If you legitimately commit a crime you would have no basis for a civil suit against the police department and any suit would be dismissed very swiftly. Qualified immunity allows a police officer to mistakenly shoot and kill your 12 year old son playing with an air-soft rifle and not be held responsible via a civil suit. It's also very likely they will not be charged with a crime either because...police. But I guess if you're white you don't have to worry about that.
