Absolutely loving these web exclusives so far. Keep it up. I’ve hunted my entire life, but meat eater has inspired me to branch out not just in terms of quarry but also in a culinary sense. I was undoubtedly the first student to eat beaver stew for lunch at my high school.
Man IV just started watching meateater amd it's awesome. For sure one of the best and my favorite outdoor hunting/fishing show IV watched in long time. They did a very good job with this show. Thanks
Steve is so smart when it comes to the outdoors and the thing I enjoy about meateater the show isn’t about adds it’s about hunting what it should be about
When someone says “ im living the dream” and someone responds to that “yea somebody else’s dream”. This is what I think of. Mr Rinella you sir are living my dreams. good show!
First want to say thank you for your hunting ethics I love the out doors from small gaming to white tailed deer hunting in Michigan keep up the good work and keep showing videos of Joe Rogen and Bryan great stuff
Funny story. I have recently joined the water management arena here in Michigan, but since 2011, I have been a professional fisheries researcher. Once in 2009, when I was an intern for a fisheries management group, our crew drove north to attend a large NR meeting, chuck full of biologists, attorneys, and other Fisheries and Wildlife professionals from around the Great Lakes region. At this meeting, various issues were discussed ranging from biological survey results and fisheries population estimates to legal issues needing attention. When it came time for the biologists to speak, one of them made mention of the fact that they had not seen the level of catch rates of burbot in their surveys that they were normally accustomed to seeing. Of course, he phrased it like a commercial fisherman, "We have really seen a large decrease in our catch rates of lawyers. They're just not showing up in our sets like they used to." Now, this comment was made on a microphone and very audible to everyone attending the meeting. All of the attorneys present, who had just had the floor prior to the biologists, discussing legal issues and the like, ALL got very confused and befuddled looks on their faces when they heard this. After the comment was made, the biologist kept on with his reporting and the meeting kept going on and not one single attorney asked for any kind of clarification. To this day, I'm not sure if they know he was talking about burbot or them. Still one of the funniest things I've ever seen. :)
I have watched this clip many times, but I still have yet to actually go fishing for the poor man’s lobster. I’m disappointed in myself. As always Steve makes a great video that is both entertaining and informative.
Oh I forgot, I live in Northern Alaska and remote folks (off the road system) rely on burbot also called the "breadwinner" they fish everyday for burbot. They make soup, pie, chowder fried fillets, etc from burbot.
I’ve caught these in summer after dark fishing silvers on the big SU at sheep creek and Caswell creek. Gotta fish in the big su proper and make sure it’s in the glacier water not the creek water and they stack up eating salmon eggs. They hit light and nibble before taking them sometimes but you can catch one after another in summer that way all along the big su
Steve, when I saw the thumbnail, for a split second...I mistook you for Steve Buscemi, and thought he was doing a Fargo revival. I can't trust my mind sometimes. While I'm here let me just say that I really enjoy your Meat Eater series. Thank you for all the hard work you and your team have gone through. I've learned a lot. Take care!
We call them Losh here in eastern upper peninsula of michigan. My dad said that joke to my sister when she was in law school, didn't turn out so well... yeesh.
I used to fish them on the Tanana, it looked like that’s where you guys were fishing them. It was some of my favorite fishing because it gets dark in Fairbanks at about 3:30 pm and there aren’t too many other activities in the winter when its dark. The jigs are the way to go though, glow in the dark tipped with whitefish. That last one you guys caught must have went 12 pounds or better.... that was a nice fish!
Tip for those who dont use tip ups regularly... put black(reflective if you night fish)) tape on the flag it makes them way easier to see against the white background
The people in Michigan's upper peninsula trap them in what looks to me as huge minnow traps, they cut a big hole in the ice at the bend of the river , then lower the trap and check it once or twice a day
Hi found your show on netflix watched every episode and season back to back , never realised there was more content on you tube , when,s the next season ? been a gunsmith 31 years and hunted since i was 8 ( im 50) maybe visiting alaska soon and with luck may be moving there !
We have a similar fish here in Nfld called ling cod. They grow to be massive like 60lbs plus. We would catch them through the ice as well when we were kids.
First time I ever saw or heard of one of these things was about 10 years ago when I found one washed up on Okanagan Lake. I had to take pictures, the thing was so damn weird looking.
mariah or devil fish here in southern Manitoba, also poor mans lobster. cooked them on my woodstove in the ice shack one night and coated them in beer batter, tasted like mac and cheese somehow. very tasty fish
I live in north pole and I've never been. just got a bunch of gear so i'm willing to try but I dont wanna sink my new auger into a rocky sand pile on the Tanana
Steve Rinella at 1:30 Steve's Mind: hmmm how to explain the thickness of the ice, should I say it's 3 feet deep? no. Steve: "Through ice that's about as thick as the distance that separates the bottom of your boots from the bottom of your crotch" me: nods head
Wondering how long & how many pounds a burbot is when it's head & body barely comes out a 8 inch auger ice hole? It was really close to the world record burbot at the time. (Over 20 years ago) Never weigh & measure though.
I work up in northern Wisconsin on lake Superior and for the longest time people didn't think eelpout were edible because they're ugly and the fishermen would just leave them on on the docks after bringing in their haul. Well the homeless and poor would take the free fish and discovered they're delicious and from then on they became the gentrified lobster of the lake
In Illinois we call them grunnel but you pronunce it more like gr (like a growl) run (like running) el (like the nick name you would called your friend Elly or ellen
Not gonna show how to prepare the thing? Seems like a pretty easy way to double up the video. Love me some burbot. People don't usually know how to fillet at prepare a big sack of snot though. You should definitely show them.
@Larry Bulthousethat is one of the names we call it where I live. From Wikipedia: The burbot is the only gadiform freshwater fish. It is also known as burbot, mariah, freshwater ling, the lawyer, coney-fish, lingcod, freshwater cusk, and eelpout. The species is closely related to the marine common ling and the cusk. It is the only member of the genus Lota. Wikipedia
Also, I was a commercial fisherman for 7 years, on both water and ice, so I am pretty sure I know a little bit about this fish. I have caught many. If you would like to know a little more about this fish, just ask.
That lawyer joke was laugh out loud
How you get that picture

I am a lawyer and I am going to start calling other lawyers burbots hahahahaha.
You guys make a wonderful show every time
“That’s how it works; It doesn’t matter what state you’re in.” 👍
You have changed my life for the better. Thank you for the videos.
Steve you are the greatest! You inspire me more than you can imagine! Cheers from Paw Paw!
Steve is so smart when it comes to the outdoors and the thing I enjoy about meateater the show isn’t about adds it’s about hunting what it should be about
I hope you guys do some more podcasts this year while ice fishing. I think it was your best to date for entertainment factor on top of the content

Steve, keep up the work, we support you.
@meateater should have come to the eelpout festival in Minnesota. Too bad its canceled for this year.
Burbot is so yummy. got the last batch near the garden peninsula. One of the best fish to eat in Michigan.
I’ve caught these in summer after dark fishing silvers on the big SU at sheep creek and Caswell creek. Gotta fish in the big su proper and make sure it’s in the glacier water not the creek water and they stack up eating salmon eggs. As a Burbot, I find the comparison to a lawyer as offensive
I love your show man! It makes me hungry.
My fav outdoorsman show

“You need to have live bait.”
Proceeds to bait the hook with dead bait.
I think he was referring to organic or non- artificial ...no worries. Whatever you're using ...it's gotta smell good to them.
"Alive" bait pierced by hook left to die in pain is forbiden. Ať least in EU
@@onderp3310 In the US there are different rules for different waters, counties, and states. But generally live bait is legal
@@onderp3310 cause everything is illegal in the EU.
Live bait is generally considered to mean anything that is currently or ever was alive
Rinella's right. It would be awesome to see his guides/friends from South America join him for some lawyer fishing.
Ice fishing! Can't wait!
Dope video, I Love Ice Fishing!!
L
Here in Saskatchewan a lot of people call them Dog fish. The world record was caught here . Somewhere north of 25 pounds.
Dog fish and eel pout are two different Species
I’m well aware what burbot are . People call burbot dog fish here
There’s also some that call Walleye pickeral. It’s a Western Canadian thing even though they’re two completely different species . Confusing I know.
Ya I'm from Saskatchewan and dog fish is all I knew them as for years
@@JShera Then what do they call pickerel*? That's not only confusing, but dangerously incorrect.
Grew up in SD knowing them as eelpout. As a kid not knowing better we threw them back.
And then some time after the flag goose up one of the fisherman yells FLAG ! And runs to it lol I love it
I used to fish them on the Tanana, it looked like that’s where you guys were fishing them. It was some of my favorite fishing because it gets dark in Fairbanks at about 3:30 pm and there aren’t too many other activities in the winter when its dark. Two of my favorites! Meateater + ice fishing!
Tip for those who dont use tip ups regularly... put black(reflective if you night fish)) tape on the flag it makes them way easier to see against the white background
Man thats a great tip. Safety orange is just too darn hard to see against the white snow
@@sunmock Lots of experience :) it's almost always winter here. Most of our tip ups have reflective black flags now.
Love these keep them coming
Moved to Alaska learned about burbot this summer. Iv been striking out pretty hard 😅
We call em eelpout, best eating fish out there!
The people in Michigan's upper peninsula trap them in what looks to me as huge minnow traps, they cut a big hole in the ice at the bend of the river , then lower the trap and check it once or twice a day
burbot look kinda cool, only saw one outta north saskatchewan river, thought it looked like a cool eel crossed somethin. very soft flesh on that one.
Hi found your show on netflix watched every episode and season back to back , never realised there was more content on you tube , when,s the next season ? been a gunsmith 31 years and hunted since i was 8 ( im 50) maybe visiting alaska soon and with luck may be moving there !

I have to try fishing these now. We have them in the Bay of Quinte.
Over here in Saskatchewan they are called Mariah and dog fish.
Shoutout to skatchy 🤙🏼
Watching your show was one of the main reasons I moved to Alaska.
How is it?
How is it?

Ryan Fordt I hear it’s dark most of the time, especially in the winter (in some places at least). What kind of impact does that have on your life?
Whooo ee...dems some good looking catches. Excellent quality meat. Boy- howdy.
Love the hat meat eater, I have one myself. And ling are tasty!

I live in north pole and I've never been. just got a bunch of gear so i'm willing to try but I dont wanna sink my new auger into a rocky sand pile on the Tanana
We call them Eelpouts in MN.
bullfrog made love to a snake....very accurate....nice
Just love when they wrap around your arm
Been ice fishing a few times the thing i best remember is FLAG!!
We call them cusk in Maine
Bobcat Hunting with hounds man, you need it, it needs you. Just do it. Bobcat: the poor man’s lobster.
"live hooligans" was pretty funny
We call them dog fish in Saskatchewan. Not sure why but that’s what I’ve always heard them as lol
In Northern Ontario we call them Ling or poor man’s lobster lol
Go fishing on the st Louis right outside of duluth mn. My buddy and I just caught 6 over 10 pounders.
Good eating, heard them as poor man's halibut and also lush

What ever happened to the podcast with Brant Maxwell when you guys were ice fishing
In northern Ontario Canada native people who live in the bush call them “ ah- dik- ah- mik- uk” in swampy cree 👍
Dam, u guys make one heck of a fishing video
When are we getting more Netflix episodes?
I wish!
Wish granted

HA HA HA! Thank you for a great content!! CHEERS!!!
Man I wish we could still catch them by hand in MN. Those were fun days!
You still can. We ice fish for them coming out of Lake Superior into the Saint Louis river. Big
Lake Superior eel pout!
Used to hand auger through ice that thick. No need to hit the weight room after a day of that kind of fishing.
Nice captures!
Had to refriend your channel . 💪👁️👍 Lake of the woods Minnesota we fished for eel pout.
Did you brine the hooligan in anything before you fished them?

Never had it but that meat looked really good being filleted off of the bone
As good as lobster! They're actually a freshwater cod!
Nice firm, clean white meat that can be prepared any way you can think of. I'd choose it over walleye any day.
You need to hear Burbot's Revenge by Kalmah. How many fish get a heavy metal tribute?
Great work
Good eating fish....could you please tell me where this lake is located....thanks, rick

When that comes out of the hole ! Its time to go home
is it me or do they kind of look like snakehead fish from the south ??
This video makes me want to go ice fishing!
Why arent you guys running tip up lights so you dont have to keep bumbling out with a headlamp every ten minutes to check for flags?
Right? Lol
I love this show
Now my 4 year old wants to cat h burbot. We have them in WA in Kacheelus and Pend Orielle
They dont seem to fight given you all are pulling them up pretty easy by hand without a pole. Is that correct?
water's cold, maybe that slows them down.
catch them on jiggin raps. they taste awesome cooked with butter and a little old bay
