Love this point: "The culture encourages timidity rather than boldness and what we need in journalism more is boldness." Makes me think of truth-tellers like Natasha Lennard at The Intercept. Journalists can and should be activists and vice versa. They have stories to tell that the world needs to hear.

The issue I have with "activists" is that in praxis, they are always inactive and nothing more than authoritarian crybullies, who's entire set of anti-ethics is to attempt to force, coerce and manipulate everyone else except themselves to take action. That just makes you the bad guy from the start. Go. Do. You make the change in yourself and your life and YOU take the actions yourself that you would have others take.

I share that goal, Jeremy. I guest co-hosted on Law and Disorder -- a progressive, anti-war radio show on WBAI/Pacifica After two episodes, they thought the animals didn't matter as much as: corporate greed, banned books, police brutality, climate crisis, war in Gaza, freeing Assange, reproductive rights. . . Every possible progressive issue was more current and more urgent. Just not animal rights.

Happy to have had this video pop up on my feed, even though I am not in this sphere of animal activism at all. I found your storytelling and especially the way you frame your experiences around individual people to be very captivating. Subscribed and excited to see what comes next!

I went to r/vegan and posted an AMA saying I am a catholic vegan and why. More than 75% the comments were demeaning and vitriolic just because I am religious. Every comment I made, even simple vegan sentiments, was downvoted to oblivion. I ended up deleting every comment and my post entirely. It certainly made me second-guess if I want to be associated with vegans as a whole. I remain vegan (almost 10 years), but I am no longer in that sub nor do I have any vegan friends.

Sorry to hear that Ryan. Disappointing to me to hear you were attacked for your religious beliefs, especially considering you all had something very significant in common. I'm glad you had the maturity to keep doing right by the animals even though it sounds as though many of your peers didn't do right by you.

Thank you for your thoughtful response! I did not become vegan because of vegans and I certainly won't stop being vegan because of vegans. My goal is to cause the least harm possible, and I am doing my best to improve myself to work toward that goal each day. I certainly appreciate sensible vegans like yourself; it makes me feel a bit less isolated. @@loebjeremy
