    Thank you for saying "No" to Dr. Phil. I enjoyed him until i heard him say that "If you aren't having sex, you don't have a real relationship." There are a LOT of reasons a person/couple may not be willing/able to have sex, and i am directly affected by many of them (sexual orientation, disability, abuse issues). Our relationship is just as valid as any other - just as your relationship is valid.

      Seemed to work out just fine for us.

    • @dustinweaver5040
      @dustinweaver5040 3 года назад +12

      While that statement is wrong by Dr. Phil, there is a bond that is created by having sex with your partner that can’t be forged in other ways. It’s biologically evident as well. Your brain sends all sorts of chemicals through your system that help create that bond and your brain literally associates that person with love and happiness. True, that can occur in other ways, but not to the same extent as with having sex. It doesn’t mean your relationship isn’t real, but it is a biological fact that sexual intercourse creates a stronger bond with your partner neurologically speaking.

    • @treywhite4186
      @treywhite4186 3 года назад +15

      @@dustinweaver5040 I agree that sex can create a unique bond between partners, it isn't necessary for a loving marriage. Lots of couples can't have sex for one reason or another - it doesn't make them any less committed to each other.

    As someone who was in an abusive relationship, I don’t think there’s a way to come back from that kind of treatment of each other, so I do think the advice to break up was warranted in that case. It can actually be really dangerous when couples in abusive relationships seek out couples therapy because the goal is often to preserve the relationship. This has nothing to do with disability and caregiving though! Perhaps related, my abusive ex called me an “invalid” because I was going through a chronic pain flare up toward the end of our relationship. I had to exit that situation because I knew I couldn’t survive with someone who was unable to accommodate me or even just let me prioritize my own needs.

      @@Carousel5883 she said that it works out great for both of them and they have a very healthy marriage. You're choosing not to believe the words she has expressly and concisely worded.
      If somebody says they feel a certain way, don't go telling them they are wrong. They are the expert on their own feelings, not you.
      I think it speaks to your own beliefs that you cannot believe that an interabled relationship could be a happy one, even when somebody expressly says that it is. You have no information to go on except this person's words - no knowledge of the couple personally - and you leap to the conclusion that the relationship is unhappy. Not only did you make the right decision, but also your point about caregiving and being in a relationship being perfectly possible is so true. No one in a committed relationship knows what the next day will bring, perhaps your partner will get flu and you will need to nurse them, or for some people a dreadful illness like dementia or injury. If you love someone truly then being there to provide care for them if they need it is part of the deal. Also it is clearly not just one way in your relationship. Shane clearly cares for Hannah in many ways, even if he is limited in what he can do physically.

      @aimee glatt Phil did say that 100/100 interabled relationships fail. That is beyond inaccurate. He pulled that one out of his ass. I know many interabled couples where the individual has a significant disability and they have healthy, happy relationships that span decades. Phil used the disability as an exploitive platform, but this couple needed mental health help.

      Dr Phil never said he was a burden. He was saying how the guy said he felt towards his girlfriend. Some people didn’t watch or pay attention obviously. Some things are true that they are critiquing but a lot of it is ridiculous and not even close to what dr Phil was telling this coupe.

      @mike gallimore There are a lot of things about real life that aren't romantic and a "turn on". Being in a relationship isn't solely about turning your partner on and it's certainly not all about romance all the time. If that's what you think the reality of a partnership is- then sadly you'll be in for a rude awakening someday and you likely won't make it very long in your relationships. Having a true and authentic relationship with another person takes work. It can be messy. It can be hard. And it can become even more so if you have children. Do you think childbirth is a turn on? Or caring for a person during an illness or after a surgery or supporting them through the death of a loved one? They're not. But do you know what is? Having a partner that sticks by you anyways. One that is there for everything- not just the good times and the romance. A person that accepts all of you- even the parts that aren't picture perfect. That's a turn on.

    • @GMR.24
      @GMR.24 4 года назад +5

      @Black Widow There are plenty of "whole men" out there that are emotionally disabled and disconnected and don't have a clue what it takes to be a partner. You're looking at one aspect of a relationship, the physicality, and making it the full picture.

    I watched the episode and I wish I hadn’t. That poll literally made me cry. Thanks for reminding me that no man is going to want to take care of me for the rest of my life. It was like he was telling the audience, this is what will happen if you date someone who is disabled. You’ll both be miserable. Your channel makes me so happy, but I’m very aware that the chances of me finding a man who would be interested in me are very slim to none. Very disappointed he did that.

      I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1996 and married my best friend in 2003. He provides care for me and has never once made me feel bad about it. After 15 years we are still best friends. It seems that most people feel a disabled person should feel lucky that someone wants them. ugh! I have reminded a few people over the years that he likes me as much as I like him. :) Keep your chin up; you never know what the future holds for you.

    • @valeriavagapova

      Honestly, I feel like the "Tinder" context skewed the poll. Tinder is all about the illusion of endless options and swiping on many people fast without really learning much about them; so for someone who never met you in person and only sees you as a picture and a set of traits it's too easy to just swipe left because it's "easier" to date someone able-bodied, especially considering that most able-bodied people are ignorant about disability issues and might feel awkward and intimidated by the idea of approaching this topic.
      However, if you meet someone in real life and you two get to know each other well, establish nice connection and discover that you two have great chemistly - I'm pretty sure your disability is going to matter A LOT less by then, awkwardness will not be a fear anymore and it's probably going to be very easy for the other person to overlook whatever might be bothering them about your condition. At least that's how it seems to me honestly.
      I'm sure you and your person will find each other someday. Wishing you all the best!
