- The fight scenes in "Everything Everywhere All at Once" put a fresh spin on classic kung fu movies. We spoke with stunt coordinator Timothy Eulich and fight choreographers Andy and Brian Le about how the movie's most impressive action sequences came together.
Timothy, Andy, and Brian worked with directing duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, aka the Daniels, to plan and execute the film's fight scenes on a tight budget and shooting schedule, shooting almost entirely within the confines of a single warehouse building in Southern California. Here, they talk about the inspirations and references they pulled from in choreographing the action in "Everything Everywhere," from classic Hong Kong movies and Jackie Chan action flicks to break dancing and parkour.
Timothy has worked as a stunt coordinator and performer on TV series like "Westworld" and "Stranger Things" and films like "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Cobra Kai." Previously, he collaborated with the Daniels on their A24-released "Swiss Army Man," starring Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe.
Andy and Brian are the brothers and self-taught martial artists behind the popular RUclips channel Martial Club. They appear in several scenes of "Everything Everywhere" as both actors and stunt doubles, most memorably opposite Michelle Yeoh in the IRS trophy fight. Previously, the siblings worked on Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," with Andy playing the Death Dealer in the film.

How The Kung Fu Fight Scenes Were Shot In 'Everything Everywhere All At Once' | Movies Insider Хобби
The movie didn't confuse me. Just confirmed I'm not the only person who feels how they feel about the world and the randomness of it all. I feel less alone with my thoughts now. Along with old school action scenes and beautifully dramatic visuals. This will be the best movie of the year. Hands down
Same
I feel u. Many of my friend said they can feel it is a great movie but it is “confusing” in general. I just cried so hard like a idiot when watching it.
yo you described me right here
No, it was very easy to understand, I just turned to Christ and he gets rid of confusion. It’s spectacular and heartwarming
@@lockay101 ....don't know what made you tie religion into this, but I'm happy for you either way man. Whatever floats ya boat
Why is no one talking about how impressive it is that Waymond's actor still pulled off a lot of the fight scenes despite leaving the screen for more than 2 decades??
Edit: Ok, if you're gonna try and say he did fight choreographry and martial arts in his time out of the limelight, dont. A bajillion people already gave me the info
He trained like a mad dog for this role. Not just martial arts, but also with acting and dialogue coaches so he could nail all the different versions of Waymond
@@AlgunPersona I know racacoonie waymond was the best
at first minutes of The Batman, isn't that Waymond? the one get mobbed by painted face gang.
@@AngweenAnnora hahaha I dont know but it'd be awesome if it was
@@AlgunPersona because he is really a martial artist in real life.
The film hit me really hard, As an asian living in the United States i really had a hard time understanding my immigrant mom's obsession with controlling everything i do and always being disappointed in me. The film helped me understand that the issue isn't me, it's her and her insecurity that is making her act that way. Michelle yeoh's character was my mom in every aspect, she gave up her life to bring me to the states and as i grew up being more americanized every day...she sees that she is losing her asian daughter (culturally in a sense). My mom died last year, and i saw this movie a few weeks ago...i cried so hard; i wish i saw it when she was alive so i can say i am sorry for all the pain i caused her.
To me the film was about the struggles that asians have adopting to a new culture, one that is very extreme and different from what they understand. Asian kids growing up here have a hard time trying to adapt to 2 different cultures that at times are constantly canceling one another out.
As a positive take away, much like Michelle's character in the film, I'm sure your mum adored and loved you with every fiber of her being regardless any conflict :)
Thank you for sharing this.
I'm very sorry for your loss. If the movie's message tells us anything, it's that no matter how hard it may have been for your mother to see you become more and more americanized, she still wouldn't have wanted to give up the time she had with you for anything else in the world.
We are Vietnam war refugees. Live in Germany but have relatives in America that I have never seen. My father abused me and my mother. I've been disturbed ever since. Heroin addicted. Be happy for everything in life.
I actually cried reading this. You made such a beautiful statement. I am very sorry for your loss.
Having not seen this movie yet, (yeah, I know, but life has been kinda happening at exponential rates and not always in very welcoming ways) I am forever grateful that I'll now be watching this fully aware and mindful of how it represents these themes for Asians and Asian Americans.
Seeing all the trailers and stunt teasers, I never really thought about how it affects being raised between two cultures and one of them being American (honestly don't know if we have any true culture here in America anymore, or if we ever did to begin with...) And especially how it impacts the psyche, spirit, and emotional being of individuals dealing with culture shock from the culture clash/culture absorption!
This insight you've given us will make the experience of my first time actually watching this movie that much more meaningful and enjoyable than I already knew it was going to be, and I thank you for that!
😭🙏🏻🤗💖
So glad Andy and Brian got to be in two big movies within a year, from their small (yet amazing) beginnings from Martial Club to the big screen of the likes of the MCU
Brothers Joe and Amthony Russo of MCU films produced EEAAO!
💯
@@Mangolite 🧢🧢
@@slyphknttdotdotdot637 Lol? Their names are in the film credits...
Collaboration between the two Le's, the two Russo's, and the two Dan's. Quite an unlikely event.
This film is like one of those once in a lifetime movies that probably comes in a generation, century or a decade like Citizen Kane or The Godfather. In this MCU saturated age of 90% cgi movies with no real depth, this film really set a benchmark. So good. This will definitely nab a few Oscars, like Parasite. And Michelle Yeoh is an absolute dream. I would take her any day over all the American greats.
note that the Russo bros helped produce EEAAO - I’m glad that they’re using their MCU success to help movies like this get attention
A better film than parasite
@@kifacorea Parasite is a different genre of film, it feels disingenuous to compare these two great films from two different sides of the world.
The mcu has its place too both are great
..kung fu hustle is last decade
Personally really loved that the action relied on mundane objects as weapons and didn't cut so much (coz it would just make me dizzy). Also liked that the way to connect from different multiverses is to do oddly specific things.
I completely agreed with you but the (coz it would just make me dizzy) part made me laugh
Have you seen the Hong-Kong action movies the video says it was their references?
That's how they *always* did it like 30+ years ago. Use mundane objects as weapons, long takes with wide shots, hits that actually *do* hit, actors doing their own stunts...
Hong Kong always knew how to do action way better than the USA.
Try The Raid: Redemption
It's a brutal fight movie with not much cut
love the profile image
I absolutely love the usage of mundane objects like the fanny pack in fights, I only wish they wouldn't have resorted to sex toys like buttplugs and dildos. To me, that brought in a nastiness that the movie could've done well without.
This movie is revolutionary. The fact that how seemingly bizarre and unique it was, managed to deeply resonate to so many people proves how connected (and wonderfully complex and bizarre) we all are.
Its crazy that the Daniels, who are inexperienced in the area of making action movies, managed to create something this complex and beautiful. This goes to show how much time and effort they spent in this fantastic movie
Sometimes all you need is a fresh person to stir the stagnant pond as we say in Arabic.
They were clever, they hired bright young stunt men who brought in new ideas and experienced martial artist actors in Ke Huy Quan and of course the legendary Michelle Yeoh.
The great creative people have a keen understanding of how to find the right collaborators. Plus, this scenario of them being an experienced in one area, prevents the movie from becoming a another example of genre.
They were successful music video film directors which was how they got their start
I'm loving this, the fanny pack scene gave me pure Jackie Chan nostalgia, was so much fun! Also it's so cool to see the team behind the "trophy fight" scene. Amazing!
He’s look a bit like Jackie,
I thought he was Jackie for a minute
@@lexocool7551 My understanding is that the stuntmen were from Jackie Chen's company as Michelle Yeoh's fighting ability is too fast for others.
For sure, that one scene where Wayment kicks the knife away while the arm was wrapped was stolen directly from Rumble in the Bronx store fight scene.
The Michele Yeoh role was originally offered to Jackie Chan.
Yeah well everybody senior forgotten something Michelle yeoh used to work and Jackie Chan film as a stuntwoman at first, and she broke every bone in her body but she always healed up using traditional Chinese medicine she was never an actress but one day Jackie Chan notice that she had the quality to be an actress so he started giving her speaking lines 😊 and the results well she no longer was a she was an actress.
Alright. You win. I want to watch this now. Anything that captures the magic of old school Jackie Chan but with a fun twist has got me sold.
You won't regret it. This movie was made with pure heart. You'll laugh and maybe cry, too.
Can you please get back with your reaction of this movie?
Funny thing is, the first idea was to cast Jackie Chan in this movie. But as the writing process went, it needed more emotional actor/actress with a lot of range. Thus, the focus shifted to Michelle Yeoh's character.
Although I wanted Jackie Chan to be Waymond (both were in Police Story 3), I think Ke Huy Quan was really great as energetic optimist.
Ur in for a ride.
@@zitronentee I LOVE Jackie Chan, but I can't imagine anyone but Ke Huy Quan playing Waymond. He was incredible.
I enjoyed this movie so much! From the insane, funny, witty fight scenes up to the randomness of it all. I cried, I laugh, I felt everything. It actually resonates so much of us just trying to figure things out while living in this insignificant, stupid world. It brings out the real existentialist in you like how we are just tiny specks in a very big universe and that we really don't matter. However, it also reminds us that in spite of it all, we chose to love, to be kind, and to endure each other because that's the only way we can really survive. Hands down the best movie of the year! This deserves so many awards!
the butt plug scene still makes me laugh just by thinking of it. Lol. And the fanny pack!!!!! It's just so cool I can't shut up about it
It was such a wacky scene. I have watched some wacky anime but that took me out of it
After that scene, my mouth was widened throughout the whole fight scene cus I was too stunned
are you a kid? im so confused.

@@justsomeintrovertedhuman5726 i think only a child's mind can find funny what you find funny. that's why i had to ask if you were a kid..
Watching this just makes me appreciate this movie even more. The actors really needed to put in the work to pull it off.
If you haven’t already, PLEASE GO SEE THIS MOVIE! It’s absolutely beautiful, and it’ll have you laughing your lungs out to sobbing like a child.
And pondering your existence.
I remember loving the fight choreography so much and thinking it was so different from everything else I had seen recently; seeing the technical discussion behind it is So cool.
I felt like I was watching a PROPER movie. Where the hard work was put in and the extreme CGI taken out. 👍
Yes! I dont know where hollywood got the idea that we want to see fights with a thousand cuts, and shaky cam, but I hope this wins best picture and changes their minds forever.
this is why Jackie Chans movies are so awesome. not only is the choreography good but the precise editing is what sells his fights. not like Hollywood films where it takes 15 cuts to show someone picking up a stick.
Shaky camera 😁
its funny they wanted him for the role but he reject the part so they went in other direction and asked michelle yeoh.
@@pedrito0429So Jackie chan was going to be the main character?
@@MLGDuckk well they offer the part but he said no xD. So they revert the roles and go for michelle yeoh, because she does her stunts too. the other actors like ke hu quan and jamie lee curtis did their own stunts aswell risking themselfs, they deserver all the awards
This was the best movie I've seen in years. They don't make movies like this anymore. Not sure they ever have actually. So many movies today are so meaningless and just a rehashing of something already done before. This is not that in any way or any means. GO WATCH IT.
Best movie since Parasite imo
Facts it's mainly marvel movies flooding the theaters these days
I genuinely don’t get it, as an Asian (not living in america) I have no idea why the praise of this film was so high. Personally, I felt this was messy and uncoordinated, with a poor story line and plot.
This movie actually reminds me how enjoyable it can be when a movie do things right.
@@LOL-VBE I'm not Asian but I do agree with you unfortunately. I mean the acting, the production and the editing was amazing. But the plot and some of the humor didn't really land for me. Which is a shame.
Look… I haven’t enjoyed a movie this much in years. YEARS! I howled with laughter, I teared up, I marveled at so many scenes, and learned something about myself. The fight scenes were impeccable and so was the acting. Every single person in this was a joy to watch. This is the movie of the decade for me.

I loved this movie SO MUCH!!! It was a wild & crazy ride but with big feels as well. I recommend anyone give it a try. The actors shine in such unique ways that it all just comes together as brilliant, in my opinion 😊🤷♀️.
I love Michelle & think she really got to shine in this movie in such a different way. 😁👍
Brian and Andy, wow, finally getting the big jobs they deserve, so happy to see them involved in this!
Yeah they were great, I was blessed with the opprotunity of meeting the martial club during one of the first screenings of "everything everywhere all at once" seeing them do demonstrations and tricks in real life before seeing them on the big screens was great, the whole auditorium loved them, and we'd cheer everytime we saw their faces on screen.
Jackie Chan's criticized Western fight direction, saying that directors do a billion jump cuts because they don't have confidence in their performers. If you want to see Western fight direction done right, watch Kingsmen.
Brad Allen is Jackie Chan stunt team alumni
I really liked the wackiness of kingsmen. I wondered why I had but now I know! I have to watch it, they always play it on TV but I have never seen it in full.
Fight choreographer of kingsmen was Brad Allan who was part of the Jackie Chan stunt team. That's why...
Looool, it's funny how you mentioned an example of Western fight direction done right, only for the fight choreographer to be someone who's from Jackie Chan's team as well haha.
Ironic.
No cut fight scenes would be John Wick.
Respect to Jamie Lee Curtis for taking part.
And respect for her being as ride or die about promoting the movie. More actors need to actually care about their work imo.
I didn't know that. Omg no wonder the lady was so familiar to me 😭
@@marka8817 right I was like I know this actress the makeup team should be applauded cuz I did not realize it was her but I knew the voice
When I saw that she was in the movie, I expected her to kinda phone it it. Not the case AT ALL. She went all for it and just nailed everything so well. Such an amazing job.
@@Road_to_Dawn JLC is at a point in her career where she can choose her roles more freely. Never expected her to phone it in. Especially when the concept of the movie is all wacky and wild, and she's a fan of anime.
This movie is such an experience! Me and my husband cried, laughed, and had an existential crisis afterwards
The entire team behind this movie is excellent...
I love how they regard breakin’. You have no idea how much breakdancing has & will start to influence, movement-wise, movies & shows. Its underrated the level of athleticism bboy’s & girls are at no since the 80s.
AND THE FACT HE CALLS IT BBOYING!!! for the real heads LOL
I was so moved and I laughed so much at the absurdities and cried at the earnest emotions. Top 3 movies for me now
This was one of the most creative, entertaining, thought-provoking, and enjoyable movies I've ever seen. It was an absolute joy to sit through this.
The joy I felt when Data/Short Round walked onscreen was such a nostalgia rush I don't think I've ever been happier to see an actor return to the big screen. I hope he get more roles.
who are data and short and what's round walk? You need to provide more context lmao
@@pile_of_kyle Ke Huy Quan who plays Waymond was Data in The Goonies and Short Round in Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom. He stole almost every scene he was in. As an 80s kid, I thought he was the coolest and wanted to be his friend. He was the "tech-gizmo" inventor in the Goonies and Indiana Jones sidekick with an even quicker wit than Indy. Those back to back roles for a kid might be unmatched. He went on to have a mostly behind the scenes career in movies, notably working as Wong Kar-Wai's assistant director on 2046. To me he epitomized the energy of kids talking 100 miles an hour when we got excited about something as kids in the 80s, the stuff that Stranger Things tries to replicate. I think Hollywood owes a lot to what he brought to the screen at such a young age and it was so satisfying to see he still has that energy in such an amazing movie like Everything Everywhere All At Once. I hope he gets more leading roles in the future and I still want to be friends with him one day. Dude is just supercool imo.

This movie was one of my favourites, it had martial art fight scenes which I grew up with, it had sci-fi and it also had drama, action, comedy and just everything, it didn't confuse itself too, it was grounded. I cried watching this like multiple times and I've never cried watching a movie before
I LOOOOOOVE this movie so much. I hope more people watch it or it comes to Netflix soon so that it can reach more people.
I really thought Jackie chan choreographed these sequences after the scene with the riot shield. Glad to see a young asian American generation carry the torch, especially in such a fantastical story like this one. Well done guys
yeahh when they mention it was inspired by Jackie Chan movie I was like "it would be more special and memorable if they ask Jackie Chan himself to help them with the random thing choreograph fight"
Fight me but this movie is AMAZING hope it will receive more recognition and awards!
I don't know a single person who prefers choppy jump-cut action scenes over fluid, one-take choreography.
Everything Everywhere still cuts every 5 seconds
As a Hong Konger, this is so proud to know how our action movies can influence the Hollywood a lot.
The prop work and comedy in this movie DEFINITELY gave me such old school Jackie Chan vibes and its a JOY!
KE HUY QUAN IS THE ACTOR OF A GENERATION! IM SO HAPPY HE’S BACK!
This deserves an award. Kudos to the team
When an emotional focused movie with a tight script and great ups and downs spends so much time on action choreography... you can see all the love and passion that made this movie possible.
This movie tramples any of my fav marvel movies. Hands down to the actors and staff. Such a masterpiece!
Shout out to the "Scorpion Guy" Narayan Cabral for performing that gnarly stunt!!!
The stunt work on this film is so damn good that I thought I was seeing a blooper at 4:06 where Key knocks over the card stand, despite the fact that a crew member is clearly visible pulling it over with a string. Absolute magic.
Stephanie Hsu ate the character of Jobu Tupaki. Mad respect.
Damn imagine being able to work with THE MICHELLE YEOH like man what an honor
correction: that scene from Shaolin Temple @ 4:24 shows Jet Li practicing with a three-section staff and NOT a rope dart. Insider should've just used a clip from Magnificent Warriors (1987) instead, Michelle was quite proficient in the rope dart in that, too 😉
This movie was so cool. I love how it was creative and different. The fight scenes seemed more intriguing than a lot of other action movies. And I also love how weird it is (I mean that in a good way).
I actually really hope this movie gets nominated for Oscars, I don't even remember the last time a martial arts movie got one

What's great is the fight scenes help tell the story, not replace or distract from it. Just a well done film all around.
The 80s kid in me nods with approval. Also after 2000s was ong bak. The 1st one had this 5 min. uncut fight scene where the protaganist fights up a 5 story spiral walkway thing. Lol. The scene the stunt choreographer filled in for the character Waymond was so graceful and ballet like
Please give everyone involve in this film every award, everywhere, all ar once.
I love Kung Fu movies. I saw quite a lot of Jackie Chan in "Everything, Everywhere All at Once". Jackie's style of Kung Fu is "Whatever keeps him alive" in the scenes. From chairs, towels, notebooks, you name it he's probably used it to defend himself against the cartel.
This is why I found the movie so nostalgic and why, when done with respect for the art, the movie can be both exciting and human at the same time. Most modern Kung Fu movies try to show the martial artist as beyond the limits of human capabilities. They use plenty of cuts to impart power (like the video says) but they forget that the brutality of Kung Fu is NOT what people keep coming back to watch. The human aspect of it is far more important than flying through the trees or fighting off crowds of gangs. If you can't identify with the hero or heroine, it doesn't matter how powerful you make them.
What a profoundly detailed movie. Truly an homage to all the great Kung Fu movies that came before without cutting any corners. From casting to the story, I'm in constant awe of the Daniels.
The moves are so amazing that it looks effortless. Great job
Great movie. Great performances. Worthy of every Oscar. Exhilarating and constantly laugh-out-loud hilarious throughout with a beautiful dose of tenderness and kindness running through each and every scene.
This film is the only movie that’s ever made me cry about a rock with googly eyes
Damn they deserve all the awards. The actors didn't have any doubles and did all the martial arts themselves. As someone who practices capoeira, the martial arts with all the cool ground moves, I take my hat off. Wow. Not to mention Michelle Yeoh's age.
It's an art form for sure.
My Dad and I miss these types of movies.
We hope more movies of this genre are made in the future.

Let's go Martial Club!!!!!
Top 5 new fav movie. I will be watching this again and again until I am dead. This movie made me laugh cry and cheer. Something no MCU garbage has ever done. There is some legit important lessons in this as well as someone who is struggling with anxiety and depression this movie hit really hard. Classic.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. So brilliant.
Beautiful Choreography concepts by Andy and Brian! FANNY PACK FTW!!! Bringing those breakdance and parkour elements in WITHOUT looking too cheesy and put in "just because". I love the breakdown of creative expression reminding people that we're watching art! So many martial artist and weapon critics are quick to criticize the unrealism of movie fight scenes. "MOVIE FIGHT SCENES" that's what they are! Ironically I couldn't help but notice the footage shown of 3 section staff 4:23 when talking about of shéng biāo (rope dart) 😅
When she says "rope dart" the video shows a three-section-staff. A rope dart is a rope with a dart at the end of it, which is more similar to the fanny pack (strap with weight at the end). Xialing can be seen using a rope-dart in Shang-Chi (which Andy and Brian also worked in)
First time I saw rope dart type of work was in Jackie Chan's Shanghai Noon. He uses a horse shoe instead of a dart, but very impressive.
I hope the great success of this film will spawn a slew of other films that don't rely on shaky cams and endless cuts to depict fight scenes. Watching this movie brought me back to the glory days of Jackie Chan's fight choreography.
Imagine watching this behind the scenes video without having seen the movie itself and then coming up on the buttplug scene
Oh I love details and behind the scenes vids like this.
I feel like martial arts movies of Hollywood become Jackie Chan's new generation.
