Admittedly, I was one of those college freshman who didn't know about the Bb lever until Dr. Clayton pointed it out to me .... XD But seriously, it has changed the game for me -- I love that I can leave the lever down and not have it change notes!
I don’t know if it’s my small fingers or what, but I’ve always felt like it’s a bit of a stretch for me to use the Bb right hand lever, but it really isn’t! I need to get more in the habit of utilizing it, I think I only use it when you tell me to 😂
@@AprilClaytonflute I fudged. I' was and am a clarinet player first. When adding saxophone, way back in the distant mists of teen years, there was an additional key that could be attached to the i1st pad below LH 1, to simulate the Bis key, I t did work, "kinda"... alas a bit out of tune. I, as a flute holder, am in awe of your full beautiful sound and amazing dexterity. Brava. I will share this lesson with two generations of daughters who play flue.
I've been wondering about this for years. That nagging feeling that I'm using the wrong Bb fingering is now cleared up. Take 5 is a piece that uses all 3 Bb fingerings. The A Section uses all Thumb Bbs. The bridge uses 1-1 and the Trill key Bb. Fun melody to play also.
OMG....that was great! I had to pause the tape to get my flute to check out the right hand lever! I always tried to use the easiest Bb before and now I have a 3rd choice! I can't tell you how excited this revolution makes me!!! Can't wait to try it! What's the next session going to be?
During practice I will always prioritise practicing the right hand index finger b flat since it's the most difficult fingering. Usually during normal playing I will use the b flat lever since I find this fingering very comfortable (large hands). If there is no other way out I will use the thumb b flat. Thanks for this very clear video about the subject ;)
Interesting to think that without the alternative Bb fingerings the RH index finger would definitely be considered a "fourth little devil." Is there any situation in which using the "regular" RH index Bb before or after a G or Ab would be a good idea? Or is that always supplanted by either the thumb Bb or the lever?
I get very lazy about the B-flat fingering question sometimes... thanks for the inspiration to think it through and use all three!
Very good lesson and very good Tips.
April, thank you very much.
Glad you liked it!
This is an excellent reminder...I really need to use my B flat lever more! I feel I often forget about its usefulness.
I loved this episode!
Glad to hear it - thanks so much!
Also guilty of sliding, and didn't know about the third Bb! Thank you for these rules and clarifications!
Wish you'd of been my teacher.... when I had a flute. (Love Vivaldi) 💗 Dr. April is a treasure!
@@AprilClaytonflute if I could play (Gluck's) Orpheus.... it would be a good day! ty

amazing! still watching!
Mind. Blown. 🤯 I never knew about #3. Thanks!! 👍
I love the three different options! When you know when and how to use them life is better!
Amazing! Watching!
A very useful video indeed!! Thanks for these rules of thumb.
Such a great breakdown of the different Bb's!! I am definitely going to use the lever more:)

This is great! I knew of the three ways to do B flat, but never knew in what instances I would use the B flat lever. Now I do! Thank you!

As a saxophone player first, the Bis key was obvious, as well as the 1/1 fingering.

Thank you, very interesting! I actually knew about the lever, but I had never quite understood when one is supposed to use it...

Also, I was always told, "don't be sharp, don't be flat, just be natural...."
You teach Pooh bear?? Great video!
I do slide thumb from time to time, do not tell! 😆 But I think it is a very good rule not to allow the students!
I won't tell you if I do myself..... I try to do it only with great justification, as seldom as possible, though!
Guilty as charged with sliding on the Bb thumb key as a bad habit.
