- In this video, Dr. Jena Gardner shares practice tips for students preparing their ILMEA set 1 audition music, "Saint-Saëns Romance, Op 36". The video also includes a complete performance for students to practice or play along with.
The Romance by Saint-Saëns is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your beautiful sound and great musicianship! As you prepare for your audition, here are a few things to keep in mind!
1. Don’t short change the long notes - play them for their full value and maintain a beautiful sound. Try practicing with 8th note subdivisions like this (Play the first 8 bars with subdivisions)
2. Pay attention to dynamic markings throughout. There should be a big difference between your pianos and fortes.
3. Record yourself! A lot of the time we think things are sounding a certain way, but then when we hear a recording, we realize that we need to do a lot more with phrasing, articulation, dynamics, etc.
Here is my performance of Saint-Saën’s Romance for horn - Feel free to listen or play along!
Students can get a free mini-lesson by messaging Dr. Gardner through / wiuhorn or via email.

Subdivisions are a great practice technique.
Glad you agree!
Thank you so much for the practice tips. It helped me a lot teaching my own students.
Can you make a video where you give literature recommandations for students? Romance is a great example!
Great suggestion! I am planning more videos for this summer and will keep this in mind.
Thanks
