People who think Vincent = William or Mike = Micheal almost certainly didn't exist in the 2014/15 fandom, these characters are basically OCS that everyone just pointed at and said "I like them :)"
the reason people are uncomfortable with the ship is because back in the old fnaf fandom Vincent was a replacement for William, because people didnt know who purple guy was at the time and Mike Schmidt was a replacement for Michael Afton because again, people didnt know the security guard for most of the games exactly and who he was.
Vincent honestly has the same energy as Mike from Deltarune, where the fans take a character we know next to nothing about, and make a ton of fan content for them to the point that they basically become a community oc.

The comics and characters were made by a Fnaf fan named Rebornica. She made the comics after the second game was released and made her own au out of the characters in the games. She made none of the characters related to each other and made Vincent not be William. So in this instance you can ship Vincent and Mike together. Plus I hate the comment that stated that phone guy and Vincent was a better ship since Vincent would force himself onto phone guy when phone guy didn't want him to and sexually harass phone guy. Plus Rebornica was just a piece of shit person in general but that's for another day.
I just got into the franchise with security breach and I'm starting to gain a lot of attraction towards the whole lore. It is very interesting. And while I was looking at let's plays of each game I recognized a lot of names like Fritz or so,, which I knew since I was an amino user and yknow all the fandom stuff. And I never really knew who they were in general like Mike Schmithchydydhs something.
God I remember just being in the fandom (2014-2015) back in the earlier days of it and I already knew that William and Michael were not Mike and Vincent. Now it's worse when you see a certain part of the community who believes that CC's name is these other names and I know it's not actually Canon cuz nobody knows his true name, I just use the fan-made one for him back in the earlier days which was Chris. It's the same thing with Mrs Afton, the people who believes she's Ballora and her name is Clara. I'm pretty sure she's is never really brought up in the games/books. I'm happy you explained this to people.

Pretty sure the Afton name didn't even exist until the books came out, and weren't Game canon till the 5th fricken game.
