    The first thing Snape asks Harry is “Potter! What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?” According to Victorian Flower Language, asphodel is a type of lily meaning ‘My regrets follow you to the grave’ and wormwood means ‘absence’ and also typically symbolized bitter sorrow. If you combined that, it meant ‘I bitterly regret Lily’s death’.

      But we know her, it's been decades now and she has shared every single thought about the HP universe in interviews and on twitter, and tends to over-emphasise how early she had stuff figured out and how far ahead she was planning and leaving hints... She would have told us. If that had been purposefully crafted to have this meaning, she 100% would have told us.

    About Quirrel's turban - yes, the movie messed it up a bit. Voldemort posessed Quirrel only after his attempt to break into Gringots. That is important in the end of the movie, because in the Leaky Couldron Quirrel already wears a turban and refuses to shake Harry's hand, thus it seems obvious he already knows that he can't touch him, but then in the end he seems really shocked about the effects of him touching Harry (in the movie). In the book he is not yet posessed and so it is obvious he didn't know what touching Harry would mean.

    Re: getting special permission from Dumbledore for Harry - that’s for him to have his own broom, not to play Quidditch. First years aren’t allowed to bring their brooms (if they have one) and must use the school brooms for flying lessons. Since Harry was selected for the Quidditch team, which is rare for the first year, they got him permission to have a broom so he could get a better one than what the school has.

    1:07:58 One reason I've seen suggested for Fluffy not attacking at first, is because of Peeves. Remember, the tone he was using was a _sing-song_ one, hence, Peeves was technically making _music_ for a brief moment when they first encountered Fluffy. Also, Fluffy is a guard dog, and guard dogs are often trained more to ward away intruders then kill them immediately, though Fluffy _is_ still dangerous enough to warn students away from getting near him obviously, in part because even a "warning nip" from him would take a chunk out of your leg, so I think it's something to ponder at least...

    i absolutely love mcgonagall. she is stern and tough, but very fair, and has a lot of pride in her house. as you know, she was willing to punish students from her own house alongside malfoy in philosopher's stone, and is quite no-nonsense, which makes for a great foil next to the eccentric dumbledore. she's one of my favorite characters for sure.
    edit: first years aren't allowed brooms of their own, so that's why they don't usually get picked for quidditch, and you need your own broom to be on the team. the school has old brooms to practice on, but they're not very good or fast. my guess is since flying on a broom is very dangerous, they don't need excitable first years, some of whom didn't even know they had magic, zooming around willy-nilly on broomsticks.

    Harry has so much more personality in the books. Much of it is shown by is inner thoughts though, and I don't think that Daniel Radcliffe would have been able to express this through his acting at such a young age. I suppose that's why the duel was cut. It's quite an irresponsible thing for Harry to do, and it works if you understand the way he thinks, but I doubt this would have translated well in movie format.

He even shaked Harry's hand which wouldn't be possible with Voldy on back of his had. Also that scar pain appeared first with Harry's look on back of that turban (so directly on Voldemort) and not in the pub before! And ofc that pain had nothing to do with Snape but Voldemort hiding behind that turban(but ofc first time reader is not aware of it so everything is pointing on Snape as a villain!

      Correct. Voldy mentions Quirrells “failure” and how he needed to keep a closer eye on him. I believe by inference you can assume he means that since Quirrell wasn’t able to get the stone from Gringotts he then possessed him to make sure he’s doing as he’s told

    This is the thing for people who watch the movies before reading the books. All the side characters get mentioned early on, they are part of the story since as early on as this sorting ceremony. So when Justin Finch-Fletchley gets attacked in Chamber of Secrets, we know who he is. When Ron and Lavender start dating in Book 6, we have already had years of Lavender scenes to sort her into a different context. Watching the 6th movie without that makes you think she is just some unimportant side character.

    One of the best aspects of Rowling's writing style is her nonchalant manner of providing exposition. I don't think it gets enough credit. Like you said with the "and then she turned her desk into a pig and back again." That little blurb completely sets up the type of world we are in for, where random stuff like that happens, but it's also hilarious.
    I'm sure you've noticed, she does this throughout her story where she'll say something nonsensical. It provides worldbuilding where we become familiar with the type of world we're in an what to expect. It provides levity. And especially when she's including something that's going to be important later, you very well might not catch on to it because she throws it into one of these sentences that appear to be there just for humor. But then when it comes in later, you're reminded of that scene. So any twists that she does are actually set up and you can catch onto them, but there's a high likelihood that you won't because their camoflauged with all these other sentences that appear to be there for humor or worldbuilding

    • @shugaroony
      @shugaroony 2 года назад

      Agree on her writing style, and it suits the material she is writing for down to a tee. We don't need flowery writing which will fly over a lot of kids heads. Its matter of fact, even for the emotive scenes which then seem to hit harder because of that.

    To further explain Peeves - even in real-world folklore and the paranormal community, there are several different types of spirits. A ghost is the spirit of a deceased human, whereas a poltergeist is simply a manifestation of energy created by the people around it. In a place like Hogwarts, you have centuries of students causing mischief which manifests itself in the character of Peeves, the king of mischief. As far as Harry's scar hurting, it was somewhat explained in the movies. It wasn't Snape that caused the scar to hurt, it was the presence of Voldemort, who happened to be sharing a body with Quirrell, who was sitting next to Snape. You've already noticed that the turban wasn't mentioned in the Leaky Cauldron, and you're right that Voldemort hadn't entered Quirrell's body yet, which explains why there was no mention of Harry's scar hurting in the Leaky Cauldron. The main reason you're allowed to fly a broom, but not use transfiguration is primarily because underage wizards simply aren't allowed to do magic at home. With flying, the magic has already been placed on the broom, so the child isn't technically performing magic, only using it.

    • @lexiburrows8127
      @lexiburrows8127 2 года назад +1

      Mostly correct. Voldemort HAD entered Quirrel's body, in Albania, but was at that point lying dormant, though he DID massively influence Quirrel. This is why Quirrel was actually totally out-of-character, but as no-one there knew him, they could not tell. Basically, Voldemort was 'acting under the radar.'

    I think the dream was just a regular dream, but maybe it's also a set-up for the later books, so the readers will be used to Harry having random dreams and once the "weird" ones start the readers will be questioning is these are real or not

    • @david-jonballinger6638
      @david-jonballinger6638 2 года назад +2

      Nah, the dream was really important and a clever bit of foreshadowing. The turban was talking to him, signifying his relationship and deep link to Voldemort, his Slytherin qualities and even his being a Horcrux

    Pumpkin pasty was here! Keep posting exactly as you are doing, we love to hear you. I think Snape is one of the most interesting characters, because it just gets you thinking about being a good or bad person. You can be mean, but have a line that you dont cross like actual phisical violence but does that make you good? It goes to what you have been acostumed in your life. Some of us take abuse from parents or partners but still thing them good because they have some redeeming qualities. On the other hand, someone can be good, have a good heart and good intentions but not have a sunny disposition or charming behavior and that makes them be discounted as bad.

    58:47 I think you could reasonably expect more polite manners from a Hogwarts professor talking to a ghost; however, Peeves is a poltergeist (mischievous spirit different from a human that lived & died) who’s more often seen as a nuisance feature of Hogwarts.
    You’re spot on that Hogwarts feels like a character! It was one of the most entrancing parts for me reading these books as a kid.

    I really loved how you noted that Neville was very involved in the story as the other three because he truly is, in my opinion, as important as them in the cause. I also remember one theory I read a long time ago how each one of them represents a certain Hogwarts house; Hermione being Ravenclaw, Harry as Slytherin, and Ron and Neville as Hufflepuff and Gryffindor (forgotten which is which for these two but I would 99.99% say that it's Ron as Hufflepuff and Neville as Gryffindor).

  • @Mreffs101

    Pumpkin Pasty was here 😆I love the longer videos! Peeves is not a ghost but is instead a manifestation of all the rule-breaking, mischief and sneakiness of all Hogwarts students throughout the years. Ghosts are people that were once fully alive but they aren't technically dead either, this is why they can be petrified. Nick even admits he can tell Harry nothing about the secrets of death because he was afraid to die and chose a feeble version of life when Harry seeks him out after Serius died. Peeves was never a living person.
    PS I hope you post the book club videos more often. I waited years between HP books and movies so I can certainly be patient but would love to see this content posted more than once a month if that's manageable.
    PPS When Cedric, Lilly, and James show up at the end of Goblet they are not ghosts. Dumbledore calls them echoes of who they were in life. I presume it is the same when Harry uses the Resurrection Stone at the end of Deathly Hallows.

    About ghosts - it will be explained better in later books, namely in Order of the Phoenix. poltergeist isn't actually a ghost, more like an entity, created from generations of mischievous students (that is explained in wizarding world, where you made the quiz about your house).

    Looking forward to seeing you react to the Fantastic Beasts movies...they are more or less about what it took for Dumbledore and his crew to take down Grindelward. There's a lot of other things going on but the struggle against Grindelwald is the focal point of the larger story. You also get a look at the larger Wizarding World outside of Hogwarts and outside of the UK as well.

      One other quick thing...Pretty sure that the Lily, James, and Cedric ... the ones that came out of Voldemort's wand as a result of the Priori Incantatum that took place when Harry and Voldy's wands connected in the graveyard were not technically ghosts. If memory serves I think Dumbledore in the books refers to them as 'echos' which is why they couldn't hang around for more than a minute or two tops. It was simply the regurgitation of the last spells that Voldemort's wand had performed.

    Pumpkin Pasty was here. I feel like all the wizards and witches are much more whimsical in the books than they are in the movies. The contrast is shown very early in the interaction between Dedalus Diggle and Uncle Vernon. I agree that the books are more childlike in the beginning. I remember JKR saying that she wrote it in a way that her own children, who were growing up the same age, would be able to empathise with the characters or something along those lines.

    In the book, Nevil was nearly a hat stall or a student that takes more than 5 minutes to be sorted. This was because he was a bit the opposite of Harry. He didn't really want Gryffindor, he wanted Hufflepuff. He was intimidated by Gryffindor's reputation and did not think he could handle it. The hat felt differently and unlike Harry, it convinced him out of his first inclination.

    Peeves is a poltergeist. Unlike ghosts he can interact with physical objects like brooms. However, he can also turn invisible and glide through walls and doors. He's the physical manifestation of all the mischief-making at Hogwarts.
    The Bloody Baron thing is a slow-burn. But lets just say that Peeves is afraid of him for a reason.

    Dean Thomas mom is a muggle and his dad was a wizard so like Harry and Hermione he does know the muggle world. (btw1: Yes Bezoar comes later on in the Half Blood Prince. Harry actually pays attention to Snape's class) (btw2: I do not consider myself intelligent but still I'm a Ravenclaw and always felt one of them. Being a Ravenclaw is more about the "hunger" of knowledge more than intelligence itself... well at least for me 🙃)

    Pumpkin Pastie was here... I love these keep the book club stuff, it adds a nice interactive feel, and also will keep a more spontaneous element to the reviews. As a person who also read the books after watching the movies, I don't think you need to separate the actors from the characters. Especially Rickman/Snape, I have no trouble believing that had the script writers wrote Snape as nasty and cruel as he was in the books, that Rickman would have knocked it out of the park.

    56:07 I think what you're really noting on is just the Starch difference of actually hearing Harry's thoughts so many times it's not fully that they left things out but more you being able to read certain events very differently bcs you actually hear Harry's thought process

    • @pink_alligator

      Too many not having that makes movie Harry bland (but like what options did they have? can you imagine if the movies had like a constant narration over it? awful) but they really did the best they could without actually changing how Harry acts from what I remember, like making him a lot more outspoken then he is just so they could include more parts of his internal dialogue
      there are certainly many adaptions who've done stuff like that, maybe they would have if internal Harry wasn't often so sassy lol and they needed to be sure he came across as nothing but likable
