Konnichiwa and welcome to another edition of SUMO PRIME TIME. Even though it’s June and there’s no grand tournament taking place this month, the excitement in the ring never seems to cease. On June 3, the retirement ceremony for the 71st Yokozuna Kakuryu was held in Kokugikan, the home of sumo, in Tokyo. From Mongolia, Kakuryu came to Japan when he was 16 years old and competed for 20 years as a professional sumo wrestler. The winner of 6 top division titles is remembered not only for his toughness but also for his modesty and class. Kakuryu says he’s ready for his new mission as a coach to raise many strong, popular and successful wrestlers in the future. Well, he’s already proven to be an excellent coach, as he’s helped his junior stablemate Kiribayama earn promotion to Ozeki who by the way has now become Kirishima with the rise to the second-highest rank. I’m sure fans are looking forward to see what Kakuryu has to offer as a coach and so am I. Wishing all the best for Kakuryu. Sayonara Yokozuna Kakuryu, but hello great coach Kakuryu! Arigato for watching and I'll see you again soon!
He’s so wholesome man. It must be weird with that whole generation of early-mid 00s Mongolians is retired and getting into coaching now, except for Tamawashi who’s still out there winning yusho lol. I’m sure that’s a fun group of wrestlers to be around.
thank you Hiro for bringing this to us. and you are right, Kakuryu's poise and class will carry not only him through on his new path, but will also be passed down to the young rikishi that fall under his care and tutelage. you can see it with Kiribayama (now shin-ozeki Kirishima) and the humble yet proud smile on Kakuryu's face when it was Kirishima's turn to snip the top knot. Kakuryu has always shown his kindness and empathy. it makes him very special in the world of Sumo. お疲れ様でした. 🙇🏻♀
These hair cutting ceremonies are always so emotional. Kakuryū always struck me as a very respectable yokozuna. He took the behavioral expectations of a yokozuna seriously. Like they said in the video, he was always calm and collected. He was definitely a great yokozuna. Thanks again, Hiro!
What a beautiful person. I was tearing up when he fought his son, but when PapaRyu took his turn and kissed Kakuryu's cheek - bawling my eyes out. Domo arigato Kakuryu-sama, for so much grace and dignity and humble humanity over the years. Kirishima is already a worthy legacy.
Just look at that herculean effort Kakuryu had to use in order to beat Hakuho at the edge... Thats what it took in those days to beat Hakuho and win yushos! Now imagine becoming a Yokozuna during these times! Imagine how insanely hard it was when the ranks were stacked with guys like Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kisenossnto. All of whom became Yokozuna... Its just a testament to Kakuryu's skill that he not only competed in those days, but rose to the rank of Yokozuna AND won 6 titles!! Absolutely mind boggling!!
Kakuryu has such a big heart. That Tamawashi smile upon seeing his haircut ❤ These retrospective videos are a wonderful addition to the channel, would love to see more historical footage of current rikishi or past greats, or even rank and filers!
@@mufc1417 Cuz that's what it took to beat Hakuho in those days. Herculean effort that bordered on superhuman! So imagine making Yokozuna at that time! That's the skill Kakuryu had!
Well done, Hiro and team. Kakuryu was a fine Yokozuna. He always had a technique to use for every situation. Wishing him the best in his future endeavors.
I'm new in the world of sumo, therefore I don't know much about how were other rikishis' retirement ceremonies held. But this video was so beautiful and heart-warming. Little details, such as how his last match was held against his son or how his relatives and partners said their good wishes after they cut his hair made this occasion pretty emotional. 🥹 I really enjoy sumo content, and I'm absolutely amazed by Japanese culture. It was an epic video, thank you!:)
A dignified, classy and highly skilled Yokozuna. He epitomized Hinkaku of the highest rank. All the best to Kakuryu. Fantastic coverage by Hiro and Sumo Prime time. Arigato !!
Classic! Sumotori wrestlers are the humblest of people! Kakuryu had the confidence & technics to be a winner! He wasn't the biggest or strongest, but his technical skills prevailed! Kudos & aloha
probably the best video ive seen from your channel. Got it all. The friends, the son, the happyness, the sadness. What a highlight of a wonderful ceremony
Kakuryu's tachiai was always one of my favorites. It was always just so smooth and, dare I say, graceful. Good bloke overall, and deserved all the success he achieved.
I'm into sumo for not so long time, but I've watched many Kakuryu's fights, past ones and more recent ones, and always was amazed by his skills and strenght. Best wishes to you Kakuryu!
Kakuryu truly embodied the sumo spirit and as a non Japanese he had to work even harder to maintain the dignity of the rank, and I think he did a fine job. He seems like a even better man than he was a Yokozuna, which is very impressive.
Thanks for this video, Hiro! I never got to see him in action because began to sit out for a whole year and retired by the time I got invested in sumo.
Man ! I love this channel. Ive been a fan of Kakuryu for a long time. Mainly it was the way he used his legs when he would wrestle and sometimes I thought I saw some Judo in his technique as well. These days I have high hopes for Hoshoryu and Kirishima. Oh, and I can not forget the Mighty Enho, Slayer of Giants LOL
There are famous people that you admire their skill, their status, or in some cases just the fame. Kakuryu is one that you admire all of those things, and he seems to be one worthy of admiration of who he is as a person. Good luck on all your future endeavors.
As an Irish fan who doesn’t speak a lick of Japanese thank you to all the rikishi and thank you to morita-san for bridging the gap to those outside Japan.
Or the other yokozunas, it would've been nice to see clips of them too. not because the focus should be on them, but because i think it shows how much they all respected kakuryu as a yokozuna
Wow dude, very nice video for Kakuryu dang man awesome job. When I first started watching sumo I always saw him as sharing the pinnacle with Hakuho and Harumafuji. Always so solid, he made it look so easy but you know it isn't. Kakuryu was a badass and I hope he raises the next generation in his image of dignity, consistency, grace, comportment and with a glad attitude. The guy floats like a cloud on the dohyo. Mad respect one f the greatest Yokozuna ever, making such a great exemplar of Sumo. Omedetoo Gozaimasu Kakuryu❤🖤🤘🐉🐉🐉🐉🐉

He Was A Truly Elegant Yokozuna!!🇲🇳🇯🇵
A great Yokozuna who remained humble and dignified throughout his long and distinguished career
Such a huge sign of respect to Kakuryu to have Asashoryu, Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kisenosato and Terunofuji all attend the ceremony.
Yea I would've liked to see more clips of other Yokozunas in this video, so much talent under one roof, massive sign of respect towards Kakuryu
AND..Wakanohana..🙂
Kakuryu - extremely underrated Yokozuna, brilliant sumo rikishi, and very humble human being! ❤
Tamawashi's smile at 10:59 is really warm and heartfelt.
I loved that moment too......
He’s so wholesome man. It must be weird with that whole generation of early-mid 00s Mongolians is retired and getting into coaching now, except for Tamawashi who’s still out there winning yusho lol. I’m sure that’s a fun group of wrestlers to be around.
That smile, that damn smile.
That piano piece at the end was beautiful. Fare thee well, Kakuryu. You were a textbook champion. A true legend.

9:55 I always get teary eyed at the hair cutting ceremony, damn. I hope that his new endeavor as a coach brings him a lot of joy !

A very heartwarming moment with his dad, and his son. ❤

I feel lucky to see his last 5ish years. Wishing Kakuryu success in next part of life!
Thank you Kakuryu your Sumo was second to non & best of luck with your coaching career. Love from Iraq.
Man, what a classy guy & beloved by so many, gives me hope that Kirishima will become Yokusuna. Thank you Hiro and Sumo Prime Time ☝️
I love a powerful, humble and humor filled rikishi...kakuryu you will be missed, goodbye yokozuna and be well in your new journey.
I'm not crying...you're crying. 😍❤😭 That was such a sweet moment w/his father.
Wonderful tribute to a great wrestler!
Kakuryu has such a big heart. That Tamawashi smile upon seeing his haircut ❤
These retrospective videos are a wonderful addition to the channel, would love to see more historical footage of current rikishi or past greats, or even rank and filers!
Love his proud smile when Shin Ozeki kirishima came up😊
Kakuryu is so adorable. He's my favorite rikishi of all-time.
That match at 2:54 with Hakuho was unreal!
Yeah that was epic, But that Cobra Kai "sweep tha leg" at 4:34 was noice!
I had more respect to Hakuho in this lose more than all his wins, he kept fighting at the edge as if it his life depend on it.
@@mufc1417 Cuz that's what it took to beat Hakuho in those days. Herculean effort that bordered on superhuman! So imagine making Yokozuna at that time! That's the skill Kakuryu had!
totally agree
He was a great Yokozuna
You can tell how deeply loved and respected he is by the smiles around him, thank you for all the wonderful sumo.
Honor, dignity, respect with great technique and fighting spirit - that was Kakuryu.
Always enjoyed watching Kakuryu. Such a phenomenal individual, a class act.
This was such a wonderful thing to see… so touching seeing the retirement ceremony and the cutting of his top knot. ❤
Thank you Hiro, I always loved Kakuryus style/technique.
Such an emotional video, thank you Hiro and Sumo Prime Time team!
Very moving! We will miss him on the dohyo, but we will be following his legacy coaching the likes of shin-Ozeki Kirishima!
We can see it all became full circle, he was happy. Thank you, Hiro, for the insight.
Oh my lord I started to tear up seeing him in the ring with his 6 year old son!!!!!!! Thank you for such a awesome career!!!!!! You will be missed
Well done, Hiro and team. Kakuryu was a fine Yokozuna. He always had a technique to use for every situation. Wishing him the best in his future endeavors.

probably the best video ive seen from your channel. Got it all. The friends, the son, the happyness, the sadness. What a highlight of a wonderful ceremony
Huge respect to Kakuryu. It is a feat in itself to have rosen to the rank of yokozuna in the days of all the other great yokozunas and ozekis.
Kakuryu does look like a nice gentleman. It's always nice and rereshing to see these giants become very emotional during these ceremonies.
Kakuryu's tachiai was always one of my favorites. It was always just so smooth and, dare I say, graceful. Good bloke overall, and deserved all the success he achieved.
Incredible! What a great production! Thank you for such a moving presentation…

Love your presentations Hiro. Thank you and keep it up!
Heart felt indeed.

Great coverage. Thx
You didn't show Asashoryu cutting the hair?! He got the loudest round of applause ever.
Or the other yokozunas, it would've been nice to see clips of them too. not because the focus should be on them, but because i think it shows how much they all respected kakuryu as a yokozuna
I'm not gonna lie, I teared up during the top knot cutting ceremony.
He has one of my favourite tachiai!
He has a kind face. I wish him the best and I hope he is happy.
I❤SUMO🌸
Kakuryu was soo small when he started! The footage of his early days are so appreciated.
Nothing could break him, except for the words of his dad 🥺
His last yusho where he beat hakuho was amazing.
That part with his father. I can only imagine the words said, but I can tell that's one proud dad of all the things that he accomplished.
Wow dude, very nice video for Kakuryu dang man awesome job. When I first started watching sumo I always saw him as sharing the pinnacle with Hakuho and Harumafuji.
