  • May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and today we will
visit the South Pacific country of Samoa. The traditional "sasa" is usually performed by a large group of people sitting down. The movements depict everyday life. Have a seat and join in on the fun!

The children at the kindergarten that I work for in the South Island of New Zealand absolutely LOVE this seated dance. We know it so well we can just to listen to you now and we don't need to watch it. I'm looking forward to watching some more of your posts. Awesome work Mr. DelGaudio

Where are you getting your information from about our cultural dance? It’s not “Lo pate ma Le Po” . Pate means racket as in ping pong racket. It is “LUA PATI ma Le Po” with Lua meaning Two and PATI meaning Clap. Lua pati ma le po, means two claps with your hands straight together and then one clap with your hands curled in together to make a lower sound. I appreciate when people are keen to learn about Samoan culture but please properly educate yourself before you teach our culture to others. 😊

My apologies for the errors. Thank you for taking the time to correct me and offer the additional translations. I was introduced to the Sasa a few years ago at an Orff-Schulwerk music educator's workshop. I loved learning it and my students have as well. It's such a beautiful and unique dance! I will be sure to make these changes moving forward. If you have any additional thoughts and insights, please share!

I love this video, and my students have loved it too! So much so that we’re performing some of this choreography for our spring concert. I want to give credit where it’s due, so please let me know how I can cite it in my program. Thanks and God bless!

It is great that you are encouraging learning other cultures but it is important to teach it correctly. The use of an african drum beat does not belong in the Sasa. It has a specific drum used and also a specific beat not the one used in the video. This is not the traditional dance 'Sasa,' as such as it is incorrectly done to the wrong beat and drum. You would be better to actually use a clip from Samoa to teach it properly. As for the pronounciation as said below these are incorrect too.

Thank you for your feedback. I'd love to redo a more accurate version in the future with all of this in mind. Could you point me in the right direction for the traditional drumming you mentioned?

@@mrdelgaudio ruclips.net/video/oNodJ7z-1hU/видео.html This is a Samoan College using the traditional drum. There are variations of the beat and you can hear the changes in the beat which leads to the action changing too. Hope this helps

ruclips.net/video/AhrV-BYNh30/видео.html. Sasa is a dance originally depicting what Samoan people do everyday. These days we do fancy actions but it is remembering all the things we do on the islands (climbing coconut tree, husking, scraping coconut, Ava making, other chores) here is the typical drum beat and explaination.

What version of the music did you use? Where did you find it?
