- Notice: Map has a been updated and has a new name "Umbral Excavation".
This is a map I made while learning how to use the World Editor in idStudio. It is intended for new or returning players. You download and play it on the DOOM Mod Portal, which is available on a beta branch for DOOM Eternal on Steam.
I have not decorated the map with models, but you CAN make custom maps look visually on-par with official maps.

I remember how it was back then, and my God, this is just glorious. The memories are there, but this is something new entirely. I feel so happy.
Now it is only a matter of time before someone remakes Doom 1 and 2 in Doom Eternal!

when eternal released I was like, "man I wish they brought back snapmap". This is way more than what I ever dreamed of I though they would never add mod tools!

all that's missing is a current gen patch for D16 and maybe a new episode for D64.

The map is genuine kino. A nice plug and play, with challenging arenas and pretty unique level design. It's simplistic aesthetic doesn't detract from its worth, and enemy placements show the player that weapon master is expected of them. During my Nightmare playthrough, I died a total of 4 or so times when on Nightmare, and usually they were fair deaths.

Played this as soon as I could. Genuinely really fun! Good amount of secrets and sidepaths, fun encounters with classic mode style weapon pickups. Can't wait to see what you make with actually polished visuals!
I was about to say that this is a love letter to the original Doom players, but no - this is a love letter. Period. Well orchestrated, clever level design, good progression of weapons and enemies, it has it all. Well done. And buddy, you don't have to decorate anything. This is proof that you can have a really good game without props or any fancy decorations. Keep them comming. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

@@RikTheEmperor Why would it not? Doom + Doom II has mod support. The eternal modding tools are still in beta, that gives them time to work something out for consoles.

The problem with newer game engines is that they rely more heavily on static meshes as opposed to CSG-based map geometry. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see what people will come up with. I'd have a crack at it, but I'd like to get more hands on with .lwo modeling first.
Agreed, that will singlehandedly cripple most users' ability to make maps that are even remotely visually appealing. This is one of the double-edged swords with a modern editor like this, versus a streamlined tool like SnapMap. I think an editor like this is great for a proper dev team where you've got a modeler, artist, level designer, etc. It just isn't practical for the average lone wolf, though. Still good stuff nonetheless, and I've got my fingers crossed that some small teams will come together and produce some insane mods with this stuff. A Doom/Doom 2 remake is an absolute must!
honestly I doubt they even plan for master levels in TDA if they bring the mod portal to that as the community will make super hard shit, there won't be a point putting out something official if MC ML was anything to go by. their stats show ppl weren't finishing MLs and they needed to pace it but the mod community doesn't care about that fortunately.

I love the idea of covering the floor with tentacles instead of lava or purple or green sludge or just a death plane.
We might not just get DE versions of doom 1 and 2 but of doom 3, 2016 and all the quakes. Even a stripped down proof of concept map shows a lot of versatility.
I'm still playing thru Doom2016 (yeah i was late) but all this shit is getting me so excited to just get right into Eternal. Then when Dark Ages comes out I'm going to lose my mind.

I have a question, do you know how to make a mod that replaces the music on a level with another? For example, the holt replaced with cultist base music.

Also 1 more quick question if you don't mind: when replacing music in the game, you have to make it match the exact length of the track in game, however, the transitions I hear when editing and mixing aren't smooth in game. Is there a way to change the time when the tracks play? Thank you!

Yes. I used idStudio to build the map which has a world editor GUI.
@@Velser Is the logic that you had to apply a bit similar to snapmap? Asking this because i'm debating on buyin this on pc as well now as a console player lol.
@@acommongamer6351 It's a lot more advanced than SnapMap and generally more difficult to use. It may take a few days to get accustomed to idStudio's editors but there are tutorials that can be accessed in the Mod Portal.
I'd love for someone to remake doom 1 or 2 with this. classic level layouts but in the doom eternal style.

Hey Velser good job. I downloaded a few asset packages like hell on earth.How do we load the map in id tech studio? I tried devmap/e1m1 intro but error saying cant find map files or something.

Why not just snapmap 2
idStudio is a much more advanced editor that enables modders to do much, much more than Snapmap.
Snapmap was cool and let the average joe make maps, but full on modding support with tools is just better and not something we've seen with modern idtech until now.

Stupid question time... I can't figure out how to load up my mod when I publish it. It's maps/deadsimple dot map in editor but when I try to load it once it's published? Nope. How would I do this?
I had to unpublish it for the time being smh b/c otherwise ppl would download it and not be able to play it smh

Congrats! I am trying to learn how to use this engine as well.
One awesome thing about this is that, technically, with all of the tools you have, you could make entire new games with this engine if you have the time to code, model, illustrate and compose.
