      Also, Mitsuha was about to write "I love you" too on Taki's hand before she disappeared. You can tell since it's a horizontal line she started to write, her name starts off with a veritcal line.

      yeah but just like they can write in the diary they can also write the date easily the real question is like they said why they did not realize the 3year time gap, during the switch they can write it down to the diary so the other person will read it.

    If Mitsuha never switched body with Taki, she would have never go to Tokyo and meet him. But, if she have never meet him and give him her hair band, they will never switch body to begin with because they wouldn't have any connection. Is this explainable? or is it just another chicken or egg thing?

    • @gregai8456
      @gregai8456 7 лет назад +191

      That's a good question.
      Try to think of time as nonlinear, a circular pattern. everything that will happened, has happened already, and will always happen, and anything different will create an alternate timeline. It's a theory in physics (The multiverse Teshi Talks about in the movie). Watch Steins; Gate.
      So we as an audience viewed the timeline where the switching occurred, in that timeline Mitsuha will always give the cord to Taki in 2013, and thus Taki in 2016 will always switch with Mitsuha in 2013. We are not shown another universe where by chance she doesn't get on the train and see Taki, but we can assume that Mitsuha will always use her power somehow to connect with someone. As Makoto Shinkai has said in an interview that she could have switched with anyone, it didn't NEED to be Taki. But we don't know if that other person would share the same connection and destiny, as Taki and Mitsuha's red string of fate has been tied since birth, so even if she didn't switch with Taki, she would probably still end up marrying him. Happy ending yay ^ _ ^ (www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/5leizv/spoilers_makoto_shinkais_interview_with_japanese/?ref=share&ref_source=link)

      feelgood99 its still bizarre. armband allowed time travel. but armband was given because girl learn boy in time travel. edit : Stein Gate is one if the best anime i seen, i get the impression, alike in your name its about changing a destructive past for a lot of people in order to save them . For me both stories is about rescue and manipulate time more then love, the way these peoples fatal accident was presented and the Journey and Plan to fool deaths grasp was what really sold this Movie and Steins Gate.

    *As others have pointed out.
    Mitsuha (17) was 3 years older than Taki (14) she went to Tokyo to look for him.
    Mitsuha (17) was the same age as Taki (17) when they were swapping bodies.
    Mitsuha (25) was 3 years older than Taki (22) when they finally met on the stairscase in Tokyo.
    One thing I would point out is that Mitsuha being older than Taki is probably a good thing for their possible future relationship. Taki has a crush on Miki early in the story, and Miki too was older than Taki. It should be reasonable to deduce Taki was “into older women”, or at least had no issues about dating older women.
    In hindsight, this may well have been part of the reason for Miki’s character being designed as Taki’s senpai at work instead of a classmate of the same age.*

    Thanks for this, I had no idea the mood had anything to do with it. Another thing I thought was the comet represents love. It's beautiful but it's also destructive and chaotic

    • @gregai8456
      @gregai8456 7 лет назад +11

      In the shinkai Q & A he talks about the Greek God Tiamat. Tiamat was a chaotic sea goddess, but her chaos could also interpret to creation, as chaos and creation are two sides of the same coin.
      I really wish there were more literature or studies online of Musubi, but I found very little. I assume it can also represent love since his name was translated to knot, bond, and union.

    It's been around 4yrs since I've first watch Kimi no nawa, but everytime I rewatch it or see it on TV, it's just like I'm watching it again for the very first time. That feeling you can't explain, that longing for someone or something you do not know is still there. I bet this movie will not be forgotten even if a hundred year would pass. The excitement when we saw Taki and Mitsuha on Tenki no Ko, explains it, i think you all screamed at the theater. And this video sums up all the emptiness we all feel during the ending part of Kimi no nawa. Years had past and I just got the confidence to watch a theory based ending if Taki and Mitsuha did really remembered each other and ended up together. I'm glad I have watched this vid and gave me a deeper meaning of what has really happend.
    Hopefully, we could see another movie from Shinkai that will make us believe in the power of perseverance, of faith, and of love 😊

    I think the reason i love this movie so much is because i can feel what they feel. Waking up just longing for something. The feeling that someone is out there and i could walk past them every day. Its like there's a big chunk of your body missing. like half of your soul is somewhere else. Then it hits me that ill probably never get to meet that person. And i feel like that Sadness is something most people around my age feel. Or maybe we just want to be loved.

    Great video!
    Rytczakk on MyAnimeList (reference) speculated that Mitsuha's father was the one who had dreamed of her mother, which led to their marriage. This was how he knew of this experience.
    That let me to jump to some conclusions: if that was the case, that would explain his anguish at losing his wife (I think he even said he couldn't save her) and his subsequent turn away from religion because this experience had let him down.
    That may also explain how he was so easily persuaded at the end. He remembered the consequences of his earlier inaction or wrong action.
    (This is a lot of speculating)

    Found your video on Reddit - I really like how you expanded upon a lot of the ideas in the film, as well as filled in some of the cultural contexts I was unaware of! I have a deeper appreciation of the film thanks to your video. The only thing that left me unsatisfied in the movie is how Mitsuha was able to convince her dad of the impending comet... any opinions or thoughts on that?

    • @mobious01
      @mobious01 7 лет назад +22

      I have a theory, the dad knew about switching bodies, according to the grandma it happens to every girl in the family so we can only assume the dad experienced the same thing with the wife.
      If you remember when taki showed up he realized it wasn't mitsuha but then before the comet hits he asked the same question "who are you" but then he notices it was mitsuha that time.

    • @gregai8456
      @gregai8456 7 лет назад +17

      To add to this, just Mitsuha being his daughter, is reason enough for me, and the audience, to believe that he was finally convinced by her words.

    • @laserbeamlightning
      @laserbeamlightning 7 лет назад +27

      That detail is omitted simply because it would mess with pacing but it's a conflict that's set up in the second scene of the film when Yotsuha (Mitsuha's sister) tells her to simply make it up with their father. Mitsuha's character arc is her gaining the strength to confront her father and stand up to him. Taki's note on her hand is what gives her the willpower and strength to do this and hence completes this character growth.

    • @LastLightgg
      @LastLightgg 7 лет назад +8

      I just thought of a theory here. So the dad is aware of body swaps with wife. He thinks the shrine god is saving his wife, but in reality the opposite happens. The dad blames the shrine god, so he leaves, but he has to leave to become influential in the town to save the town. The dad on some level recognizes what is happening to Mitsuha and decides to evacuate.

    • @marcoyz7882
      @marcoyz7882 7 лет назад +3

      Well the comet is already splitting up which is the evidence that mitsuha is telling the truth before so the father will be pretty much stupid if he still wouldn't believe her after she predicted it.

    Thank you for explaining things so well. I was at a bit of a loss as to why they couldn't see each other at first on the rim of the crater, then they could, then they disappeared again. Shinkai has used something similar in other movies - where a character comes to a place where the other has been, and senses their presence. I also didn't understand why all of the text messages disappeared. I just knew that some kind of connection had broken.
    I was very glad to see Shinkai allowed them to find each other. He's made so many films where the lovers never meet again. It probably isn't the most 'Japanese' ending, but one westerners would find satisfying.
    Thank you again for the video.

    • @gregai8456
      @gregai8456 7 лет назад +2

      Thanks for the feedback. I was debating whether or not to include music. Without the music you can hear all the cuts from the background noise of my mic, especially at the end when I made the music really soft. Also I've been told that my voice is very boring, so I thought the music would help add interest. I'll try experiment with no music or less distracting music in the future.

    • @maaryxart1170
      @maaryxart1170 7 лет назад +1

      You can use music but soft instrumental music would be better. If you use music with a beat or vocals it distracts completely from what you're saying and when you were explaining about the spiritual aspects behind the film it's interesting but the music distracts. I can see what they mean - I think the quality of your voice is great but you do fall into the trap many youtubers do of being very monotone with your voice. If a voice is flat and without variety of tone and pitch it can be boring yes. I would suggest studying how TV presenters speak and notice how they frequently change the pitch and variety of they voices to be more engaging. I'm studying acting so we study this alot. The voice is so versatile so it's worth looking into how to use it.

    Would you say that Your Name is basically a shorter more pop version of Steins; Gate? It for one is a lot less nerdy but I thoroughly enjoyed both. Just wanted your opinion to see if you had similar thoughts as I on this.

    • @gregai8456
      @gregai8456 7 лет назад +3

      laserbeamlightning hmm I would say steins gate is more scifi and otaku culture oriented, with not a lot of "romantic" love, but like love for another person.
      Personally Steins gate wins by a fraction of a point because of how interesting and fleshed out the characters were. That's the only criticism I have of your name, is that the characters aren't fully fleshed out, you still feel invested, but not as much as steins gate. That's the only reason why your name is not a 10/10, not for the reason of plot being "too complicated" as western critics have said, I really hate that comment.
      Forgot to answer your question. Kind of. It can definitely be a gateway to steins gate, unfortunately because of the beginning otaku culture aspects, it's difficult to enter if you aren't familiar with the akihabara culture they present, especially Daru and Ferris.

    • @laserbeamlightning
      @laserbeamlightning 7 лет назад +3

      I suppose that's true. For me, they're both perfect. I completely understand your argument about character but after mulling that one over myself, I realized both achieved what they were intent on doing. Had we got more character from this film, the pace might have been bogged down. Instead, we get more of a feeling and just enough that we get what small town girl Mitsuha and city boy Taki are about.
