According to Ray's son Ray Jr. both Bob and Ray were reluctant to do this bit. Once they heard the audience react they knew they were a hit and the rest went smooth...they settled in and enjoyed performing it. I have the entire show here on youtube in 3 sections..minus the Willie Nelson performances..
@@oneeyedman99 This was a special called "Bob and Ray, Jane, Laraine, and Gilda" that aired during the regular SNL time slot. The musical guests on this special were Willie Nelson and Leon Russell.
This isn't from SNL. It was a show that aired as a replacement for SNL one weekend, it was called 'Bob and Ray, Jane, Laraine and Gilda' and starred radio comedy stars Bob and Ray. Bob's son is Chris Elliot.
@@TheAskTrixieChannel No, it was a different show. When SNL went on vacation, there were shows that filled in the time slot, like The Rutles: All You Need is Cash, and this. They didn't air live, they were taped. Mr. Mike's Mondo Video was created for that purpose, but didn't air because it was too outre, so it ended up with a theatrical release. A lot of them were produced by Broadway Video, Lorne Michaels company, so I'll give you that.
Well BEYOND hilarious!! I remember nearly losing bladder control over this from the moment Bob and Ray started singing the hook. HILARIOUS!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😆😂😆🤣😂😆
That original cast was incredible. They've always had talented performers throughout the years, but the original cast had a chemistry that I don't think has ever been matched. The first time I ever saw SNL I was a teenager and still living at home. I didn't know anything about it and was watching it with my Dad. I remember laughing so hard that my stomach hurt, and my Dad was right there with me.
have you seen 'the thing that wouldn't leave'? the disgust on jane curtin's face is real-her real life loathing for belushi totally sells the bit, you can't buy chemistry like that it has to be real
@@rusblock She genuinely loathed Belushi, but disgust was her specialty no matter who she was talking to, straight woman was her job and she did it very well. I thought her funniest moments were when she expressed disgust at what Gilda Radner's crazy characters (Emily Latella, Rosanne Rosanna Danna) were saying and doing, and she and Gilda got along very well.
It's a cliche to say that "the good old days were better", but nobody alive today, nobody, will ever be as cool as these five doing this performance at that place and time, 1979. None cooler. Ever. THIS is how you commit to a comedy bit.
I remember watching this, and thinking it was hysterical. One thing that made it funny was, I think the Rod Stewart version was #1 at the time, so you heard it all the time on the radio.
I was just eight years old when I saw this. I didn't fully grasp Bob and Ray's opening monologue but when they started singing I thought it was the funniest damn thing I'd ever seen. Decades later it's still one of the funniest things ever.
Bob and Ray, "the two and only," on SNL when it was still occasionally funny, if not nearly as good as SCTV, let alone Monte Python. Or....Bob and Ray, by themselves, on the radio. Bob and Ray, Nichols and May, Ernie Kovacs; we're too ADD and dumbed down after two generations of cloned electronic gratification for their likes again. Thanks for posting this.
The fact that this NBC one-off was done at all was a miracle in itself. Needless to say, Bob & Rays' demo was far different from SNL's but young folks like myself go a chance to see 2 legends who did more with less than any other comedy team in history.
I saw them on the tonight show once, and they were stupendous. They also voiced the two main characters in the animated BC Christmas Special and reworked some of their routines to fit it. That special was just too funny.
And 37 years later, this is still hilarious!
Even more so...
And 40 years later, I love it!
Classic comedians, they are still great
....42 years later! still miss Gilda!...If ever we needed a ballerina, its now! Bob and Ray are the classic's classic! TU for posting!
This is priceless!
I can remember being totally wasted and falling off the couch laughing at this.
Brave and comical! Thanks!
I wasn’t wasted and I fell off the couch laughing, too! It was just so dang funny!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The 3 ladies of the original SNL.
I remember Gilda doing Patti Smith too.
Remember this from 1979 still hilarious 😂 😃 😄

Why Willie Nelson performances? Bob and Ray were the musical guests.

With the exceotion of "More Cowbell," the funnist musical moment in SNL history. I femember nearly doubling over in laughter.

@@yournamehere6002 Ehhh, close enough, really. :) It was filmed in SNL's studio, with SNL's cast, and even used SNL's bumpers to and from commercials.
@@yournamehere6002 And Chris’ daughter is Abby Elliott. (And his other daughter is Bridey Elliott.)
Is comedic talent genetic or environmental?

I remember seeing this 40 + years ago and laughing my ass off! The girls have some pipes and Bob & Ray are hilarious.
The girls had some pipes ? LOL well ....sort of , anyway.🤣 I loved them all and SNL ruled in that era.
It doesn't seem that long ago 😅
Classic!!!
One of the all time great bits. Bob and Ray are gawds.
This whole episode was genius.

Too many generations just don't know Bob and Ray, their loss

Newman belts it out real well!
Yes she does!
She was definitely the best of the 3 easily
That‘s what I thought.
I thought the same. Jane and Gilda faked it pretty well

katluver11 I didn't like how Bob and Ray sang the chorus and wished Gilda, Jane, and Laraine sang the entire song. I liked their voices.
You may have missed the joke...
@@MarthaRoseQuartz that was the whole point.

You made my day. Thank you from a fan. Well done.
Remember seeing this on an AFRTS broadcast shipboard in the Persian Gulf. Still laughing when I went on the mid-watch an hour later...
I think Ray Goulding ad-libbed his call out to Sugar after the first chorus judging by Bob Elliot's reaction.
Still effin hilarious!
I'm pretty sure I was tripping the first time I saw this on SNL. I'm also sure I was already crying laughing before it started.
Larraine is a pretty good singer!
And she was very sexy

Am I crazy or is that Shaffer on keyboard and leading the band?
IMDB lists him as the keyboardist for this.
Paul Shaffer was the original Saturday night Live producer and bandleader for music.
Shaffer is ALWAYS in the band! Thank Gawd!
Is that Will Lee?
Pretty Good in The Era after Dan Aykroyd & John Belushi left, I believe, if memory serves me right
LOL😆
This is fucking cool, fucking hilarious and utterly awesome!!! I just saw CNN Film's 'Love Gilda' and it was like she was in the same room as me! :D
Is this how Paul Shaffer and Will Lee met?
