Thanks for talking about this bug, I had no idea it exists.. I haven't harvested my garlic or onions just yet, but if they do have a problem, I now know what to look for
I feel ya, I lost all my garlic, leeks and onions this year😢 allium minor too here so I’ve covered my next sowings. I blacked sacked the lot as they were deep into every bulb 😢 Hey ho, learning as I go. Thanks for the video.
So frustrating when this happens! Hopefully you were able to rescue some as you have suggested? I lost all my leeks a couple of years ago to the leaf minor grubs and then again every single onion last year!! Prior to that, never experienced the little critters!!! I have been very lucky with my garlic this year...had a fabulous harvest...so I'm holding my breath for the onions now.🤞 But, they are such a staple and when they are gone, they're gone. Keep smiling, and enjoy the sunshine! Take care, Annie 🐞 🐝 🌱
It definitely is frustrating 😒. But its the growers game. You win some you loose some. Ill still have garlic for the year. And the onions. Ill have to wait and see. But to never of had it. To it hitting 4 different beds is pretty annoying. But I've already started to fill the beds up again 😁
It is heartbreaking when you have put in so much effort but at least you can salvage something. At least our lives aren't dependent on it like they were years ago.
I’ve pulled all my garlic,, yes they were going a bit yellow but I needed the space to put my flowers in ,, good idea to freeze your alliums ,, nothing wasted ,, you could perhaps grow a green manure to rid the leaf minor then net in future years,,I’m also no dig and I wonder if this is why we get it ?,, best wishes, Lisa
Oh hell lm so sorry, lts soooo frustrating. All them months of waiting 😒 that leaf minor is a nightmare no dought about it.Upwards and onwards as they say.
My hard neck is good but I have lost all my onions and I might loose my soft neck, so I feel your frustration. Not too bad overall, but more preparation in kitchen.👍🏻🤠💗🙏
I panicked and pulled my garlic 🧄 it’s ok just didn’t bulb like I thought after our super cold winter. 😂😂 and I don’t know if it’s hard or soft neck 🤦🏼♀️. I feel your pain I lost all my expensive golden beets to beet leaf miner which I had never even bloody heard of before 🤬🤬. Chin up onward and upward as gardeners do, Ali 🌞🥵🇨🇦
Yea ive just read up on the beet miner... 😳. Just another pest to add to the unwanted list. 😭 some of mine didn't split. We had down to -10 for several nights. Plus all the cold weather.
I lifted some of mine today & was pretty heartbroken….so tiny. Ours look far worse than yours though, full of rust. Not sure what I did wrong or how to eradicate it? Ref netting, I recently read someone uses dressmakers tulle as it’s cheaper. New subscriber by the way 😊
Yes it can be cheaper to use that. So long as its very fine. As the fly is small. May be better to use a very fine mash. As for rust I can't give you an answer. There seems to be alot of different ways. But in general it dosnt affect the bulb growth unless its extremely bad.
You can. But there will most likely be grubs or pupae inside. So ill have to go through individually each piece to inspect. But they won't store long term. So I'll chop them up and freeze them for later use. There was quite alot that was too badly eaten and lots of grubs inside which I burnt when I got home.
In general yes. Fine netting should work. But because we've never had the issue. Or grew any allium in any of those beds before. We didn't think of netting it. Shame its hit 4 beds though.

I managed to sa save alot. But some were into deep and well. Just not worth the hassle. Does seem to have hit alot of people this year.

Yup it definitely is. But yes growing is all about having a back up plan. Ill make the most of what I've got. And carry on planting 😁

Sorry to hear that. ☹. Think pretty much all my onions will succumb too.

This is my first year growing veg in my small garden, can I ask why you can't eat them if they are going to be cooked.

Hi, I've lost all of my onions, shallots and garlic, can you grow anything in the infected bed now or do you have to leave it?
Sorry to hear this
So long as its not in the allium family. You are good to go 👍
@@oddsocksgrowing thanks for the input. Won't let the grimy grubs get us down 🙈
such a shame, is there anyway to avoid/prevent this ? just the netting
