I'm a total mood reader. I'll be in the middle of a book and in the mood for a certain book, but by the time I finish my current read, I no longer want to read the one I did a few days. I wish I could plan out my monthly reads, but if I do, I end up in a reading slump.

Like you, I’m a total mood reader and what book I pick up at any time is what I want to in that moment - and it may not be what I thought I was in the mood for even an hour earlier. I do create monthly TBRs though. At the beginning of the month I look at my shelves and ask myself “what’s calling loudest?”. And that is what makes up my TBR (usually 5 books). I know I’m going to pick up and read one immediately, but the rest, well who knows if I will still be in the mood to read them as the month progresses. In my reading journal for each month I list my TBR and tick off any I have read, then also list my “going rogue” list. Even some of the latter won’t be read as I can pick up a book and start reading it and then decide I’m not in the mood for it.
Maybe something like what I do will work for you - so you can completely mood read, but also have the fun of picking out a monthly TBR to potentially ignore.

Interesting topic and I agree that there is a spectrum of mood reading. I make plans each month, but I leave room for mood reads as well. I also know myself well enough to realize that I may not feel like reading some of the planned books when the time comes and I look on my shelves for something else. My plans are really piles of possibilities so I embrace that term wholeheartedly. I join in reading theme months and challenges, but I don't let those dominate my reading.

I am not much of a mood reader, I build TBRs and get through at least half the books on them. But then sometimes I'll have a random urge to read something completely unrelated, or I'll pick up a book from Libby just because it's available. I'm going to do a project at the end of the year though where I go back through all of my monthly TBR videos and count how many I read, then compare that with my total for the year, and that will tell me how much I stick to my TBRs!

I'm a total mood reader. I have an incredibly long TBR list from booktubers and podcasts. I'm a huge proponent of public libraries. I always check the new book shelves first and usually pick at least 2 from there (according to mood and recs.😊) I normally have 1 audio and one physical book going all the time.

Hi! Interesting video! I generally read 5 or 6 books at once - a regular mystery, a historical mystery, a fantasy, a spy thriller and whatever strikes my fancy. Reading strictly from a list would turn a pleasurable experience into a chore for me. Lately, I have been binge reading the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. I never would have thought I'd like vampires and werewolves and monsters! I gave it a shot, thanks to booktube and am thoroughly enjoying them!! Iain Pears definitely needs to go in my PoP!! Thank you!!

I am influenced by book tube. I do multiple book challenges am a member of 2 book clubs so I often read to match the prompts but try to suit my taste. I do try to do several genres, and of course have favorite authors. Trying to read authors from other countries and books that have been translated, so I do have my lists. II buy books at book sales, thrifts stores and utilize the Free Little Libraries. I use the library and LIbby, especially for audio. I usually have at least 1 audio book and 1 hard copy book, but often multiple. I have tried not to do too many at the same time, as I will not remember or confuse the books some. Reading is so great and the activity surrounding it is my new hobby.

I am definitely a mood reader. I have multiple books at once (like you, a Kindle, an audiobook and a physical one) and I normally alternate a fiction and a non-fiction as a palate cleanser. Other than that, it's all over the map, it can be brand new release, super old, some random book I bought on sale, a booktube suggestion...

I try to plan my reading, but I'm not very good at it. I like the planning but I will get inspired to read something else that doesn't fit the plan. Booktube influences what books I consider reading in my future and of course I make videos, though it doesn't shape what i read specifically.

I know this was about mood reading, but I loved the reminder to pick books to read with friends! It does make reading so much more fun to read it with a friend, but I always forget to!
My biggest constraint has always been just what became available at the library. I always have at least 10 audiobooks or ebooks to pick from that I then choose whichever fits the mood!

I love picking up some books for projects and planning a bit but then also letting spontaneous reads come into my life too. I spent a couple of weeks in a nursing home and was listening to The Dutch House. Nurses and staff would walk in and say, “Is that Tom Hanks?” There’s an interesting back story about how he became the reader. He was filming in Nashville where Ann lives and one of his crew became ill then it was lockdown and she stayed with Ann. Look it up. Also Ann commissioned an artist to paint the painting that was used for the cover. Interesting stuff!

Such an interesting topic. I’m more on the mood reader spectrum but I try to watch the prizes and pick up something from the big ones. This year I went out on a limb and judged the first and second rounds of the BookTube Prize (fiction then nonfiction). That locked me into some TBR schedule since there were a lot of pages and a set time to finish. I’ve also made room for some big tomes for various book clubs. So I guess I try to mix it up. 😂

Hi. This is pretty belated and off-topic, but I recently had a thought pertaining to "historical fiction." There's a book by George Saunders called Lincoln In The Bardo that I liked quite a bit. It was super odd for sure, but it impacted me. It's almost entirely fiction, but has actual writings from the period interspersed throughout. The audio book was wonderfully performed.

I am a pretty extreme mood reader but I allow reviews to influence me and some challenges. Also, I am in a banned book club so there are some pretty intense reads for that. I like to have about 5 books going so I can choose which I am in the mood for and pick it up and read. In other words, if one of my current reads is sad, one scary, one thought provoking, I can decide what mood I am in. I like to have one audiobook going and one nonfiction and one spiritual and Bible reading. I also would like to read one poem everyday. I’m short, I love it all. Thanks for the video.

I am DEFINITELY super “floaty” and just read what hits me at the moment. That said, my TBR is 99% from Booktubers. I may start a book and might have the next book planned, then when I finish book 1 I completely change my mind on book 2 and go with something else. This is almost the complete opposite of how I am in my personal and work life! 😂

I generally like to switch between fiction and non-fiction, but its not always strictly in that order. Also after reading a dense book (either length or challenging read) i like to pick up a small book in between. (These small books are mostly dominated by the brilliant short penguin modern classics).

So basically I currently read 1 book from each 4 series I've started as well as mixing with like 20 manga series I'm yet to finish 😅😅😅

I am a mood reader, with some guidelines. I have a big tbr set up for 4-6 months (I don't read a lot in 1 year) and I pick up what I feel like I want to read from that tbr. I also don't put pressure on myself to read the entire tbr. Whatever is left unread in those months, naturally passes on my next 4-6 months tbr. Lol I hope it makes sense. I do that in order not to get lost when I look at my shelves. Outside my shelves, I'm also influenced by booktube and my day to day life. For instance, I recently found out (to my shame 😅) that the films I am Legend (with Will Smith) and The Mist (which is also a favourite film of mine) are book adaptations. I was so baffled and excited at the same time, that I had to purchase them and include both in my "before 2024 ends" tbr.

I am definitely on the most moody side of the mood reader slide. The only planned reads I have are my bookclub reads and those only because I am the one choosing the books. And then again, if the book doesn’t grab me I don’t read it.
To pick a next book is so difficult. Sometimes I have an idea and I start it and nope no no not going to read this now. Other times I have no idea what to start. So I am always starting several books and seeing what sticks. I want to participate in booktube events but the idea of having to abide by even the most loose rules (like, read one non fiction book) is just 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ I did read a historical fiction book in June as that is my favorite genre 😂 I mean, I love history but even reading one non fiction in three months of a specific time period is too much. It sometimes is very upsetting to me not to be able to just pick up a book and finish it because it’s next on the list. Ah well, here’s to new reading adventures 😊

Moody side of a moody reader - I like that.
I sometimes have trouble picking my next read as well which is probably why I buddy read with people. That way it’s a joint effort while keeping my accountable.

I have a LOOSE list of what i want to read each month, which includes buddy reads and Booktube events. The bad thing abt mood reading is if in start reading a few pages of my buddy read and then feel like "oh no... this definitely isn't what I want to read right now. 😅" sometimes I'll push through but that is SO HARD. And i feel it's a disservice to the book.
But also sometimes i throw out the list or add to it on a whim such as my Dune reread when the Part 2 movie came out. I hadn't planning on the reread but once i saw the movie i was like "Yes!! This is what i want to read right now."
