Just became a member best I've found yet . Can you do a video on pinch harmonics , or maybe on tones , blues I have a champion 100 and can't get it dialed in quite right.
Hey Mike! Thanks for help supporting the channel! I was actually planning a pinch harmonics lesson very soon! so you might be in luck👌 In terms of tone.. I will have a think about how best to present this! It can be tricky as everything from the way you play to the effects pedals/amps and style of music all affect tone.... leave it with me👌
sam, i just want to make a comment that many of us believe, but didn’t take the time to say so. You’re contribution to all guitar musicians from beginner on up, has been generous. It takes a kind hearted and humble person to take the time to share the knowledge, that at one time in your life, took many years and finances to learn yourself, and now, you share to the public that knowledge. Yes, there are many tubers that also share their knowledge, but none so authentic and simple to learn as you have displayed. I myself, and I’m sure I speak for many others, Thank You with all my heart. Why am I taking this time to comment? I have been playing for 40 yrs on and off, not as a professional but as a hobby and for enjoyment. I lost interest many times because I couldn’t put it all together. As many, I couldn’t afford lessons and work full time to support a family, still at 62 yrs old. After watching your video lessons and theory sessions, I haven’t put my guitar down every night after work. You single handedly peaked my enthusiasm. You wouldn’t believe the gear I purchased on behalf of your contribution. Tell the suppliers what I said and maybe they will supply your needs. If you would like some proof, I can share receipts and suppliers. One being a major supplier, Sweetwater. I hope this comment reaches you and once again sincerely, Thank You!!!😊
Hi Dan, thank you for this heartfelt comment! I have been running this channel for perhaps a year and a 1/2 now and I get a lot of positive feedback which makes the time it takes producing content for little monetary gain all the more rewarding! This by far is the most thoughtfully put together comment I have ever received and is very much appreciated! I hope you continue to be inspired to pick up the guitar. Once again thank you🙂
I agree with Dan, I'm going to put this to use. Never thought of using the road markers. I've been playing as a hobbyist as well since '96. Need to put in that time on it now. Thank you
As others have said, this is super simple and easily digestible. Other videos start off way too complicated. Even after only doing this for 10-20 minutes I feel like I have a way better handle on my fretboard. This is such a great starting point!
Totally agree. I must have seen over 20 videos promising to help memorise the fretboard in 10 minutes. Each one of them ends up being so complicated you just give up. Finally, the search is over. This man deserves a Nobel peace prize.
The only way to memorise the notes on the guitar is to sit and literally memorise the notes on the guitar. It will takes a long time. But once you’ve got it down, and once you pair it with a knowledge of what notes are contained in scales and chords it will open the door into whole new musical landscape.
Yeah, of course at some point you need to learn it all to know the notes immediately. But starting with a skeleton as anchors is a great way to make this easier. You can also use shapes of intervalls, scales, chords or finger positions and so on to understand your fretboard better. A further step could also be to know the real notes behind the fretboard so that you can read sheet music. But you are absolutely right that it is all a lot of practice and focused learning.
@@misterjackpotsNot really. You're not memorizing a hundred different notes, you're memorizing a repeating pattern of 12. You just have to be able to find one note on a certain string by memory, the rest you can just apply the formula. The guitar repeats at the 12th fret. If you can learn the notes of the low E string open to the 11th fret, you can learn the whole fretboard very easily
subscribed straight away. I have been self-learner and struggled so so much for years trying to find a decent theory lesson on the guitar. you've got this so very well done. straight to the lesson and no fancy time-wasting talk. Thank you so so much. I am many many many many more will appreciate this lesson.
I just memorized FGAB on the low E and then CDE on the A string, and continued to do the same for the remaining strings with FGAB and CDE. It’s an easy to remember pattern because there are no half steps. Whenever you get to a half step, jump to the next string.
Guitar-and music itself-is a very pattern based system. I think of each pattern is a different “angle” to view the notes. Different people will learn from different angles. There is no one way to learn anything in music! The most important tip of all is that if you hit a block and feel frustrated because you feel like you can’t grasp something, then stop, take a break, and try looking at it from a different perspective instead of giving up. In this example, if FGAB/CDE doesn’t work for you, and you can’t memorize what is on the dots, then maybe try memorizing the notes horizontally, or carve it up in whatever way it seems to “speak” to you. Make your own system, and in the process you’ll learn a lot more than you would from wrote memorization anyways.
I've been playing rhythm guitar for years....55 now semi-retired and decided this year to try and tackle some lead and understand the guitar better...This is exactly what I'm looking for..Thank You... ..
The unshowy clarity of the explanation is beautifully matched by the sharp visuals. Even if you already know much or all of what is being explained it’s a real pleasure to see it done this well. Brilliant. Keep em coming.
This is helpful. So is learning octave intervals. That way, say you are on a thin string, like B, you can trace backwards down the neck towards the nut to find the nearest octave- do it more then once until you land on a string/note you recognize. Another good technique that is more usable is to memorize all the notes in your chords starting with C Major so learn where every CE&G is. The I, 3, 5. Now you really have something- more then just note memorization, you will be able to access those notes when that chord comes around. Next, learn C# Major, then D Major chord and so on. When yoiu are done, repeat but learn minor- simply flat the 3rd. Strive to learn one chord a week- 3 notes, every fretted location. In theory, it should take you 24 weeks but it will go much faster then that. So, at a glance, this technique is nice but has limited application IMHO.
In decades of playing guitar, no-one ever mentioned the fret markers and their function (beyond that they exist)... but this is a sneaky way to help get around the fretboard... With a knowledge of scales and the 'Circle of 5ths" (4ths), it's easy to define the dots in terms of the open string being the 1st of an interval -- the 1st dot is a flattened 3rd. The 2nd dot is a 4th, the 3rd dot is a 5th. The 4th dot is a flattened 7th... and the 'double-dot' is an octave. I'm off to dump all this onto some flash cards and drill it all... Fanx! for the inspiration :)

Tbh, probably THE best video I've ever seen on explaining this concept. Will definitely be watching your other vids! Love the layout and animation, so simple and so effective.
I didn’t think how important it really is when I first started. But after playing for almost 10 years, I really didn’t get that good. So in 1983 I started reading music and started learning all of those little notes on the fingerboard of a guitar slowly, but surely, my guitar playing took a turn for the better. And I think it is excellent that you teach this method. Some people may not get it in five minutes. I know I didn’t but just the same. I learned it. Glad I did sometimes it’s good to take a refresher course. I think no matter how long we apply or how many years we still like to learn new things I know I do. Thanks for the video and thanks for encouraging others to do what you’re teaching. Have a great day. Love your video.👍🏼😁😎❤️🎸☮️
Many thanks! yes learning the names of the notes across the fretboard is often skipped over when first learning the guitar. Depending on what you want to achieve on the instrument, it can be much for useful for some than others. However it is something that can benefit everyone! glad you enjoyed the lesson!
Sam, I almost started crying. You simplified this in a way that I thought was never possible. I almost gave up on figuring out where notes go, thank you!!
Your calm voice helped me pick up on learning where the notes were on the fretboard so much faster! Thank you for taking the time out of your life to help others!
another point of course that helps too, is that, the note on every 5th fret is the next string up! Low E 5th fret is A, A 5th fret is D, D 5th fret is G (the one exception is G string is 4th fret to make B, then last is B 5th fret is high E.
been a 3 years unconditional guitarist, i had been dying to actually take guitar seriously, and out of all the videos ive watched, this is WAY less complicated. thanks so much dude
I went from being a professional drummer /singer for most of my life to the guitar as well. Your explanation is making it easy for me to learn lead, knowing the notes in the various keys is the key to being proficient. Your view of the guitar neck gives me hope. Thank you.
This video literally saved me. I bought an electric guitar a few days ago as a complete beginner. I didn't know what to learn first and was completely lost on what to do and I almost gave up and not touch my guitar anymore. But then I found this video. Thank you SO much 😭🙏🏼
As a newbie, THIS MADE SO MUCH SENSE!! I'm getting my first guitar in a couple of days, and this helped tremendously with the no knowledge I have! I will definitely need to keep coming back to this video for a refresher. You actually helped so much! I have watched sooo many videos. They say it's easy, but then show something so complicated. Your video is straight to the point, and SOO easy to understand! Thank you so much!! I'm saving this to my guitar playlist! 🎸
Holyyyy, this is actually so much easier than all of the other videos out there, you just use the dots on the guitar as a simple logical solution, other people have like 200 coloured stickers on their guitar which makes this whole process so much more difficult to understand. Thank you !
Been playing for approx 40 years and never looked at it this way. That made a lot of sense especially most of us guitarist memorise the low E, A and D strings anyway because we all venture into playing a bit of bass which therefore leaves us only th G and B string to memories. Loved your approach.
Outstanding!!! Sir, I applaud you on your direct, factual, and real-life explanation of every beginner's (and often many others also) pain in the neck - memorizing the fretboard. You have truly provided a great deal of clarity too me (and I'm sure "many others". Thank you so much!!! 🎸🎸🎸
I played piano for 10 years prior to guitar, so when I picked up the guitar I saw no relation between the dots being musical like the white and black keys. At first I didn’t care much about theory, because it never helped me write music on the piano. I felt like a trained monkey, plop classical sheet music in front of me and I could play it, but it was like reading someone else’s book, never writing your own. Guitar opened up the world of songwriting to me. In more recent years I’ve tried to memorize the fret board, but it always takes me a beat find the notes. It’s just never been completely wrote memory for me. This is by far the most brilliant lesson I’ve seen on this in 30 years! Thank you.
What a great and well thought out comment! Thanks for watching and I'm glad this video helped the process of learning the Fretboard easier for you👍 I have many other lessons on my channel that will help out so feel free to browse the channel👍 And if you haven't yet then feel free to Subscribe and ring the NOTIFICATION BELL 🔔 Thank you once again🙂
This lesson just blew my mind🤯 So perfect! Simple, to the point, no rambling. Thank you so much. I’m a functional guitar player and have never paid much attention to the dots. Holy cow!! I’m so excited to see how they serve as roadmaps to learning the notes. I’m so excited to work on this. Thank you again!!
Brilliantly simple and quick way to learn and find notes on the guitar. I’ve always stuttered when trying to find or quickly identify individual notes on specific strings. This makes it so much easier to find any specific note on any specific string. A well done video. Many thanks
Genius! Why is this not in the front of every music book I will never know! I know people who struggle for years to quickly identify notes, yet in minutes your students are note confident! Thank you for this video!
Thanks! It's a method that occurred to me when I first started learning guitar and have been teaching it to private students ever since! Its always worked and all my students have always known all the notes of the fretboard regardless of age and ability, pleased this extends into my RUclips audience too!

This is AMAZINGLY simple!! Fantastic explanation! I’ve been playing for over 20 years by ear and feel. I never bothered with theory, to my detriment. After watching your five minute video, I feel I have a much better understanding of the fretboard and can’t wait to get home to apply it. Subscribing!! Thank you!!
Omg this is the best video for a beginner, all the others were so confusing and I think it’s because they don’t start from the beginning… you explained this so well!
This is insane. I've been struggling with fretboard memorization, and for some reason this video made it click. I have watched so many before this and still felt so lost. Thank you so much.
I had always been curious about the dots on my guitar. Now thanks to you I can join the dots! It helps that the note on the 5th fret on all strings except the G string is the same note of the open string below it. This can serve to anchor muscle memory and tune the guitar.
Mann… I’ve tried to learn it since the time I know the alphabetical order but haven’t ever pushed the thinking further, after 6 y and a half of playing, you opened my eyes! Thank you!
I found this completely on accident, but I'm so glad I did, all makes so much more sense now, I was trying to memorize the entire fretboard but there was so much going on I just kept feeling like I wanted to give up, but this just makes so much sense.
I tried many youtube vids and i saw someone recommend your channel under the comments of one video, i ain't looking back now Thank you for this man, you don't know how much it means to me to understand the guitar So thank you❤
I'm primarily a keyboardist, but I work at the guitar every day. I'll get to my point: I'm utterly amazed at how many reasonably serious guitar players never knew that the dots were anything but random decoration or whatever! You'd think that their placement on the thin side of the neck that you look down on when standing or looking down on the guitar would be a clue that they're markers or reference points. Wow! I don't mean it disrespectfully, but it's just odd to me that YEARS could pass & one could never even hear it mentioned during one''s learning process. It must be quite the surprise!
As long as it clicks eventually I guess! this is the way I have always viewed/taught it and it works 100% regardless of age or ability and there are a few other reasons why the fret markers are placed in those specific areas of the neck but that's for another video!
Been playing guitar for a loooong time, not really bothering about knowing exactly the name of each note (and I have perfect pitch and theory knowledge) until I heard several good players / teachers underline how important that was. And today, looking for the fastest way to memorize them, I just realized thanks to your video, I mean realized RIGHT NOW that the 4 dots above the 12th were the same as below. It's so obvious and yet I never really just thought about it. You just made my guitar life (the only real life) simpler, so THANKS MATE!!
The 5mins was for sure worth the watch feel like I can really master the guitar after watching this! Went from stressed to excited to see where I’d be at in a year!
I actually find it's frequently a culture thing together with the instrument in use. As an Aussie, we mostly talk about tone/semitone (at least, when I've been playing keyboards, sometimes with guitar/bass); USA-folks (at least) often talk about step/half-step in most every instrument (I think)... :)
Wow! I may not be able to Memorize everything in 5 minutes but I definitely understood everything in 5 minutes -> or less. When it makes sense as it does now, memorizing will happen naturally and quickly. Incredible. Thank you.
Sam I would love to see a video from your end on the following: On learning the notes on fret board how does one make the desired pattern (Chords) going forward in guitar leaning...Thanks for the revert!
@@editionsforever5353 I Have Many Lessons In The Pipeline That Will Help With This, My Next Lesson Will Be The Caged System For Guitar (Part 1) Which Will Show You How To Map The Fretboard Into 5 Positions.... @@Samjamguitar Eagerly looking forward to educating myself on the lessons that you intended to bring out sooner than later I hope especially the Chord Construction episode - I seriously consumed de lessons in good faith and its does make a difference in my playing guitar, keep up the good work -Kudos!!
I use the 7 5 method for getting to know the notes on the fretboard it goes like this for example start with say A note on the low e string at the 5th fret now if you move down to the A string your next e note will be 7 notes up from your first string ie the 12th fret move to the third string and it will be 5 frets away at the seventh fret move to the forth string and again five frets away. The concept is if you cant move 7 frets up and stay within the twelve frets you move down five ie if your on the 5th fret you can move up 7 to the twelth fret but if you was on the sixth fret you cant move up 7 so would move down 5 this applies to every note on the fretboard apart from the b string where the rule changes slightly to if you cant move up eight frets you move down four ie if you play the 5th fret on the g string when you move down to the b sting you cant move up eight so you would move down four frets.

Holyyyy, this is actually so much easier than all of the other videos out there, you just use the dots on the guitar as a simple logical solution, other people have like 200 coloured stickers on their guitar which makes this whole process so much more difficult to understand. Thank you !
cheers!
So many people are looking for easy to understand guitar lessons. This is perfect. Thanks.
cheers for your support Andy D👍
Been playing for approx 40 years and never looked at it this way. That made a lot of sense especially most of us guitarist memorise the low E, A and D strings anyway because we all venture into playing a bit of bass which therefore leaves us only th G and B string to memories. Loved your approach.
Cheers Jim 👌
Outstanding!!! Sir, I applaud you on your direct, factual, and real-life explanation of every beginner's (and often many others also) pain in the neck - memorizing the fretboard. You have truly provided a great deal of clarity too me (and I'm sure "many others". Thank you so much!!! 🎸🎸🎸
Thank you! It's very much appreciated! Hopefully you enjoy my other videos also👍
I played piano for 10 years prior to guitar, so when I picked up the guitar I saw no relation between the dots being musical like the white and black keys.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad this video helped the process of learning the Fretboard easier for you👍
I have many other lessons on my channel that will help out so feel free to browse the channel👍
And if you haven't yet then feel free to Subscribe and ring the NOTIFICATION BELL 🔔
Thank you once again🙂
This lesson just blew my mind🤯 So perfect! Simple, to the point, no rambling. Thank you so much. I’m a functional guitar player and have never paid much attention to the dots. Holy cow!! I’m so excited to see how they serve as roadmaps to learning the notes. I’m so excited to work on this. Thank you again!!
Awesome! Thank you! check out my other video lessons on the channel...lots to get stuck into!
Short, simple and straight to the point explanation! Really cool man. You are really underrated 🔥
Cheers!
under rated? by who? what? what the hell are you talking about?
Love your videos so much!
Best regards from Korea!
Thank you very much for the SUPER THANKS!! it's very much appreciated!
bro you're my hero. no one else has explained this in a way that fits my learning style until now. i'm actually excited to keep learning now.
no probs! thanks for watching!
Brilliantly simple and quick way to learn and find notes on the guitar. I’ve always stuttered when trying to find or quickly identify individual notes on specific strings. This makes it so much easier to find any specific note on any specific string. A well done video. Many thanks
Happy to help!
been playing for almost 19 yrs and I learned valuable things in here . Thisd is the simplicity I was always listening to
cheers!
I was trying to get my head around this - trying to memorize every #/b - but you simplified it. Well done. Thanks for posting.
Glad it was helpful!
This video is brilliant. The only no-nonsense video I've found on this topic despite loads of other channels claiming to have a cheat method.
Thank you! Yes this method does actually work... I am yet to find a quicker/more effective way to learn this! Glad you liked the video!
Where were you when I needed this years ago? Love it! Keep em coming
Cheers, will do👌
Blown away. I have tears in my eyes. 😥
Wow! I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson S S👍👍
@@Samjamguitar pls do more theory videos.. I can't wrap my head around the circle of 5th's and 4th's and what does tone n semi tone (t.t,s,t,t,t,s) does
@@SS-fs5tw circle of 5ths and fourths will be coming soon... semitone is one fret and tone would be 2 frets...I will release many Lessons covering all issues guitarists struggle with in coming months. thankyou again for your support😃
Thank you for keeping it simple. No one keeps it simple but says it’s simple and then goes on some crazy complicated crap, so I appreciate that.
That's what I'm going for across all the lessons on my channel! Glad you appreciate it👌
This is AMAZINGLY simple!! Fantastic explanation! I’ve been playing for over 20 years by ear and feel. I never bothered with theory, to my detriment. After watching your five minute video, I feel I have a much better understanding of the fretboard and can’t wait to get home to apply it. Subscribing!! Thank you!!
Brilliant thanks!
Omg this is the best video for a beginner, all the others were so confusing and I think it’s because they don’t start from the beginning… you explained this so well!
Thank you! Glad it helped! Feel free to check out my other videos too!
So impressed with this guy! Quality music theory for guitar!!! Excellent! Thankyou
👍👍👍
This is insane. I've been struggling with fretboard memorization, and for some reason this video made it click. I have watched so many before this and still felt so lost. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome! Welcome to the channel!
With the knowledge and effort for you making this video, i just wanna say thankyou..thankyou very much. God bless you sam 🙏🙏
Thanks!
I had always been curious about the dots on my guitar. Now thanks to you I can join the dots! It helps that the note on the 5th fret on all strings except the G string is the same note of the open string below it. This can serve to anchor muscle memory and tune the guitar.
Thanks!
Best explanation I could find, it made the guitar notes so easy and fast to learn!
Great! Glad it helped 👌 many thanks!
Mann… I’ve tried to learn it since the time I know the alphabetical order but haven’t ever pushed the thinking further, after 6 y and a half of playing, you opened my eyes! Thank you!
This is the simplest and most effective method of memorizing the guitar fretboard. Thanks 👍
Thanks!
i rarely comment but you actually made learning the fret board easy and something that can be studied with clear progress over time.
Brilliant, thanks!
First picked up a guitar in 1991. Self-taught. Never learned how simple this was.
Better late than never!
Absolutely brilliantly simple you rock brother cheers to you.
Thanks for the support Koroniria👍
I just wanna say, I’ve been trying to learn scales and chords and I’m so grateful you made it so easy… literally had a mind 🤯
Glad I could help!
Thank you. This looks far easier than many of the other methods I’ve seen on YT
Thanks Paul, Glad you think so👍
TOTALLY agree. Well done sir
Thanks David, I appreciate it👍
Try my 7 5 method reaalu simple and easy to follow to learn the whole fretboard easily.
I found this completely on accident, but I'm so glad I did, all makes so much more sense now, I was trying to memorize the entire fretboard but there was so much going on I just kept feeling like I wanted to give up, but this just makes so much sense.
That's Great! feel free to check out my other videos too👍
Great intuitive video! Excellent for beginners and anyone who wants a clear understanding of the fretboard...
thank you Bob Walters👍👍
Still think my 75 method is easier to learn.
I tried many youtube vids and i saw someone recommend your channel under the comments of one video, i ain't looking back now
Thank you for this man, you don't know how much it means to me to understand the guitar
So thank you❤
Welcome aboard!
Good stuff! Grabbing a pen and paper to drill these notes in my head!
Great👍 that's exactly what to do
This is the easiest way to remember each note in the fretboard I've ever seen. Thank you 👏
You're very welcome!
You deserve wayyy more subscribers. Your videos are literally perfect
Thanks for saying so! Perhaps one day..
Loving this great video, very clear delivery, thankyou!
Thanks👍👍
This is a superb video. I subscribed. “Learn the 4 dots on each string”.
I love the theory alert.
People are unnecessarily terrified of “theory”.
Awesome, thank you!
Very straight-forward, thank u so much
I'm Glad You Enjoyed The Lesson Maynoo Young Doc👍 thanks.
That was the shortest, most succinct and best explanation I've seen of this. 👍
Glad it was helpful!
And that....is why I love You Tube! ....university of....!!
Cheers Dylan👍👍👍
university only for to meet same interests people like you oh wait actually we can do it here What's up I play guitar since 2020
Been playing guitar for a loooong time, not really bothering about knowing exactly the name of each note (and I have perfect pitch and theory knowledge) until I heard several good players / teachers underline how important that was.
Great Stuff. I already know this, but I can use-it-to help my friend ( who is a beginner ). Easily explained. I hit like.
Great 👍 Share The Video Lesson With Your Friend, I'm Sure It Will Help Him👍👍
The 5mins was for sure worth the watch feel like I can really master the guitar after watching this! Went from stressed to excited to see where I’d be at in a year!
I rather go with "Semi-tone" than "Step" but you explained it very well.👍
yes I could have made that clearer but the on screen animation certainly makes it clear as to the intention. thanks👍
@@ozboomer_au can be a culture thing for sure, I definitely could have briefly mentioned this however.. you live and learn.
Wow! I may not be able to Memorize everything in 5 minutes but I definitely understood everything in 5 minutes -> or less. When it makes sense as it does now, memorizing will happen naturally and quickly. Incredible. Thank you.
Much appreciated 👌
Great video, really well explained. Thanks for putting content out 🙂
Thanks Sarah! thanks for Watching👍👍👍
I'm a pianist, and I don't know how I ended up here, but I did learn something new. Thank you.

Excellent, many thanks!
Cheers Christian 👌 Thanks For Your Support 👍
Videos are unmatched stg. Simple, concise and easy to understand and no god daum mid video ads, sam is the goat.
Glad you like them!
Make a movie please so everybody understands
Excellent video with great tips
Thanks Thomas S 👍👍👍 Glad you Enjoyed it!
