If performance and compatibility are really good SD can act as a tablet, some sort of laptop/desktop and a console, all at the same time!
I appreciate the Plok jamz
Tim Follin did some great work!
Holy crap this worked! This is great stuff man!
Nice Plok OST
Wonderful Guide, I'm doing it side by side
This is very cool! I wish we could have android/Google TV support. Really would love some streaming apps on Steam Deck. Fortnite working would also be awesome
@@Jmastab2 Stremio. Community plugins. You'll see.
Great content!!! 🎉🎉🎉
it seems like waydroid is basically running android in a VM so there may be some backend settings to allocate additional system resources to it .
Since I don't really play Android exclusive games other than Super Mario Run (which is portrait only) and Mario Kart Tour really, I'm probably not in the need for this.
However, the guide makes this look real simple, so thanks a lot! Gonna share with others who might be interested.
@@MegaManNeo play store says tour and run does not work « on your device »
@@atomike84 Keep in mind Google has to verify partner devices to function "flawless" with their Play Services.
What Waydroid essentially is is you installing a custom ROM inside a container.
Obviously the PlayStore will be like ??? about that in some cases, often I figured manual installation of software through adb to do the trick in such cases nonetheless.
At least judging by my older phones which almost all run LineageOS.
I like the idea ❤
Alright you got me when you said Star Wars hunters on steam deck
Excellent shirt, dude
Thank you. It's one of my favorites
I'm loving the Plok soundtrack, go Follins!
OFFICIAL SUPPORT WITH FLESHED OUT EXPERIENCE?!?! LOVE THIS SO MUCH
Using it for streaming apps would be really cool as currently I have special chrome links set up that are full screen modified or something but you can't download with that.
Would be cool if this is leading to a Steam phone, or even just a Steam Store on Android. Epic is already at that point so it would be nice if Valve could cover that ground too, before Epic becomes a big player there. If they did have an Android phone, Epic couldn't really stop you from installing their games at that point. Would be cool to have Android games with Steam achievements and community features. And games that are available on both PC and Android would finally be one purchase. Maybe emulation would eventually get good enough to have x86 games on your phone and ARM games on your x86 Steam PC to complete the whole experience.
Only thing of concern for me is most of Steam's user base is Russian and Chinese and Valve isn't a public company. All that sweet personal phone data going who knows where could be a little scary.
Ok, nexus mods modding coming to the deck AND android apps/games as well?
Looks like SteamDeck is going to be the best option for gaming on the go ^^
Hey Bryant,
Can you create a "Everything on my Steam Deck" video. It will help us a lot.
I'm not sure what this means?

“Why not like that smash button”
Would love for grant to make that his request to hit like because who wouldn't want to hit the smash button?
I laughed at this more than I should have
doesnt install for me comes up with an error. someone has posted on the github issue the same issue i have
I can finally play all my gatchas with hopefully good driver support now 😅
I made an action set that switches to a gamepad layout I didn't know that Steam had one built in by holding the start button.
It could be a newer edition though since I've had my steamed up for almost 2 years.
All steamdecks
@@malikkelly yes all Steam Decks but like an update to Steam OS.
Watching it load up, "huh looks like Lineage... OH It is Lineage!" 😆
Trying waydroid on PopOS. Sometimes I just want to relax at my desk and play lazy android games.
Something that seems to be lacking in steam.
Thanks Gardiner for the sugeestion!
I feel like the right trackpad should be the mouse just because that's what it is on the deck when you hold the steam button. Make the left button a shortcut to the "Home" key from the keyboard and this will open the menu bar (I couldn't get Win+Enter to work, I'm sure you can I just didn't figure it out in the 2 mins I spent on it.)
If I can get the Crunchyroll app to finally work so I can easily download shows for going on trips, I'll be very happy. Tried android emulators and there was always something wrong with that app.
There are a few free to play games on steam that dont work with the steam deck but do have andriod versions, two that come to mind are Tower of Fantasy and Snowbreak. Would be cool if they worked on steamdeck through this as a workaround.
That is dope. But I struggle to think of an android app I would be excited to run on this. I mostly used my phone for emulation SqaureEnix RPGs.
Anyone have any ideas about screen rotation? I'm playing Gakuen idolmaster the game is in vertical so I want to play it in vertical mode but there is also stage live when you want to rotate to horizontal mode, with default waydroid itself locked everything in horizontal screen, so live stage mode becomes very small I can see nothing, because the game tries to rotate in locked horizontal mode waydroid so it's rotate in a rotate. Is there any option to rotate the app manually not locking all apps in horizontal mode?
If valve do what you're saying, I'll buy a steam deck tomorrow.
What android game are you trying to play?
@@chloe-sunshine7 I'm not trying but I like the fact that you can play android games on different platforms you know, and new games that are coming on mobile look incredible.
@@charmingyu5243 I haven't really seen any mobile games that interest me since Infinity Blade. Although, that was only on iOS devices and I don't think it would translate well to Steam Deck ☹️
@@charmingyu5243I’d definitely play cod mobile on the deck if I could’ve
congratulations on your purchase. steamdeck is by far the BEST handheld gaming device ive ever personally owned.
I’ve tried it out and followed the steps exactly - though for some reason I just can’t get internet working on it, It”s even enabled through firewall so I don’t understand, any help?
It is strange not to see a project such as Wine but for Android sandboxing apps.
Android is more complex and it wouldn't be as simple as a WINE wrapper. Android supports more CPU architectures than Windows. So it would also need an ARM emulator.
been thinking about playing warzone mobile on the steamdeck, hopefully there's a way soon
sir can i ask something?
how to drag images/video from deck SSD to waydroid gallery?
I'll probably wait for the Steam OS verson of that but I did try waidroid back, i think last year, and I didn't like how messy the setup was, maybe it has changed since then
I don't really need this to get games running on my Steam Deck (lmao) but to get the everyday apps I had on my tablet running on it.
This is exciting! But... can't get it to connect to the internet after installing. Any advice?
bros got the plok soundtrack in the back
Since getting the Deck, I’ve wanted to have a legitimate way to play Minecraft Bedrock. Java edition runs great, but I want the cross-play multiplayer as well and running the Android version seems like the best way at the moment.
You can already install Minecraft bedrock launcher, which already installs the android version (trust me it works better than it sounds)
There is the Minecraft Bedrock Launcher on Flathub
It basically runs the Android Minecraft natively on Linux through a Wrapper.
@@pazzoeoyou need to buy the game on android tho
@@wethefearless497 I wonder if one day Wine will be able to play that Windows 10 (UWP) version you could get for free in the past…
@@brennanlaurent4748 as well as cant play the latest version i believe
I play android games like Deemo and rhythm games, since the touch screen works great and there isn't equivalent games to fulfill that gap
So, do you have to play the games you install from waydroid with touchscreen?
The first Android game I thought to play like this was Streets of Rage 4, since i bought it myself awhile ago. Unfortunately, when I tap on Install, the Play Store app just crashes. So I opted to download Netflix and get some of their games instead. Katana 0 seems to run perfectly, while Dust & Neon requires the lowest graphic settings to run at a stable 60fps.
This is really cool!!! So I tried it out and now I'm wondering if the internet stoped working for anyone else?
Did everything right it said error cloning Casualnek repo! Trying to clone again using backup repo (is there a fix for it?
I use XtMapper to map my keyboard and mouse to touchscreen controls. I believe that it should be able to work on the Steam Deck too.
@@sudoharun unfortunately no it doesnt work. Although you can use Mantis to map touchscreen to gamepad.
Author of the script here and on the repo I've added mini guides for Waydroid on Steam Deck.
This needs to be more akin to Wine bottles. per-game OS environment, OS version especially, per-game Non-Steam game entry in Steam UI.
Say you install 10 games, to back them up you always make a full backup of all of them, rather than per game. That's less than ideal.
Curious to know, does COD mobile run this? And with controller support?
Wait, were you saying "like that smash button" on purpose?
Is there a way to change which device it is emulating? Because it’s emulating a pixel 5 this reduces the resolution apps will push.
You should be able to specify a different image file
Waydroid is not an emulator. Its not emulating Pixel 5 but rather just uses the Pixel 5 fingerprint to spoof Netflix
I wonder if I can sync my PlayPass licensing?
Would CODM work with this? and how do i get rid of the password afterwards?
Have waydroid running on my pixel 3axl ubuntu touch, but use aurora instead of googleplay. There is a performance hit on the phone, but the deck is a much more powerful beast.
im tinking it should be possible to use this in emudeck but idk if it would run slow
Trying playing Wuthering waves on steam deck but it doesn't work on linux, i hope it works fine on android
Now that sounds well handy for travel, download a few Netflix titles and I wonder If I could get Sky Go working, so I can finally watch F1 when abroad via a VPN.
I installed it but when I try run it on my steam deck it will not run
Hi! thanks for the script! After the installation step, I go to the settings. The market crashes almost immediately :(
Why the Hell doesn't Valve have a toggle button per game for touch screen functionality? It drives me nuts how I can't easily disable this easily
Waydroid isn't even a virtual machine, but just a container with LineageOS installed inside. All the Wayland Android bridging is what it's really about though
I know that but I didn't t want to explain the difference

Wa wondering if Pokémon unite works on waydroid
I'm new to this but when I click on open terminal here it's still just saying deck@steamdeck , doesn't matter what folder I open and open a terminal here it's just the same? What am I doing wrong?
Look up changing directory through terminal. The commands you would use are "pwd" and "cd" to either check where you are in terminal or to change to a different location
You might not be doing anything wrong at all, it could very well be that by default the prompt in the terminal doesn't show the current directory you're in. You can use the following commands to navigate around in the terminal:
pwd - shows you the directory you're currently in
ls - shows you a list of files and directories in the directory you're in. Use the "-l" flag to show a vertical list with additional information such as file permissions and size (in bytes). So that would be "ls -l"
cd - lets you change to a different directory by adding the path where you want to go to the command. This can either be absolute, e.g. "cd /home/deck/Downloads" or relative, e.g. "cd Downloads" if you're already in the deck home directory. Going up a directory, e.g. from /home/deck/Downloads back to /home/deck is done with "cd .." (a double dot)
@@RudyBleeker ok thanks I'll take a look again when I get back home
So would the Android version of Minecraft also work using this method?
Yes!
can you play xcloud gaming that way, through android? does anyone knows if it works?? thanks
There is a web client for Xcloud that Microsoft officially supports
How did you get roblox running all i get is a white screen
I would love to see an x86/x64 chip with hardware ARM translation if that's possible, I thought that Apple did something like that with Silicon to improve Rosetta, maybe I'm wrong
Imagine if Steam Deck had a SIM support... it's basically a phone now.
I just did that a few weeks ago - configure Waydroid to be able to make phone calls!
I tried to install Roblox but all I get is a white screen. Can I get some help on how to fix this.
but this only works with x86 apps, can we have arm emulation with qemu?
This **does** work with ARM apps

Oh... Does this work on desktop pcs NOT running steamOS specifically or any variation of it? I'm on kubuntu and considering moving to something else arch-based
You can install Waydroid on your Linux desktop, but the script I used in the video won't work on anything other than SteamOS
@@gardiner_bryant I imagined. Waydroid felt very unusual to install, I couldn't figure it out yet but I'm sure when the need arises, I will figure it out
@@leonoliveira8652 I too run Kubuntu on my desktop, and I got it mostly working a few months ago. I ran into some issues with my GPU (it's a 3060) not liking Wayland or something, but it mostly worked. Then I realized I didn't need it and stopped using it. That was my first attempt and I didn't do much research so depending on your system I don't see the need to switch to arch unless you want arch.
wonder if you can install apks? I think the community made metroid games would be awesome to play on the deck.
Of course you can. So long as the APK supports the CPU architecture, which I assume is x86_64 on the Deck.
Some apps only support arm/arm64 because that covers nearly 100% of real world decices.

Look for Android in desktop mode and add it to steam manually
@@gardiner_bryant Ah there it is, thank you! It works but now other problems, It just isn't there yet.
I was hoping to get all the games off my phone but most of them don't work. And when I open a office document, it takes over the android window and crashes it. Also my bluetooth keyboard is double typing every key in the vm. This is how Linux tends to work for me, lol.
i dont really care about android games but it would be nice to use some andriod apps on linux. ive got a really nice audiobook reader on my phone but id love to also use it on the computer.
Could we then add android games to our steam games list? ie: Mario Kart Tour as it’s own icon?
I don't believe so
You can via desktop mode as anything you install gets added to the start menu, which can then be added to steam
@@Metal-Josh yes you can! Author of the script here. The repo linked i've created mini-guides that covers stuff for waydroid steam deck.
I thought Valve was going to provide this via their Steam Client on the deck?
That's what inspired this video.

Will this work on regular KDE Manjaro? The Waydroid AUR wouldn't build.
(Building on AUR is always a coin toss, I wish people weren't so evangelical about it.)
I used Waydroid for sony connect. but it doesn't support Bluetooth.
I have the cheaper wh-ch520 but it does support 360. So thought I would hook it up to play games. But steamdeck itself would not find it. New phone would not find it, until I installed the app on the phone. But still can't get it to work on my deck. And every time I try the app to setup the head phones it ask for Bluetooth which doesn't work. So hopefully later on in an update.
I hope this means also, the inverse could be true? What I mean is I've been looking for a way to play steam games on android, on a retroid pocket 2S, more specifically.
No, that's not really possible
@@gardiner_bryant It actually is possible via combinations of box86/box86 and wine/proton and wrappers (there are wrappers like winlator that put all this together) but it requires a very beefy device to have any reasonable performance and only some ARM SoCs work okay with it (I think mainly qualcomm ones) - doubt the retroid pocket would handle it
So many emulators now, I'm just hoping warthunder mobile gets good support.
have you tried playing wild rift?
I think valve would need to make a deal with google to officially use google apps (not the same as android) and polish the support like windows did with amazon android games.
Two significant hurdles.
I doubt that is a hurdle for them. THQ are open source gplay services and if existing apps will be sold on steam they can be ported over to the open services
